  1. ^  Thank you LTM1997 and YRfan23! What a treasure!

Margaret Mason’s Eve is scary AF!  It’s really refreshing to see Victor so vulnerable. Loved how he was so drained that he couldn’t speak, and he just waved everyone away.

The Jack hospital scenes were fantastic. Is it wrong that I was thinking Terry Lester looks hot in his hospital speedo?
Loved the glimpses of DA’s Jill. She can do so much with just a look. The fact that she is married to John doesn’t matter – she is insecure as ever.
I didn’t realize that Patty was initially going to shoot herself before Jack talked her out of it, and she shot him instead! What a shame that Lilibet Stern quit right before then. Those scenes would have been even better with her.  The fact that Patty has no memory of the shooting and is being a supportive wife lends a creepy subtext.

Wow, that whole action sequence with the Williams family was so expensive and elaborate! Exploding houses and ranch location shoots. It was all well-done… but to me these mob stories don’t fit the YR brand. Like at the end of the sequence, when the guy (Alex?) was dying, Nadia’s theme was playing… doesn’t feel like these 2 things go together. Were fans clamoring for this type of story? Or was BB chasing trends that were doing well on other soaps?  Anyway… never thought I’d see Mary Williams in the midst of a fight scene, lol! Pretty cool. And Steven Ford is in his element as an action hero. More so I’d say than a romantic lead.

One crazy side-note of this whole mob story is that Tony DiSalvo got married to Nikki! bc he had a sex tape of her, and she married him to get it back. I think the marriage wasn’t legal? But imagining Nikki in that story at all is pretty funny.

And then BB does an entirely new mob story from ’84-’85 with Tyrone and Jazz… which seems not to be too well-regarded either.

Full credits, how cool. From sometime earlier in ’83…Lilibet Stern is still listed.  And looks like Amy’s mom was on, Loretta Lewis - don’t think she was on much.  Directed by Edward Mallory – that’s Bill Horton from Days. Never knew that.

I remember these Traci pool scenes from the first week I watched YR! Really uncomfortable to have her detailing her weight loss efforts in front of all those people :\  If you couldn’t tell, Lauren was bending the truth that Danny asked her to marry him :)

Great to see the clips again of BD’s first day back – they used to be on YT.  Her acting was good here. Jill's dramatic reaction to Dina is more understandable once you realize she’s been drinking. First time seeing the follow-up scenes with Jack – really demonstrated the tension btw these two.

Cool how Victor and Miguel were speaking Spanish to each other. Wonder when/why they dropped that…

I just can’t buy Dorothy Maguire as Eric Braeden’s mom. Didn’t find these scenes moving. Anyone remember the explanation given for Victor having a German accent?

Nice scenes near the end with Ashley and Traci -  haven’t seen many one-on-one scenes with ED and BM. They have good sibling chemistry – affectionate one moment, angry the next.  Love Traci’s elaborate bedroom set, complete with giant Burt Reynolds poster. Back when soaps had budget for sets.

Carol!! Loved her relationship with Jack. Terry Lester, of course – not Peter Bergman, lol.

First time seeing Rick Daros (other than on the beach trying to kill Victor). He’s appealing. Trivia note: Randy Holland was also a writer for the show.

Nice finish to the video – Steven Ford in a bathing suit :)
  2. Does anyone exactly remember when Joanna talked John into getting an eye-lift? I would love to see that scene again someday.  I think it was sometime in the late '80s. I remember watching the original airing as a teen, and thinking it seemed really strange. It was like a PSA. Joanna was reassuring him, "everyone's doing it these days", and "don't be embarrassed to do it just because you're a man". It felt like "Katherine Chancellor's Facelift, the Sequel"

I'm not sure, but I imagine the point of the scene was because Jerry Douglas decided to have an eye-lift in real life?

Actually the actor quit due to family issues.  If I recall, his brother killed either their mom or dad...and the actor had to leave the show suddenly...hence why Bill bell killed him off.  It did kick off Nina vs jill/Kay in full force.....and Chase/Nina seemed more end game then the stupid bug.

Yep, and it was the end of TB's 3-year contract - it was his choice to leave. Agreed that Phillip and Nina's marriage did seem rushed. I guess Bill Bell had a deadline to set all the story pieces in place before TB left.

Andy’s goodbye gave more of a “I’ll see u later” vibe, especially during the phone scenes with Paul, I agree I wish they had a better goodbye, but maybe Bill Bell was trying to leave the door open....I know Andy came back years later for the 30th anniversary...was he still with Faren, I forget?

i guess this is also the final months we see Paul in his more dingy office and he moves up to a more cooperate looking one, with Nathan and Lynne on the way.

i like seeing more of the feistier spit fire Lauren, but I was stunned that she actually complimented Traci, “she’s a terrific person”  etc...I didn’t realized she already her her hotel suite set at this point too...

No, when Andy came back, he said he was divorced, which was sad... I guess that freed him up to a possible reunion with Susan Walters' Diane... which went nowhere.

