She came out and said it in another interview about being fired because of their previous relationship. I think she's referring to Rauch here. I wish I could find the other interview although there might be more than one. She's not shy about giving her side of the story. Liz Keifer made it clear she didn't respect Paul Rauch very much so I can only imagine what she witness on on OLTL and GL.

She said there was definite friction from that, but it was Rauch's arrival that sealed her fate. From what I remember, Louise Sorel said in an interview that she knew she was going to be fired once she knew Rauch was coming to Santa Barbara. I know she did an interview with welovesoaps as well, but their site seems to be down at least for me at the moment.

Paul Rauch mistreated Louise Sorel at Santa Barbara. She was let go because they had had a previous relationship when she was on OLTL. There was the Roscoe Born thing where he got into it with Paul Rauch and Roberta Bizeau/Weiss was fired as a result. Whether she was just fired as revenge or Rauch did something, who knows? I think I remember that Roscoe Born even wrote a song about Rauch and sent it to everyone. I think a lot of it is that women were used to this kind of treatment and saw it as normal because these men just went from show to show doing the same thing. A lot of women do blame other women for not being tough enough/not standing up for themselves. Women like Zimmer also were constantly competing against other women for roles and attention (maybe not Slezak so much) and most of their scene partners were men. I think that's why some women of Zimmer's age group come out and complain that metoo "went too far." I don't know if Zimmer has ever spoken about metoo or harassment behind the scenes in the soap world so I don't know what she would say.

Liz Keifer made it clear in one of the Locher room interviews that Rauch had a type and it was not women over a certain age. Too many women also will overlook men like Rauch if they are not harassed. We see that all that time. The fact that Zimmer would know what Rauch did and call him her favorite producer says a lot. It's this kind of thinking: "He liked me and made me a front burner character again so I'll overlook him being a predator."

Liz Keifer also made some comments about Paul Rauch and her time at OLTL. She made it clear he was a bit of a creep but I don't think he did anything to her based on what she said. In Michael Zaslow's book, he mentions Rauch's reputation for harassing women. Zimmer obviously would have known this, but perhaps didn't mind as that kind of stuff was overlooked. Erika Slezak also praised him. As a side note, it's interesting how much information the Locher Room interviews provide us. I know not everyone is an Alan Locher fan, but they have been quite invaluable.

No matter what you may think about Kim Zimmer or Reva, Zimmer's reel for her third win was fantastic. I'm not surprised she won especially against the Jeanne Cooper twin nonsense. That's what a reel should be, and when you compare it to the stuff Susan Lucci would submit, it's maddening that Lucci was nominated so often and would take slots from worthy nominees. @alwaysAMCI assume Larkin Malloy and Susan Pratt were a good fit on AMC because they were over there for a number of years. I am not judging them for the mess that was 1986 GL because yeesh.

Kim Zimmer always showed appreciation for Larkin Malloy so she didn't have a problem with him as she thanked him years after he left in her acceptance speech for her third Emmy win. Also amusing Larkin Malloy was in Susan Lucci's clip when Zimmer won her second Emmy so he was not unemployed for long. I remember Zimmer saying she submitted one comedic/lightweight episode and one very serious episode for her second Emmy win, but I don't remember where I saw that. She somewhat did that with her third Emmy win when she submitted Reva's wedding day and Reva confronting her abuser. For those interested, here is Zimmer's speech and her entire reel for her third Emmy win: (Vince Williams has a small but pivotal part in her second reel)

I wonder if Malloy just quit and they quickly came up with something because I saw those scenes you mention and they don't make sense. There's a lot of venom aimed at Kyle too that seems misplaced. "You don't belong here, Kyle!" I haven't seen the episode that the Emmy clip is taken from, but your reaction to it made me chuckle. You know 1986 was bad when Zimmer references the difficult time with the material during her acceptance speech.

It's even worse than I thought as I had missed some of the episodes and thought there was a longer gap. So insulting to the viewers. I now understand why my mother was so angry. She is still angry almost 40 yrs. later. This is what soap execs never understand. You don't insult your viewers, but so they always took the viewers for granted until it was too late. And this is why I assumed they were telling a Reva is Mindy's mom story because it did feel like they were dressing/writing Mindy as a mini-Reva. I gave them credit for coming up with a story when it was just them being lazy and incompetent.

