@FrenchFan Your efforts and willingness to share are much appreciated. The 1960's soap era is not well documented and much misinformation has been printed and reprinted, so these scripts are the only way of getting true info.

Thinking about Sara, she was GL's first woman doctor-a sign of the times.

ATWT had Susan around this time also. TD had lead the way with Maggie and Althea and Days had Laura.

Patricia Roe would have been playing Sara at this time- she continued throughout 68 until Millette Alexander too over.

I wonder what the circumstances were?

Was it a case of Millette wrapping up her EON stint and GL grabbed her and decided to replace Roe? Nowadays we have so much more info on this sort of stuff.

The Ferros only lasted about a year. They had to follow Agnes' long run. I wonder if their stories were well received ? Maybe not...

I agree. This era is not well-enough documented.

I hope I will find more about Susan's early days on ATWT. It was definitely a change to have women doctor. I like Sara on GL. Alexander played Julie Jamison on EON until New Year's Eve 1969. I think she moved to GL in January 1969. Jill Andre played Sara between Roe and Alexander. She was in the role in early Sept. 1968 as I have her name on a script. Don't know exactly when she took over from Roe.

The Ferros were there in late 1966 after Nixon and at least until Christmas 1967. The Averys are then credited for some 1968 scripts I have before Sommer/Soderberg starting in 1969.

@FrenchFan I've said it before and I'll say it again. Your command of the English language is incredible! That, on top of the fact that you have excellent taste in soaps. You are right in that the late 60s were a great time for soaps, in general, and Guiding Light, in particular. Also As the World Turns, Days of Our Lives and Another World.

Thanks !! I studied English and nearly became an English teacher in France, but finally chose another teacher area. I'm sure my English is not perfect but I do my best 🫠

I fell in love with the 1960s' soaps, mostly CBS ones. I try to find the most about ATWT, GL but also EON (very very difficult to find scripts but I have finally ordered some 1967 scripts), LOL (very complicated too), SFT (every script seem available but it is expensive to order), TSS (1967-1969 are nearly complete so I will order everything I can too from this era).

  3. I find this era of Guiding Light totally fascinating. Here a few more episodes from late 1967. Sorry they are not all consecutive. I had no idea they had brought Meta but her talk with Paul about Robin's death is fascinating !

    #5185 – Friday, October 13th 1967

At the Hayes’, Jane picked up letters and told Peggy she had a letter from Cedars. Peggy anxiously read that she was asked for an interview and imagined she might have passed. Jane was sure Peggy would be a terrific nurse even if she would miss her at home. Peggy thanked Jane for her help. Jane told her that George was at the airport to pick up Johnny. Peggy felt guilty Johnny had left town previously. She knew he was coming for Robin’s funeral but hoped it could be a new start.

At the airport, George greeted Johnny. He was shocked by Robin’s death. It all seemed very sudden. George confirmed what Ed told Johnny by phone – Robin was walking on a dark road and she was hit by a car. Johnny remembered when Paul was a widower for the first time. Johnny wondered why he and his father couldn’t seem to understand each other.

George had left Johnny at Paul’s. Paul was happy to his son back home. Johnny said he wished he had told his father and Robin nicer things back in the day. He added that Paul supported him but then Paul could lean on his son.

    #5195 – Friday, October 27th 1967

At Cedars’, Paul was surprised to hear Martha on the phone telling that Sara was going to attend a medical meeting in St. Louis. Paul met with Sara and told her he thought it was a good idea for her to attend this meeting. It would be a much needed vacation for her. He was worried that Sara might go with memories of what Robin told her before dying. Paul assured Sara that Robin was mentally ill and that Sara shouldn’t feel guilty for her death. After Sara left Paul, Martha told Sara it was sad Paul couldn’t go with her as he would need a break.

Dr. Jackson asked Sara to talk with her for a few minutes in his office. Sara told Dr. Jackson she was happy to leave for the medical meeting for a few days. She needed to release the pressure and assured Dr. Jackson she only confided into him that she was in love with Paul. Sara felt bad Robin found out what she was really feeling for Paul despite her denying. She couldn’t help but feel guilty. Dr. Jackson could listen to her but he couldn’t do much more to help Sara.

