  1. Wayne Brady, Let's Make a Deal, LMAD, #LMAD

During the week of May 15-19, 2023, only the first half-hour of “The Price is Right” (3.703 million) and the second half-hour of “Let’s Make a Deal”(2.539 million) saw an increase among Total Viewers compared to one week earlier. The second half-hour of “The Price is Right” (4.179 million) was down by just -1,000 viewers week-to-week, the smallest drop of any daytime broadcast series.

“The Young and the Restless (3.220 million), “The Bold and the Beautiful” (2.784  million) and “The View” (2.094 million) each saw a significant week-to-week drop among Total Viewers. The two CBS can point to the network’s continued coverage of UEFA Champions League games on Wednesday, May 17 as a factor in their falls as each soap was preempted, amended, or broken out in key markets on that day.

Ironically, UEFA Champions League ratings continue to fall behind typical CBS daytime programming averages. The Wednesday, May 17 game was watched by just 1.193 million viewers according to figures released via ShowBuzzDaily. Among Households, the game did a 0.7 rating.

Despite falling in Households (1.4 rating vs. 1.5 rating) week-to-week, “General Hospital” (2.096 million) managed to rank as ABC’s top show among Total Viewers for the week, topping “The View” by +2,000 viewers (2.096 million vs. 2.094 million). Meanwhile, “GMA3: What You Need to Know” (1.390 million) is on par with its performance two years earlier, but was down significantly compared to its year ago performance.

What follows is a breakdown of how the daytime broadcast shows performed during the week of May 15-19, 2023 in Households and Total Viewers, including a look at their comparable performance last year (2022) and two years ago (2021), respectively. A closer look at the daytime soaps, including a daily performance breakdown in the demos, will be posted on Thursday.

Note*: Officially, rankings are sorted by the rounded figures released by Nielsen. We are separately providing the unrounded demos for informational purposes only. “NBC News Daily” year ago and two years ago figures are compared to the performance of “Days of our Lives.” Ratings for Women 18-49 and Women 25-54 were unavailable at press time.

  5. Stephen A. Smith, Brick, General Hospital, GH, GH ABC, #GH, #GH60, #GeneralHospital, ESPN

ESPN commentator and sports journalist Stephen A. Smith appeared on the Tuesday, May 23 episode of “Tamron Hall” for a sitdown chat with host Tamron Hall on the set of “General Hospital” where they discussed his recurring role as tech expert Brick on the daytime drama series, his family, career and future plans. The pair also had fun chatting about their upcoming appearance in a future episode of “Celebrity Family Feud” where they go head-to-head as opponents.

When asked about his role on “General Hospital,” Smith told Hall, “I’ve been blessed and fortunate because I do scenes primarily with the star of the show. And we’ve developed an incredible friendship, Maurice Benard [Sonny Corinthos] and myself.” He added, “I can’t tell you the amount of times that he’s pulled me to the side and he sat down with me and he’s embraced it and he’s like, ‘Here’s where I want you to go.’ I remember there was a scene where he had lost a relative and literally he said to me, ‘I don’t want to offend you here,’ and he brought up losing my mother in 2017, and he said, ‘I need you to go back to that moment. I need you to embrace how you were feeling at that moment in time.’ He said, ‘I’m only coming to you because I know you can. I need you to do it.’ And that was exactly what I did.”

With Smith making a name for himself on ESPN, he shares that one of the biggest secrets to his success is his ability to work, telling Hall, “No one’s gonna outwork me. I remember I was just with my boss the other day and you know, I was reminded of a time where there was a former executive VP at ESPN, who’s now the athletic director at Syracuse, his name is John Wildhack, and he introduced me to the football team because he wanted me to speak to the football team. And he reminded them that he had been in our business for nearly 40 years and I was the only employee he ever had to make take vacation.” Surprised by that comment, Hall asked, “Are you still that guy now?” to which Smith said, “I wouldn’t go that far. You don’t have to make me take vacation. I’m gonna take vacation.”

When asked what changed, Smith replied, “Longevity. Thinking about smelling the roses, I’m not one to sit around and smell it, but I want to do things and associate myself with things that allows me to know that I’m reaping the fruits of my labor…Regardless of the vacations that I take or the time that I take off, I’m still going to outwork 99% of the people out there. I don’t stop. I’m a machine and I know it and I’m proud of it. And I don’t believe that talent is what got me here. It’s a commitment to working hard and exhausting myself trying to be and striving to be the best that I can be. And more importantly than that, it really comes down to, you know, being brilliant because you know you’re not.”

