White House to fete Library of Congress Gershwin Prize recipient Paul McCartney

The White House is throwing another epic bash, this time honoring Paul McCartney, winner of this year's Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song.

McCartney is the third songwriter to receive the award (Stevie Wonder and Paul Simon have been honored in previous years), and the Beatle will be feted in the East Room on June 2.

He won't be the only star in the room. An array of performers will perform McCartney's songs in tribute, including Wonder, Faith Hill, the Jonas Brothers, Dave Grohl, Jack White, Elvis Costello, Emmylou Harris, Herbie Hancock and Corinne Bailey Rae. Funnyman Jerry Seinfeld also will be on hand for a few remarks.

The program will be taped by WETA as part of the "In Performance at the White House" series and is scheduled to air on PBS stations nationwide on July 28.

McCartney accepts award, sings at White House

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ynews/ynews_pl2375

Paul McCartney was awarded the Library of Congress' Gershwin Prize for Popular Song at the White House on Wednesday night.

Before receiving the award, the former Beatle performed with stars including Elvis Costello, Stevie Wonder, Jerry Seinfeld, the Jonas Brothers, Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters, and Emmylou Harris. McCartney serenaded First Lady Michelle Obama with a rendition of "Michelle" and closed the night with "Hey Jude." McCartney said he had been "itching" to sing "Michelle" to the first lady at the White House, adding "I hope the president will forgive me."

McCartney also offered a glimpse of his politics, noting that he was especially happy to get the award from "this president" and joking that it was nice to get the Library of Congress award from "a president who knows what a library is."

The entire concert will air July 28 on PBS.
