ARTICLE: Dan O’Connor Joins ‘Days of our Lives’ Writing Team
UPDATE: As first reported by Soap Opera Network on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, Dan O’Connor has joined the writing team of “Days of our Lives” as a scriptwriter. “I’ve been very fortunate that I joined the team at ‘Days of our Lives,’” O’Connor said to Soap Opera Network, fresh off the stage from winning his first-ever Daytime Emmy Award for his previous work as co-head writer at “General Hospital," working alongside Chris Van Etten. “I’m very excited to be a member of that team, and just happy to still be in this genre that I love so much,” continued O’Connor,” who noted, “I get to work with Ron [Carlivati, head writer], I get to work with Katie [Schock] and Jamey [Giddens]... I’m very, very excited.” Although O'Connor began working on the show in early May, a representative for the show confirms that his first scripts will not air until the end of January 2025. NATAS In 2019, O'Connor was named co-head writer of "General Hospital" following the retirement of former co-head writer Shelly Altman. He began his career interning for “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” and Marvel Comics and later worked as a writers’ assistant on “One Life to Live." While at the ABC soap, O’Connor worked with Carlivati before the latter transitioned to become head writer at "General Hospital" in 2012. O'Connor joined the "One Life to Live" writing staff during the show's final season and wrote the series finale episode. The Daytime Emmy win for "General Hospital" marked the first time the series has taken home the coveted statue for Outstanding Writing Team for a Daytime Drama Series in 15 years (since 2009). You can check out Soap Opera Network’s interview with Dan O’Connor below. In January, it was announced that O’Connor and Van Etten were being replaced by new co-head writers Elizabeth Korte and Patrick Mulcahey. Last month, Mulcahey suddenly exited "General Hospital," leaving Korte to become the show’s sole head writer. This marks the first time since at least 2015 that only one writer would oversee storylines for the ABC daytime drama series. The timing of Mulcahey’s exit came just as Van Etten returned to the writing team as a breakdown writer/scriptwriter. Editor's Note: An earlier version of this article did not have information on when scripts written by O’Connor for “Days of our Lives” would first stream on Peacock. The article has been updated to reflect O'Connor's first scripts will air at the end of January 2025. - ARTICLE: Daytime Broadcast Ratings For The Week of May 27-31, 2024
More on The View vs. The Talk: Among demo viewers (more important than the rating by itself), during the week of May 27-31, 2024, The View had 124,000 viewers among Women 18-49, while The Talk had just 108,000. Both shows beat GMA3 and NBC News Daily and generally round out the bottom half of the 13 daytime broadcast shows. Meanwhile, in Women 25-54 viewers, The View had 163,000 viewers in the demo to The Talk with 162,000 viewers. Again, The Talk was canceled but costs a hell of a lot less than The View does in terms of talent cost.- ARTICLE: Daytime Broadcast Ratings For The Week of May 27-31, 2024
If that happens, especially in this day and age, I totally agree! As long as GH can get back into the game against its soap opera competition, it'll be fine. In fact, in a bit of irony, the only way CBS/Sony would force changes at Y&R would be if GH becomes competitive again. Otherwise, only a successful launch for The Gates will force any substantial changes among the three remaining soaps.- ARTICLE: Daytime Broadcast Ratings For The Week of May 27-31, 2024
I forgot to add my point...haha. That said, I don't believe Frank's job is in danger per se, but he's been there for over 12 years now. Someone will have to become the fall guy for the rating collapse, and one can't just blame the writers. Three writing regime changes in six months -- with a fourth likely to be announced shortly. That's an obvious problem. I do think the show will see 65, but the people running it today aren't likely to be running it then. IMO.- ARTICLE: Daytime Broadcast Ratings For The Week of May 27-31, 2024
I can't tell you that. Of all the EPs, Frank is still the best at his job. The show is visually appealing, actually goes outside on occasion, and has a wide variety of sets. People have houses. Cast members interact with each other and aren't isolated. Half the cast isn't obviously on vacation, which is why they are missing for months on end, although some could use one. In terms of running the show, Frank is the best of the best. I'm being very honest here. Even when soaps did better in the 90s and early 2000s, we never had such a visually appealing show. Now, that's my opinion, and I'm not including lighting in my thinking on the matter (GH could be lit better).- ARTICLE: Daytime Broadcast Ratings For The Week of May 27-31, 2024
Honestly, the show would have to undergo some further behind-the-scenes changes, at least before ABC cancels. Not just of the writing variety. And they will want to see how the show does against soap opera competition with The Gates coming aboard. Meanwhile, The View needs some attention. Although its total viewers are fine and the ladies talking about politics make headlines, the show's demos are just falling apart. I expect things will be status quo leading to the election, but I won't be surprised to see some on-camera changes at some point thereafter in line with what they did in the early 2010s when ratings started to fall to levels that saw The Talk beating it on occasion. In fact, in unrounded Women 18-49 and Women 25-54, The Talk is nipping at The View, with nearly half the total viewers. CBS still canceled The Talk, which makes you wonder if ABC would be willing to live with numbers like this if CBS wasn't. That said, streaming is all the talk when excusing rating declines, but with continued price increases, are people just watching shows on streaming or just tuning out overall? What does it truly mean to be a "Top 10" show on streaming? We still don't know. Only Netflix gives out any info that matters.- ARTICLE: Daytime Broadcast Ratings For The Week of May 27-31, 2024
