  1. Listening to the radio soaps, like those episodes posted by quartmainefan, make me want to just get all cozy in bed with some hot chocolate, close my eyes and just envision it all.

That second of episode of THE BRIGHTER DAY was awesome. The actress paying Lydia was just so, so compelling. And the actress playing her neighbour/friend ... the way she said "He was right there just buZZing around the wedding gift table ..." just made me smile from ear to ear.

that woman is such a nosey neighbor!

  2. The final season definitely used clips from episodes if that's what you're thinking of.

They wanted to keep the black bitch and the white bitch together, Diahann being right before Joan after the guest stars was the equivalent of Stephanie Beacham's "with" credit in season 9. They did however sell Stephanie short on The Colbys by giving her the "and" but putting Ricardo Montalban after her with "special guest star". I guess that's "fair" given his career/history with Aaron Spelling, but if Rock Hudson could go before Joan, Ricardo could go before Stephanie.

Ricardo Montalban was a much bigger name than everyone on The Colbys save Stanwyck and Heston. I think by the time Rock Hudson joined the show was already a hit and Joan was now a star, but when she first arrived on Dynasty as a has been who still had a small level of fame she did not get the final credit. James Farentino I guess was deemed the bigger star at the time. No offense to Stephanie Beacham's career, but had anyone ever heard of her before Dynasty?

  3. And, actually, the first season story was atrocious.

all I remember was the son and the husband were the only two interesting characters, and they were the ones I looked forward to. The next year there was this story about a mother and son moving in, but I think I literally lasted two episodes before I decided without a murder mystery the show had almost no merit.

  4. I could see Dynasty being rebooted on a major network, thought probably not ABC. However, they could always reboot it and pair it up with Desperate Housewives on Sunday's. A good, soap filled night. And some crossovers between the two, such as Joan popping in here and there, and Eva Longoria's character having some connection to the new set at Dynasty, could really bring DH back to what made it so great in the beginning...A true SOAP.

I never thought DH was all that great. It's a silly comedy serial, and Dynasty for all its OTT ways at least the characters had no idea they were in something you might laugh at. Blake and company were deadly serious in every statement no matter how outlandish. DH was never really a true soap, with that sing songy woman narrating while comedy music played as Teri Hatcher had a klutzy moment in front of the neighbor.

The first year of DH for all the touting of the women as being what made the show great, it was two men (the dead woman's husband and son) that carried the story. And did they ever have another story as good as that one? I gave up the second episode of season 2.

  5. I agree with you that Dynasty seems more timely, and timeless. Dynasty and Dallas were both about oil but oil was blood on Dallas and I don't know if people really want to see that right now after BP, and Texas cowboys are still not overly popular after the last decade. Dynasty, oil was more generic, an excuse, not something Blake really cared about.

I love both, but rewatching them, I have to say for the most part Dallas holds up better. The first handful of seasons of Dallas is solid drama, while with Dynasty only season 2 and perhaps 3 I think qualifies as great. But Dallas you have a well written TV show for quite a few years. By the 4th season of Dynasty they were already flailing about with Peter DeVilbis, while on Dallas's 4th season we were learning I think who shot JR.

  6. "So take this junk and your blond tramp and get out of my home!"

As far as I'm concerned, that's the line of the series.

    I have to go with

"Mark Jennings...Krystle...and aaallll the Colby wealth and power. I finally got everything that I've wanted, everything I've been planning for...And it's all ours darling, the whole world is going to be ours!"

First, it kicked off the greatest Dynasty scene ever. Next, she is talking about all the Colby wealth she planned for right in front of Colby himself, and finally, she sounds like a comic book supervillain. Greatest scene ever, it should be studied in universities.

  7. The funny thing is, compared to Victoria, I always thought the show centered around Julia. I think Victoria was gone around the time I started watching the reruns on Sci-Fi, and I found myself enamored with Grayson Hall's acting. I think, still to this day, I have not seen episodes of DS that have this Victoria character.

she was so interesting. I used to watch DS reruns on Ch 55 in NY (UHF) and then all of a sudden she was on OLTL too! Not pretty, but she had an interesting face. I had no idea until wikipedia that Grayson Hall was once nominated for an Oscar. Not too many soap stars can make that claim.

