  1. Less than a year since joining “Beyond the Gates” as a breakdown writer, Emmy Award winner Ron Carlivati has exited the daytime drama series, Soap Opera Network has learned. According to sources, Carlivati decided to exit the soap opera just as the show began writing work on Season 2, which premieres early next year on CBS. This marks the second major change among the show’s writing team following the exit of Robert Guza Jr. as co-head writer earlier this year. In Guza’s case, Tracey Thomson (“The Young and the Restless,” “Secrets of Sulphur Springs”) was brought in as his successor, both as co-head writer and executive producer, one of eight. In her role, Thomson works alongside series showrunner, executive producer, creator, and head writer Michele Val Jean in crafting the show’s long-term story. Another writer exiting the daytime drama series is Christopher Dunn, who joined the series in August 2024 as a breakdown writer. His previous writing work includes “Santa Barbara,” “Sunset Beach,” “Guiding Light,” “All My Children,” “Days of our Lives” and “The Young and the Restless.” It’s understood it was Dunn’s decision to exit. Elsewhere, scriptwriter Lynn Martin concluded her stint at the soap in June, according to LinkedIn. Similarly, while script writer Jazmen Darnell Brown also indicated on LinkedIn that he had concluded his run at the soap opera as well, he recently updated his page, revealing he’s back for Season 2. At press time, it was unknown if Carlivati’s decision to leave “Beyond the Gates” meant he would be joining a different soap opera as either head writer or breakdown writer, or if he simply just wanted a break from daytime. He previously served as head writer of “One Life to Live,” “General Hospital” and “Days of our Lives.” Receiving nine Daytime Emmy nominations throughout his career as a writer on soaps, Carlivati won the prestigious award in 2008 for “One Life to Live” and in 2018 for “Days of our Lives.” Under his guidance, “Days of our Lives” also won the Writers Guild Award for Daytime Drama for four consecutive years (2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024). He previously won the award in 2015 and 2017 for his work on “General Hospital.” With writing work for “Beyond the Gates” 4-6 months ahead of taping, don’t expect to see changes on-screen until at least early 2026. In the case of Guza, his name should remain in the credits through fall 2025. 4. Although he just recently celebrated his 10th anniversary as Chad DiMera on “Days of our Lives,” actor Billy Flynn is exiting Salem and is heading to Genoa City later this spring when he joins the cast of “The Young and the Restless” in a newly created role. In an interview with TV Insider, which first reported the news, Flynn said, “I am grateful for my years at ‘DAYS’; it changed my life in the best ways.” He adds, “I’ve always said these stories we tell are like doing a play, and I’ve spent the last 10-plus years playing this amazing character and telling one of the all-time great love stories. And now I’m excited for this opportunity and to test myself in a new way.” Flynn first appeared on “Days of our Lives” in the September 12, 2014 episode, replacing Casey Deidrick in the role, and quickly became a fan favorite as one half of the popular Chad and Abby pairing, dubbed “Chabby” by their fans. By 2019, the couple was featured in an online companion series, “Days of our Lives: Chad & Abby in Paris,” which helped expand storylines encompassing the adventures of some of the show’s most popular characters. Flynn received his first-ever Daytime Emmy Award nomination in 2017 in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series category for his portrayal. He went on to receive two additional nominations in the same category in 2019 and 2023. In 2021, he was a featured performer in both “Days of our Lives: Beyond Salem” (Chapter One), a limited series spinoff of the mothership series that aired on Peacock, and the Christmas movie “Days of our Lives: A Very Salem Christmas,” also released on Peacock. The projects later proved successful, with the main show moved to Peacock exclusively starting in September 2022. More recently, Flynn made a memorable appearance in an episode of the hit CBS drama "Matlock," playing Atticus Waverly, an employee at a tech startup that had its trade secrets stolen. “We support Billy as an actor and friend, and wish him nothing but continued success and happiness, personally and professionally,” said "Days of our Lives" executive producer Ken Corday. “He will certainly be missed in Salem.” In a statement, “The Young and the Restless” executive producer and head writer Josh Griffith said, “On behalf of the entire company of ‘The Young and the Restless,’ we look forward to welcoming Billy to the show.” He noted, “He will be a wonderful addition to ‘Y&R’s stellar cast.” Despite joining daytime's most popular soap opera, fans of "Days of our Lives" can expect to continue seeing Flynn in Salem for a bit longer due to the show's advanced tape-to-air schedule, currently set at nine months, which means he'll appear on the show well into 2026. 