'Sex and the City' Movie In the Works

The long-awaited "Sex and the City" movie finally has a studio and a starting schedule.

According to Variety, New Line Cinema is close to a deal to finance and distribute a feature version of the long-running HBO comedy.

The show's key stars, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon, are all signed on to go into production on the "Sex" film this fall.

Michael Patrick King will direct from his own script.

Rumors of a "Sex and the City" feature have circled since the series went off the air in 2004. For a long time, the main holdout was Cattrall, though Variety suggests that her eventual contract for the feature included script input and a contract for a future series deal at HBO.

The actual plot of the feature is shrouded in mystery, as is the involvement of key "Sex" supporting players like Chris Noth.

"Sex and the City," based on the autobiographical columns by Candace Bushnell, won the 2001 Emmy for outstanding comedy series. Each of its four stars received Emmy nominations and Parker and Nixon won for lead actress and supporting actress in a comedy in 2005.

Sex and the Sequel

As Carrie Bradshaw might ask, does size matter? We'll finally have a chance to find out, as a deal has been struck to bring Sex and the City to a bigger screen in movie form.

Says Variety, "Fans of the show have clamored for a movie version of Sex and the City since the series ended." Have they? Count me as a fan of the show. Count me as not clamoring for a movie version of it. Or The Sopranos, or most other series I've liked that have lived out their natural lives.

It is only a slight exaggeration to say that I could count on the fingers of one foot the movie versions of series that have improved on, or even lived up to, the original. (And no, I have not seen The Simpsons movie, thanks for asking.) Borat would be one exception. Then there are reimaginings of classic series, like Paul Rudnick's take on The Brady Bunch, but with original SATC scribe Michael Patrick King writing and directing, I doubt there will be much reconceiving going on. And I enjoyed Serenity, but that movie was able to tie up loose ends and put a cap on the series Firefly. But SATC--that series has been capped, that closure has been closed. What's left to tell? Who's left to shtup?

Some might cite the Star Trek movies too, though I wouldn't. But tell me if you disagree. Is there anything more you want to know or see from the SATC gals? Are you dying to finally learn how Steve and Miranda's brownstone renovation turned out? Or will we all hate ourselves in the morning after this one?

Do we really need a 'Sex and the City' movie?

Sjp_l Now that each of the four leading ladies has signed on to the project, the long-anticipated Sex and the City flick is finally out of development limbo. And so, in true Carrie Bradshaw fashion (minus the Blahniks), we at PopWatch couldn't help but wonder: do we really need a SATC movie?

I guess now would be a good time to mention that I own several SATC DVDs, and while I don’t watch them daily, let’s just say that they’re not exactly collecting dust. I loved the series (I even had one of those ubiquitous "I'm a Carrie" T-shirts — a purchase that, you’ll be happy to know, is collecting dust these days).

But fan status aside, I feel I may be experiencing what Carrie felt when she was torn between Mr. Big and Aidan. On one hand, you have the prospect of a really great, drama-filled movie that brings you back to your love affair with four New York women who showed us that love is tricky, but totally worth fighting for.

On the other, we have the prospect of moving on. We'll always treasure what we had with SATC, but there comes a time when you have to let go. That doesn't mean we let go of the lessons we’ve learned. (Just to refresh: Don’t wear brand new Louboutins to the maternity ward, post-it notes are not acceptable channels for break-up conversations, and when you fall flat on your face, you get up, strut down the runway like nothing happened, and high-five Heidi Klum.)