As for what’s next for him in his career, Smith notes, “First order of business is perfecting the things that I’ve already started. My production company I want to grow. Everybody talks about stuff like, you know, Spike Lee and people like that, yeah Spike Lee, Tyler Perry, Jerry Bruckheimer. My aspiration is to get to that point. I’m going to pursue acting, I finally made the decision to do that. That’s something that I want to do because I like portraying other characters and finding myself marrying that character, the challenge of it because I think it makes me better on television. And I’m not satisfied with what I’ve accomplished on television. In the world of sports? Yes. But I plan on taking it a step further.”

Explaining how far he’s willing to go, Smith says, “I want to end my career being recognized as arguably the greatest television talent in history. That’s what I want to do. That’s what I want to accomplish. You can’t do it sitting idly by or sitting around thinking that’s just laudables that are going to be thrown in a direction. You got to put in the work, and I intend to do just that.”

Will some of these shows end up on FAST platforms like Tubi, Pluto TV, Roku etc.?

That's likely to happen, but I imagine some of the shows on the list had virtually no viewers. For instance, "Marvel’s Voices Rising: The Music of Wakanda Forever (Disney+)" which would only be interesting to music people or those who wanted to learn more about the music from the movie. It's like airing a one-off special in this instance. Why keep it on the platform hogging space when it's only relevance was when the movie hit the streamer.

  10. Guy Pearce, Neighbours, #Neighbours

After reprising his role as Mike Young during the final episodes of “Neighbours” last year, actor Guy Pearce will return to Ramsay St. later this year when the show returns to television on Amazon Freevee in the United States and the United Kingdom and Network 10 in Australia. Pearce made a name for himself on the drama series when he originated the role in 1986.

In a message posted across the show’s social media channels, producers noted, “It’s official folks… Guy Pearce is riding back into Erinsborough as Mike Young in all new episodes of #neighbours later this year…”

The news of Pearce’s return was first announced by the actor himself during a recent episode of the “Good Weekend Talks” podcast hosted by Conrad Marshall.

When asked about his return to “Neighbours” to help the show wrap up its storylines, and how things will turn out with his character now that the show is coming back, Pearce shared, “I was a little thrown by that because Annie [Jones] and I called each other and went, What do we do now? Because we’re in the we’re living in the street. And she said, Well, why? Because I’m on the show anyway. What are you going to do? I said, I don’t know. So we’re in the process of working it out.”

In a follow-up, Pearce was asked if fans could expect to see him return to Ramsay St., which he responded to, saying, “You may, you know, because obviously, if I’m going to extricate myself from the show, I have to do it in a you know, I want to do it sort of respectfully. And I wasn’t just going to go, oh, well, bad luck, You know, you had your chance. That was it. You know, So there may be a little appearance or two, shall we say.”

Watch a clip of Pearce’s most recent return to “Neighbours” below.

Since concluding his original run on “Neighbours” in 1989, Pearce has gone on to star in such memorable films as “Momento,” “L.A. Confidential” and “The King’s Speech.” He has received numerous accolades for his performances, including a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or Movie for his portrayal of Monty Beragon in “Mildred Pierce” and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture for “The King’s Speech.”

In 2022, Neighbours was canceled after a 37-year run due to the loss of a broadcast partner in the U.K. Months after the show aired what was expected to be its final episodes, Amazon announced it had signed a deal with the show’s production company, Fremantle, to bring the show back via its popular Freevee streaming platform and Prime Video in key markets.

Upon its return, “Neighbours” will be available to stream on Amazon Freevee in the United Kingdom and the United States and Prime Video in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Ireland and South Africa – Network 10 will retain first-run broadcast rights in Australia with ad-free episodes releasing seven days later on Prime Video in Australia. Previous seasons of “Neighbours” and many iconic episodes are available to stream on Amazon Freevee.

I read a rumor somewhere, can't remember where, Lindsay Hartley (ex-Sam, GH), who played Ariana, Gabi's older sister, could return to DAYS as a re-cast Gabi.  I don't hate the idea.

Last I heard, the show had no plans to recast the role. Things could have changed, but I don't think it's worth recasting unless her final scenes left a window where the character would be needed.

During its earnings call last week, Disney announced plans to remove many streaming shows from Disney+ and Hulu to help mitigate further losses as the company heads into its third quarter.

“We will be removing certain content from our streaming platforms and currently expect to take an impairment charge of approximately $1.5 to $1.8 billion,” said Christine McCarthy, Disney’s chief financial officer during the call with investors. 18. Haley Pullos, Molly Lansing-Davis, General Hospital, GH, GH60, #GH, #GH60, #GeneralHospital

The same day TMZ broke the story that Haley Pullos (Molly Lansing-Davis, “General Hospital”) had been arrested for her involvement in the April 29 crash that saw her vehicle enter the wrong way onto the eastbound SR-134 freeway before colliding with another vehicle comes word that the actress has been checked into a Malibu rehab facility.

