You can find the rape sequences, and the aftermath with Holly driving to the hospital, in clip form.

I watched the rape and the aftermath. Some really good acting by Zaslow and Garrett!!

And the rape scene was done very well. I like how at one point the camera was behind the bed, looking from Holly's perspective at Roger. Or how at point before they got to bed, the camera was looking at Roger from Holly's perspective as she was stepping away and Roger was walking towards her, looking directly into the camera. So good!

    Really good stuff here!!

You're welcome! I just edited my post to share what I do know about the Philip saga. If you haven't watched the two 1977 episodes that are out there that were included on the DVD set, watch those, too! There is early Spaulding drama there, too.

Oh thank you so much!! I just remembered that I actually have a GL dvd which was issued for German market that I never ever opened. I believe some 70s episodes should be there. Probably those you mention. I will have to check it out.

For many years only Jackie knew, which is why a confused Alan belittles Jackie for hurting so much over the custody loss and over the mind games he played with Philip to try to turn him against Elizabeth. By late 1980, Elizabeth learns the truth (I'm not sure if she also finds out Jackie is Philip's mother) and begins removing herself from Philip's life as she thinks it's the right thing to do. In 1980 or 1981, Jackie tells Justin - they talk about it when she gives birth to Samantha, and Diane overhears them.

You can find the rape sequences, and the aftermath with Holly driving to the hospital, in clip form.

Oh wow!! Now that scene has a whole new level, knowing Jackie's pain. Oh wow!! Thank yoi for the explanation and for sharing the rape episode. I will most certainly watch it!!

Philip, biologically, is Jackie and Justin's son from a marriage that took place before any of the characters came to Springfield. Someone else who knows more about it than I do might be able to share the details of the rest of that backstory.

Roger is on trial for raping Holly. You might've just missed the episode where it actually takes place (March 6, 1979). Definitely go back and watch that one. It sucks that there aren't more consecutive episodes from throughout the time, but it's so easy to follow the stories, even with the large gaps.

Really? I never knew that! I was sure that Philip was Alan's son. I am shocked now lol But wait, does that mean that they don't know at this point in 79? Because during the Alan/Jackie fight scene, Alan makes a comment how Philip is not her son and she should be relieved he's gone to Elizabeth.

Oh really? Thanks, I will try and find this episode. Actually I only now started watching these old GL episodes and started with March 19 1979. I didn't see there was an earlier episode available. I will look for it. Thanks for letting me know!

Jackie and Justin had had a brief, unhappy marriage, which was, I think, one of the reasons she had given Philip up for adoption (Justin had never known about Philip).

It's still so disappointing to me that all the key moments of this story took place after Cindy Pickett left. I'd love to see her get an interview.

Wait, how did Jackie give Philip for adoption? Wasn't Philip only her stepson when she married Alan?

I just watched this a few weeks ago, and I agree with everything you said. CP played Jackie's disgust with Alan so well as she watched him feed all of that Mike hatred to Philip, and then you remind yourself of the inner conflict she's facing, knowing that she's pregnant with his child.

There are so many interesting characters on the show in this period - I'm currently obsessed with the deliciously shady Diane Ballard. She's that great archetype of the coolly calculating torch-carrier, devoted to dirty dealing in the name of the object of her affection. I don't know if she wants to be with Alan more than she just wants to be Alan.

Oh I did not yet get to see so much of Diane. I only saw two episodes of '79. But now I am looking forward to her.

But everyone else is really good and interesting.

I saw in this episode that Roger is on trial for something. Holly had a black eye and was afraid of Roger, so I guess he beat her?

  5. I am watching now March 20 1979. Elizabeth Spaulding just won custody of Philip and Alan is furious. The moment when Alan gets out of judge's chambers and goes over to Mike, pushing Jackie out of his way in the process.. wow, show some real disrespect and selfishness on Alan's part. And then when Alan was telling Philip how Mike won the case with lies... wow, Alan was really deceitful. But amazing story and great acting by Chris Bernau.

And then the fight scene between Jackie and Alan.. wow.. long uninterrupted scene of the two of the arguing and Jackie confronting Alan with his bad ways. Loved it.

I also enjoyed the dynamic between Jackie and Elizabeth. Were they friends? Or just respected each other for Philip's sake?

Unfortunately no. I looked for some for years. I bought some issues online through eBay. We have some sporadic issues from Dec 72 to late 74 (will sent some more too in this thread). I have all the issues from Dec 74 to Dec 78 which was the last one published. I am in the process of putting it online for you. Would love to create a website but I am not good enough for this I think ...

You are so awesome!! Thank you so much!

Bryna Laub was the woman behind the Daytime Serial newsletter. Before Soap Opera Digest there was nowhere that soap watchers could keep up with their shows (pre VCR) so Ms Laub began her newsletter of summaries that you could subsribe to.

Once SOD came along she was put out of business.

Does anyone know how long the newsletter continued?