6. After a successful freshman season that saw the show’s pilot episode amass 17.6 million viewers across all platforms, up +338% from its initial broadcast on October 18, 2024, NBC has ordered a second season of “Happy’s Place,” starring Reba McEntire. The series is about a woman named Bobbie (McEntire) who inherits her father’s tavern (Happy’s Place) and is surprised to discover that she has a new business partner, Isabella (Belissa Escobedo), a twenty-something half-sister she never knew she had. Called “nostalgic, funny and heartfelt” by Variety, while the A.V. Club touted the show’s “comforting familiarity to its rhythms and its jokes, to its plots and its characters,” the series has rejuvenated NBC’s Friday lineup, improving its 8:00 p.m. ET/PT slot by 54% among Total Viewers and is the second best comedy launch on Peacock ever, behind only the network’s other freshman series “St. Denis Medical,” which was also renewed for a second season. In addition to McEntire, the series stars include Belissa Escobedo, Melissa Peterman, Pablo Castelblanco, Tokala Black Elk and Rex Linn. Created by Kevin Abbott and Julie Abbott, “Happy’s Place” is produced by Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, with executive producers Kevin Abbott, Reba McEntire, Michael Hanel, Mindy Schultheis, Matt Berry and Pamela Fryman. Overall, NBC notes that “Happy’s Place” and “St. Denis Medical” have reached nearly 45 million viewers across linear and digital platforms this season. 7. NBC has handed a pilot commitment order for an untitled Tracy Morgan single-camera comedy, which will see the former “Saturday Night Live” and “30 Rock” star reteam with Tina Fay, the latter series’ creator, who will also serve as one of the potential show’s executive producers, alongside Morgan. Written by Robert Clark and Sam Means, the comedy sees Morgan portraying a disgraced former football player on a mission to rehabilitate his image. Clark and Means will executive produce with Fey, Morgan, Eric Gurian and David Miner. Rhy Thomas is set to direct and executive produce the pilot, which Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, where Carlock, Means and Fey have overall deals, is producing with Little Stranger, Bevel Gears and 3 Arts. Morgan will next star in the Paramount+ half-hour comedy series “Crutch,” which is scheduled to premiere later this year on the streaming service. His deal allows him to star in both projects should the NBC pilot get picked up by the network and “Crutch” continues beyond its initial series order. NBC recently renewed freshman comedies “St. Denis Medical” and “Happy’s Place” for second seasons, set to air during the 2025-2026 television season. 8. Joining the fictitious world of Salem in 2020, writer Jamey Giddens is now ready to stir things up in Fairmont Crest, having recently joined the writing team of “Beyond the Gates” as a breakdown writer, Soap Opera Network has confirmed. In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, Giddens announced that he’s changing neighborhoods, but viewers still get to see his writing work appear on both the new CBS soap opera and Peacock’s “Days of our Lives” through at least early 2026, primarily due to the latter show’s advanced tape to air schedule. “My #DAYS episodes will continue to air into early 2026, so I’ll be showing both shows plenty of love on social media until, well, forever!” said Giddens. “Grateful for my time in Salem, and so excited to join my friend @MicheleValJean at her red-hot new sudser! #BeyondTheGates.” Michele Val Jean Sonja Flemming/CBS The move reteams Giddens with Val Jean, who wrote two episodes of “Ambitions,” the primetime sudser Giddens created that aired for one season on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network and starred Robin Givens. Val Jean is the creator, head writer, executive producer and showrunner of “Beyond the Gates.” In addition to Val Jean, Giddens also reunites with former “Days of our Lives” head writer Ron Carlivati and veteran soap writer Sara Bibel (“The Young and the Restless”), both of whom are breakdown writers at “Beyond the Gates,” as well as Susan Dansby (“As The World Turns,” “The Young and the Restless”), who worked with Giddens as a writer of at least three episodes of “Ambitions.” Dansby is the new show’s script editor. Ron Carlivati Todd Williamson/Peacock While at “Days of our Lives,” it was Carlivati who gave Giddens his first writing opportunity in daytime television, following his extensive journalism experience as co-owner of the popular news and entertainment website Daytime Confidential. Outside of the main show, Giddens also wrote for both seasons of “Days of our Lives: Beyond Salem,” the limited series spinoff that aired from 2021-2022 on Peacock. The show’s success helped network executives conclude that “Days of our Lives” could help the fledging streaming service attract new subscribers while maintaining its existing subscriptions. During his time at “Days of our Lives,” Giddens was honored with four Writers Guild Awards for his work as a member of the show’s writing team, having taken home the statuette for four consecutive years (2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024). In 2022, he took home his first-ever Daytime Emmy Award when the show won for Outstanding Drama Series Writing Team at “The 49th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards.” Overall, Giddens has received four Daytime Emmy nominations throughout his career, including one for his work on “Days of our Lives: Beyond Salem” (Chapter Two) in 2023. “A friendship that began in the Daytime Emmys press room has traveled all the way to Fairmont Crest! So thrilled that you’ve joined us. Welcome to #BeyondTheGates!” wrote Bibel on X, following the announcement by Giddens. In response to Bibel’s post, Giddens said, “Thanks, Sara! We can’t quit each other!” More recently, Giddens was the head writer of the BET soapy drama “Tyler’s Perry’s Sistas.” Note: The post Jamey Giddens Exits ‘Days of our Lives,’ Joins ‘Beyond The Gates’ As Breakdown Writer appeared first on the Soap Opera Network website. 