  9. For some reason I often forget The Jeffersons was a Norman Lear show -- that seemed to lose any of his touches very early on, which was probably for the best (I have heard nothing but scorn for some of their early attempts to be socially conscious, like Helen and Tom's white son).

Oh I liked him! He has the insult competition with George.

  10. I see it this way:

Norman Lear shows. Too many issues, too strident, saved by some of the performances

Garry Marshall shows. Too loud, too repetitive, saved by some of the performances

    MTM shows. Perfect

AITF was great until Mike and Gloria left. The Jeffersons had a very talented cast and it was a funny show, but often became a little silly. (That doorman who always had his hand out was a waste, but Tom and Helen were perfection while the second Lionel just was dull). Maude I don't recall ever being all that funny, even though I watched it sometimes. Not being a fan of Maude to any great extent I didn't bother following Florida to Good Times. Gloria was a total dud of a show, as was AB's Place.

  11. Brideshead is the best and it just gets better and better as the episodes go on. AW fans may want to check out Charles Keating in it. It's a dramatic but not a melodramatic soap. But it has everything you need, including an impossibly rich family where everyone is miserable.

  12. I see what you mean, it's a bit "let me show you how much I was affected." I do like seeing KL get some praise though, especially in their earlier, underrated years. I couldn't help laughing a bit when they talked about the superiority of British TV -- at this time I think aside from some random PBS stuff the only thing you were likely to see in the US was a Benny Hill rerun.

The best serialized drama you will find

  13. I always thought that deep down there was some respect between Abby and Valene -- Abby did tell Val that her babies were alive (thank goodness Donna Mills fought for that).

I never believed Gary and Val were right for each other and I never enjoyed their relationship. It's not entirely the fault of the couple, because the show just gave up after they got back together in season 12, but I don't think they ever belonged together. They were teenage sweethearts who never knew how to grow up. Whenever they were back together they would regress. Ben/Val and Gary/Abby were far superior couples. Gary/Abby were so sexy and you had the drama of Gary knowing how "evil" Abby was but still loving her and knowing she represented his darker side. You had a lot of comedy with Ben and Val. I loved it. I still remember when he put on a kilt and played the bagpipe in bed. I don't remember Gary and Val ever laughing. I don't believe Gary, Abby, and Val were ever the same after those relationships ended. You had Abby pining for boring Michael York, Gary and Sally's Friend or whoever that was, Valene and the psychos of the season. The only Gary stuff I enjoyed then was with Jill and that wasn't because of their relationship but because I loved watching her go nuts.

I liked Gary and Val. Part of what makes them right for each other is the fact that they were not right for each other. She was 14, he was a drunk, but they wanted it to work out even though everything was against them.

The only thing I like about Abby in this equation is she represents his fall from grace. Well ok, he was perpetually off grace from falling so often he could not get back on, but he did love Val and Abby basically stole him. I like that they both tried to move on but in the end true love conquers all. After 15 years of them suffering, they deserved the happy end.

  14. http://www.tmz.com/2010/06/28/amy-locane-melrose-place-drunk-driving-death/

Amy Locane -- who played Sandy in the original "Melrose Place" -- was just charged with killing someone in a drunk driving accident last night.

According to the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office, Locane plowed into the passenger side of another car in Montgomery, New Jersey ... killing the woman sitting in the front seat.

The driver of the car was flown to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. Locane was arrested at the scene for DUI and taken to a different hospital for treatment.

  15. But this is truly worth a listen to. KD Lang just is better than everyone else.

  16. There's only one more season of Dallas left and I heard following that release we'll get the two reunion movies.

I have seasons 1 and 2 of Knots Landing and I find both seasaons rather boring. Knots starts getting good at the end of Season 2 and the cliffhanger where Sid goes over a cliff after his car is tampered. The better seasons are after Season 2. I hope we get more seasons. I thought season 2 sold well.

Sid's death shocked me. That was the most memorable moment for me out of the entire show, I have to say. He was one of the main stars and then it happened, and I never really saw that on a TV show before. I am the rare KL watcher than prefers the cul-de-sac early years. It wasn't a full soap, but it was like watching Eight Is Enough or a show like that, but with adults.