According to The Daily Mail, on Wednesday, May 17, Pullos was driven by her father to a Malibu detox and residential treatment facility, which cost roughly $2,600 a week. The outlet notes the location “boasts several alcohol and drug addiction treatments, ranging from a ten-day long detox to a more intensive medication-assisted treatment with a residential option for round-the-clock care.

“An intensive outpatient program is then offered as a transition, as well as an aftercare program for those who use the facilities.”

Just before 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 29, Pullos reportedly drove her vehicle the wrong way on the 134 freeway before colliding head-on with a 23-year-old male driver of a Kia who suffered major injuries and rushed to an area hospital. Pullos herself required help from the Pasadena Fire Department who used the jaws of life to extract her from the wrecked 2019 Ford she was driving.

Before the accident, Pullos was also reportedly involved in a hit-and-run with another vehicle, an Oldsmobile driven by a 27-year-old woman from Fontana in the westbound lane, which did not result in any serious injuries. According to a police report, “It was determined Haley Pullos was involved in a hit and run traffic collision that occurred in the city of Pasadena prior to entering the wrong way onto the eastbound SR-134 freeway.”

It’s unclear how long Pullos is expected to remain in the facility but The Daily Mail notes that if she “chooses a longer outpatient treatment of 15 weeks, it could cost up to $28,875.” The other option they point out is a detox of up to ten days which will cost about $3,750, while the available inpatient programs are priced at $5,400 for 90 days.“General Hospital” has temporarily recast the role of Molly Lansing-Davis with newcomer Holiday Mia Kriegel (“Bull,” “Animal Kingdom”). She begins airing next week, the week of May 22, 2023.

  20. S.W.A.T., Shemar Moore, #SWAT, Netflix, #Netflix

What a tumultuous ride fans of the CBS drama “S.W.A.T.” have been on these last few weeks. First, the show was awaiting renewal news. Then came the cancellation notice, followed by a last-minute renewal days later, consisting of a shortened seventh and final season with just 13 episodes ordered. Now the show has joined Netflix, where it can grow an even wider audience.

As of yesterday, May 17, fans of the Shemar Moore-led series were able to begin streaming all 106 episodes from the first five seasons on the world’s biggest streaming service, with Season 6 episodes set to join the platform later this fall, according to a tweet by series creator Shawn Ryan, who also executive produces the series.

In addition to Netflix, “S.W.A.T.” is also available to stream on Hulu and Paramount+, the latter of which has rights to the current season only while the former streams the first three seasons. The Netflix deal, which closed just over a month ago and predates CBS/Sony negotiations over Season 7, allows fans to watch the first five seasons on one platform for the first time.

On the show, Moore stars as Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson, a former Marine and locally born and raised S.W.A.T. sergeant tasked to run a specialized tactical unit that is the last stop in law enforcement in Los Angeles. Torn between loyalty to where he was raised and allegiance to his brothers in blue, Hondo strives to bridge the divide between his two worlds.

The series also stars Alex Russell as Jim Street, Jay Harrington as David “Deacon” Kay, Kenny Johnson as Dominique Luca, David Lim as Victor Tan, Patrick St. Esprit as Commander Robert Hicks and Rochelle Aytes as Nichelle, Hondo’s girlfriend, operator of a South LA community center.

The sixth season finale of “S.W.A.T.” is set to air on Friday, May 19 on CBS. The episode, entitled “Legacy,” which is part two of a two-part season finale, finds the team working with the DEA and their iron-jawed leader, Mack Boyle (guest star Timothy Hutton), to stop a ruthless cartel boss waging war on the streets of Los Angeles as he exacts revenge on those who killed his son.

In announcing its fall schedule for the 2023-2024 broadcast television season, CBS revealed the show would remain in its current Friday at 8:00 p.m. time period, with the expectation that the Writers Strike will be over by that time.

  21. SAG-AFTRA, Union for Actors, #SAGAFTRA

Just as the Writers Guild of America (WGA) did before it formally went on strike on Tuesday, May 2, the SAG-AFTRA National Board agreed unanimously to recommend that its members vote to authorize a strike should the union’s forthcoming TV/Theatrical Contract negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) fail. Negotiations are set to begin on Wednesday, June 7. The current TV/Theatrical Agreement expires at midnight on June 30, 2023.

While cautioning that an affirmative vote does not mean a strike would necessarily happen, the union notes an overwhelming vote in favor of a strike bits members would allow the National Board to call one if deemed necessary during the negotiations process.

