  1. For whatever reason, aside from the Bert/Bill marital tumults, most of what I've read of the show in the 50s and 60s doesn't jump out at me, although the clips posted of Gillian Spencer's Robin, I devoured.

I've always found the 40s and 50s of GL the most interesting, being that it had Meta as the main heroine, with her marriage to Ted White, her shooting of him, and her eventual marriage to Joe Roberts with the interference of Joe's daughter.

  2. Isn't that Kathy Glass (MJ)?

It could be Paul, I only assumed it might be Sara since she was also heavily involved in the Nola pregnancy storyline. Didn't know Katherine Glass was a brunette.

Thanks for finding this. I have seen so little of Kathleen Turner's soap work. She seems very cold here -- then again perhaps Nola was supposed to always be cold. When exactly was she written out?

I don't care for the announcer or that tinny music.

Yeah I don't care for the music too, it's too erratic and doesn't fit the mood of the promo IMO.

It's from my understanding Carl, that the character of Nola Dancy didn't mellow out or for better words, become sympathetic, until Zimmer entered the role. When Zimmer played Nola she became more rootable when Mona tried to portray Nola as a unfit parent and take away baby Jessica. Turner's Nola schemed to get her unborn baby the Aldrich birthright and tried to trick Mona into believing the baby was Jason's(which eventually it did turnout to be, despite Nola's one night stand with Colin).

  3. A promo from 1979 promoting the Nola pregnancy debacle! It features Jada Rowland and Kathleen Turner in it, I'm not sure who the third actress is at the start of the promo, I'm guessing it's the actress who played Sara Dancy?

  4. I hope the article I typed up helped you some then. I'd like to know more about him too. I would say he seems ahead of his time, but considering most of the producers in daytime haven't been great, perhaps not. I do wonder how he might have been on, say, SFT in the early 80s, if he could have turned them around. All of his shows seem to have a very unique character.

What unique stories did he do at The Doctors?

From the synopsis’s I’ve read and still have from his time at TD from 78-79, The Doctors seemingly tackled more social issues, or at least more sexual oriented stories, under Weiss than under anybody else in the show’s history. It was under him that the show had teenagers Billy and Greta deal with their sexual desires, and experience the repercussions of it, such as her becoming pregnant. Elsewhere you had good girl Sara Dancy torn between town baddie Dr. Colin Wakefield and the noble Mike Powers. The story would conclude after a rage filled Mike took to Sara to bed, and funneled his frustrations into their love making. Sara, having never seen such a side of Mike before, would express to her sister Nola that Mike’s anger had improved their love making and she now valued her marriage to him more than before.

There were more stories like this, such as the plot where Billy and Greta attended a swinging party and felt out of place, Carolee dealing with her rape and the emotional and physical affects it had on her marriage with Steve, hints that a character named Kim had a “Sex addiction”, and finally the Luke/Missy romance where Missy was hesitant to have sex with reformed womanizer Luke Dancy, after a traumatic experience.

Perhaps unique isn’t quite the word for it, for a better word the stories were more racy, being that they pushed the envelope for its time period and gave an entirely new layer to the canvas of characters.

  5. I posted this in the Secret Storm thread, but it's a 10/71 TV Dawn to Dusk interview with Chuck Weiss, who produced SS and WTHI at this time. He talks a bit about the sequence where Vicki pushed Mary Hathaway down the stairs.

Chuck Weiss is a producer that I'm eagerly wanting to learn more about. Not only did he produce WTHI and SS, but if I'm correct he also was EP of How to Survive a Marriage for some time, another soap that pushed the envelope in the 70s. Not only did he produce that soap, he would later be transplanted over at The Doctors, where the soap engaged in some unique storytelling around that time as well. Seems as if it was a signature of Weiss's to display storylines, that were often seen as taboo in the 70s, on the front burner. Unfortunately for him, such storylines didn't really garner much ratings at the time, nor did it help him retain his the position of EP for very long.

  6. Thanks again Paul for the synopsis, if you have any more information that you can contribute to the thread I'd appreciate it very much. The more I learn, the more I seem to formulate more questions about the defunct soap lol.

  7. The reviews did not let me down with this show, I was expecting an amazing show, and I got one. Definitely will be tuning in not only for the next episode, but the entire season it seems. Kudos to the cast and crew.

AMC is becoming quite the force to be reckoned with dramas.

