Coronavirus/Covid-19 Discussion Thread
Scholars tend to go down rabbit holes and don't see the obvious.... The smoking rates come from WHO, The population density is just pure math, 60 million people in a country 2/3 the size of California. High speed trains are all over Italy, we don't have that in most of the United States, but New York certainly does, the SUBWAY is ground zero for the spread of this in New York, I can guarantee that. Of all the factors, the population density, and public transit are by far the biggest (New York metro ares has double the population of Lombardy). One other factor that I didn't mention, is that culturally, Italians have less of a personal bubble, they will Kiss and hug in a situation where an American will shake hands. New York City has almost half of the infections in the whole country, what is different there than the rest of the US? The density, the public transit, and the prevalance of apartment living. Los Angeles' rate is much lower, because those same issues are not at play. And AMEN about the bidet. Americans and their sole use of toilet paper is filthy, IMO... never understood it. I've been talking about that on social media, and people think I'm nuts. There is even ANOTHER factor that I didn't mention, Italian meet after work in town squares and socialize with each other, as opposed to America where they tend to keep more into their own house and space.

It's partly the fault of the stores for not putting limits on purchases. Grocery store here does that, and everything has been going quite well.

It's because your hands come into contact with the virus, and you are constantly touching other parts of your body. A little itch, you adjust your clothing, etc. It's not everyone who bathes less frequently, just a larger percentage. It's simply a cultural difference, like women not shaving their armpits.

The reason Italy is in such bad shape? 1: Second oldest population on earth 2: 5 1/2 times the population density of the US 3: 12% higher smoking rate that the US 4: extensive use of public transit (trains) 5: Very high percentage of people living in apartments, and not single family homes. 6: Large percentage of citizens that only bathe once or twice a week.

They key is to never touch something someone else has touched, unless you have a glove on. Use a disposable nurses glove, and then remove it before your touch your own face (don't wear it for a long time)

Most people should have their own personal respirator mask like I do... but most don't think of it. Those work much better and aren't disposable like the white ones the medical people are using. You just change a cartridge.

I can't with the amount of stupid people I've seen on social media melting down because there are no BABY WIPES or toilet paper... I like to ask them what do they think people did to clean a baby before the wipes were invented in 1990. And why the toilet paper? Just wash your butt with soap and water! Should be doing that anyway. I'm gonna drop a truth bomb here: After you finish your business, you have POOP on your skin. If you had poop on your skin on any other part of your body, would you just wipe it off with toilet paper and call it good? If it was your leg? Elbow? Stomach? I'm wondering if New York is hoarding all the test kits.

Keep in mind that New York has one HUGE Typhoid Mary that has facilitated the explosion of cases there. It's the SUBWAY

New York has tested 3 times as many people as California, but still has 9 times more positive cases.

That's a bunch of hooey. People aren't really capable of social distancing in a sardine can like New York. They should have locked down 2 weeks ago. California was the first to lock down, and they have 1,500 cases, while New York has 12,000.

Even though we see these stories, they are very rare. Even in Italy, only 17 people under the age of 50 have died so far.

Some interesting things that is very telling as it pertains to the death rates of this virus. Men are dying at much higher rates than women, Men smoke at a rate of 35 % in Italy and 62% in China. Far far higher than female smoking rates. Try smaller stores as opposed to big chains. Stores are getting shipments at normal intervals, there's just a lot of hoarding going on. Some stores here have instituted limits on purchases, 2 per item. It's working well.

This does not matter. Doctors have the discretion to prescribe a drug for "off label use" if they feel it necessary. This woman is a selfish cow. I'd love to have seen her deal with the rationing of WW2.

We have milk shortages here this week. My BIL is so ridiculous, he posted a huge, long diatribe about how this is manufactured panic just to bring Trump down. I asked him if other countries on the other side of the planet are all conspiring to get rid of Trump. He of course, reacted badly... mainly because he's seen himself as big shot engineer all his life, but he's been unemployed for the last 5 years. His industry no longer has any use for him.- Coronavirus/Covid-19 Discussion Thread
this has got to be the most asinine thing I have heard yet. Why would they have an issue with people walking outside? This virus does not travel on the wind like pollen, for God's sake. Unless it's like an area that is so densely populated like Times Square or the equivalent. Wow.... that's bizarre. I admit I hate dogs, but if this explodes, there are going to be a lot of unhappy people- Coronavirus/Covid-19 Discussion Thread
Carl, I'm having a hard time finding hard data on exactly how many tests have been performed. The percentage of positives to tests given would tell a lot. As of 24 hours ago, Missouri had only had 143 people tested. 143!!!- Coronavirus/Covid-19 Discussion Thread
Oh, get the 93% diet grind ground beef. The stores here at least, have plenty of that. There are also many other cuts that are good and lean, you just have to be choosy. Some facts that may explain the higher death rates and transmission in Italy. First, Italy has an 8% higher smoking rate than the United States, second, Italy has the second oldest population on the planet, Japan being the oldest. And lastly, Italy is very densely populated. The United States has 6 times the population of Italy, but 32 times the land area. Oh, it only will bankrupt people who gamble in the stock market. I had grandparents who lived through the great depression, I had it drilled into me to NEVER put money in the stock market. And I'm glad I didn't.- Coronavirus/Covid-19 Discussion Thread
She needs to get a few cloth diapers, or in an emergency, cut up an old worn out bath towel or something.- Coronavirus/Covid-19 Discussion Thread
Very true. I'm glad I have an organic vapor respirator with pre filter that I regularly use for my work that will work beautifully for things like this. This is because Malaria is spread by mosquitos and not people.- Coronavirus/Covid-19 Discussion Thread
That won't happen. Once you recover, you have immunity for a certain amount of time. For most things like seasonal flu, cold, and yes, coronoavirus... the immunity window will most likely be a period of weeks to months, that's why these things come every winter- Coronavirus/Covid-19 Discussion Thread
Good advice. I'm a germaphobe myself, although my stress level has been very low because I work outside. So my work will proceed normally. I use disposable nurses gloves all the time, if I need to touch a gas pump, most anything.- The Politics Thread
Of course. The assclown never takes responsibility for any of his messes. Half of that news conference was a damned infomercial.- The Politics Thread
I would like to ask her if it was rampant voter suppression that gave Hillary 3.7 million more votes in the 2016 primary than Bernie. - Coronavirus/Covid-19 Discussion Thread