The action comes following a unanimous agreement by the TV/Theatrical negotiating committee that the strike authorization would give the union maximum bargaining leverage as it enters this round of negotiations with the AMPTP. SAG-AFTRA represents more than 160,000 entertainment and media professionals.

“For the first time in a very long time, our member leadership stands in solidarity at the negotiating committee and the National Board levels on moving forward with a strike authorization. We must get all our ducks in a row should the need present itself, said SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher. “The prospect of a strike is not a first option, but a last resort. As my dad always says, ‘Better to have and not need than to need and not have!’ Therefore, I implore eligible members to follow the leads of both the negotiating committee and the National Board with an unprecedented show of solidarity and make three a charm with an emphatic ‘yes’ for a strike authorization vote!”

SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director and Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland explained, “Strike authorization sends an important message during the negotiations process. A ‘yes’ vote gives the National Board the power to call a strike if the AMPTP does not negotiate fairly in our upcoming bargaining. This will be a seminal negotiation that will determine the future of what it means to be a working performer. We must be ready to fight to secure a meaningful deal for our members.”

In its reporting, SAG-AFTRA notes that earning a living as a professional performer has become increasingly difficult, with both inflation and the streaming ecosystem undercutting compensation — all the while, corporate profits and executive pay at studios continue to rise. Add to this the unregulated use of artificial intelligence and the burdens of the industrywide shift to self-tape, the outlook for working actors becomes unsustainable without transformative change.

As a reminder, a successful strike authorization vote doesn’t initiate a strike. Instead, the strike authorization permits the National Board to declare a strike if the studios and streaming companies fail to negotiate fairly with SAG-AFTRA for the benefit of its members.

Eligible members will be sent postcards starting Thursday, May 18 with instructions on how to vote, and voting will close at 5 p.m. PT on Monday, June 5.

The current SAG-AFTRA TV/Theatrical Agreement expires at midnight on June 30, 2023.

More information is available at sagaftra.org/contracts2023, including the Strike Authorization Vote FAQs.

SAG-AFTRA is the actors union representing actors appearing in TV/Theatrical productions, including “The Bold and the Beautiful,” “Days of our Lives,” “General Hospital” and “The Young and the Restless.” A strike, should one eventually be called, will force a production shutdown of all TV/Theatrical productions requiring on-camera work by union members.

The daytime broadcast shows had an atypical week during the week of May 8-12, 2023, where very few shows showed improvement compared to last week and last year, while others saw a downtick due to sports-related preemptions.

“The View” (2.233 million) was the standout performer overall, gaining +51,000 viewers over its week ago performance and was up three-hundredths in Women 18-49 and two-hundredths in Women 25-54.

Compared to its performance one year earlier, “The View” saw the smallest decline among all of the daytime broadcast shows in Total Viewers, dropping just -47,000 viewers year over year. The show was up year-over-year in both of the key sales demographics. All other shows were flat or down in the key demos and among Total Viewers.

Despite airing just two all-new episodes, “The Talk” (1.421 million) saw a week-to-week decline of just -6,000 viewers, the smallest week-to-week decline among all of the daytime broadcast shows. The series was up three-hundredths in Women 18-49 rating and four-hundredths in Women 25-54 rating.

What follows is a breakdown of how the daytime broadcast shows performed during the week of May 8-12, 2023 in Women 18-49 Rating, Women 25-54 rating, Households and Total Viewers, including a look at their comparable performance last year (2022) and two years ago (2021), respectively. A closer look at the daytime soaps, including a daily performance breakdown in the demos, will be posted on Thursday.

Note*: Officially, rankings are sorted by the rounded figures released by Nielsen. We are separately providing the unrounded demos for informational purposes only. “NBC News Daily” year ago and two years ago figures are compared to the performance of “Days of our Lives.”

  23. Kin Shriner, Scott Baldwin, General Hospital, GH, GH ABC

In a message posted to his Twitter account late last night, “General Hospital” star Kin Shriner said his character on the daytime drama series, Scott Baldwin, has been written out.

“I just found out Scotty @GeneralHospital was written out I thank u @GeneralHospital fans for decades of supporting me !!” reads Shriner’s full tweet.

At press time, Shriner’s tweet has garnered over 270,000 views, nearly 4,000 likes, and over 2,200 comments, many of which are from fans riled up in their disappointment over the show allegedly writing the character out.

Shriner made a similar claim last year when he tweeted, “Scott’s run is done, so heading to Florida to ride Vespa around the tropics.”

It’s understood that although Shriner has played the role of Scott Baldwin on “General Hospital” since 1977, the actor is on recurring status with the series and is only used when there is a need for the character.

ABC has not commented on Shriner’s tweet.
