As we can see from the opening credits of this episode, Bill Bell clearly intended that "The Trials & Tribulations of Leslie & Robert" would be his "A-List storyline" for years and years to come.  Leslie and Robert were given the Pole Position in the opening credits, as the show's most important characters.

When the Lawrence storyline ended, Leslie was shuffled off the canvas almost immediately.  And it happened over the course of one or two episodes.  She had a scene with Stuart Brooks where she said, "Dad!  Maestro has organized a concert tour for me."  Stuart said, "Why Les, that's just wonderful!"  And Leslie responded, "Yes, it is, Dad.  Oh, and by the way, I'm leaving in five minutes.  Love ya.  See ya later!  Bye."  And she was out the door and gone.

We can discern from this episode that Y&R had changed a lot during 1982.  The show had repositioned itself entirely.  The storylines that appealed to the audience by late 1982 and early 1983 were (1) the goings-on in the Abbott house, (2) the goings-on with Nikki and Her Men, and (3) -- although it isn't featured in this particular episode -- the adventures of young detectives Paul and Andy.   Plus there was just the right amount of "crossover" in these three distinct storylines, with Paul being the brother of Patty Abbott and also regularly involving himself in Victor's activities, Kay Chancellor running Nikki's life and also interfering in the marriage of John & Jill Abbott, Lauren tempting Paul and taunting Traci, Amy Lewis being Traci's friend and Paul's right-hand woman, etc.  ALL of this was set-up extremely well, and it shows why Y&R was winning the 1983 Emmy and moving higher in the ratings.

The situation with Leslie, Robert, and Claire was just simply superfluous to the "real storylines" of Y&R.  It was disjointed and didn't integrate well within the framework of the show.  Claire's coma seemed hokey and old-fashioned, and this grouping of characters seemed to be "leftovers" from a different time and place.  It just wasn't working.  The Brooks family had outlived their usefulness.   The only thing truly WORKING for the Brooks family was what you see here -- Liz Foster Brooks trying to steer Jill in the right direction (and trying to keep Kay Chancellor sober when Jill started dropping bottles of vodka at Kay's house).

Even though it clearly wasn't his original plan, Bill Bell did the only thing that could work -- dropped all of the Brooks girls one by one off the canvas and retained Liz, who still served a useful purpose in the storyline.

Who played Claire and Robert?  Is the actress Brooke Bundy?  I can't recall the actor's name but I know he was on days.  Y&R was mostly unwatchable in 1982. Awful except for Kay, Nikki and Victor. Took Bell a while to find his footing in the hour long format for that show.

  2. After 8.5 years, it looks like Anna Cascio is out at GH as her last breakdown was on Dec 30.  She started on OLTL in 1999.

Ashley D. Cook has written a few breakdowns since August.  Must be an entry level paid writer, saves money!

Great to see that Sally McDonald returned as Director on Y&R on Jan 26. Even her skill, however, can't rescue Griffith's prozac laden drivel.

  3. I guess nuTaylor's wig isn't drawing viewers in to B&B.

Y&R: just give me a lobotomy now.  If you want to watch library books being re-shelved, please tune into Griffith/Morina's hour of mind numbingly dull as dishwater soap. With honorable mention to nuChance whose on screen baby, Dominic, nails our sentiments exactly about this "actor's" performances every time they are in a scene together.

Days: Ron, Ron, Ron: more juvenile by the day.  Someone should create a mask of Bill Bell or Doug Marland or Agnes Nixon and put it on Ron; it might help.

Kudos to GH for interspersing human drama with vets into the mix of mobsters and non-actors with wax faces, it helped this week.

So who is the director that was difficult to work for? Margaret called him sh!t and so did Liz Hubbard. It had to be a director that was there in 1983/1984. Didn't Lucinda first appear in 1984?

The director also made fun of Margaret during one of her scenes.

