July 12, 200718 yr Member I love Betty White, she is truely America's sweetheart........ From: http://www.etonline.com/tv/spotlight/48943/ The former "Golden Girl" talks turkey about TV history -- and gives ET an update on Estelle Getty's health.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fan fave BETTY WHITE has had one of the longest running careers in TV. Her first paying job was in 1945. Of course, she is best known for her comedic performances on series such as "The Golden Girls," "Mary Tyler Moore" and "Boston Legal." But that all changed recently when she appeared on CBS' hit daytime drama, "The Bold and the Beautiful." "I just recently did an arc of 10 soaps, and you're out there -- you don't get any laughs," comments one of America's favorite funny ladies. "But everybody cries. There's a lot of crying. So it dawned on me that that's the difference that makes comedy kind of hard. You can act your heart out, and you can cry the tears, and everybody thinks, 'Oh, gee, isn't that good?' And you can say a funny line, and if it doesn't get a laugh, you've had an instant review. You lose." One thing that Betty doesn't joke about is the health of former "Golden Girl" ESTELLE GETTY, who is suffering from Lewy Body Dementia, a condition she has had for about 10 years. "She is as well as can be expected," Betty told ET at the press conference for the upcoming PBS show, "Pioneers of Television." Betty will be joined on the 2008 winter-spring documentary series by TIM CONWAY ("The Carol Burnett Show"), ED McMAHON ("The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson"), TONY ORLANDO ("Tony Orlando and Dawn") and DICK CAVETT ("The Dick Cavett Show"). Of course, Betty and Tim have worked together several times on "The Carol Burnett Show." She recalls, "Those break-ups between HARVEY KORMAN and Tim were all planted and planned. Oh boy, were they planted and planned. Tim would come out, and they would rehearse right up to showtime, and then Tim would come out -- either changing maybe a half word, or an inflection, or a piece of wardrobe, maybe he would turn his tie over, nothing important, and it would put Harvey away." So what changes has Betty observed during her long-running career on the small screen? "The only answer I can come up with is that television hasn't changed as much as the audience has changed," she says. "When we started, my first jobs were five dollars -- well, first were free, of course. And when I got a job, five and one-half hours a day, six days a week, for $50 every week, I thought I had died and gone to heaven. But in those days, the audience hadn't heard every joke or seen every plot. It was just this magic new box in the corner of the room, and the audience was so willing to be amused. It's not that easy now."