Despite the Memorial Day holiday, during which most shows were coded as specials and are therefore not factored into the weekly averages except for “The Price is Right” (3.666 million / 4.246 million), the week of May 27-31, 2024 was not a good one for daytime broadcast. Currently in its 15th season, “Let’s Make a Deal” (1.923 million / 2.293 million) hit a series low among Total Viewers, with the first half-hour falling below two million viewers for the first time and the second half-hour attracting numbers in line with what the first half-hour had been averaging for most of the season. Both half-hours had the biggest week-to-week decline among Total Viewers, losing -100,000 viewers and -92,000 viewers, respectively. Compared to the same week last year, the second half-hour was down -315,000 viewers and the first half-hour was down -292,000 viewers. “The Young and the Restless” (2.975 million) hit a new season low among Total Viewers and saw the biggest year-to-year decline overall, dropping -333,000 viewers compared to the same week last year. “General Hospital” (1.853 million) once again averaged less than two million viewers, marking the seventh consecutive week the show has done so and the 13th time this season. Additionally, the series hit a new season low among Total Viewers, tied its series low among unrounded Women 18-49 (0.18 rating) and tied its series low among unrounded Women 25-54 (0.31 rating). For the ninth time this season (not including ties), “The View” (2.259 million) beat its network sibling among unrounded Women 18-49 (0.19 rating for “The View” vs. 0.18 rating for “General Hospital”). Speaking of “The View,” the daytime talk show was one of only three shows to see year-to-year growth among Total Viewers, adding +55,000 viewers compared to the same week last year. The other two shows seeing year-over-year growth were “The Talk”* (1.218 million; +14,000 viewers) and “NBC News Daily” (1.110 million; +111,000 viewers). What follows is a breakdown of how the daytime broadcast shows performed during the week of May 27-31, 2024 in Women 18-49, Women 25-54, Households and Total Viewers, including a look at their performance during the comparable week last year. A closer look at the daytime soaps, including their daily performance breakdown in the demos, will be posted shortly. In an Instagram post on Wednesday, Anita Joy, the female co-worker who was being walked to her car by Johnny Wactor as the former “General Hospital” star came upon thieves attempting to steal the catalytic converter from his truck, has opened up about the events leading up to and following the tragic death of the beloved actor. Joy and Wactor worked the bartending shift Friday night at the Level 8 bar in downtown Los Angeles. “I’ve needed to take some time to collect myself and my thoughts. I was with Johnny in his last moments and I’m here to be his voice after such unimaginable events,” said Joy, who shared several photos of Wactor working alongside his colleagues, and what may be the final media record of him before he died during the early morning hours on Saturday, May 25. “I’ve needed a few days to collect myself before saying anything here, but I need to share his story, the support for his family and the incredible loss that a lot of us are feeling. I have started and stopped so many times with what I want to say, writing over the details of everything, then ending it all together because it’s just too much,” wrote Joy in a text image published within the thread. “There has been a lot within myself of ‘what to and what not to” share about this – but the reality is, I have a responsibility to Johnny. I am his voice now because otherwise he would have possibly been alone and he wasn’t. He was killed senselessly by a coward who reacted without care of the gorgeous life he was taking. So I’m angry, I’m sad and I’m all of the feeling at once…but above all, I am here for Johnny’s justice. “My friend of 8 years went from laughing together, working side by side, leaving our bartending shift and walking to our cars, to him dying in my arms in the streets of DTLA in the dark hours of 3am,” Joy continued in a separate text image within the thread. “There are plenty of articles out now with the basic details of this horrific story which comes down to a few criminals trying to steal a car part and all they took was my friend’s life. Everything happened in an instant, I’ve come to describe it as a glass water that gets tipped over and you’re scrambling to grab it and save it from spilling out completely but it just runs through your fingertips and is gone.” “We cautiously approached the men, questioning what they were doing, at first thinking the car was being towed. We were no threat and Johnny kept his cool as he always did, simply stating that it was his car and for them to leave. Hands open to his sides in peace,” Joy said, describing the details leading up to the shooting. “Johnny was between me and the man who shot him – as I heard the shot ring into the night, he forcefully tumbled back into my arms and as I grabbed for him, I shouted ‘Hunny you ok?!’ And he only responded ‘Nope! Shot!’ We toppled onto the street where I pushed my legs under him and tried to hold his body up while screaming for help and screaming at him to stay with me.” Continuing to describe the situation as it happened in the text thread, Joy said, “One of our security guards from work was crossing the street shortly after and ran to us with 911 on the phone – we tied my denim jacket around him to stop the bleeding and Bryan proceeded to try CPR on him.” She added, “I’m so thankful for Bryan showing up, trying with all his might to save Johnny. It was too close range, too extreme of a wound for him to survive it but my god, he fought to stay. I am utterly heartbroken and so very angry. My only peace is that I was with him and this didn’t happen to him alone – my only other peace will be seeing these awful men brought to justice.” In the caption of her Instagram post, Joy wrote of Wactor: In addition to sharing details of Wactor’s final moments, Joy pointed out that the Level 8 bar had previously promised to provide some form of parking for their staff, particularly those working the late shift. She also asked for the bar to contribute in some way to Wactor’s family, and to honor and respect him for “all the hard work and effort he did for them.” She closed out her post saying, “My heart is shattered with his loss but I believe l have gained the best guardian Angel out there. I love you Johnny Wacky.” For anyone hoping to contribute to the GoFundMe created by Wactor’s godmother, Michaelle Kinard, to support Johnny’s family, click here. The MGM+ original drama series “Godfather of Harlem” has cast “The Bold and the Beautiful” and “How to Get Away with Murder” actor Rome Flynn as a recurring guest star during the show’s upcoming fourth season. Flynn will portray Frank Lucas, a country boy from North Carolina who ventures to Harlem and, after initial friction with gangster Bumpy Johnson (Forest Whitaker), eventually rises to become Bumpy’s fiercest defender and right-hand man. Academy Award winner Denzel Washington first portrayed Frank Lucas in the 2007 film “American Gangster,” which is loosely based on the criminal background of the real-life gangster who operated a drug empire in New York City during the late 1960s and early 1970s. In the TV series, the character’s story will begin ten years earlier than in the film. “When I saw Rome’s audition, I immediately knew we’d found our man – equal parts charming and ruthless, savvy and suave. Rome is a wonderful actor who can go toe-to-toe with Forest Whitaker and our other great performers,” said executive producer Chris Brancato of casting Flynn in the role. “I’m filled with gratitude! Thrilled to be a part of the Godfather of Harlem universe and breathe new life into the legend of Frank Lucas,” said Flynn. “I have so much admiration for Forest Whitaker. Working opposite of him, being led by the brilliant creator Chris Brancato, is truly a gift. An actor’s dream.” In Season 4, Bumpy Johnson (Whitaker) continues his bloody war for control of Harlem against New York’s Mafia families while contending with the emergence of a potential rival in newly arrived Black gangster Frank Lucas (Flynn). After Malcolm X’s (Jason Alan Carvell) tragic death, Bumpy must also grapple with his daughter Elise’s (Antoinette Crowe-Legacy) involvement with the Black Panthers. Recently completing a six-episode arc on “Chicago Fire,” Flynn’s credits also include roles in such shows as “Grey’s Anatomy,” “With Love” and “Raising Dion,” among others. In 2018, Flynn won a Daytime Emmy Award for his portrayal of Zende Forrester on “The Bold and the Beautiful.” In addition to Flynn, “Godfather of Haarlem” will see the returns of actors Ilfenesh Hadera, Lucy Fry, Antoinette Crowe-Legacy and Erik LaRay Harvey, among others. The first three seasons are available to stream on MGM+. ABC Signature produces the series, which is executive produced by Chris Brancato, Paul Eckstein, Forest Whitaker, Nina Yang Bongiovi, James Acheson, Markuann Smith and Ray Quinlan. Michael Panes and Stephen Schiff serve as writing executive producers, and Swizz Beatz serves as executive music producer. Flynn is represented by Greene Talent, Weiner Management, imPRint, and Meyer & Downs. A GoFundMe has been created to help support the family of Johnny Wactor, the former “General Hospital” actor who was fatally shot early Saturday morning after he encountered three unidentified individuals attempting to steal the catalytic converter from his truck. “I want to raise money for his mother, Scarlett, and his brothers, Lance and Grant to be able to travel the distance of 2000 miles (the many times it may take) to take care of this heartbreaking business which they have been sentenced,” said Michaelle Kinard, Wactor’s godmother and the fundraiser’s organizer on the page, which is seeking to raise $100,000 towards reaching that goal. Scarlett Wactor, Johnny’s mother, posted on Instagram that she and the Wactor family approved the page. At press time, just over $60,000 had been raised since the page was created on Monday. “Any excess donations will be donated to the charities the family chooses in memory of Johnny,” noted Kinard on the page. It reminds me of Loving/The City, though.- ARTICLE: Full Episodes Of ‘Hollyoaks’ Available To Stream In The U.S.
For the first time since November 2023, full episodes of the British soap opera “Hollyoaks” are available to stream in the United States. Several recent episodes, beginning with an episode aired on Monday, May 6, were uploaded to the show’s official YouTube channel on Monday, May 27. Going forward, episodes will be released with a one-week delay, similar to the show’s release schedule in the United Kingdom. This follows Channel 4’s decision last fall to transition the soap into a digital-first daily serial with episodes available to stream one day before premiering on E4. A weekly omnibus continues to air on Sundays on Channel 4. Channel 4’s decision to transition the series came about because, according to Digital Spy, at least 64% of the youth-oriented program’s audience is watching via first-look streaming or on E4. In March 2014, fresh episodes of “Hollyoaks” began streaming on Hulu, the streaming service owned by The Walt Disney Company. A representative for the company announced that they no longer had rebroadcast rights to the show. The final episode released on the service initially aired on Thursday, November 30, 2023.
