I remember reading Tom Shales’s reviews and columns many years ago. A dwindling generation:
Tom Shales, a Pulitzer Prize-winning television critic for The Washington Post who brought incisive and barbed wit to coverage of the small screen, died at a hospital in Fairfax County, Va. He was 79. https://t.co/libqO6gIR0

I legit haven't watched an entire episode of GH in decades, not since Claire Labine left as head scribe. I've seen clips and partial eps here and there, but nothing that satisfied me or made me want to tune back in regularly.
That being said, I've actually sat down and watched the last few episodes (it helped a lot that so many vets were featured prominently).
I'm shocked to admit that I was pleased with today's episode (January 11, 2024), and felt it was an honorable and touching send-off to a beloved actress and character.
And it made me cry. A crusty curmudgeon like me, who hasn't shed a tear over a soap since Maureen Bauer (TGL), and BJ and Stone (GH) died in the 1990s!
Hell has frozen over, LOL!
Good job, GH.
Totally agree and I admit I came in with a lot of skepticism. The way the episode came together was beautifully executed, and the “journalist interview” actually managed to be a smart device. It was like a little self-contained movie. I even teared up when Carly and Felicia found the woman who’d been trafficked. (Talk about making a lot out of a minor character!) Makes you wonder what these people can do with more time, thought, budget, and care, as they managed an episode so powerful even within the limitations of the show.
I do think GH does tributes to its departed performers well. This was better the Sean/John Reilly tribute, which had a similar feel with the self-contained WSB story with Reilly’s real-life daughter. GH employs these personal touches in these tributes that really resonate deeply.
Brighton Hertford looks so much like JZ. She’s beautiful. And a fine actress.
Ryan Carnes really nailed it. He’s the real deal as an actor. I wish they’d find a way to keep him, but then you realize that day-to-day GH is absolutely trash. Love him, but his talents would be wasted.

RIP Bill Hayes. What a star. What a man. What an inspiration. Bill, to the very end, showed up at Days of Our Lives with pride, spirit and a love of craft that never waivered. To lose him at age 98 is way too soon. Condolences to dear Susan, and to us all. #DOOL #Days pic.twitter.com/UNolfqTZdR

RIP Bridget Dobson, who gave us the soap of a lifetime when she created (with hubby Jerry) the deliriously radical #SantaBarbara. True TV royalty (her parents created #GH), Bridget was so ballsy, innovative and freakin’ brilliant that she had no imitators. Nobody even dared try. pic.twitter.com/3h6hq75odf

The best of this genre are leaving us so quickly.
I’m devastated to hear we lost Bridget Dobson. I loved her. She was instrumental in my career and a great friend. A soap icon and a wonderful effervescent person. I don’t have words. My heart is Bridget, I will always be your Princess. Rest well.

I have not seen an official source, but Michele Val Jean posted on Twitter that Bridget Dobson has passed away.
I was just coming here to see what people were saying because I saw someone post it on IG. What a sad loss to start 2024.

I don't think the passing of former Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson was mentioned here. This is a difficult read about how neglected she was in her rehab facility, hastening her death.

Reading that breaks my heart and makes me absolutely furious.

Like Barry Keoghan, he’s kinda jolie laide (pretty/ugly), as the French say. The body is on point, though.

I actually found the scenes between Carly and Drew to be very superficial. The dialogue is terrible and very cliched. Laura Wright is doing a fine job acting what has been given to her, as she always does. But the words she had to say lack character.
I appreciate what they are doing. It doesn’t help that I have been watching tons of older Bobbie stuff and what is discussed in the classic thread. I almost wish we would be left with Laura Wright in silence, feeling her emotions while they showed a couple of flashbacks. Because her acting is great, it’s just the lines that are failing them. But letting something breathe is not Frank’s style.
This is my problem with most of the soaps these days. The dialogue is generic, bland, and dreadful. Agreed on those scenes, especially the relentless ADHD pacing. Why can’t they make exceptions when necessary, even if their “research” shows that modern audiences reach for the remote after so many seconds/minutes? Isn’t this a special enough occasion to break the rule? Frank and team have zero confidence in their viewers.

I just saw the Nikki/Jordan scene and was left feeling underwhelmed, as it all seemed beyond lazy and formulaic. Janice Ferri Esser has watched too way many bad hostage movies and cribbed a lot of that cliché dialogue. The expository scenes at the ranch with the Newmans were kinda mind-numbing.
Nikki’s “drunk acting” was a bit overdone. I really wanted to see the Clash of the Titans, but Nikki bobbing and weaving and slurring ruined that opportunity. And Nikki not grabbing the gun when she knocked Jordan out… my God.
I love CZ, but Jordan is such a sketchily, poorly written character, and her hamminess is very grating. At least with Barbara on ATWT, even though she sometimes went over-the-top during the Sheffer years, she had a substantial backstory to support her performance.
