I think the writers were morphing Alex into BM's previous character, Iris. By making Alex more neurotic toward the men in her life -- sons, husbands, love interests, etc., and using those neurosis as her main motivations. BM may have felt that Alex was becoming as difficult to play as Iris had been on Another World. And this would have been more challenging to sustain for the actress. Just my opinion. I didn't even agree with Bev about Alexandra. I thought her character acted as any other main character on a soap. It's not like she killed someone or raped a major character. Holly kidnapped kids, Philip went crazy, Beth went crazy, Roger went crazy. Her character got a great edit. IMO Imagine playing a Roger Thorpe in the 1970s that raped/attempted rape several women. @Contessa Donatella My reply ended up in the wrong section somehow. I don't know. Maybe, due to me liking the first Hart the best. I don't get why they didn't keep Jeff Phillips. It was bad enough the writers suddenly didn't care about how old Hart would have to be to make the story work. I could see Jeff Phillip's Hart as being a down to earth farmer. I am just trying to get how Frank's version of Hart (who is obviously near 30) being Roger's son. Then I looked up ages and my mind is blown how Zaslow was 27 years older than Wendy and Toby! Heck, I didn't know that Michelle Forbes was only 22 in 1987 when her role started. Come to think of it, Bridget was playing a teen at 24/25 and Michelle was playing a psychiatrist at 24. Crazy!

I find that so funny, but so interesting at the same time! I found 70s Roger way too intense, but intriguing. I would be too scared to even say hello to him. I am glad I bought one old SOD magazine from when Michael played David on One Life To Live. The interviewer basically got to date Michael (she met with him for hours doing a lot of activities for like 3 different days & was at his photo shoot). She even told him how intimidating he came off and he basically said that is why he thought it was time to stop playing Roger. Michael also said that he got burnt by the press once and does anyone know what that was about? Was it the end of his first marriage?

I was watching a 1990 episode on Springfield Story, and I can't believe it! Roger asked Vanessa out to the party Alexandra threw for Beth! You could knock me down with a feather! I wish I knew what exact date it aired. Speaking of Betty Rea, I found an article from 1995 about her. However, I don't have a subscription to the Chicago Tribune. Does anyone have a subscription?

IMO, Frank was good looking, but not sexy. I liked him best with Sherry's version of Blake. I wish they did more with them while Sherry was there. The OG Eleni was a good pairing too. I guess if I were to pick, Josh would be the type I would find the most attractive, but I didn't care for how he would dump every woman for Reva. It became a turn off. I liked characters like Jack Deveraux (Matthew Ashford's version) from Days of Our Lives. I didn't really see that type of guy on Guiding Light. Jack gave that David Addison from Moonlighting type vibe that I find attractive/sexy. I never found Ross sexy or attractive. I saw him as a safety thing. I actually thought he and Holly were better than Bloss (unpopular opinion, I know). I couldn't stand Phillip nor Rick. Sure, at times their friendship was good, but I wouldn't half way be attracted to either of them. Both were just as selfish (if not more) as Roger. However, I thought the actors brought their A game with providing drama and showing a bro friendship. I found Nick attractive, but maybe due to finding out how he (Vincent) would be in a relationship off camera with whoever was playing Mindy turned me off. He may be the reason Kim Simms (my fav Mindy) really didn't return. I think of Roger as a sort of father type figure that I cared way too much about. I wanted him to always win, even though he didn't deserve to. I thought the OG Alexandra and 2nd Mindy (Simms) brought out the best romantic side of him and worst in him. Holly and him were too back and forth (great chemistry though)...never any progress and then in 94/95 it went to crap. I wish they built more out of the friendship with Maureen Bauer. Something that would teach him that not all male/female relationships are sexually based. I forgot to add that I found Roger's and Sonni's short relationship the most sexy for Roger. Loved Michael's voice...sexiest thing about him.

@Contessa Donatella I can't get into today's soaps. I haven't watched any in so long and when I did, I would just go to YouTube to get a general sense what was going on and it didn't pull me in. Maybe, it's a nostalgic thing for me. When it hits late 90s, I just don't click with any of them. So much botox and fake looks.

@chrisml I 100% agree. That death was not thought out. Ed was not that much of an interesting character to me. He was the reason Maureen died. Why would I want to follow his story? And Rick? He was a guy that I didn't like at all. So, when I read that Harley and him got together...it boggles my mind! @Speed Racer I just didn't like what Alan Michael changed into. He was a totally different person with Rick Herst. Perhaps I a just wanted Hamp and Gilly still together. It just didn't click with me for some reason.