  8. Before tonights episode Jeremy oozed the boy next door type sex appeal, but after tonight, I kind of sensed that they were trying to shed that "emo" type of persona Jeremy had at the start of the series, and were trying to mature the character a bit into an adult. Well it worked for me :)

I'm so torn when it comes to couples on this show. Yea, Tyler and Jeremy would be off the charts, but I think Caroline/Tyler and Jeremy/Bonnie could be equally explosive as well.

  9. Ah yes, Glenda and Carol, I think I might like this friendship.

Psh, Jay is too boring to be potentially paired with Lauren, unless her self-destructive tendencies leads to him being killed off, then I would be all for such a pairing.

I love how there is a gathering amongst the characters almost every week; there's always some reason for most of the cast to interact. It makes the show more light and gives it much more heart. I don't see how anyone could label EE depressing or dark, I think it's well balanced between the dark and humor.

A sign that Stacey is returning to her old self: mentioning the fact that she bought new shoes when Alfie stated that the opening of the Vic was to be delayed. I'm going to miss Lacey Turner.

Bianca as a character has matured quite a bit, that is something I like. As a viewer who's not familiar with the Bianca/Ricky pairing, I don't get why they're such a big deal. (Caught a glimpse of their return promo from 2009.) Bianca I like, Ricky seems like an brain dead tool to me, who's only reason for existing on the canvas is to remind us viewers that Janine is a living breathing human being.

  10. Today's episode was gripping from start to end. With the exception of the Slaters and the Golds, just about everyone was gripping with the death of someone close to them, be it Bradley or Billie.

Lindsey Coulson was simply brilliant today, it will be a crime if she does not receive an award of sorts for her scenes dealing with Billie's death.

I have to add though, Jake Wood has also been spot on as Max, playing a father still grieving for his son after all these months. I could really feel his pain and conflict in Max's scenes today.

I'm interested in seeing how Lauren's self-destructing nature emerges in the future, and how that persona, along with Abby's clingy/obsessiveness, gives the Branning's headaches for years to come.

The Dot and Jim scene was both eerie and a well written touch to today's episode.

  11. I try to watch the show as much as I can, when I don't have school.

I like Joy and Whoopi mostly, followed by Sherri. Sherri sometimes I really enjoy and sometimes I find her useless on the show. Depends on the day. I think sometimes when things get really heated on the show, Sherri's feisty side can be quite entertaining and she can shed light on a side of an issue that I can agree with.

  12. According to his Twitter, Daniel Brocklebank is joining the show. According to Sharon Marshall, he's invovled in Billy's storyline and could be his long-lost son, or a friend of Billy's long lost son or something.

    http://twitter.com/Dan_Brocklebank/status/27766173578

Oddly, I had hoped Billy's son would turn out to be Tanya's new man, Greg, thus putting that character to use and not bringing on anymore new characters.

  13. Watching the 10/21 episode where the men of Bay City meet to discuss Carl. From the past few episodes I've seen with him, what's the story with Lucas? He gives off that shady/anti-hero type of vibe. Was a he a mobster of sorts?

I've always wanted to hear people's opinion on Lucas's murder, and the whodunnit that followed. I remember years ago, when I used to purchase SOD, they'd have those recaps of AW from years ago, and I read some of the recaps from the story.

  14. I've watched the majority of episodes from the 25th Anniversary, and by far it's the most thought through and one of the best written anniversaries I've ever watched for a soap in my short young life. The anniversaries for soaps these days don't even come close, not even by a mile, to how well written and wonderfully plotted it was. Even in Douglas Watson's absence, it still counts as one of the best I've ever watched for a soap. Some soaps bring characters back, just for the face time alone, without giving them any meaningful words or lines, but after watching this particular group of clips I can really tell that the writers really put the effort in to weave the past in with the present, and pay tribute to past characters by using them to progress the stories playing out on AW at the time. All I have to say is bravo, I didn't quite get the hype of Swajeski's time on AW until after I watched those episodes.

  15. The show got over 9 million last night.

It sounds like the story with Carol and Billie's death is going to be very tough stuff. Apparently Carol is going to rage at Jim for being a racist and then forbid Jim, Max, and Jack from attending the funeral, saying they are all racists.

Wow that sounds like some truly intense stuff.

  16. Shirley and Kat meet on Thursday. I hear they eventually become friends of some sort.

    <object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Z-4Yn6sY7M?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US"></param><param'>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Z-4Yn6sY7M?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Z-4Yn6sY7M?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>

I do hope we get to see other facets of Kat. EastEnders always seems to have female characters yelling and getting into arguments with everyone when they return, like they did with Bianca previously.

 I'm loving the humor on the show these days, they do it quite effortlessly.