Leslie woke up Ed in bed on Christmas morning and brought him coffee. She was disappointed Ed had to go to the hospital on Christmas day but Ed assured her they would have a perfect Christmas dinner. Ed felt that surgery was a burden for Leslie who worried about the time Ed would spend at the hospital.

At Sara’s, Tracy was very anxious to open the Christmas presents but Sara thought they should wait for Paul and Johnny. Tracy asked how Johnny was but Sara said she barely knew him. Tracy said she heard about him from Peggy whom Johnny used to have a thing with. Sara greeted Paul and Johnny. Paul told Sara he had a very exciting present from Johnny – his son had decided to become a doctor. As Paul made a toast to old friends, Tracy flirtly made one to new friends while looking at Johnny, who clearly caught her eye. Tracy asked Johnny for a walk and Sara and Paul complied.

At the Bauers’, Papa and Bill were on the phone with Hope and Mike wishing them a Merry Christmas. Bill wasn’t happy Ed and Leslie wouldn’t be there for Christmas but Bert told him that was their little Christmas and they wanted to be alone but they would come and say hello. The doorbell rang. Papa was shocked to see Meta, who decided last minute to visit her father.

    #5236 – Tuesday, December 26th 1967

In his office, Paul told Stephen Jackson he was wrong to drag this into Joe Werner and Ed Bauer’s bickering even if he understood Jackson was in a bad position as Joe was his protegee and Ed his son-in-law. Paul told Stephen that he wouldn’t bring Ed before the committee for censure. It was only a matter of intern discipline for Stephen to deal with. Paul only wanted Ed and Joe to understand their personal difference had to stay out of the hospital and Stephen had to tell them.

Dr. Jackson reunited both Joe and Ed in his office. He told Ed he wouldn’t be brought before the committee as a decision of Dr. Fletcher but Joe and Ed had to stop acting like fighting kids. Joe admitted it might have been a misunderstanding the night Ed was supposed to be on call. Both Joe and Ed agreed to forget about this.

Meta visited Paul in his office. She said Bruce couldn’t join her but she wanted to see the Bauers for Christmas. She told Paul she had some medical issues which kept her from attending Robin’s funeral. Meta didn’t want Paul to feel guilty. She remembered when she married Joe Roberts, his daughter Kathy messed up her life until she met Mark Holden. And Meta blamed herself for Kathy’s unhappiness and for Robin’s – Kathy’s daughter – too. But she didn’t anymore : she knew Robin was born in tragedy, lived in tragedy and died in tragedy. Meta was sure that Robin never got over her mother’s tragic death. It was ironic a car took Robin’s life too. Paul hoped it was really the car. Meta asked him if he suggested Robin killed herself. Paul said he hoped he was wrong and told Meta he would like her to meet someone.

    #5237 – Wednesday, December 27th 1967

In the morning at the Bauers’, Bert couldn’t understand what happened with Ed not being brought before the committee for censure. Bill told Bert he felt she was too much involved with working at Cedars. She had taken this job when he lost his but as he had a new job, Bill saw no reason for Bert to keep working. Bert didn’t understand this sudden change of heart. She said she had already thought of stop working when Mike and Hope came back to town but Bill insisted he wanted Bert to be a full-time housewife like she used to be.

Later, Leslie arrived to help Bert plan dinner as she would come with Ed. Bert was pleasantly surprised as how Leslie could manage her new life as a married woman after the luxury she knew as a youngster. Bert assured Leslie that the the first blessings of marriage would end someday. Leslie felt Bert was not feeling too well and added she’d like to consider Bert as her mother, as hers died when she was young.

In the living room, Ed and Leslie waited for Bert and Bill who were in the kitchen while Papa had left to fetch Meta, who had insisted to stay in a hotel. Leslie was proud to tell Ed she got closer to Bert that afternoon. She added Bert would stop working at the hospital which raised Ed’s suspicions. When Bill and Bert entered, Ed told Bill that Bert should have decided by herself if she wanted to keep working or not. Bert got angry and told Ed to mind his own business.

