Didn't ABC do something called "Daytime to Remember" after they cancelled maybe "Loving/The City?' I think they rotated classic episodes of the Big Three shows. Maybe I'm dreaming, but  I couldn't sworn someone mentioned it after AMC/OLTL axed and that it did well in ratings. OC, that would've been different era and pre-YouTube.

Yup. Hosted by Reba McEntire, the show was quite popular and was the go-between the cancellation of "The City" and the launch of "Port Charles." As noted by KMan101, they were 30-minute editions of classic episodes of the ABC soaps, "All My Children," "General Hospital" and "One Life to Live." Reba introduced key moments during each break as a way to help explain away the heavily edited out material since it was just a half-hour version of the shows.

I really enjoyed them and was saddened when it was over. "Port Charles" was alright, but it was never, to me, as good as "Loving" or the other ABC soaps at the time.

Yes it was A Daytime to Remember in 1997 before Port Charles debuted. They did half hour edits I believe.

That fan link explains it but only lists what GH was airing. I'm sure there's probably a better resource.

I'd be all for soaps airing M-W and airing classic episodes on Thurs/Fri.

Only Y&R is currently confirmed to be airing a non-original on Friday (awaiting official word from CBS on what it is they'll air), but I would imagine they must be thinking of following the British shows to some extent. While Mon-Wed makes the most sense, scheduling wise, CBS might opt to do what the British broadcasters have done and just air as little as two episodes per week. By RC Cates' comments, the show only has 15 episodes left, including this week. That only takes us to 5 weeks of shows if Mon-Wed, but we know the show will air Mon-Thur this week, which leaves us with even less.

How long ago was it when ABC Daytime wanted to roll out several classic episodes a year to cut production costs? Anyone can refresh my memory on why that didn't last long? Besides the morbid reality that they cancelling OLTL and AMC probably cut all the costs they needed to cut...

I'm excited to see more older Y&R episodes the way they were originally presented so many years ago. That Victor/Nicki wedding a few NYEs ago was great, and I would love to just have that look and feel of classic Y&R on my TV again.

The "classic" episodes didn't really muster in the ratings and they weren't even classics to begin with. Only "classic" episodes aired featuring Vanessa Marcil's Brenda Barrett have generated any interest by ABC's viewers. She was a HUGE draw for that network. Another reason is music rights and material not jiving with what was currently airing at the time. Hence, ABC aired "current" story related reruns on holidays before outright deciding to cancel all their scripted soaps, saving GH at the last minute.

Back to Y&R...can't comment on what ya'll are talking about just yet. Probably tomorrow I can though.

  3. People simply blaming preemptions are forgetting these details from last year:

There were no preemptions during those weeks. In fact, with "Y&R" preempted several times last week it's more likely that "B&B" would have plunged in viewers along with "Y&R." That didn't happen. Also, "DAYS" is airing in such horrid timeslots in big markets like New York and elsewhere (12 noon, which is where "Sunset Beach" failed to for years), and yet that show increased its audience even while it too was preempted by the same news conferences.

Let's. just sit back and chill. We'll see if the trend continues. If it doesn't, asterisk or not, "B&B" still BEAT "Y&R" in total viewers for the first time ever. Nielsen legit counted that and there's nothing any of us can do about it.

GL did Wed eps that focused on a particular character or storyline. I assume this was done for economic reason - I guess they used fewer actors and sets.

If soaps went M-W-F with new eps and Tues/Thurs with reruns?

Would it be feasible to have special episodes that focused on a particular character/story eg Lily/Devon talk about their lives and there are flashbacks. So basically the two actors would be on a set and tape 10 mins or so of wraparound with flashbacks filling in the rest.

Would that be more appealing to viewers?

That would give them a few more weeks of shows to air.

Personally, I've long been a fan of airing soaps on a reduced schedule to better keep up with the ever changing entertainment landscape and allowing for daytime to have the ability to air more diverse programming like what is done in primetime. My long held idea is to have the current crop of soaps air Monday through Wednesday, and have a rotation of new shows air on Thursdays and/or Fridays. This can include once a week type fare or a multitude of shows, including dramas, not currently on air. This way we can have the ability to binge watch the soaps at a reduced rate so that they don't lose our attention to something less attention grabbing (meaning the soaps requiring too much of our time).