The male directors at the time were Paul Lammers, Bruce Barry (who is beloved so I don't think it's him), Richard Dunlap (who didn't direct for long at ATWT so could be the one in question), and Peter Brinkerhoff. Lammers was the principle director at ATWT for years and years.  Allen Fristoe also directed but I believe he also had a great reputation and was not a full time director in the early 1980s.

I spoke to my sources: Josh went fi-core with the WGA during one of the writer's strikes which is why Amanda is listed as the head writer of Y&R. Other than paying dues and receiving union benefits, Josh doesn't exist to the WGA anymore. He is still the official, credited head writer of The Young and the Restless.

Thanks, but this has been widely known since the writer's strike ended.  It's the reason why Michael Conforti (Y&R), Jean Ford and Fran Myers (DOOL) are also not listed among the nominee names. All went fi-core and are ineligible for WGA awards. However, the WGA shouldn't have listed Beall as "head writer." She's co-head writer.  Last year when Y&R won the emmy for writing, Josh thanked her in his short speech and I believe called her "co-head writer"

Robert made a statement on FB

"Thanks to everyone for the sweet posts and messages about my joining the cast of Y&R. I couldn't be more pleased. I've had great respect for the show and it's wonderful cast for many, many years. I'm happy to be a part of it. I had a lovely zoom meeting with Josh Griffith and Anthony Morina last night. We talked quite a bit about the character, and I'm very excited by the scripts I'm getting so far. I'm scared to death, of course, but I think that's healthy. 😎

It'll be a new adventure and I'm feeling pretty blessed to have the opportunity. Cheers!"

Sad to learn Griffith / Morina still there.  That's the biggest  news.

  7. I find it hard to believe that Sony would can Burgi if he was fully vaccinated and boostered. Yes, he violated the protocol but it feels as if this is a drastic measure given that omicrom is sweeping the nation and it's mild for most.  I wonder if this was Sony's opportunity to cut an unvaccinated cast member. Remember: Nancy Lee Grahn swore on Twitter that other shows are harboring the unvaxx actors, yet no one was fired from the three other shows as were Steve and Ingo.  Burgi may be in that group.

  8. Jill Phelps is glued to Variety.com, wondering if she can come out of her much heralded retirement.  There's no hope for Y&R even if Morina and Griffith are removed. CBS and Sony have systematically destroyed the show with each hire starting in 2006 with Latham.  Who knew that Maria Bell's 4 year era was the last that preserved at least some of the classic elements of the Bell/Alden era.

YES!!! I just assumed I missed something and they had a doctor come in and extubate him during the commercial break. 😂

Also, speaking of Jan, today they said that Shawn was taking her to Statesville. So, unless she ends up pregnant, I have no idea what the point of this little plot was.

The respirator was taken off contract so they could pay for the Horton tree fire special effects!  Days' budget is so tight they couldn't afford Xmas lights on Julie's tree!

  10. Carlivati and Giddens are both retweeting twitter nobody fans' praise of the show and the possession episodes, in particular. Desperate. They both know that the show is the laughing stock of the television industry.  The only good part of the story happened in the first week with Doug's possession. Once he was institutionalized the rest of it has to be given an award for one of Ron's worst Days stories in 4.5 years. And it has a lot of competition.

Here's the 28th anniversary party in 1984...and they'd be canceled before the year was out.

I don't believe these photos were from April 1984. Henry Slesar was fired in March 1983; he would not have been in attendance at the 1984 celebration, and unlikely he would have attended an April 1983 celebration since he had just been fired).  Lee Sheldon was head writer.  This may have been 1982 or earlier.

  12. Can't act and has no chemistry with Ordway who also can't act.  He is hot and does remind me of the original Philip who also never learned how to act. I was always stumped that Bill Bell retained the original "actor" in such a pivotal role and never recast with a powerhouse performer.  There was so much more they could have done with Phillip.

Morina/Griffith are a match made in total mediocrity.