9. The debut of “Beyond the Gates” during the week of February 24-28, 2025 had a halo effect on the bulk of CBS’ daytime lineup, with “The Young and the Restless” and “The Bold and the Beautiful” up by substantial margins compared to their performance during the same week last year, Nielsen data shows. The veteran CBS soaps also hit new season highs among Women 18-49 and Women 25-54 rating, the two key sales demographics used to sell ad rates for daytime television programming. For the week, the network’s launch of its first new daytime soap opera since 1987, and the first new soap opera to premiere on network television since the debut of “Passions” on NBC in July 1999, ranked a solid No. 1 in its timeslot opposite “General Hospital,” where the two compete head-to-head in most markets. With its 0.25 rating among Women 18-49, “Beyond the Gates” ranked a solid sixth for the week among daytime broadcast shows, up +0.06 week-to-week from the performance of the preview special “Beyond the Gates: Welcome to the Neighborhood” (0.25 ratings vs. 0.19 rating), and up +0.09 from the year ago performance of “The Talk” (0.25 rating vs. 0.16 rating). Among Women 25-54, “Beyond the Gates” again ranked sixth for the week, averaging a 0.39 rating in the key sales demographic, up +0.09 from the week ago performance of the daytime preview special and +0.14 from the year ago performance of “The Talk.” “Beyond the Gates” marked the network’s best performance in the 2:00 p.m. ET/1:00 p.m. PT slot since the week of March 7-11, 2022 among Women 18-49, and the best since the week of September 27-October 1, 2021 among Women 25-54 rating. The Young and the Restless As for the rest of the CBS lineup, “The Young and the Restless” was down slightly week-to-week among Women 25-54, averaging a 0.52 rating for the week, but the soap did manage to see an increase over its performance during the same week last year (0.52 rating vs. 0.45 rating). Additionally, among Women 18-49, the perennial ratings leader among daytime dramas was up week-to-week (0.35 rating vs. 0.31 rating) and year-to-year (0.35 rating vs. 0.30 rating). The Bold and the Beautiful “The Bold and the Beautiful” was also a big winner, up across the board. Among Women 18-49, the half-hour soap averaged a 0.31 rating, up +0.03 from one week earlier, and up +0.05 over its performance during the same week last year. Meanwhile, among Women 25-54, the soap hit a 0.47 rating for the week, up +0.02 from last week and +0.08 compared to the same week last year (0.47 rating vs. 0.39 rating). General Hospital Opposite its first soap competition since the cancellation of “As The World Turns” in October 2010, “General Hospital” was down week-to-week among both demographics, averaging a 0.19 rating among Women 18-49 and a 0.28 rating among Women 25-54. The Price is Right Elsewhere, “The Price is Right” remained the top show in key demos, with the game show’s second half-hour flat week-to-week among Women 18-49 (0.39 rating), while the first half-hour saw a nice week-to-week uptick (0.38 rating vs. 0.34 rating). The Drew Carey-hosted program was steady among Women 25-54 rating, with only the second half-hour posting week-to-week and year-to-year declines, albeit nothing to be concerned about. Wrap-Up What follows is a breakdown of how the daytime broadcast shows performed during the week of February 24-28, 2025 among Women 18-49 rating and Women 25-54 rating, including their performance during the comparable week last year. 11. Felicia Minei Behr, the well-regarded former executive producer of “All My Children,” who later served as Senior Vice President of ABC Daytime, has died. She was 82 years old. According to a statement released by her daughters, Kristina Behr Miller and Francesca Behr, on Facebook, Behr passed away on Sunday, March 2, following a five-year battle with brain cancer. “We are writing on behalf of our mom, Felicia. She passed away peacefully on March 2nd surrounded by loved ones. We appreciate the love and support you have given our family over the last 5 years as she battled brain cancer,” they said on Facebook. On Instagram, Kristina shared several photos of her mom and captioned the post, saying, “The irony that she has passed away on the day of the Oscars…it was her favorite, and we’d all watch it together as a family.” She added, “While we are heartbroken, we are at peace knowing she is at peace, that she no longer has to fight, and has been reunited with dad. Thankful for her always- her love, guidance, compassion, and wisdom. There just aren’t enough words.” “All My Children” ABC Born September 21, 1942 in Long Island, New York, Behr was named executive producer of “All My Children” in February 1989, having previously served as a producer and later executive producer at “Ryan’s Hope” from 1982-1988, with the series concluding its run in January 13, 1989. Her ascension to the top position at the Susan Lucci-led “All My Children” marked a return for Behr to the Pine Valley family, having worked as an associate producer on the series from its debut season in 1970 until 1975. Under her