  1. I don't think Mike was on for very long, maybe a year or so. He was playing Scott when Julie & Scott were married early in 1970. Susan Seaforth Hayes mentioned in her book that Mike left because he was frustrated with playing such a dull character. And Scott was dull, no matter who was playing him. That's one of the reasons it was understandable for Julie to start her affair with Doug!

  2. These are some photos taken at Frances Reid's home when she threw a party to welcome Mike Farrell (Scott Banning) to the show. I'm guessing this was around 1970. In the back left to right are Denise Alexander (Susan Martin), Susan Seaforth (Julie Olson Banning), Susan Flannery (Laura Horton, and Frances. In front are Regina Gleason (Kitty Horton) and Heather North (Sandy Horton).

  3. Does anyone else remember the character of Sven Peterson, played by Roberts Blossom? He was one of the creepiest villains ever on soaps. Iris had hired him to be Mac & Rachel's butler, to cause further trouble between them. Sven dismembered Mac's chauffeur! I remember the only time my dad ever got interested in a soap was when Sven was on the scene. This must have been late 70s.

  4. Thanks for the clips of the Hayes', Carl. I wonder if that was filmed in their home? I can't believe Bill turned 86 this week!

The interview was filmed at actress Ruta Lee's house. Ruta interviewed Bill & Susan for a show she has on TBN (I believe). Her interview of them is available online at Lifestyle Magazine's website. Are we allowed to link other websites on here? If so, I will link it. And I agree, Bill is amazing! He and Susan just returned from a 3-week trip to Italy with some of their family members. Also, they have completed a novel which an ebook publishing company has purchased. I highly recommend their autobiography. A lot of insight into their lives of course, but also into the ins and outs of show business, and behind the scenes of Days. Susan is very funny, too!

  5. I believe the Amy Hughes from the late 70s/early 80s was the little girl that Natalie Bannon Hughes had by Jay Stalling, not Penny's adopted daughter. That Amy was probably played by Claire Doyle. Carol Stallings adopted Amy when she was married to Jay (or maybe after Jay was killed). Penny's daughter Amy was Asian.

  6. These clips are amazing! This is shortly after I first started watching the show. Of course, I was in junior high so only could watch it during school breaks. John Colenback was my favorite Dan Stewart. This is my favorite style of soap, with realistic character interaction and conversations. I wonder if most of today's audience would appreciate this type of storytelling because since the 80s people have come to expect action-type stories, with actors looks being more valued than their acting ability?

  7. I remember watching this show but I'm drawing a blank on the plots. I remember my favorite actors on the show were Jobeth Williams, Ted Danson, Audrey Landers, & Barry Jenner. Barry went on to play Evan on Another World, where he plotted with Olive to murder John Randolph!

  8. It all comes down to this: GL's ratings fell after Douglas Marland left, and either CBS or P&G (or both) blamed that on the actors and characters who'd been front-burner during that time rather than the fact that the stories were just too confusing for audiences to follow.

Even after Quint and Nola's stories had begun to get a little...silly, I still loved the duo. Lisa Brown and Michael Tylo's chemistry was just that magical to me. In fact, the only couple who comes close to rivaling them for my affections are AMC's Greg and Jenny. Having said that, though, if GL had chosen to do right by the characters and kill off Quint before they had had the chance to "ruin" either him or Nola...? Well, I won't lie. I would've hated it, probably. But, then again, at least the beauty and purity of their early romance would have remained intact.

Same here. Quint & Nola are second only to Doug & Julie from Days for my affections. I'm sure I would have hated it at the time if either Quint or Nola had been killed off. I would have continued watching as long as they stayed. I returned to GL when they did in the 90s, but their characterizations then were even worse than the mid-80s silliness, especially when Nola started being obsessed with Buzz!

  9. Saynotoursoap I hope you don't mind me asking, but what can you tell us about Penny Davis? I know as a child the character had been bitten by her pet rabbit and was treated for rabies, was involved in a murder mystery later on after she had matured, and gotten involved with Dr. Jerry Dancy. Do you mind filling in the blanks for me? What was her relationship with Althea? What was her occupation? Her romances, such as with Jerry? Thanks, I appreciate the time that you put into clarifying us about TD, you really help to shed some light on the history of TD.

saynotoursoap has a better memory than I do but I am fairly certain that it was Greta Powers who was bitten by the rabbit when she was a child. I thought it was a rabbit that her brother Michael had brought home from the hospital lab.

Penny was Althea's daughter. Penny was wrongly accused of murdering Dr. John Morrison (a psychiatrist.

  10. Those clips are starting to go up on Youtube (the Jonathan story) and they write Nola as so OTT with a crowbar, trying to open boxes, she seems to be channeling Janet Green. The scenes are so strange. I think they just saw Nola as "wacky" when generally I'd say Lisa Brown does better with dryer comedy. Having Quint and Nola stand in front of a huge fake computer isn't the way to go.