From reading the earlier '87 synopses, I think the hotel suite is actually Joanna's, and Lauren moved in after splitting with Paul. And of course, Joanna eventually disappears but Lauren stays.

Hmmm Lauren's "compliment" seemed pretty back-handed! As soon as she said that, she says she can't imagine why Brad would stay with someone like Traci :)  To give Lauren credit, she does try to help Brad and Traci reunite after he is freed from Lisa's cage.

  5. ^ Yes, Conci Nelson is Kay Alden’s daughter… she played Betsy and came back to play Heather Stevens in the 90s. Fine young actress.

Thank you LTM1997 and YRfan23! This was a good ep. 1987 was not YR’s best year, IMO, but this December ep was setting up some good ’88 stories.

The first scene with Paul, Nathan, and Amy was not good… it seemed like all 3 of them were reading from cue cards.

Colleen Casey was a real find. Lovely presence and strong acting. Somehow the story was a dud, and she and Andy had to be written off. Maybe Steven Ford, as much I love him, wasn’t the right pairing for her. Nonetheless, these final scenes were very touching. Doesn’t seem like CC went on to do much more acting – shame. I’ve seen comments on this site about Faren’s “Sweeney Sisters” act – anyone have that link?

Leanna as a scheming threat is 100% times more enjoyable than the “comedic” version of 1991. I’m watching April ’91 now and she is insufferable.

Terry Lester! Always such a pleasure to see him. He hasn’t started wearing those ugly glasses from his final days. I liked how firm John was with Jack – that’s unusual.
  6. Finally watched episode 4. I am entranced by Lilibet Stern’s Patty! Combination of great acting and writing. What a loss her departure was. Her Patty has so many layers. It was fascinating to watch Carl slowly dismantle Patty’s Stepford demeanor, and present some excellent arguments against Patty’s plan. Carl smartly did not criticize Jack, no matter how much he wanted to. He accurately pointed out that it’s not fair to Jack, or anyone, for Patty to get pregnant in this manner.

But she is completely lost in her fantasy, and can not process his advice. Is Patty’s mindset within the realm of normal behavior, or is she demonstrating the beginnings of mental illness? She grew up in a stable household with loving parents. Reading the ’81 synopses, it appears that Patty went off the rails when she learned that Paul was not taking responsibility for baby Heather. She couldn’t believe that her big brother, who she admired so much, could act this way, and this threw her belief system awry. Soon after, she snuck out to a country bar and met Jack. I guess she transferred all her hopes and dreams of a stable life, from her own family to Jack.

On a superficial note – is that a mullet hairstyle she is rocking?  Not the most flattering, nor the dress. But LS’ beauty shines through

I always thought Mamie was on since 1980 with Jack and the first John....though I guess her role extended as The Abbotts became more prominent.......

So I guess Jack basically  lived in the house all by himself (With Mamie) for almost a whole year before Jerry Douglas came on as John in 1982, haha

I've seen some sources listing Marguerite Ray's debut as 1980. But the YR 25th book says 1982. Hmmmm

edit: here's MR's bio in her own words, and she says she was YR for 10 years http://oaklandtech.com/staff/centennial/2015/03/11/marguerite-ray-june-48/

  8. Anyone know exactly when Mamie debuted? I have a feeling that for awhile, she was referred to but not seen.  I noticed that happen in two of these "lost eps".  Same thing in the May '82 ep that used to be on YT, when Patty says Mamie was very welcoming after she moved in.

The first synopsis mention I see is after John and Jill's marriage, when Jill and Mamie argue over household finances.

Dickson said it was very jarring to her as she felt Jill was now being written as a villain. I always wondered because while I haven't actually seen the late '70s material I get that type of vibe from some of it.

I read this quote too, but it confused me.  From '78-'79, Jill tricked Stuart Brooks into marriage by pretending she was pregnant, and tried and failed to get a divorce settlement from him. For the rest of '79, before BD left, she went back to plotting with Derek how to fleece Katherine of her money.

So... seems like Jill of the late '70s was already a schemer - not sure why BD was so thrown off when she came back.

Jill's journey from the 1974 episode where she dreams about being rich and is introduced to Kay for the first time to these scenes where she is ready to marry another older rich man after the Phillip tragedy. She is not as naive anymore, she knows what she has to do. And she still believes that the answer to all her problems is finding a father figure to replace Bill Foster.

Ah, very interesting! Never considered this motivation but it makes perfect sense. I saw the scenes from '75 or '76 where Phillip (right before he dies) promises Jill he will financially take care of her family, and she looks so relieved.

Don't think Karen and Lucas have much chemistry, so I am surprised they end up heading out of GC together (or am I remembering wrong and they didn't)

Looking through the '82 SOD recaps - pretty certain they didn't leave town together. After this March episode just posted, I only see one more mention of Karen in the recaps, when she finally signs Andy's divorce papers.

Lucas stays on through summer '82 to help Lorie with her revenge plot against Victor (which she winds up abandoning when JLB quits). The 9/26/82 recap details Lorie leaving town and saying goodbye to Lucas, but I can't find any mention of him after that, so who knows if he got an official farewell scene? The only person left for him to possibly say goodbye to was Leslie.