direction, “All My Children” saw ratings soar, becoming the second most watched daytime drama series, only behind perennial ratings leader “The Young and the Restless.” “As The World Turns” PGP After exiting “All My Children” in April 1996, Behr was soon named executive producer of “As The World Turns,” a position she held from December 1996-July 1999. By May 2000, she returned to ABC, this time as senior vice president of the network’s daytime lineup, overseeing operations of “All My Children,” “General Hospital,” “One Life to Live,” “Port Charles” and “The View.” Throughout her career, Behr received two Daytime Emmy Awards during her time as executive producer of “All My Children” in 1992 and 1992 when the soap opera took home the award for Outstanding Drama Series. During her reign, the series was consistently nominated in the coveted category. “I am so very very sad to hear this news. I worked with her first at ‘Ryan’s Hope’ and then at ‘All My Children,’” commented veteran casting director Judy Blye Wilson in response to the news. “She gave me tremendous support. I am forever grateful to her. My deepest sympathies.” “Your Mother gave me my break a big break in daytime,” stated actress Lauren B. Martin (Camille Bennett, “As The World Turns”). “I wish you nothing but peace and the knowledge that your mother will be a kind voice from heaven watching over you. Courage and strength in this time of change, I know that she will whisper your names you just have to listen. My sincere condolences. “I’m so sorry. Your mom convinced me to stay on at ‘World Turns’ and I’m so glad I got the chance to work with her long-term,” commented veteran soap writer Lisa Connor. “Sending prayers to your family. She was a legend.” Devastating news, Kristina Behr and Francesca. Felicia was my ally and sometime champion. I worked with her on ‘AMC’ and ‘ATWT’ and again when she was an executive at ABC,” shared Hal Corley, a former associate head writer at both “All My Children” and “As The World Turns” during Behr’s tenure at each series. “Nobody reveled in the form’s glories – and meeting its considerable challenges – more than Felicia,” continued Corley. “She was a rare producer who had absolute trust in those on her team: she delegated with confidence, investment, and respect. She appreciated soap writers as foundational to the genre’s success or failure, as few do. She was also famously unflappable: no crisis escalated into drama because Felicia left the drama to the small screen. A genuinely generous-spirited human being away from her tiered executive responsibilities, she was also my friend. She continued to stay in touch after we both left daytime, and a call could buoy me with nostalgia and wickedly funny memories of shared experience. And did Felicia have stories! I loved her dearly and send my heartfelt condolences to you both and your family.” Note: The post R.I.P. 12. Hosted by Conan O’Brien, ABC’s broadcast of “The 97th Oscars” on Sunday, March 2 was the most-watched and highest-rated program of the night, pulling in a 3.92 rating among Adults 18-49 and hitting a five-year high among Adults 18-34, while emerging as the most social program of the season for the first time on record, topping last month’s broadcasts of “The 67th Annual Grammy Awards” on CBS and “Super Bowl LIX” on FOX. With 18.07 million viewers tuning in, the awards show now stands as the most-watched entertainment telecast of the 2024-2025 television season. That said, last year’s telecast performed better, averaging 19.5 million viewers and hitting a four-year high for the awards show. Additionally, this year’s telecast was also below 2023’s broadcast, which averaged 18.8 million viewers. ABC should still be pleased with the performance as it topped the 10.4 million viewers who watched in 2021 and the 2022 viewership of the scandal-plagued broadcast that saw 16.6 million viewers watch Will Smith slap Chris Rock after the then-Oscar host made a slapstick joke about Smith’s wife and her alopecia. Among Adults 18-49, the Oscars were up +3% year-to-year (3.92 rating vs. 3.82 rating) and marked its best performance in the key sales demographic in two years (March 12, 2023), with its 3.17 rating among Adults 18-34 outperforming the show’s pre-pandemic audience from five years ago (since February 9, 2020). Averaging 104.2 million social interactions, the awards show stands as the most social program season-to-date, overtaking both the Grammys (102.2 million interactions) and the Super Bowl (62.4 million interactions). Overall, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences noted that the Oscars saw an increase of +82% year-over-year in social engagement across all platforms, including Hulu, where it streamed live for the first time, reaching 64 million likes, comments and shares. The ASL livestream on the official Oscars YouTube channel received 1.4 million views. Immediately following the Oscars, ABC broadcast a 30-minute preview of the upcoming season of “American Idol,” which was viewed by 5.93 million viewers and earned a 0.84 rating among Adults 18-49. The post-Oscars viewing was the talent competition series’ best performance for a season launch in three years (since February 27, 2022) among Total Viewers and Adults 18-49. On Sunday, March 9 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT, “American Idol” officially kicks off its eighth season on ABC with episodes available to stream the next day on Hulu.