    #5238 – Thursday, December 28th 1967

Back at their apartment, Leslie asked Ed why he had to get into an argument with his father. She wondered how much Ed still resented his father. Ed told his wife that her father is a big man while Bill was only a little one. He wouldn’t tell her how many failures Bill had in his life. Ed admitted he was afraid to take a drink because he could become like his father.

The following morning at Cedars, Sara was in Paul’s office. She told him that she would stop working with Dr. Jordan in February as the grant should be given to a neurologist and her speciality was internal medicine. She was thinking of going back to Chicago. Paul told Sara he had the idea of offering contracts to keep the best residents at Cedars. She agreed to think about the option.

At her home after dinner, Sara told Tracy she was thinking of going back to Chicago in February and of course would like Tracy to come with her. Sara admitted research was fascinating for a while but she missed working with patients. Tracy asked her why she couldn’t practise medicine here. Sara admitted she could, she had an offer. Tracy told her aunt she noticed she was very fond of Dr. Fletcher.

    #5239 – Friday, December 29th 1967

At the Bauers’, as they waited for Bert to come back from Meta’s hotel, Papa noticed Bill seemed moody. Bill admitted he was thinking of his fight with Ed. He told Papa that everytime he got closer to his son, he felt like Ed was drifting away. Ed was full of anger. Bill was afraid Ed would end up destroying himself because of this anger.

Bert was having coffee in Meta’s room after sharing dinner with her sister-in-law. Meta admitted to Bert that she felt Ed was not well, always angry but Bert assured her son was very fine. Meta thought that Leslie was a very nice young girl and marriage with her might help Ed turn off his rebel side. Meta reminded Bert of how ambitious she used to be with Bill and maybe she transfered her ambition towards Ed. Bert turned the conversation to Meta who admitted she had been ill but didn’t want to worry the family. That’s why she came for Christmas, she had to see Paul and explain why she missed Robin’s funeral.

At the Fletchers’, Paul asked Johnny if he had thought about areas of medicine he might be interested in and Johnny talked about psychology. When Paul talked about how excited he was about the new project for Cedars, Johnny asked why Paul didn’t accept to become Medical Director years ago. If Paul had closed his private clinic sooner, Anne wouldn’t be dead. Johnny couldn’t understand why he took this decision too late.

  4. Some episodes written by Theodore & Mathilde Ferro dealing with Robin's death.

    #5175 – Friday, September 29th 1967

At the lodge, an hysterical Robin confronted Paul and Sara. She said she would go back to the cabin alone. Paul tried to calm her but she didn’t want his help, she said he could stay with Sara. After Robin left, Sara felt sorry for Paul. She was really hoping Robin would improve. Paul and Robin had met Dr. Walter Sanders earlier that day and he talked about his neurotic wife he had divorced from. It made Robin very uncomfortable. Sanders had insisted on how Paul and Sara met in Chicago years ago and spent time together. Paul admitted to Sara he never forgot that he proposed to her years ago. Sara told Paul she turned him off because she knew Paul was alone and didn’t really love her. Paul admitted he should have been more honest to Robin when Sara joined staff at Cedars and she became suspicious.

Paul and Sara didn’t notice Robin was listening to them. Paul asked Sara if she was in love with him at the time. She admitted she was very fond of him. Sara advised Paul to bring Robin to Dr. Lindsey and she left.

When she arrived in her cabin, Sara was shocked to find Robin seated, waiting for her. Robin told her she had listened to her conversation with Paul. She was not crazy, there used to be something between Paul and Sara in Chicago. She heard Paul had proposed to Sara.

    #5176 – Monday, October 2nd 1967

Robin said she should have listened to her mother Kathy and never gave all her heart. She knew that Paul proposed to Sara years ago in Chicago. Sara assured Robin there was no love, Paul was lonely and had found in Sara someone to talk to. Robin said Paul would like her to be crazy but she was not. She was sure Sara came to Cedars to see Paul again. Sara couldn’t deny she remembered Paul when she came to Cedars as a very good friend and a teacher. She was glad he had married again since Anne’s death and seemed happy. Robin countered they stopped being happy when she lost her baby. She asked why Paul lied to her about his past feelings for Sara then. Robin told Sara she was letting Paul go. It might be a new beginning for them. She slammed the door and left.

