But that's just music evolution.  As they get older, they start to fade and become "irrelevant" (especially on the charts, the hot 100),  We can't expect them to continue to be big.  As a fan, all I want is for them to make music that I'll enjoy.    If they don't, then we still have those old albums to listen to - I still have about 20 Britney songs on my phone.

Agreed. ESP the bit in bold. I don't really care where Britney gets to in the chart now. The only reason I'd like her to do well in the charts is so she continues to make music. I'd love her to record some trance music. I loved it when she was influenced by dubstep and started trying out new things during the Blackout era.

  2. The media and public have always condemned Madonna. But Madonna didn't let that stop her. She's easily without doubt the best female artist the music scene has ever produced.

It's sad she was never really able to regain her 99-04 spark again.

I suppose in terms of her dancing and stage presence, that was her peak, but I think the peak of her artistic expression really lies in both In the Zone and Blackout. In the Zone isn't personally one of my favourites but that's more down to my personal taste in that I prefer electronic music so Blackout to Britney Jean was bound to appeal more to me, but I can see why ITZ would have so much appeal.

Even before her recent troubles, her career has been on a downward trajectory - these last two albums were huge flops

I wouldn't say Glory was a flop. Britney Jean probably was, which I think is a shame as i love that album. But her contract with the residency prevented her from promoting it much. I think it was the promotional strategy rather than the material that was the problem. I like BJ more than Glory, I think that's because Glory lacks the club/dance tracks I like from Britney.

She's so irrelevant to the current pop scene that she may never be able to make a significant mark on it again, especially as she pushes 40.

Not many people do in pop though, really. Especially as present culture is much more ageist than when say Madonna was around. I think Britney's had a good run though. I think her conservatorship stifles any passion she has for music.

Though, I guess other than Beyonce, no one from her generation of pop has really been able to sustain a career with much momentum.

Yeah, I can't think of any Beyonce tracks since Drunk in Love which were that big. But I'm not a fan, I don't follow her. Her Lion King album flopped though.

I forget about P!nk all the time, because well, all of her music since M!zundastood and Try This has been so damn forgettable.

It works for her because she still has a strong following, but after M!zundastood (still her best album, IMO) and after Try This sold disappointingly, she gave up trying to bring anything new to the table and has played it safe and catered to soccer moms ever since. It's a shame, because had potential to be so much more, especially after she flipped the script from her first album and into M!zundastood.

THIS. I feel like P!nk is so damn boring. She had so much life and energy in her early albums. It like she got scared of getting old and decided to conform to age norms just releasing bland ballads in order to stay relevant. Her material is so cringeworthy.

Do you guys listen to Dua Lipa?  Whenever I hear her songs, I keep thinking, "this is what Gaga should be doing."  She's doing a lot of dance/pop.  "Physical" is phenomenal and I know it's already going to be in my top 10 songs of 2020.

Yeah I like Dua. I find her new stuff a bit dated but I love some of her old stuff like New Rules. Her new album is out now, I need to check it out. Have you heard it and if so, is it good?

She's gone on to slightly disown the 'ArtFlop' I mean Artpop album, going as far as saying she doesn't remember recording it. Her team's terrible marketing campaign for that album really wrecked it.

To be honest I tend not to focus on campaigns or the commercialism of the artists, if we go by that then her Bad Romance era was her best (or whatever the album was called, Fame Monster?) but to be honest I way prefer Artpop over that (in fact it's my favourite album of hers) because I couldn't get on board with the meat dress and all the other stupid stuff she was doing during that era. I mean she's always been bad with the OTT stuff but artistically I preferred her during Artpop. I've never really liked her much as a person. Sticking a telephone on your head and calling it a hat isn't art. But yeah, I do like her music.

Joanne was her lowest I think.

Well, the ASIB soundtrack put some momentum back into her career, but looks like she's intent on squandering any momentum in her career (once again) with such dated and uninspired crap.

True, but Applause wasn't the most inspiring lead single but Artpop ended up being a great album. Also, pop/dance is really what she should be doing instead of going the boring P!nk route of releasing ballads because she thinks she has to; so on the plus side I'm glad she's gone back to that style. I just hope whatever comes is better than Stupid Love. It's bound to be though, I mean she hasn't set the bar very high :D

I'm not a fan of "Stupid Love" either.  :(   I'm surprised it's a Max Martin co-production.  Hope the rest of the album is good though.

From the sound of interviews she got bored of trying so hard and just went with whatever came out. I think she dropped the ball on quality control. But I'm sure there's bound to be better stuff on the album.

  8. I think she has a flawless discography and run of singles. I made a list earlier of my top 5 favourite singles by her:

    1 - It Ain't Me (with Kygo)
2 - Lose You to Love Me
3 - The Heart Wants What it Wants
4 - Look at Her Now
5 - I Want You to Know (with Zedd)

But I also love Naturally, A Year Without Rain, Love You Like a Love Song, Come and Get It, Slow Down, Good For You, Same Old Love, Kill Em With Kindness, Wolves, Fetish, Back to You, Rare and Dance Again. Also a lot of her album tracks.

She's a modern day Britney IMO.

My three  favourite songs are "Cologne," "Sober" and "Nobody."  I also like "Lose You To Love Me."

I really like Nobody too. The other album tracks I like are Survivors, Revival, Love Will Remember and Nobody Does it Like You. Forget Forever is pretty good too. Oh and from her new album 'People You Know' and 'Vulnerable' are great, check them out if you haven't heard them!

  9. I've loved reading back on this thread. All the comments since 2008, fascinating to read. For me Britney's best era is Blackout through to Britney Jean. Glory was a bit disappointing. I agree that Blackout is her best album. I'm not fussed by the Baby album at all, nor Oops bar a couple of songs.

    What is that movie?

I've watched most of the Psycho movies recently. Psycho, Psycho II, Psycho III. I'm yet to re-watch Psycho IV though. I don't like the Psycho remake though.
