When then-HW's Barbara Esensten and James Harmon Brown remarked in the GL anniversary book that what they emphasized in every story was what was at stake for the LOVERS - and not for the FAMILIES, which had always been GL's (and most other P&G soaps') bread-and-butter - I knew times had changed.

Prime example of this for me, Rick and Abby basically were raising Michelle because Ed was never around. If a new viewer was watching GL around that time, I wouldn't blame them if they thought that Michelle was their teen daughter and not his little sister.

Agree with everything you say about this, particularly the statement from MADD which would set Twitter on fire these days and most likely have gotten legitimate negative press. I particularly am annoyed that they dropped the ALS story to focus on..."the Clone"!  However, I do agree that having an ALS story with someone who was actually suffering from it would be problematic for production. The disease progresses differently from person to person in terms of its progression some faster then others, and some days are worse then others. It would difficult to plan a long term storyline and expect Zazz to be "on" every scene, the only alternative would be to film all his scenes in the matter of weeks to have in the can, but would you really want Zaz to film his own death? I watched a scene on You Tube off Rog visiting Van as she thought she was dying. Their conversation on Van's impending death sends shivers down your spine in light of what was going to happen and Zaz is visably suffering from ALS at this point, he is stiff, and is working very hard to speak..(it comes off well, as old nemises call a sort of truce at one's death bed, and Roger comes off as being more gentle with Van then he would, and Zaz can stil work those eyes but...its hard to watch) I agree that producing it would be hard, but how they handled NOT doing it, was all on them and terrible.

So, to rewrite two storylines, Roger leaving AND Amanda's paternity. Going back years I would have it that Bradon blackmailed Jennifer to sleep with him to punish Alan. She becomes preggers and does not know  who is the father and confides in Alex, who spirits her away to have the baby. Alex doesn't know that Brandon found Jennifer and sends his trusty secretary Bess Loweel to talk her and force her to put HIS name on the birth certificate and he would arrange for the baby to be adopted by a "good mother" Lucille Wexler (who was decidely NOT a good mother. Flash backs would show Bess browbeating a very pregnant Jennifer, who lives in a hovel, "We can make this all go away and you can have a life if you just agree to one small thing." At Brandon's death in Barbados Alex finds the birth certificate for the baby and a will that IF Amanda was indeed his daughter, all of Spaulding went to her, cutting out Alan and Alex to punish them both. The will is unsigned (as Brandon under the influence of Sharina, later had misgivings of his treatment of both Alan and Alex... so Alex destroys the document, as Alan thinks he is the father and Alan was presumed dead at that time anyway. Its Roger who investigating Bess' old documents, finds finds a copy of the document of the will, forges Bradon's signature and arranges false DNA tests to prove Amanda is Brandon. Once the reveal Alex still agrees to leave town but on the condition that Amanda remains Alan's daughter in public and Alex gives her share of Spaulding to Amanda, to avoid a long and lentghy court battle and bad publicity.

So Zaz last week would be his wedding to Amanda , but Alex returns stops the wedding at the cliche part of the ceremony and produces evidence that Rog was forging docs all over the place (she gets a signed confession from Bess on Bess's death bed)   Alex, being Alex, dramatically brings her own doc for the DNA test and the cops to arrest Roger, who runs.  Of course he runs to Holly and the last scenes are he and Holly discussing their history as Roger tries to convince her to pack up Meg and disappear with him forever. Holly almost goes, but remembering their inherit dysfunctions sends him on his way. Later, the fact that Holly helped Rog escape makes Fletch pack Meg up and leave.

This ending as convoluted as it is, at least fixes Amanda's parentage and give Roger a reason to not be on screen with no recast. It would also leave him open to returning if he could and would be a bit more respectful of the actor, the character and the fans.

Your idea of an exit story for Roger was fascinating to read and I would be here for it. Convoluted? Maybe but it is a soap opera after all and considering the circumstances of Zaslow's condition, it probably would have to be rushed since remember Roger's recast Dennis Parlato was on for under a year but it can be forgiven given the situation. The only issue, it will likely still lead to Holly's Nursery Rhyme Stalker mess which as someone who only watched on/off since the early 90s, I didn't buy Holly going down that path. Now that's a story I would also love to see disappear and replaced with something else.