Sara hurried to the lodge to see Paul. She told him Robin was on the terrace when she heard them talk. She had confronted Sara and told her she would divorce Paul. Sara was worried about something Robin said – « there are many ways to give Paul freedom. Divorce is only one of them. ». Paul began searching for Robin but she was nowhere to be found.

    #5177 – Tuesday, October 3rd 1967

Paul told Sara that Robin was not in the cabin and that clothes were missing. Paul was very worried as he hadn’t noticed how sick Robin was. They realized she had probably left and they had to find her. They asked the clerk if he had seen Robin or if she had called for a taxi but he assured them it was not possible at the time of the night as they were out in the country. The clerk checked and Robin hadn’t taken Paul or Sara’s car to leave the mountains.

Paul told Sara that Robin might be trying to worry her. She did that once when she went to the Bauers in the middle of the night. Sara was sure Paul would get help for Robin once they were back home but Paul wasn’t so sure. Sara realized Robin could still be there and hiding, only to frighten Paul.

Back in the Fletchers’ cabin, Paul looked for Robin again to no avail. He couldn’t understand why Robin was trying to punish him. They had hard times when Johnny couldn’t accept their relationships, when she lost the baby but Paul was always there for her. Paul found a note. Robin had written : « Goodbye Paul ».

    #5178 – Wednesday, October 4th 1967

Paul and Sara wondered why the note could mean. Paul felt guilty for not reaching to Robin earlier. The only option they saw was that Robin was walking towards the train station, ten miles away from the cabin. They decided to go by car and look for her.

In the car, Paul and Sara were stopped by a police officer because there had been a car accident. When the officer noticed Paul’s M.D. on his license plate, he told him there would be need of a doctor.

When Paul and Sara arrived on the site of the accident, they recognized Robin. She was the one who was run over by a car. Paul tried to call for Robin but she wasn’t responsive. Sara and Paul noticed she was probably suffering from a skull fracture. The car’s driver was very agitated. He said he didn’t understand what happened. He saw Robin with a suitcase near the road. He didn’t know if she was trying to thumb a ride of if she threw herself voluntarily in front of the car. Paul was shattered. The ambulance finally arrived but Paul knew there was no time left.

    #5179 – Thursday, October 5th 1967

Late at night, Bert, Bill and Papa were back from Ed and Leslie’s wedding. They had coffee and tea talking about the day. Bert was touched Dr. Jackson seemed moved their families were tied. She was worried about Robin though.

In Leslie’s apartement, Ed carried her across the threshold. Leslie was touched the room was full of flowers Ed had bought for her. Ed admitted it was Bert, Bill and Papa who thought of the flowers. They noticed the Bauers also filled in the fridge for the newlyweds.

After eating, Leslie told Ed she felt grateful being loved by the Bauers. Ed assured their past mistakes were all behind. The phone rang. Ed answered. It was Paul. After he hung up, Ed told Leslie that Robin had been run over by a car and suffered a skull fracture. Ed was wanted for surgery. Leslie totally understood and gave him his coat.

    #5180 – Friday, October 6th 1967

At the nurses’ station, Paul told Sara that Robin’s state was still the same. He was waiting for Ed to operate. Paul felt guilty. He thought he did everything he could to help Robin. He kept thinking about what the car’s driver told them about Robin maybe jumping voluntarily in front of the car. Ed finally arrived.

Dr. Canfield, member of the local hospital, greeted Ed. The doctors thought she wouldn’t survive the surgery and Sara suggested they could stop the internal bleeding with no surgery but Dr. Canfiled assured they couldn’t wait. Either they stopped the bleeing but she might not survive surgery or they didn’t and she would probably would die of internal bleeding. Ed asked Paul if he wanted them to make the decision but Paul assured he had to. Paul chose for her to have the surgery.

A neurosurgeon joined Ed. Paul told Sara that Robin had been suicidal when she lost her baby but he could help her go through. He said he wanted to help her again. Ed arrived. He gently told Paul that Robin didn’t survive. Paul put his head in his hands.