@Contessa Donatella I liked Harley with both versions of Alan Michael. I liked Harley and Nadine more than Reva. My taste has changed from when I was viewing Daytime Soaps. Neither of my Grand Mothers watched soaps. My mom did when she wasn't working and basically watched ABC soaps. I only watched bits of storylines during the summer vacation or winter break. I liked Days at the time. I was into Jack Deveraux (I didn't care one way or another about Jennifer), Eve and Izzy B. I only recall Harley from Guiding Light. I only remember her and Marah (and Josh). I didn't watch Another World, As the World Turns, Guiding Light, Edge of Night, Ryan's Hope, etc. Now, I can't seem to get into watching old Days of Our Lives and General Hospital episodes. I was pulled into watching Guiding Light with some post with Roger and Holly's major rape storyline. Maybe, due to not knowing where how major storylines ended.

@Contessa Donatella I think at that time, there really wasn't a pull for Guiding Light for younger viewers once the original Four Musketeers and Lucjack storylines ended. They tried with Bridget, etc., but those storylines still don't click for me. It wouldn't have pulled me in as a teen. Hart wasn't all that to me. I could care less about his love life. David and Kat ended up separating Hamp and Gilly, so I didn't like them either. Bridget became annoying to me. Always pining for Hart when he flat out told her he wanted Julie, not her. If only Maureen stayed and there would be another tie to the Bauers and Roger, who he hated with a passion, but Maureen. @Speed Racer I didn't buy Alan Michael as a owner of a newspaper in the first place. That's why I never was into Gilly and Alan Michael. I only liked Alan Michael with Harley.

@Contessa Donatella After reading the article you posted, I truly believe that Proctor & Gamble did a decent job promoting the show at the time that article was written. However, the show relied on Reva's character way too much and re-introduced past characters way too late. The show became two different shows. The Reva Show and Guiding Light. I also figured out how to post my favorite from April 1979 in my previous post. This is what I want from a Soap Opera!

@DeeVee I read about the vasectomy and thought that was ridiculous! No way would Roger do that. Why would Peggy do that? Mindy was the one obsessed on having a baby, not Roger. Thankfully, the German dubbed channel had a Closed-Captioned episode not shown with Blake Marler's channel where they first talk about it during Lizzie's Christening. Roger loved babies, but pretty much thought having another would never happen. @Contessa Donatella I recall watching some Guiding Light press kit in video form where Michael Zaslow praised the Lillian with breast cancer storyline. People mentioned how (before his ALS illness caused a mental health crisis) Michael was always up to date on all the storylines. I need to learn to post YouTube vids here for an example of good writing can do.

I would have had India stay to be the reason Roger got back what he brought into the marriage. He helped her out, so she owed him a big favor. Plus, she had to stay to talk to the authorities about Gary and Philip. I agree that they hadn't built her character enough. I guess the introduction of Jenna made it not possible for India to be in AC Mallet's orbit anymore and they had him in the stupid storyline with Francesca. Ugh, I guess I see why India left. Instead of Jenna, it should have been Alexandra and connections with Alan that helped hide Hart. Although, I think that character was a waste as he was re-casted so many times and gone for 2 years...I wouldn't have created him.

I don't know what the writers were thinking. They weren't writing Roger as Roger since 95 with the whole Dinah thing to me. Were there a new group of writers at that time? WSPR meant a lot to Roger and made it a huge success with the talent of Gilly. Why would he try embezzling again when it didn't work with Alexandra when all he had to do was annul the marriage? Just to find a son he who basically abandoned Peter to me. With how these writers were, Roger would have been the one kidnapping the kids and not Holly. LOL @Contessa Donatella That is ridiculous! How in the world is a scam when you don't even get money? @alwaysAMC My conspiracy brain thinks that is when they were planning on getting firing Michael Zaslow and that is why they decided to get rid of it.

Toby did a good job of at first not believing that the birth certificate is even real and then she blows up in anger. She was even mad at Roger for bringing it up in the first place. Remember, the first will was moot since Brandon wasn't dead (and the 2nd everyone thought Alan was dead) and Victoria didn't want anything to do with Spaulding (smart woman). Roger is a VP as is Amanda. They requested that all Spaulding stock was frozen until the matter was settled by a judge at the board meeting when Alexandra showed up. Phillip voted against it and Alan declined to vote. Amanda letting Holly overhear was stupid on Amanda's part, but it gets Holly into Roger's orbit again. Unfortunately, this is when Micheal Zaslow's voice change was really noticeable. What could have been! Makes me melancholy. The thing I didn't like was Amanda being all jealous of Holly. They already did that with Jenna. Then when Michael left, the show dropped it entirely to me and went straight into the Amanda is jealous of Holly, trying to make Roger jealous with getting Ross to run for DA and the whole Annie was thrown off the balcony stairs and lost her baby debacle. Amanda even unfroze all the assets and made Alan part of Spaulding again. To top it off, the Lame Roger acted like Alan more than Roger.