As for the problematic situation of my idea, here's where I was coming from. I hate to bring her name up but I have to in this case. While JFP will be one of my least favorite EP's in daytime (even television), I have to begrudgingly give her props for bringing back Zaz as David Renaldi on OLTL who had an advanced form of ALS which required him to have a wheelchair like Stephen Hawking. I remember seeing those scenes when they first aired and I was in tears. I think because of the progression of his illness, Zaz wasn't on that long and of course died in 1998. From my understanding, there wasn't any malicious intent in brining back Zaz, except maybe a deservingly petty one towards MADD which if that's the case I also have to give JFP her props, again begrudgingly, or complaints of problematic conditions while he was David on OLTL. I could be entirely wrong and am willing to be educated on that on my end. They could have created a way for Zaz to not be as active have minimal dialogue and pretty much let Maureen Garrett, Liz Kiefer, and (I think) Frank Grillo to carry the story (of course, Maureen would have most of the weight.) I remember seeing Patrick Mulcahy on I think Twitter mention this idea so it wasn't mine to begin with. It always stuck with me the loss potential of this storyline and that the writer who Zaz thanked in his Emmy speech was willing to do it.

The treatment of Lisa and her portrayer Eileen Fulton on ATWT was awful. She put the show on the map in the 1960's. Also, Penny should have comeback for Nancy's memorial, and it should have been a multiple episode thing. We didn't need Katie and Juicy Janet and Liberty.

Making Nancy's passing mostly about Katie was a sin and a shame. I forgot if Julianne Moore was unavailable at that point but it would have been nice to have Frannie back for it instead of...whatever that was with Bob and Kim's anniversary.
I agree about Lisa, having her only react to Lucinda and John in the finale is a culmination of what went wrong with the show in the last roughly 15 years.

  4. You aren't treating @allmc2008 poorly, @Vee @Khan and @SFK. He has the need to be excessive and demand validation (speaking as a former friend of his.) I saw multiple posts of his on a Facebook group I am apart of which I know he's going to screen cap whatever makes him look good. While the Lily Montgomery comment was uncalled for and can be considered ablism @SFK, I understand that it had to get to that point because he crosses boundaries. He has posted many times on the Facebook group about how stupid people are when it comes to soap history sharing screencaps from this board. I wouldn't be posting here (reviving an old account) if this hasn't gotten on my last nerve. @allmc2008 bribing people for an apology is not going to make you friends with people whom you already burned bridges with. If you are going to share the Y&R post, share it. If not, don't dangle it around demanding that we all bow down to you every whim.

  5. I am watching early PC (I am in September '97) I am seeing why Danielle and Jake didn't last long. The story could have been interesting if the acting wasn't blah. Don't get me wrong Renee Allman (Griffin?) and Rib Hillis are beautiful creatures that would have done an amazing job as replacements of Billy Warlock and Erika Eleniak on Baywatch.
It seemed like Rex and Danielle had a very weird relationship like Danielle was a sugar baby to Rex. I will keep watching to see if it will click with me. I also find it strange that I find the character who was supposed to be an actor a terrible actor.

The only thing that saves it is Lynn Herring, Jon Lindstrom, and Kin Shriner. I find Wayne Northrop wasted in this story (Rex reminds me of Sideshow Bob especially when he starts playing that damn classical music.)

    Everything else I really love.

Also, Audrey appears like 2 times since the premiere.

What season did Chuck Pratt join?

I want to say season 2. I am almost at that season. I know Darren didn't want to spin off Models INC and Chuck took it on like a champ (I only like Chuck on Primetime soaps.) I am guessing season 2 or 3.

It was a shame that the last few years the show dropped any attempt at being a soap.  The introduction of Pretty would have been handled differently had she been introduced in the earlier years vs the later years.  Im still amazed Paloma was a pretty interesting character..the complete opposite of her sister Theresa...considering she was introduced in the later years as well.

