2023: The Directors and Writers Thread
Lorraine Broderick is a wonderful writer. After Agnes Nixon and Wisner Washam, I strongly believe Broderick was the single best head writer All My Children ever had. I think the show won most of their emmys for Outstanding Writing either under her co-headwritingship or solo headwritership. Sadly on DAYS I think she only focus on being a breakdown writer. She left all the creative ideas to the headwriter. Which is disappointing. Broderick's gift was her ability to bring realism, truth, honesty and grounded drama to the most outlandish stories. Qualities seriously lacking in Ron Carlivati's style of storytelling.

B/c this is classic plot writing. Of course Steve could have easily called his daughter and left a message on her cell phone. " Stephanie get to the hospital quick your mother is gravely ill. She may be dying." It would have taken Steve less than 30 seconds to leave that message. And the funny thing is if Steve had done that and Alex without reading the message still turned off Stephanie's cell the end result would still be the same and Steve would have remain pretty much in character. I can't see Steve allowing someone else who isn't apart of his family at trying to connect his child over a major family crisis.

carolineg I completely agree with your assessment. Ron clearly doesn't what the audience to be reminded of Ben's past crimes which crystallize Ron's lack of strong storytelling. Sure Ben is now regarded as a romantic lead but that shouldn't negate his past. By ignoring the past you're not only shortchanging the character but other characters as well. Not to mention limiting stories. Great writers like Agnes Nixon, Bill Bell, Douglas Marland, the Dobsons among others understood that. I also agree that in those scenes Will was supposed to be looked upon as the bad guy. That he was supposed to unreasonable whereas Sonny is the one making logic sense...which of course is absolutely ridiculous. But there's you have it. The only good thing that came from those scenes is the strong chemistry between Zack and Chandler. No they didn't turn the material into gold but they turn it into watchable silver.

The Sonny/Will scenes was just so annoying in that the show refuse to play the Ben Weston card and that's would have been the perfect time for it. Listening to Will going on and on about all the terrible things Leo has done - all of it 100% the truth - and Sonny just sitting there more or less just listening to it without having a truly realistic response by simply saying, "And what about your friendship with Ben Weston?!" if Sonny would have done that a floodgate of raw emotions could have been played out. Of course Will will try to justify his friendship with Ben with the weak argument that Ben has changed and that's he was mentally ill at the time. But Sonny would be easily able to crush that argument by retelling Will the night Sonny got the phone call telling him his husband was dead. Through gut wrenching details Sonny could tell Will about the horrifying emotions he went through thanks to Ben's violent actions. But not only did Sonny had to go through the agonizing pain but he reminds Will that their daughter had to go through that pain as well. And you expect me to be perfectly fine with your friendship with Ben? For the first time Will could truly understand just how painful his "death" was to the people he loves and how incredibly insensitive his friendship to Ben is to those around him. Those would have been some powerful, meaty scenes that both Zack and Chandler could have truly flex that acting muscles. It would have also made the scenes more compelling, more dramatic and much more realistic. I've been watching soaps for a long time and I've seen plenty of crap. But I've also seen crap saved by common sense storytelling by playing to simple logic. Why us it so difficult for Ron to do that?

I can help but think if DAYS was a UK soap the Will/Sonny/Chad story would be a major front burner. When confronted with the amazing chemistry between Zack, Chandler and Billy Flynn and combining the complex deep-rooted history all three characters shares with one another, a smart writer and producer would be exploiting that for storylines. The scenario is so good and complicated it could literally write itself. Here you have Chad mourning the death of his wife. He turns to his best friend for comfort and emotional support. As he's getting that comfort, much to his surprise, he's beginning to develop feelings towards Sonny. Feelings that he finds strange but not that all discomforting despite the fact he very much regards himself as straight. At first Sonny is oblivious but soon he becomes aware of it. At first Sonny tries to be rational about the situation, saying that Chad is only having these feelings towards him because of his loneliness. But as time goes on and Chad's feelings become stronger, Sonny begins crumbling, especially b/c he himself is feeling a sense of loneliness with Will being gone. Not to mention there has always been this playful, non-threatening platonic sexual tension between Chad and Sonny. Now that Chad seems to be having feelings for Sonny it's no longer non-threatening nor platonic. It's becoming very real, and it isn't long before both men are exploring their feelings emotionally and just as they are about to explore it physically, that's when Will shows up. And seeing how well Will knows his husband and his best friend, it doesn't take him long to figure out what's going on between them. Of course he's going to feel hurt and betrayed and naturally he's going to fight for his marriage. But at the same time, Will is surprisingly overcome with feelings of jealousy - jealousy that Chad would somehow prefer Sonny over him. And that is just scratching the surface. The complications of this storyline could easily be played out for months

