  1. Yeah, I've seen that one. There are a few clips online too of Jack and Erica during that same period, but I was hoping to eventually find more of Erica and Mike.

Have you tried HamiltonBernique's channel? He has some Erica/Mike in the episodes he's uploaded.

  2. I loved early Gillian. I have a thing for the bad girls and she was fun. I know her pairing with Ryan was really popular but that ruined her for me. She lost her spunk and fire with him as they tried to transition her into more of a heroine instead of a vixen she was or even an anti-heroine. They even had ehr playing the victim role wit big bad David antagonizing her relationship and later Greenlee. Gillian was at her best when she was a bitch and didnt apologize for it. They could have kept her around like that instead of completeling softening her and changing her personality. She got boring as the little stepford wife

I liked the fact that Broderick had come up with something fresh: jaded, sophisticated, uninhibited Eurotrash who was basically decent. In contrast to all the ingenues (and born-again ingenues) roaming town, she was a breath of fresh air... cosmopolitan, multilingual, and a keen observer of and commentator on the behavior of others (Dimitri, Laura, Tad). She was arrestingly honest, funny, and sexy.

Then, McTavish came to town and turned her, overnight, into a refugee from a bad British sex farce: the dippy, foreign bimbo. The worst part was realizing that it was actually the writer's intention to have Ryan be "the smart one" in the relationship.

  3. Random question, but does anyone know if Kate Martin's funeral was Hugh Franklin's (Charles Tyler) last appearance? I was surprised to see him looking at that clip on youtube, because other sites have citied he appeared until only 1983 because of hearing loss, but I assume that's when he just stopped being a regular and might've showed up every now and then?

  4. You never seem to hear as much about the 81 strike as the 88 one--was it shorter? I think AMC was still peaking around then and it probably would have taken much to derail it. I don't think the AMC Family Album mentions the story.

I think they lost some steam in '85 and '86 which is when Babbin, who initially was given so much credit for the hugely popular 1983 season, left or was fired. Broderick also was promoted around that time to co-HW, according to the credits.

I believe Jenny and Opal had come onto the show that summer (summer of 1981). Around that time also was when Nina found out Daisy was her mother and Sean was arrested for the murder of Sybil. As for Nina being an exec, I'm not sure about others, but I thought it would make sense that after being daddy's little girl for so long that she would want something of her own.

Broderick was promoted in 1987. I thought that was a good year for AMC. They reached number one the episode Julie found out about Ross raping Natalie and running away to NY. I thought the Natalie story with Palmer and Ross was pretty good, though I remember Kate Collins saying she thought it was silly that Natalie would hide Silver's body. This was also around the time the Cindy AIDS story started. 1988 is when things became a bit uneven, imo. Palmer and Mr U in jail was the start of a more silly, less ruthless Palmer, I think. I do remember the magazines saying they felt AMC had lost some of it's humor it was known for during Broderick's stint.

  5. Wasn't that when Casey the Alien showed up? In hindsight it seems smart for Monty to try to take the show more back to basics, even if she did it poorly (or so it sounds).

Casey the Alien was before Monty came back, that was Joseph Hardy/Gene Palumbo

  6. In late 1977 Karen was basically let go from the role - she said it was fine with her, as she had asked them to change Tara (mature her, I guess) and they wouldn't.

I think the problem with Jeff and Tara is that they were duplicated by other characters - Jeff by Chuck and to some degree Linc. Tara was fairly unique for AMC in the 70's but they burned through a lot of story with her and someone like Nina, or Donna, who sort of fulfilled the same story purpose, came in. Then by the time story was there which should have brought these characters back, AMC had moved into more glamorous territory.

It also seems like a lot of AMC's roles in the 70's and early 80's were unable to catch on after a popular actor left. It doesn't even seem like they really tried with Jeff (just a few short recasts that went nowhere).

IIRC, didn't Peter Bergman initally try out for a Jeff Martin recast?
