  1. I've been watching so many episodes from '79 and the '80s lately that seeing this episode from the 90s is a bit jarring (I'd forgotten about Lyla and Cal) but many of the actors still have easy chemistry and the scenes have warmth despite the jarring pairings and we still have the roving camera shots that I like so much.

It's an interesting twist having Barbara be the one to try to keep it secret that she's had a baby with her sister's husband. I could see how some longtime fans might have rolled their eyes at the redundancy of the storyline and history repeating itself a generation later but given Barbara's history and personality, it kind of makes for an interesting twist and it fits.

Those outfits and some of those hairdon'ts, yikes! Barbara's outfit belongs on Voltron and as handsome as Rex Smith is, even he can't pull off that yuck-tastic sweater.

  2. I know that Tequan is still on GH (if it weren't for the occasional guest spot, would we really have proof?) so he's not a former soap star or anything, he's current but I wasn't sure where to put this:

    http://blogs.indiewire.com/shadowandact/2014-pan-african-film-fest-will-honor-emayatzy-corinealdi-tequan-richmond-w-rising-stars-awards

It makes me wonder how long will he remain on GH?

    And in other news:

I know that many weren't fans of the MORE AMC/OLTL shows but would that we could have one of those episodes this week! I bet the host would ask JLP about this one.

  3. Fascinating article NYT put out yesterday talking about the episode which was airing when JFK was shot. They mention that the full episode is at Paley (I didn't know that), talk about the scenes that didn't air, and interview Don Hastings, Eileen Fulton, and Rosemary Prinz.

Thanks for posting this. I wondered over the years how the actors found out (I guessed that they wouldn't have been told until the taping was wrapped up for the day) and how they reacted. Normally I wouldn't think too kindly of an actor ad-libbing in a script but it was kind of strange that there would be absolutely no acknowledgement of an event so big, especially on a show that had such a strong air of realism. I understand that you don't want to make the assassination the whole script but a tacit acknowledgement would've been acceptable, IMO.

I think posterity looks kindly on what Rosemary Prinz said.

  4. Diana Barton.

    Thanks DeeeDee.smile.png

Okay, I just looked at a picture of her from two years ago and she still looks pretty darn good. The bigger question to ask, I guess would be whether she could act? I don't remember her but I really am fuzzy on that who Blade storyline to begin with.

Is she a strong actress? If she isn't, I suspect she'd get clobbered by MS fans and stans if she took on a role like Phyllis then.

Being a soap fan, I know the dangers suggesting hair models.

Perhaps it's the subtle resemblance to Brenda Dixon in her youth.

  5. Looks like Debbi Morgan got an upcoming gig:

    http://blogs.indiewire.com/shadowandact/la-la-anthony-debbi-morgan-join-cast-of-starz-omari-hardwick-drama-power?utm_source=saDaily_newsletter&utm_medium=sailthru_newsletter

La La Anthony and Debbi Morgan have both joined the cast of Starz’s upcoming hour-long new drama series Power, which stars Omari Hardwick, is executive produced by Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson and created by Courtney Kemp Agboh (The Good Wife), who will serve as executive producer and showrunner.

As I mentioned in the PP thread, this subject matter is not really my thing and we all know how fickle the TV medium is but it's great that Debbi lined up another job. And cable also tends to be a bit more generous to cultivating shows these days than 'one and done' network TV, which cancels programs with a quickness.

  6. Has anyone seen a truly strange You Tube Channel where someone has posted clips of various ATWT stars wearing fur coats? I don't know what to make of this, except to say that I wish these were full episodes because some look as if they might be from episodes not uploaded to You Tube. It seems that that the person who runs the Channel is solely interested in the fur coats and not much else.

  7. I think the Dobson's are pretty good writers, but ATWT is a different show then GL was so their writing style didn't mesh with ATWT like it did with GL. I liked that P & G would switch up their writers, but they should have been more careful in switching writers to shows that would with the writers. I often wonder if the Dobson's should have been switched to Search for Tomorrow when the Corrington's had left to create Texas.

Back on topic, I think Marland ended up writing ATWT longer then he should have and I often think he should have been switched out in 1990/1991. Just not sure who could have written the show in his place if they had opted to switch him out.

What was the reason he only lasted two months or so at ATWT in late 1979?

Agree that Marland was burned out near the end of his tenure, I quit watching all together..he kept repeating himself and brought in all these characters far from the core...(who the hell was Aunt Mary and her Coffee house anyway???) He should have been training someone for two years to make way when he left and maybe consulted on ATWT for a year or two. I would have loved to see what a Pam Long with a strong producer could have done....or if they moved Nancy Curleee to be head writer.

I really agree with the sentiment that something was definitely missing with the cohesiveness of the writing in the last few years of his tenure. The storylines he wrote throughout the 80s were firing on all cylinders and I think 1986 was probably my favorite year that he wrote because it was one scintillating storyline and revelation after another.

I'd imagine that churning it out at that pace probably got pretty tiring after a number of years and burnout might be more than a possibility.

I also wonder whether failing health could have had much to do with the quality of the stories in the early 90s.

Also, by the end of the 1980s, it seemed as if there were more than a couple of popular actors that had left, many of whom had recently been in front burner storylines. It just seemed that by the early 1990s, there was more than a little bit of turnover.

I'm watching some of the '79 episodes and finding myself really getting caught up in the storylines. I've only heard about these storylines.

