Ratings from the 70's
All My Children knocked out AW and ATWT during August and September 1978 and was Number 1 for the 1978 to 1979 season. General Hospital and Y&R also knocked AW and ATWT out of the top 3 during August to Nov. 1978. ATWT and AW were tied in the ratings but ATWT had a higher share so it took the crown for 1977 to 1978 season. 1977–1978 Season 1. As the World Turns 8.6/31 share 2. Another World 8.6/28 share 3. All My Children 8.4/31 share 4. Guiding Light 8.0 5. The Young and the Restless 7.8 6. Search for Tomorrow 7.5 7. One Life to Live 7.2 8. Ryan's Hope 7.0/28 share 9. General Hospital 7.0/23 share 10. Actually Y and R was moved to try to defeat AMC by starting at the earlier start at 12:30PM on June 8, 1981 (42 years ago today). Y and R was going up against Ryan's Hope on ABC and easily dominated the 12:30 pm to 1PM EST time slot, but AMC would beat Y & R from the 1 to 1:30 slot. Eventually Y and R dominated Ryan's Hope and was able to defeat AMC in the 1:00PM slot which is what allowed Y and R to go to Number 1 in the ratings. Ryan's Hope was cancelled in 1989.

Actually she was okay with it - she said Kay just got a little too close with JOann. She LOVED Kay and Y&R. She watched it until she died at 92 which was in '92.

How close for the Number 1 spot - AMC, AW, ATWT and Y & R. Surprised Ryan's Hope beating One Life and GH.

Surge of new (mostly younger and college aged) viewers flocked to ABC especially to GH. Yes Y&R was strong but expanding to an 1 hour and then the changing time slots stymied its progress. The same thing happened to All My Children. When Ryan's Hope premiered in July 1975, ABC gave RH AMC spot at 1 and moved AMC to 12:30. AMC's ratings slightly dipped and AMC's progress slowed. It was until January 1977 that AMC got its 1pm slot back and RH to 12:30 that AMC ratings got back to where they were and in April 1977 AMC went to an hour and the ratings went much higher.

Agnes Nixon saved Another World from being canceled in the late 1960s and it rose to No. 2 in the ratings defeating General Hospital in the time slot. When ABC saw what Agnes Nixon did with AW and what happened to GH, ABC approached Nixon to create a soap for ABC....One Life to Live debuted in January 1968 and Nixon finished up her headwriting duties at AW. Then based on OLTL's performance, ABC wanted another soap. Agnes presented All My Children to ABC and the rest is history. AW was near the top of the ratings from the late 1960s until its collapse in 1979 with GH's giant rise.

Thanks for these ratings. All My Children beginning its rise to Number 1 for the 78 to 79 season and finishing Number 3 in the 77 to 78 season. Interesting to see Another World and As the World Turns as well as AMC battle it out for Number 1 and within the top 3 spots. Also Shocking that Ryan's Hope is higher than General Hospital. GH was slated for cancellation by Fred Silverman until Gloria Monty saved it.

One Life to Live Tribute Thread
Sadie was not in that episode. Lillian Hayman got cut by Paul Rauch in 1986. According to Ellen's book, Lillian was walking to her car to drive home after taping when Paul Rauch's assistant ran out to catch her and tell her she taped her last show that day. Lillian was locked out of the studio but got there early the next day and security guards who were friendly with her let in and helped her box up her stuff. She was an original cast member since 1968! There is a special place in hell for Paul Rauch after what he did to Ellen and Lillian.

In 1982 and 1983, All My Children began to strongly challenge GH for the top spot. For the 1982-83 season: 1. General Hospital 9.8 2. All My Children 9.4 3. One Life to Live 9.1 Considering AMC competed against Y&R and DAYS and GH had weaker competition against GL, AMC was the stronger show. Thanks for posting these ratings!

Yes that is true! Agnes told Jackie on what needed to be done at GH. ABC then put their plan together for GH.

The rise started in late 1978 and 1979 with All My Children hitting No. 1 for the 78/79 season with GH a close second and increased further in 79 and 80. All My Children was an important and vital show to ABC's success than. Most people credit GH but it is AMC. GH did not have the competition of AMC vs. Y & R.

Silverman was trying to create a 3hour serial/daytime drama block gradually. He left OLTL for expansion last since the show had fierce competition with ATWT and AW. Once OLTL expanded, ATWT was being strongly challenged by AMC and AW and eventually fell from the top. OLTL also was the lowest ranked among AMC and GH and OLTL so Fred Silverman did it gradually. At the end, a strong 3 hour block was created and last it almost 35 years on ABC.

You should watch the interviews with Fred Silverman when he was at ABC on the EMMYs website and also on Youtube. Fred was a fan of Agnes Nixon's All My Children and of Agnes. When Fred came to ABC, GH was a mess and Fred was the one who said either you improve this or it is gone. When things got better at GH and OLTL he expanded them to 45 then to an 1 hour. It was All My Children that was the leader when Fred took over and remained ABC's top soap until 1980.

Interesting to see ATWT s the 3rd highest soap with the Doctors and Day ahead. All My Children is also very strong early on. I wonder where OLTL is at this time. WOW! Watergate shook up the soaps. All My Children is the second highest rated soap just 0.1 of a ratings point behind ATWT.

DAYS OF OUR LIVES Moves to Peacock From NBC on September 12
Whether Days is on Peacock after Sept. 2023 when the current contract runs out remains to be seen. Honestly, I do not see Days surviving past Sept. 2023. Moving it to Peacock was because of the contract. The ratings will not be significantly higher on Peacock especially since Days will be in Peacock Premium. I do not think Comcast/Universal is going to turn DAYS into a telenovela. NBC should have just cancelled Days and let it finish up on NBC through Sept. 23. It is all about money. Making it and saving all the costs.

DAYS OF OUR LIVES Moves to Peacock From NBC on September 12
Very rushed. I think what will happen is that the shows that have already been taped by DAYS will go to Peacock. Supposedly they are doing January 2023 then the rest of the shows will be taped for the rest of the season to run through Sept. 2023 as per the contract. Then in Sept. 2023 DAYS will be cancelled or reformatted into a 3 episode week for streaming.