  5. 2 hours ago, Paul Raven said:

@FrenchFan thank you for supplying those 1962 eps. This clears up something else that was puzzling me. I was mistakenly proclaiming that Robin never married Alex Bowden, based on the fact that Robin was involved with Mike and Karl in 1959 and would go onto marry Mike. And then by 1964 was married to Paul.

So she squeezed in a marriage to Alex along the way. In the 64/65 scripts, Alex and Robin have little to do with one another so I assume the marriage was short lived and didn't end well.

From what I gather, Mike and Robin’s marriage turned short lived as Mike felt guilty about Karl’s death but Robin showed little compassion. Bert didn’t like Robin’s antics and encouraged older gallery owner Alex Bowden’s interest in Robin. Mike and Robin got an annulment and Robin married Alex. She felt very insecure about Alex’s 1st wife, Doris’, presence. The insecurities were fulled by Anne as we can see in the summaries. Robin and Alex would divorce during Paul’s trial for murdering his wife ans Robin would get closer to Paul.

  6. For those interested, here are the summaries for a dozen episodes from late 1962 (about the death of Anne Benedict Fletcher).

    #3908 – Thursday 10/18/1962

At Julie and Jane’s apartment, Jane was cooking but Julie told her she couldn’t stay for dinner as she was meeting Mike. Jane suggested she invite Mike to eat at the flat instead but Julie was unsure. Jane told Julie about her talk with her brother. Some friends of Paul’s were buying an interest in his clinic and he would be able to pay his debts – Alex Bowden and Doris Crandall. Julie told Jane that Doris called George in his office and she sounded very weird. She asked Jane how Anne would take the news but Jane said Paul didn’t talk about Anne with her.

At the Fletchers’, Anne repeated her ultimatum to Paul : he gave up the clinic or she would take Johnny and leave him. Anne couldn’t stand living in this neighbourhood anymore. Paul said she didn’t stop complaining for 4 years. Anne begged him : giving up the clinic was the last chance. The phone rang and Paul left to meet a patient.

Anne heard a noise in the clinic. Frightened, she grabbed the pistol hidden in the drawer. She opened the door and found Doris. Anne apologized. She said she had read about a holdup in the neighborhood. Anne noticed Doris sounded drunk. She said she wanted to talk with Anne.

    #3909 – Friday 10/19/1962

The Bauers were having dinner. Bruce told Meta, Bert and Papa that Paul was finally able to pay his debts because Doris and Alex both gave him $25.000 against %5 of the clinic each. Bruce was happy for Paul but said Anne would be offended. Meta said she dropped in on Robin on the morning and saw Anne and she felt like she had a weird feeling. Probably if Doris and Alex helped Paul together, Robin was offended. Bruce was sure there was something between Doris and Alex only in Robin’s mind.

At the Fletchers’, Doris told Anne that Robin visited her at her hotel. Anne said Robin probably resented her investment in the clinic as much as she did. Doris was sure that Anne poisoned Robin’s mind about her. She accused Anne of wanting Paul’s failure since day 1. Anne assured she was packing and moving out. Doris was horrified she wasn’t more sensitive to Paul’s needs. Anne asked Doris to go and accused her of meddling in her and Robin’s life. She reminded Doris she came to Los Angeles to remarry Alex and when he married Robin, she tried to kill herself on a bottle of rotgut. Anne ordered her to leave. She went to the clinic, tried to find a lighter for her cigarette. Her cigarette dropped from her fingers to the floor.

    #3910 – Monday 10/22/1962

Paul had come back home. Anne told him Johnny might be not asleep yet if he wanted to see his son. Paul asked Anne if she was really to leave. She said even her father didn’t believe she would but she was fed up trying to convince Paul to give the clinic up. She was really leaving. Paul explained he left tonight to attend a little girl who needed insulin. He saved her life. Anne didn’t want to hear.

Paul went to the clinic to clean it. After opening a drawer, he asked Anne if she took something out of his desk. She denied and Paul asked if anyone came. She said Doris was there and had the gall to try to lay down rules of behavior for Anne. She added she told Doris what she thought of her – meddling with the Fletchers and Robin Bowden’s life. Paul told Anne he noticed someone was there because the alcool bottle was very low and he reminded he and Bruce only had a small drink earlier this evening. Paul was worried Doris had drank because she was an alcoholic but hadn’t touched alcohol in a year.