Exactly. It makes no sense to reunite them because Reva was declaring her undying love for Kyle. It makes Reva look like an idiot. I really have no interest in watching these 1986 episodes now because it just feels so lazy. Kim Zimmer said she got so much hate mail at this time for how Reva abandoned Kyle and went back to Josh. It makes sense why viewers would be livid. My mother stopped watching around this time. I know the shot you're referring to. And a good EP would have made sure that never happened. The producers just didn't care. I'm surprised Zimmer didn't say anything or maybe she had given up by that point and was just going through the motions with the hair and makeup. I feel for her as she and Tesreau deserve better.

Youtube autoplay sent me to an episode later in 1986 where Josh is back and Reva and Josh are making out. This is mere weeks after Reva is declaring Kyle is the love of her life. I now see why my mother stopped watching (mother was not a fan of Josh per our discussion). This is the kind of whiplash storytelling that drives viewers like my mother away. It reminds me of AW where we spent over a whole year investing in Cass and Nicole and then Swajeski came in and dismantled it for ridiculousness. At various points in 1986, they have Kim Zimmer and Krista Tesreau looking identical to each other. Their hairstyle and clothing were the same. I thought perhaps the writers had attempted to tell a "Reva is Mindy's mother story" but it was just laziness on the hair/customer's part. One such example is at 3 minutes and 50 seconds into this video. Another commenter had the same idea.

I created a monster. My mother messaged me: "I remembered something else. They played the Kenny Loggins song every time Reva and Kyle were in a room together. I loved that song. Can you find me the name?" I told her I believe it was "Forever" (from clips I've seen) so we'll see if I'm right when she gets back with me. She had no interest in my explaining how I knew more about Frances Fisher's work on Edge of Night than what she did on GL. "Your grandmother might have watched that. I didn't." My mother and I never watched soaps together. She either watched the soaps at work or while I was at school. I watched soaps with my grandmother. Soaps were always talked about, but if you're not watching the same soaps, you remember certain details, but that's about it.

My mother was an infrequent GL watcher but I knew she watched during the Reva/Kyle time. When I talked to her today, I asked her about it. These are her thoughts: Kyle/Reva were her favorite couple (editorial note: in order not to be disinherited, I said nothing). Maeve had no business breaking them up but she liked Maeve and Vanessa's voices (?). She thought Fletcher was the best looking man on the show. My mother is a nurse and remembered a storyline about someone having syphillis or an STD. She doesn't remember who. I had no idea who she was talking about. She didn't remember "Cain" but when I described a little bit of the story, she said, "Was he the lunatic in the cabin?" She thought Jessie was just the cutest thing and wanted me to tell her what happened with Jessie and Simon. She was annoyed I didn't know. She remembered some redhead and Lujack. I think she was talking about Frances Fisher so I told her that was before all of this and Lujack was dead at this point. I didn't know that storyline so couldn't help her much and that was it.

Unless you're a completist, I don't know if you want to subject yourself to the Cain storyline. It's awful. If you watch the last two minutes of the video I posted above (talking about the lack of quality control), that should be enough. You've endured enough bad storylines with your 95/96 watch of GL. It was someone else's turn. 🤣 The acting is just so over top that it's mentally exhausting to watch the show. There are a few laugh out loud over the top moments, but most of it is just annoying and grating. The fact that no director or EP stepped forward to tell some of these actors to dial it back is astonishing to me.

I know Leslie Denniston was not well liked but she's the only one (minus a few Zimmer moments where she's allowed to shine) who resembles an actual human being in the whole Cain/Reva/Kyle/Maeve storyline. I really like her and she's the only who I think is giving a credible performance. It must have been hard when she's acting opposite Larkin Malloy who is terrible. I find him near unwatchable. Every time he's in a scene with someone, he always acts as if he's about to headbutt someone when he wants to show emotion/emphasis. In this scene, the writers again mention the engagement ring and the deed. In three week's worth of episodes, I've now heard about those two items around 25 times. I wish I were joking. I don't think Another World mentioned the Red Swan as much. If I made up a drinking game over the ring and deed, I'd have died from alcohol poisoning.