Oh thank you, @Paul Raven! Are these available anywhere online? I know when I was searching for my usual soap history hunt that I did not run into this before...

As there hasn't been many discussion, are some of you interested in me starting 1976?

OMG yes please!! I love these synopses!!

@FrenchFan Thanks for all the synopsis. It is really awesome to see months also covered by Soap Digest and see the differences. SOD seemed to try to synopsise like a novel and Bryna is more recounting episode details, like a fan would. Both give details the other doesn't, so it is great to read. I have been busy trying to scan the magazines and things I  have so sorry I have not been more active. But since Melbourne is on a further lockdown I will have time to get more done.

Sorry to ask, but what or who is Bryna? :) I love episode details too... any soap history details :D

  9. Does anyone know why Brash and Cwikly never came back to DAYS? I seem to remember their short stint was quite popular with the fans back in 2002. They started that mysterious Stefano storyline with the presents Stefano left to everyone. I like that period. It seemed very refreshing after Langan (even though I like some of Langan stuff), but Brash/Cwikly stuff seemed so much more interesting.

  10. I don't think it is not possible. I don't think new pairings can reach the same height of popularity as the original super couple, but they don't have to be.

For me, Hope really worked with Aidan. And then the show decided to turn Aidan into a lunatic. So even when they had something, the show just blew it with their bad choices.

This is why supercouples are actually bad. They make characters involved very difficult to sell in other stories/pairings.

  11. I always thought that for all four soaps (GL, ATWT, AMC and OLTL) before cancelling them, they should have at least tried going down to 30 min. It would slash the budget and maybe make it a tighter show more appealing to viewers with less filler. Shame that either CBS nor ABC even attempted this before just pulling the plug.

I think it could have worked, since a lot of people said they don't have as much time to watch soaps (so 30 min is better than 60 min) and with tighter cast and less filler it could make for more interesting and dynamic stories.

  12. While I haven't watched DAYS in years, reading this just makes me sad. Hope was one of my favorite characters. I don't know what she became in recent years, but she is an iconic character as well as Kristian being a recognizable face of DAYS and daytime in general. I doubt she filled any real goodbye scenes, so having Hope be a character that will just disappear without a real goodbye is just heartbreaking and IMO another nail in the coffin of DAYS.

I've seen clips off Ned, April, etc...they looked too old to be high schoolers lol

Character I'm intrigued by was Cecelia cause the three actresses playing her were so different.

Well considering that Luke Perry went on to play a high schooler Dylan McKay three years later on 90210, I guess him playing a high schooler on Loving is fine :D

  14. Yes, they really introduced too many of the new characters. And not only new characters, but recasts of important characters...

Personally I never liked Gordon Thomson as Mason either or Eileen Davidson as Kelly, so having the two front and center also did not help as they did not feel like the established characters that I loved, but rather new characters. I was okay with Michael Brainard as Ted, but still...

I felt like aside from CC, Sophia, Julia and Gina, you did not really have many long running characters...

  15. This was my first American daytime soap opera that I watched in my life. I was a kid back then, but I remember so many moments and scenes that happened... it was so immensely popular in my country. At one point everyone was watching it. Even today, I think you bring up the names C.C. Capwell or Cruz and Eden to my generation of people or older, they will know what it is about.

Show was so huge that during the war here, when people were in bomb shelters and without a TV, they were doing recaps over the radio so that people can listen while in the shelter.

There is also a funny story related to SB... while they were airing the storyline with Eden in the wheelchair, one old woman here went to the church and gave her priest some money so that he would hold a mass in honor of Eden walking again :D

While I just hated the final years, I must say, I was a huge fan of the early and middle years. It will always be one of my favorite soaps.

My love for Robin Wright was born here. I was a huge Mason and Julia fan and still love both Lane Davies and Nancy Lee Grahn. Gina and Keith were so fun to watch as a devilish duo.

I still remember Eden's rape and how violet it was. I remember dear sweet Hayley dying after being hit by a car. Crazy Elena Nicholas dropping Eden in those snowy mountains. I remember Mason being punched in the face, falling down behind a couch and once he got up, we had a new Mason actor :D

    So many fond memories! :)

Whose writing did people like the most?  I remember enjoying much of Margaret DePriest's run.

I think I would say Meg Bennett, I guess... simply because that middle year was my favorite...

I loved the Shockwave storyline and along side AMC Tornado of 94, this was my favorite soap opera disaster storyline.

I did enjoy the start of Antonio/Gabi/Ricardo, I was into the Maria storyline (and one of my favorite cliffhangers is Maria showing up at Ben and Meg's wedding to catch the bouquet).

I did hate the Rosario jewels storyline. It was so ridiculous.

I felt like the first year of the show, the show was moving so fast, people were coming and going... and then the last year, it was the opposite, IMO.. it slowed down too much and I felt it dragged for too long. Event the baby switch storyline that I loved initially, was just soooo long, slow and repetitive by the time it ended.