I do like the brief scene where he's showing her how to use a computer. Ahead of its time I guess.

I agree, previously Nola had been quirky and did have a few off-the-wall moments (especially with her friend Gracie)but she had not been slapstick like this. It definitely didn't fit Quint's persona. Still, I think I would have continued to watch them if they had stayed. I gradually started losing interest in the show after they left.

  11. January 1975 Daytime TV

Penny is found innocent when the real psychotic murder tries to kill Maggie and confesses to Morrison's murder. Nick and Althea tell Penny they will not remarry and Penny is greatly upset. Ann is in Africa and has contracted a strange disease. Steve and Carolee learn his former wife, Karen, is still alive.

    March 1975 Daytime TV

Michael returned, but at the last minute, refused to tell who he is. Greta believes his spirit is in someone else's body, not realizing the man she saw is actually Michael. Margo returned from Hawaii, refusing to give Alan a divorce, but is taken sick and dies. Ann has recovered from her jungle illness but reporter Kitty Harris has been investigating it.

    May 1975 Daytime TV

Toni and Alan were married in a small ceremony on Valentine's Day, although Toni is not aware her husband is still alive and living out of the country. Karen has regained her memory and has been pressing to regain custody of her son by Steve, Erich. Martha Allen is flattered by Ernie Cadman's attentions.

    July 1975

Andy Anderson has been persuaded to record a record, but vows he will never leave med school since his parents worked too hard to help him. Karen is trying to win Erich over, to regain possession of him. Carolee was able to talk to Steve's step-niece. Mike has fallen in love with Dawn. Toni is overjoyed at the thought of becoming pregnant. Mike has decided to get in touch with his folks.

    November 1975

Penny successfully came between Andy and Stacy and Stacy turned to Ricco. Ricco and Stacy have begun an affair. Penny and MJ have taken a room together, and MJ is trying to help Penny. Alan thinks Toni is still in love with Mike and is very hurt. Steve and Karen had a meeting about Eric, and Carolee is feeling more and more left out and is angry. Ann told Althea Nick still loves Althea.

    January 1976

Although Toni lost the baby, she still refuses to give in to either of her "husbands." She is determined to be free an independent, at least until she knows what she wants for herself. Mona returned to town, and Ann moved in with her. Ann told Mona she and Carolee are now friends, and Mona has been working on a plan to help Steve and Carolee regain custody of Erich. Although Hank Iverson's paramedic unit is doing well.

    March 1976

Erich has been undergoing psychiatric care, and both his sets of parents have been cautioned about what they say to him. Carolee and Steve have been having marital problems caused by the recent strains put on them. Greta is growing up and noticing boys, especially Billie Allison. this is causing pleasant concern for her parents. Althea has been dating Robert Wilson, whose wife is missing.

Thanks for posting! I remember some of these stories, and some not. I believe the "strange disease" Ann came down with rendered her unable to have sex! I don't remember Althea being involved with Robert Wilson. Definitely remember John Morrison and Penny going on trial for his murder. He was deliciously evil!

  12. That's because, for the most part, those who came after him didn't have the same feel for Gothic romance that he did. (As usual, though, I think Nancy Curlee would have done right by them, had she been given the opportunity. Next to Marland, she seemed to be the one who "got" GUIDING LIGHT the best.) Once Marland left, Quint and Nola's relationship became more about wild adventure - which was cute, don't get me wrong, but it never had the same enchanting air of mystery that their earlier story did. Also, Quint, an eccentric (and possibly antisocial) archaeologist and explorer, was thrust suddenly into the corporate sphere thanks to a paternity reveal that was entirely unnecessary (Henry Chamberlain could have been like a father to him instead of his actual one - and don't get me started on Quint suddenly became "Sean Ryan"); and Nola just became an all-around kook and businesswoman. (Remember "Nolaerobics"?) These new functions just didn't suit them all that well, IMO.

Quint & Nola are my second favorite soap couple ever and I agree that it took away something when Quint's air of mystery was removed. Didn't like it when they moved out of the quirky mansion on Thornway Road and into a house with Henry, Vanessa, & Billy. Nolaerobics was terrible, as was Quint becoming a professor and Quint & Nola taking in that obnoxious boy (I think his name was Jonathan).

  13. jam I don't know if you saw the earlier ATWT Daytime Library scans I put up but I was going to ask if there are any specific actors you'd like me to post that I haven't yet. If so let me know.

Yes, I've been enjoying your scans! You have posted some of my favorites already, Judith McConnell, Rita McLaughlin, Eileen Fulton, etc. I appreciate anything you put up. I always seemed to favor the Stewart family. Some of my other favorites are James Douglas & Barbara Rodell (Grant & Lisa Coleman), Lisa Brown (Iva Snyder), Renee Props (Ellie Snyder), Kate McNeil (Karen Haines), and Judith Blazer (Ariel Aldrin).