Paul decided to look for Doris. Anne didn’t want to stay alone but Paul reminded her she had her gun. Anne was shocked. She remembered taking the gun because she was afraid a robber was coming but it was Doris. She was sure she had put the gun here, in the clinic but the gun was nowhere to be found. Paul and Anne realized Doris must have taken the gun.

    #3911 – Tuesday 10/23/1962

At the Benedicts’, Paul told Helene he didn’t think that Anne would finally leave Paul but Helene wasn’t surprised as Anne had complained about the situation for months. Henry admitted he was pleasantly surprised that Paul had Alex Bowden investing in the clinic and thought he might have misjudged him. Henry wished Helene would call Anne to talk about the situation.

On the phone, Anne was fed up with her mother’s meddling. She told Helene about Doris’ visit earlier to convince her not to leave Paul. She added Doris had fallen off the wagon and Paul had left to find her but Anne had nearly finished packing and was ready to go at her parents’ before Paul came back. After Anne hung up, she wrote a note to Paul saying she was leaving but she heard a noise in the clinic. Doris was there, fighting to say conscious and was calling for Paul.

Anne moved to the clinic and found Doris. She told her Paul wasn’t there. A drunk Doris told Anne she only wanted Paul to be happy. Paul arrived. He begged Doris to give him the gun. As she refused, Paul struggled with her. Doris insisted Paul let her go. She wanted to kill herself. The gun finally went off. Anne fell forward on the floor.

    #3912 – Wednesday 10/24/1962

Jane was working on Emergency with Miss March that night and Dr. Berger. It was her first night. Dr. Berger told Jane he noticed her already but she was monopolized by her brother, Dr. Fletcher. Berger said he heard Paul might come back to Cedars’ but Jane assured it was not true. Berger added he admired Paul for his clinic in such a difficult part of town. Miss March questioned Jane about Paul’s family – Johnny, who was five years old or Anne – when the phone rang. It was Paul asking for an ambulance as his wife had been shot.

Jane and Berger arrived at the clinic and Paul left with Berger for Cedars with Anne in the ambulance. Jane stayed with a drunken Doris who asked Jane if someone was hurt. Jane called Mrs. Mulligan and asked her to stay with Johnny until Paul came back because she had to take Doris to the hospital. Jane took the bottle away from Doris and told her a cab would be coming.

Back at the hospital, Jane asked Miss March how Anne was. She said Dr. Berger was operating her. Paul hysterically told Jane he shot Anne with the gun he bought her. Jane tried to understand what happened when Berger came out from surgery. He told Paul that Anne was dead. She didn’t have a chance.

    #3913 – Thursday 10/25/1962

At the Bauers’, Bert was on the phone with Bill. She was happy he had told her he would see Bert for Thanksgiving – either he would be home or Bert and Billy could come to Seattle. The talk turned to the Fletchers’ and Meta and Bruce told Papa they hoped Anne would warm up to Paul’s ideas and the neighbourhood they were living in. Papa pondered that saving the clining but losing the wife might be a hollow victory for Paul. The phone rang. It was Jane, trying to reach Bruce.

After Bruce hung up with Jane, he told the Bauers that there had been an accident and Anne was dead, that Paul called an ambulance from the clinic. Bruce asked Bert and Meta to go to the Fletchers’ to tend to little Johnny as Jane only found a temporary sitter. He told the ladies to stay in the house and not in the clinic. After they left, Papa asked Bruce if Jane said more. Bruce admitted Jane told him that Paul shot Anne.

At the hospital, Jane told Bruce she arrived at the clinic with Dr. Berger, found Anne on the floor and Paul was standing there. She said a drunken Doris was also present at the scene. She added Paul repeated he killed Anne and locked himself up in Bruce’s office. Dr. Berger told Jane he would call the police as Anne died by gunshot.