Paloma from what I heard was eventually recast and the life got drained from her. I don't think Paloma #2 ever appeared on the NBC version.

I LOVED the Travis character and wish they'd bring him back.  He came the closest to filling the "Brad Carlton" void of any character introduced since.

I didn't like when scenes were spent on Travis and his boss who he had sex with but I did like the character. Heck! I loved Stitch who was pretty much the same type of character in the beginning until he was paired with Abby and had a demon seed child.

Omigosh! I remember these promos. Fascinating People...Fascinating Lives..

And David Canary? Sheer genius. For the first six months I watched the show, I actually believed twins were playing the role. After all, they showed him as both Adam and Stuart in the opening pictures...

She was Laurie, and she was awful, and I can't believe how she has broken out. That whole teen scene, with Ridings as JR, and Amanda Seyfried (who I also can't believe broke out, but has grown in her abilities) was such a snore.  Remember the cyber messaging crap?

However, this was very sweet regarding being starstruck by Kelly.

Yeah I remember that crap. I remembered I turned to Passions (which aired opposite of AMC in my area) when that scene happened. HAHA!

  10. Hello. I want to know if Travis from Y&R counts as a character that didn't get a proper send off. He pretty much went from sending flowers to Victoria one day and when she told him "Leave me alone" he walked away. The next day, Sally took over and Victoria was talking about wanting to be an independent woman or some crap to Victor and Nikki. I think it was mentioned that he left town but his send off to me wasn't proper he just walked away.

Also Nick and Jackie Marone on B&B. It bothered me when Hope became front and center that they didn't acknowledge Nick at all.

Does it count when the actor left or got fired and they mention it later? Because I know a few from B&B that should be mentioned.

  11. I started with season 2 on Netflix. I forgot how much I loved it from watching it on Style a few years back. It definatly had a soap opera feel to it. With the cliffhangers at the end of the episode. I think once Darren Starr and some of the tennants from 2-4 left it went downhill.

  12. My litteral first exposure to AMC was in 1990 when Billy Clyde died and Tad got amnesia. Is that clip/storyline on youtube? I know like 15 years ago, I found an old tape that had Billy Clyde kidnapping Dixie (from October 1990.) It involved a phone booth. The tape got taped over :'(

  13. Anybody know where americans can see episodes of the Hollyoaks? This show always interested me. A soap with young people on it that actually is successful. That was every american soap opera writer and EP's dream in the 2000's. I love the current opening package. I think it's more creative and put together than the rock version (which i thought was very trashy.)

  14. I am curious about one thing (I apologize if this was discussed before.) I was born 6 years after the show ended and only seen the credits and read about the show on wikipedia.

Was the prison rape storyline that happened with the character that Christopher Reeve formerly played a first and that's why the fans didn't take the storyline well? Or was it so horribly written/acted that it wasn't believable. I ask because Michael's prison rape story on GH seemed to be met with a nonchalant response about the content (unless i am missing something) and good acting overall by the people involved.

  15. It's sometimes surprising to me that Kirk did manage to stay on the show for ten years leaving in a completely different spot than he came on in. I think Kirk was ruined for me when he knowingly let Lily and Margo take the fall for Diego's murder when he did it himself.

Never knew about the Alexander/Wiggin affair or that Sherri Alexander was Michael Crichton's widow. Wiggin was on GL a year after he left ATWT as a farmer involved with Holly and Annie.

ATWT's final year brought out a scandalous affair between Austin Peck and Terri Colombino allegedly resulting in Peck's firing. Also I remember Hunt Block and Cady McClain were involved at some point.

I am pretty sure they are now married. The time between the engagement and the marriage was a sneeze and you miss it. She didn't take his last name professionally (she is still credited on OLTL as Terri Conn.) Though with a last name like Peck, I could see why. It's like having a fat person with the last name of Fit.

Also I noticed the show had a huge number of 3 named actresses at one point. Kelley Menigan Hensely, Colleen Zenk Pinter, Alyson Rice Taylor I know there were others. But I remember looking at the cast list and there were a bunch of 3 named actresses.