Also can't find any farewell mentions for Chris or Greg.

It's kind of sad that the show decided to move away from Patty, and then Carl later on.....It seems like for all the conflict Patty had with Jack, they never gave her proper closure after she shot him.....wasn't she sent to a facility? I'm ignoring the MAB stuff with Patty obviously...

Again this was all @ltm1997! I wish there was more to share, but this will probably be the most we have of this year, until maybe somewhere down the line someone more generous provides more goodies....

Patty was still on the show for most of 1984, after she left Jack's orbit. She was brought into the Danny/Traci/Lauren story. Danny gave Patty hope that they could be together, but Danny was in the sham marriage with Traci, because Traci wanted it kept secret that she was pregnant with Professor Tim's baby.

I found the SOD recap (dated 12/4/84) covering Patty's departure!  "Patty has come to the realization that there is nothing left for her in GC. Danny and Traci appear to be getting closer to each other with each passing day. Besides, Danny blames Patty for Traci's accident. Arriving at the conclusion that her relationship with Danny is over, Patty tells her brother she's leaving town. Paul attempts to talk her out of the decision, but to no avail. Patty has a very touching farewell with her mother. It comes as a complete shock to Mary that her daughter is leaving, but Patty promises to return as soon as she can straighten out her personal life"

I think it's kind of sad after all those years of the Leslie/Lorie/Lance/Lucas mess, none of them wound up together. Lorie stood Victor up at the altar when she left town to go chase after Lance. We know from her return in 84 and 2002 she never got him back. The writers threw Lorie under the bus when she started whining how she made a mistake and not marrying Victor.

Poor Lucas. Leslie and Lorie did not want him at all. They fought over boring Lance. Even Vanessa his mother shafted Lucas in favor of Lance.

Casey wanted him! But she finally bailed when he could not separate himself from Leslie

  14. Just watched episode 2 - I love Deborah Adair's Jill, as evidenced by my avatar! :) I think she ranks as my favorite Jill of all. Agreed with @DRW50 that DA's Jill scenes with Liz didn't quite nail the mother-daughter dynamic. DA's Jill has a more refined, patrician way of speaking, and Liz is less refined... she'll leave the "g" off of words, like "thinkin" instead of "thinking". Jill was raised in the lower middle-class home by Liz, so this disparity doesn't really add up. But regardless, they're both fantastic. Interesting for Liz to note that Jack is older than Jill - not sure if I ever knew that. Or maybe this fact was "forgotten" once BD took back the role.

I do believe that Jill is in love with John Abbott.  I also believe she loves his money! :)  How ironic that Jack is so afraid that Jill will take some control of Jabot.  She eventually does... but only because of the scandal that ensued after he slept with her, lol!

I thought the Claire/janitor scene would end with Robert discovering them... not with Claire choking the janitor!! This fits in with the "gothic" tone that sometimes permeated YR from '79-'81.

This is the first time I'm seeing the Carolyn character, and she seems like a snoozefest. Kevin also, while cute, is milquetoast.  I think this ep is right when MTS leaves for maternity leave? Maybe this deal she made with God to leave Kevin is why she disappears for a few months.

Oh for some reason I thought these came after all that stuff.

Did she and Lance reunite by the time of the '84 appearance for the Brooks sisters? Was it mentioned in those episodes?

Yea, Leslie sticks around for another 6 months after Lance. Bill Bell wasn't quite ready to give up on Victoria Mallory!

Hmmm I've seen those '84 Brooks scenes but don't recall any mention of Lance being with either Lorie or Leslie.

  16. 6 hours ago, DRW50 said:

That Lance really is a prop, right to the end. The scenes are a bit twee but Bill Bell probably felt Leslie, and her fans, deserved a blissful goodbye after years of angst. Victoria Mallory did have great screen presence, beauty, and a lovely voice, in spite of not feeling quite right for the role. You can really feel the changing of the guard in this episode through - can you imagine Nikki singing her happiness?

Agreed... the scenes, while beautifully styled and set-designed, feel so outdated, like from a '60s musical. I found the Brooks child actor to be the most engaging, which is a problem.  Dennis Cole is a blank slate... a Ken doll. Victoria Mallory is trying her hardest, but I guess she is just lacking charisma... that "it factor". And it really takes away from these scenes to know that Lance soon leaves town alone, while Leslie starts a short-lived, ill-fated romance with Robert Laurence before also leaving town.

I read that Wes Kenney wanted the Stevens family gone for some reason when he took over as Co-Executive Producer.

I wish a few more characters from the 1973-1982 period could have stayed, as to tie all the decades of the show together more. JLB departure made Bill Bell pretty much scrap everything and reboot the show.

I've read all the SOD recaps from that time, and just reading everything about the Stevens family was sooooo boring. I saw the one New Years Eve 1982 ep with Bobbi, aka Barbara (April's twin), and she was not a good actress.

I really enjoyed Cynthia Eilbacher, though, when April came back in '93-'94.