    #3914 – Friday 10/26/1962

At the Benedicts’, Helene and Henry wondered why Anne was so long at coming as she said she had nearly finished packing her bags. Henry said Paul might have come back home and convinced her to stay. They decided they should call her. At the Fletchers’, Meta and Bert found the note Anne had written saying she was leaving with Johnny. The phone rang. Bert answered to Helene who asked to speak to her daughter. Bert said something happened and suggested Henry would come.

Meta and Bert worried about they would bring the news to the Benedicts when Bruce called. He told Meta that Paul locked himself up in his office and he had to give him a sedative. Meta was horrified when Bruce told her that Paul kept repeating he had shot Anne. Bruce hadn’t talked to Doris yet – she was present on the scene and was on a room at Cedars.

Henry and Helene arrived. Meta told them Anne had an accident at the clinic and she was dead. Bert told it involved a pistol and Henry realized the gun Anne kept in the clinic was not there. Henry was angry as Bert tried to keep him calm. He found the note Anne left. He became sure it was not an accident and reached the breaking point, ordering to know what happened to his daughter.

    #3915 – Monday 10/29/1962

Meta was back at the Bauer’s. She told Papa that Bert was staying with Johnny until Paul would come home. She explained Papa that Paul kept repeating to Bruce he had shot Anne and she had to tell the Benedicts their daughter was dead. She added that Doris Crandall was found on the death scene when the ambulance arrived. She was too drunk to call about what happened. Bruce should be back soon and Meta would go to Alex and Robin to tell them the news.

At Cedars’, a nurse tried to talk to Doris when Bruce entered the room. The nurse told Bruce that Doris was given Librium to stay calm. The nurse left and Bruce talked to Doris. She was talking nosense, repeating Anne not to leave Paul. Bruce told her that Paul would need her. He asked her if there was a gun at the clinic. She said she hated guns. Bruce begged her to tell him who shot the gun but Jane arrived, telling Bruce that Lt. Wade was there.

Jane asked Bruce how Doris was. He said she was still drunk and he asked about Paul who was still in Bruce’s office, telling he killed his wife. Jane thought Bruce should talk to Lt. Wade first. Jane would stay with Doris who was still going through delirium.

    #3916 – Tuesday 10/30/1962

At the Fletchers’, Bert asked Helene if she shouldn’t go home and come and see Paul in the morning. Helene asked Bert to keep her company. She couldn’t understand how Anne’s death could have happened. Anne knew how to deal with firearms. Bert wondered if they should tear up Anne’s note as it would bring much more sadness to Paul. Helene said Paul had the right to know. Helene finally broke down when Bert put Anne’s suitcase away.

Bruce met Lt. Wade at Cedars and told him questioning Paul should wait as he was under shock. Bruce said he briefly questioned Paul about Anne’s shooting but his answers didn’t make any sense. Wade asked about Doris. Bruce said she used to be Paul’s receptionist and she was present on the scene but she was drunk and couldn’t say anything coherent either at the moment. Wade insisted he had to talk to Paul and Bruce had to agree.

In Bruce’s office, Wade asked Paul who the gun belonged to and Paul said it was Anne’s. Paul confirmed Doris’ presence. He said the gun went off. Bruce insisted Wade put an end to the questioning for the night.

    #3917 – Wednesday 10/31/1962

At the Fletchers’, Bert was on the phone with Bruce who told her he was bringing Paul home. Helene told Henry they should leave, suggesting they could take care of Johnny for a while, taking him on a trip somewhere maybe. Lt. Wade arrived. He told Henry he was there for a routine check. Bert assured Lt. Wade nobody went to the clinic. When Wade asked about Doris, Henry was shocked to learn she was present on the death scene. Henry added Anne kept the gun for protection as the neighbourhood was shady. Helene and Henry went to pack Johnny’ things.

Wade found Anne’s note. Bert thought it should be kept for Paul but Wade put it in his pocket. Wade went to the clinic. He picked up the gun and noticed the empty bottle. After he left, Bert told Helene that Wade gave her a receipt for the not he took with him. Paul arrived with Bruce. Helene told him she wanted to take Johnny and he admitted it was for the best. Paul was on a daze and didn’t pick it up when Helene mentioned going on a trip with Johnny. Henry asked Bruce if Doris was really present when Anne was shot dead. Bruce assured Henry there was more important at the moment.