P&G is responsible for the mess if both AW and GL are going through the same thing in 1986. I'm not versed on production history pre-1986 for either show but my sense is AW was having problems for longer than GL. Someone was asleep over at P&G or just didn't care. GL feels as if it's being written during a writer's strike. As an idea of what I'm talking about with how bad GL got in terms of overall quality control, I give you last two minutes or so of this video:

I noticed the same thing with Another World during the similar time frame. The writing and direction quality were erratic depending on the day. I am enjoying AW more, but it's not much of a compliment. The acting is stronger on AW in 1986 than on GL. It feels like the writers at GL don't know who these characters are and the dialogue reflects that. The writing on GL is so generic at times that the dialogue could be switched to other characters and you wouldn't even notice.

From what I've seen of 1986's GL, it feels like a lot of it is just the idiot plot in full force. If any of the characters would starting acting like they have brain cells, the stories would be over. The quality of the show doesn't feel as strong either. The direction is quite lazy. Claire is thrown off a bridge at one point, and it's so badly choreographed and directed.

Most of what I've seen so far of 1986 is the Kyle/Reva/Cain/Maeve/Fletcher/Claire stuff. It's dominated the show. I can see why some viewers might have turned out because it's just so repetitive. I feel like I've watched Kyle and Reva have the same conversation at least ten times. If I heard Maeve mention the engagement and the deed to Reva's house one more time... I think we're done with that (fingers crossed) as now Maeve and Fletcher seem to be headed into a romance so no more deed talk. It's also kind of icky that H.B. keeps saying that he's loved Reva since she was a baby when I know he married her at some point in the show.

Pratt is not boring. I will give her that. I just don't know what to make of the character. Even though I never watched this period, I know of some of the 1986 stories from reading about them, but her character is the one that eludes me beyond the Fletcher/Maureen/Ed/Claire stuff. I assume she doesn't last much longer as I know Fletcher goes on to have a relationship with Maeve.

Guiding Light Discussion Thread
The more I see of 1986 the more I wish they had tried out a Fletcher/Reva relationship. I like them together. I also just like Fletcher in general. I know he's not a fave around these parts, but I like him a lot in the 1986 episodes. It probably helps that other characters have to spout some extremely melodramatic dialogue. Poor Larkin Malloy. Maeve keeping Ben away from Kyle makes no sense and it makes everyone look like fools. I haven't seen the infamous Calla. She must have left already. I might have to go further back to see what all the fuss was about. I can't decide if Susan Pratt is just completely over the top over or if her character is meant to be a lunatic. Her line readings are really bizarre.

I think Zimmer got spooked by the accusations of "homophobia" which were even in the mainstream press. She started to over-explain because she was angry. Those are the stories I remembered. Same thing happened with her memoir. She wrote it out of anger (primarily at Wheeler and P&G) and she was loose with the facts/details. She shouldn't have had to explain as Weary was too young for the change in storyline. I also think wires got crossed in the press (intentionally or unintentionally) because I think the homophobe in the situation was Martha Byrne since we all know how that turned out/continues to play out. I wonder too if someone at GL or P&G was using the homophobia accusations to get back at Zimmer. In looking at some of the articles, it feels very targeted. @Mitch64I don't think working with gay men makes someone less homophobic. Someone can have work colleagues, gay friends, and gay relatives and still be homophobic. They can still think of these gay men as less than even if they don't always articulate those feelings. I don't suggest Kim Zimmer feels/felt that way at all.

Vee, I'm sorry to confuse you. I mean to use your post to attach to the Ehlers discussion, but it attached to my Kim Zimmer post. The decades old Beth Ehlers thread covers a lot of what we are now discussion about Zimmer's blind item so I thought it would be helpful for people. I often forget you can't do two posts so soon after each other because they're combined. I don't think Kim Zimmer is homophobic, but her stories did change about why Weary left ATWT. And that's why there were constant questions about it because she kept explaining herself. It felt like Zimmer was overexplaining because she was getting accused of being homophobic so then the overexplaining just made people suspicious. I love messy people, but it would be nice to have someone reliable when he/she is writing about bts stuff on a show. It feels like so many people on GL have no idea what was really going on at GL or choose not to know.