In all seriousness if the show can't come up with a strong, compelling storyline for Wilson - which apparently, they can't - then at the very least the show should shamelessly exploit the couple's strong chemistry and keep them in a series of gratuitous sex scenes. Sometimes the scene can be sweet and tender. Other times it can be playful and naughty and other times it can be raunchy and nasty. Sure, they won't have a storyline with depth, but they would be a lot more fun to watch than what we're currently getting on screen with them.

Regarding the Sonny/Will/Leo story... I'm of two minds in this regard... On one hand I totally understand Will's reaction and it's a completely justified reaction. After what Leo has done to Sonny, why in the hell would Sonny what to have anything to do with him? It makes no rational sense and no matter how much the show wants to twist it around the idea of Sonny being friends with Leo is just plain stupid. Yeah, Sonny has always been a person who always tries to see the good in people...but c'mon...this is taking it to the extreme. I was glad when Will walked out on Sonny when Sonny decided it was more important to keep his promise to Leo over his husband's completely understandable request for Leo to leave. But on the other hand... How exactly is Will in the position at being upset over Sonny's new "friendship" with Leo when Will himself is friends with Ben Weston? I mean for all of Leo's flaws and reckless behavior it doesn't even come close to matching the level of violence Ben did to towards Will. And don't give me this crap "But oh Ben was sick." that still doesn't take away his actions and the emotional pain that came from it. And yet Will forgave him, was best man at his wedding and had a "tearful" goodbye scene when Ben left Salem and so on and so forth. I mean if Will can forgive Ben - which of course makes absolutely no sense - then Sonny should be able to forgive and be friends with Leo? Now that being said the idea of Sonny and Will having any type of relationship with Leo or Ben is just completely stupid. At this point I completely understand why the show wrote Wilson off. They have no idea what to write for this couple outside of dumb crap. Now that all being said let's take a moment to enjoy the yummiest that is Zack Tinker (Sonny)😍

I agree. I actually don't have a problem with the show exploring an openly relationship with Wilson. They're both hot, young, healthy men who are now embarking on a long distance relationship. Of course the love they have for one another isn't going to end but their physical sexual craving is not longer going to be satisfied as much as they would like to be. Which is something both men realize they're going to miss. I would love to see Wilson have a very open, honest and very frank conversation discussing the possibility at having an open relationship during the period in which they're apart. It's not as if this doesn't happen in relationships - it does. So why not explore this with Wilson? I would love for Paul to come back to town - I think Zack Tinker & Christopher Sean would have incredible chemistry. Sonny sees him and one thing leads to another and it isn't long before they are having a very open, hot torrid affair, an affair Will as totally aware of and gives his approval. In fact when Will comes home instead of pushing Paul out of the bed, Will joins them in a passionate threesome. If there was ever three characters who could realistically be involve in a long-term throuple relationship Will/Paul/Sonny is those three. My only issue is that I don't want Leo involve in the story. The character is a joke and the has a way at diminishing whatever storyline he's in. Not only because Leo is a caricature but in terms of character I can't see Sonny realistically allowing himself to become sexually involve with a man who framed him for sexual harassment and later on sexually assaulted him. Also superficially I don't find Greg Rikkart (Leo) to be sexually appealing enough to make me believe Zach Tinker's Sonny would be attract enough to sleep with Leo when he has Chandler Massey's Will as a husband. If Sonny is going to step out on his hot husband, then make sure the dude he steps with is equally hot! But then again this is the same show who turned a serial killer into a romantic male lead so what the hell do I know?- Daily Hotness

- Anne Heche hospitalized with severe burns from car accident
Anne Heche features prominently in this episode but the main reason why I'm posting it because it's a fabulously fun episode. It fun because the women in this episode is so wonderfully varied and diverse. Every one of them have their own individual voice. They can be witty, bitchy, insightful but more importantly each lady has her own since of intelligence. These are not stupid women. This was back in the day when strong dialogue and strong acting can make a pretty much throw-a-way episode very enjoyable to watch. I miss AW! - DAYS: October 2022 Discussion Thread ⌛