    #3918 – Thursday 11/01/1962

Bruce arrived at the Bauers’ to pick up Meta. He told her and Papa that he asked Bert to stay with Paul for the night as the Benedicts had left with Johnny. Bruce said he was relieved Paul didn’t say the police he shot Anne as he previously repeated. Bruce added Lt. Wade knew Paul from his work with the local precinct. Bert had told Bruce that Lt. Wade took a note Anne wrote prior to her death indicating Paul she was leaving him. Bert had also seen Lt. Wade take the gun and the empty bottle. Bruce was sure it was the bottle he used with Paul when they toasted to the saved clinic but he was sure it was not empty, so he thought it was linked to Doris Crandall.

Bruce tried to reason with Papa and Meta about why Doris was there and how she was linked to Anne’s shooting. Meta asked Bruce to drop at Robin and Alex’s before going home because they should know before Anne’s death was in the newspaper the following morning.

At the Bowdens’, Alex was back from an exhibition at the gallery. Robin was very angry that Alex forced her to see a psychiatrist. She asked Alex if her seeing a psychiatrist was a condition for their marriage because she had a condition for their marriage : Doris Crandall. Robin said she nearly felt guilty thinking she was imaging things between Alex and Doris but then she knew she was right. She had gone to see Doris after Anne Fletcher told her how Alex and Doris both invested in Paul’s clinic. Robin told Alex she knew Doris did this to get closer to Alex, she was not blind. Alex assured Robin she was only repeating Anne’s words. Meanwhile, Bruce and Meta arrived at the Bowdens’.

That line about Papa Bauer being sick was probably a budget thing as there were quite a lot of cast in that ep. Truthfully they could have had Bruce at the hospital for that ep at least, as he had few lines.

I don't think that was Phillip Sterling as George Hayes. I believe George came later as the lawyer who mentored Mike and that was where Mike met Julie, who worked as George's secretary.

By the time Paul left in 1970 he had been on 14 years and maybe Bernard Grant was ready for something different and the writers (the Soderbergs,I think) were more interested in other characters.

Paul had been widowed twice, but his son Johnny was still on at that point.

Did his OLTL character Steve work with Gillian Spencer again (Vicki) or was she already gone by then.?

Grant first appeared on Dec 16, 1970 and his first scène was with Viki. I think it was Joanne Dorian in the role.

  9. The dates in soapcentral for early Guiding Light are totally wrong (and they are used in wikipedia too).

For example, Kathy Roberts was said to have been killed off on March 31st 1958 while il happened on February 27th. It was not shown onscreen (she was accidentally pushed by kids into the traffic while on a wheelchair) but Bert called Meta telling her of the accident. Kathy last appeared on February 14th.

Excellent! And, also, thank you for putting your time on this!

No problem ! Last episode of 1971 with Kathy and Scott is 12/30/71. They are in New York, Scott had met Kathy's father. Don't think she is pregnant yet. They are dating but I didn't find any mention of pregnancy so I think for sure Kathy would be pregnant and get her abortion in 1972. It would make more sense.

I'm not sure why you are stating that Kathy on SFT had an abortion in Sept 1970. Kathy was not even on the show until 1971.

Yes, from the scripts I have of SFT, Kathy appeared around mid-1971. She was not even in a relationship with Scott at the fall, slowly flirting so abortion must have happened in 1972, way after AMC's Erica's.

Martha's final on-screen appearance was with Geraldine Whitney, when the two women were discussing Kevin Jamison's and Phoebe Smith's relationship. Then she simply stopped appearing and went unmentioned for several months. Finally, while he was testifying on the witness stand in court, Bill was asked about his relationship with Mike Karr. Bill replied that he, Mike and their wives had been close friends for many years, but that they saw each other much less now, "...since my wife and I moved to the country."

Louise did not simply disappear. She had an official "write out," with the character visiting the Karrs' home and telling Nancy that she was leaving town to be with Phil who had left Monticello for business.

Thanks ! I wish i could find more about the late 60s-early 70s of the show