  8. I had seen that episode (I think it is broken down into scenes and shorter pieces) where Brian lights into Barbara for her suspected disruption of his wedding and he does mention Tom and Margo briefly, but I think it had mostly to do with Brian, through anger, admitting that he invested in her company out of guilt for dumping her and Barbara almost admitting that her actions stopped the wedding before trying to cover and amend her statement.

I haven't seen any episodes on You Tube where Tom or Margo discover that Barbara has been lying or even Barbara's (or Lisa's) reaction to the unveiling of the deception.

I also saw several clips in the aftermath of Sierra's discovery of Tonio's infidelity. I think I even saw one where it was revealed that Lucinda found out about Barbara and Tonio's affair but chose to keep quiet about it. I can't find any clips on You Tube where Barbara is confronted or the affair is actually revealed.

I was watching ATWT at the time, but I was so young that I can't remember 'whether I was watching those particular episodes and some of the subtext would've gone over my head, so I don't know how much I would've processed at the time anyway.

Too bad Soap Classics folded because I would have loved to see those episodes. I would've paid cash to buy/download those episodes. Those were some juicy storylines.

  9. From time to time, I love to watch classic clips and although I'm pretty familiar with what happened in 1986 (probably my favorite year), I'm a bit confused about one storyline and I hope someone here can clear this up for me:

I know that Barbara caused that rift between Tom and Margo, leading them to a separation and to near divorce by pretending to have slept with a passed out Tom but why did she do this? Was she angry with Tom? Or Margo?

Also, I don't remember how the truth came out of Barbara's actions. It had to have been revealed somehow. Does anyone remember?

Why are there no You Tube clips of Barbara getting caught in any of the numerous schemes she pulled that year? There were so many (Shannon & Brian's wedding debacle, the whole Duncan affair, the affair with Tonio Reyes while outfitting his naive wife Sierra).

Does anyone know if there are clips of Barbara getting caught? Because I've looked and can't see a darn thing.

  10. If that was a family portrait then that's kind of a sad one.

When Gaby Hoffman mentioned finding Anthony Herrera intimidating, I had this image of him giving her one of those hair raising looks similar to what James did when he was trying to extract a favor out of someone, a 5 year old could easily be intimidated by that expression.

Obviously, I don't know anyone of these people personally but when you think about the time she first remembers meeting him (1987), it was probably a pretty intense time for him as an actor. Not to make excuses for anyone not stepping up to fatherhood but sometimes actors have difficulty releasing themselves from an intense characterization. I don't know whether Herrera was Method, Meisner or whether his character in anyway resembled his personality off-screen but it may have been an intense time period.

Too bad they didn't try to meet later on in their lives (it doesn't sound like they ever did) because they might have been in different places and maybe ready for some sort of détente by then.

  11. Don't know where else to post this random thought but:

Anyone ever see that channel Bounce TV? It's one of those over the air channels that you can get with the cheapest of antennas but not by cable, but I digress.

Over the weekend there was this 70s movie (seemingly of the Blacksploitation variety) called The Monkey Hu$tle and a very young Debbie Morgan was in the movie and her onscreen Mom was played by Rosalind Cash.

Despite this, I can't say that I enjoyed the movie--okay what I paid actual attention to (I was doing like 3 other things simultaneously) but I found that the movie had almost as many unlikeable characters as the set of Y&R.

I admit I wasn't paying full attention and I didn't see the movie from the beginning but the likeable enough characters just didn't have much story and looting played too much of a part in story. Not to mention the hideous outfits.

  12. For those interested, you can watch many of the Unsung episodes on soultracks.com

Wow, thanks for this! I don't have cable and I got hooked on Unsung by watching episodes posted by some kind soul on You Tube but some disappeared.

I'm going to check out this site to see if I can try to catch up on what I've missed.

I'm going to try tvone.tv as well.

I often get lost in the soap threads so I'm so glad I wandered into this one.biggrin.png

    Thanks!smile.png

  13. Jasmine Guy's figure still looks fabulous though.

But they should definitely have Charnelle Brown on, if they do that reboot. The challenge is that ADW is supposed to be about the college experience, so there would probably be pressure to focus mostly on the students but I'm only interested in as much as they would integrate some of the classic cast with new characters.

But I was not as invested in Lena James and most of those characters as I was in the first and second year incoming students.

I wonder if Lisa Bonet and Marisa Tomei would ever do a cameo appearance? Not to stay, just an episode. It's always kind of cool that Tomei's character Maggie went to a (fictional) HBCU before it became a headline on Oprah.

  14. No one wants Cree Summer back?!

I've heard for months about this reboot possibility (was well as a possible reboot of Fame, which would only work if it were more like the original 1980 movie and not the TV show or the craptastic recent movie).

It's too bad that Jasmine Guy looks so, uhm, you know...these days because in theory, Whitley should return but Jasmine Guy looks a bit hard boiled these days (forgive me, I'm trying not to be critical of her looks).

On a positive note, though, I could see Victoria Rowell on this reboot, though.

  15. Derek was a "young" (on paper, anyway) man Jill met when she went to work at a beauty salon, or something. Jill fell in love with him. Katherine met him and soon fell in love with him herself, buying him his own salon, and reuniting him with his son. He loved Jill but grew to love Katherine, and of course her money. Jill moved on, while still having feelings for him. Meanwhile, his crazy ex Suzanne came to town and began poisoning Katherine, before having her committed. Katherine was presumed dead in a fire at the institution, and began gaslighting Suzanne, with the help of Liz Foster.

After this Derek left on his own, I'm not sure what his exit was.

Oh, so they were married? In the picture, Jeanne Cooper is identified as playing Katherine Thurston in the caption. Are those episodes on You Tube? I'd love to see those.
