Pope to visit ground zero, Yankee Stadium, Westchester

By RACHEL ZOLL

AP Religion Writer

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Pope Benedict XVI will make his first visit to the United States as pontiff next year, including ground zero in Lower Manhattan, a Westchester County seminary and a Mass at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx.

Archbishop Pietro Sambi told the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops on Monday that Benedict will travel to Washington and New York from April 15-20.

On April 18, the pope will address the United Nations and participate in an ecumenical service at a New York parish, according to the Archdiocese of New York.

A morning Mass with priests, deacons and members of religious orders will be held on April 19 in Saint Patrick's Cathedral, followed by a visit to Saint Joseph's Seminary in Yonkers, where the Pope will participate in an event with youth and young people.

Pope Benedict will spend his last day in New York by visiting ground zero, and by celebrating the Mass in Yankee Stadium.

The pope will visit the site of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in New York to show "solidarity with those who have died, with their families and with all those who wish an end of violence and in the search of peace," said Sambi, the Vatican's ambassador to the U.S.

The visit will take place on the third anniversary of Benedict's election to succeed Pope John Paul II, who died in April 2005.

An official welcome reception for Benedict will be held at the White House on April 16, Sambi said.

"The pope will not travel much, but he will address himself to the people of the United States and the whole Catholic Church," Sambi said.

Yep! I did not see Giuliani as a hero during 9/11. He used that moment as an opportunity to get into the good graces of New Yorkers who, by that time, were pretty fed up with him. He also did it for publicity and good PR. The real heroes behind the clean up of 9/11 would be Hillary Clinton, Chuck Schumer, and the police and firefighters and EMTs that day. Rudy is too much of an opportunist to get my vote and will say one thing and cut backroom deals to screw everyone else. He is interested in what is right for him as a politician rather than what is right for the people. I do not trust him.

Shawn I forgot to add this...you will not believe this but my friend in Long Branch, New Jersey. Her husband is former NYC Mayor, Ed Koch's, nephew. Apparently, Uncle Eddie is now selling graveyard plots to pass up the time these days and they have nothing to do with him. He has pretty much gone senile I guess, according to her ;)

I figure since we are discussing NYC mayors I might as well just throw that in there ;)

    • When Kat was in Ted's hotel room and he wasn't there, she started to write a note to leave for him, and then thought What? and texted him instead.  Love that.

    • Thank you. And above all, it's conflict, which is what soap opera is. Not characters just being annoying because a writer rushes through story for them.

    • Maybe Carney and Levin didn't get along, but he got along with Tolan. Who knows. I SO agree about Tolan. I am sure my jaw hit the floor when I watched her first scene. She had been hyped like crazy by the soap mags. They swore she was going to be a sensation like Mulgrew. I thought she had a speech impediment. I think more likely she just couldn't remember her lines so she ended up slurring them from nervousness. Not everyone can do soap acting, it's very difficult. There's memorizing so many lines, then there's so little rehearsal. I think she was a theater actor. Maybe she was a good one. But when the camera was fixed on her, she just...sucked. I had nothing particular against Nicolette Goulet. She just wasn't Mary. She had no chemistry with Levin. She didn't even look like she belonged in that family (a similar situation when they replaced Sarah Felder with that blond chick who was laughable as a police rookie). I don't believe it was impossible to recast the role. Kathleen Turner was doing soaps during this era. She would have been a phenomenal Mary. (Not to say that she would have been available, but just to point out there were good actors of that type around).

And I must say that Latvia's song is oddly magnetic. I think it deserves a place in the final. I would much rather have seen Australia and Serbia in the final than Lithuania and Malta though.   ETA: Malta, Israel, Armenia, Lithuania, Latvia, Austria, Greece, Luxembourg, Denmark and Finland qualified for the final. Australia, Serbia, Czechia, Georgia, Ireland and Montenegro eliminated.
    • Grant Aleksander is a charismatic performer, but I never liked Philip very much. I thought he was a sanctimonious ass at times and also too intense for me. I do think they had a great opportunity for his 2009 return story at showing a man who had come back from the brink and wanted to reclaim his life. If the show had continued, I am curious to see what they would have done. The show's biggest mistake with the Spauldings was keeping Alan much too long instead of having Philip take his place as head of the family. Ron Raines was the luckiest man in daytime to last for 15 years. Alan should have died in the early '00s at the latest, during the Philip/Olivia saga.
    • Too soon to make any judgments about nuTed, but I will say that I think they should've gone older.  And I also saw some chemistry between Bill and Leslie as well lol but Bill's part in Ted and Leslie's affair/Bill and Ted's friendship needed to be established a lot sooner than when the reveal happened. Their relationship could be a really good counterpoint to the Duprees.   But I really liked the parallel that was drawn between Kat and Chelsea, and what their father's did. I like their relationship and I hope they go on to investigate Laura's accident. I just hope it doesn't come until something happens between Eva and Tomas.  Btw, Happy Birthday, Eva! A lot of birthdays today
