Maybe there’s an argument that no character/family should truly be the center of an ongoing show. Maybe the true center is the fictional town and show itself, and characters just come in and out regardless of their last name?
Deidre Hall left the show in the late 80’s and then was fired in 2009 - the show went on during both eras.
If I wanted to watch a bunch of randos, I'd watch a primetime show. One of the two main appeals of soaps for me is the familial connections and the generational legacy. That type of long term storytelling takes decades and can't be replicated by primetime.

Are we talking deranged fans, and can we call out specific fanbases? Because I think the Days fans who whine about there not being enough Hortons are a special kind of crazy.
I think it's natural for a show's true base to want to see the original (or close to it) core family thrive. Felt that way about the Bauers on GL, advocated for them until the bitter end. I would've settled for Jeffrey to be a Bauer if it meant an increased focus.

I don´t think bringing him back in 2009 was a bad idea. My bone of contention was spending nearly nine months on a murder mystery in 2004-2005 where it turns out that the character was never dead to begin with and the character wasn´t coming back was a waste of time and energy. I liked Harley, but that story did me in. The trial, the prison stint, the GusH on the run... it was too much
There was practically no redeeming value for the Conboy/Weston era. Yes, the lighting improved but the show didn't look like itself. I could go on about the era's faults but we all know them.

The point was to give other players some time on the front burner. Typically the front burner was used up by Reva & by Phillip. Personally I thought it was great that Grant did it & also that it was temp & not perm. And probably as an actor he worked on something else while he was gone. Actors like that. And, jobs on soaps used to afford that kind of variety to the hired help.
It's silly to have an "off-screen" Phillip being an elusive boogey-man. It's bad storytelling. Let other players share the spotlight, but that story was weak. They never should've revealed Phillip was alive until they were able to show him on-screen- it was so stupid. Show, don't tell.

You remember the speculation that Stuart Damon was being considered as an Ed Bauer recast? I would've liked to see Mart return in the role as that tied into GL's past.
Absolutely. If they couldn't have gotten GA back, they should've made a call to John Bolger.
5 hours ago, Khan said:I said the same thing as the storyline was playing out. If GA was not interested in returning, I said, then recast Phillip, so there would be a point to the "Who Killed Phillip?" storyline. I also said he even could return using a different name, like Scott Marler ("Scott," for Jackie; "Marler," for Justin), to illustrate how repentant he felt about the way he had treated all his loved ones before he was "killed" and that he wanted to clean the proverbial slate. Not an ideal situation, mind you, but at least there would have been a purpose to "killing" him off.

Nina is obviously only reporting the crime because she has a personal "agenda," that's the soapy angle.

Scott Holroyd was so wooden as Paul, RH breathed life into the role with the appropriate scene-chewing and spirit that an offspring of Steinbeck and babs should have.

Yes, Nola sold them Company after the final time that Meals and Wheels burned down.

I am always confused with GL sets. Ross's house was supposed to be the same place Ben and Amanda stayed?
Alan and Hope got a new house while they were married. Was it the old Wexler house?
Were the Cooper supposed to be living in the Reardon house in the later years?

Just curious, do you hate the guiding light? That was my favorite of all time, you keep dissing it repeatedly. Why not knock some other show? You keep rubbing it in that GL never was number one, over and over again to knock it to us that GL was NEVER popular and its not cool.
Plus Y&R was always the boring soap, had such a great time slot tho, my dad would watch it at dinner time. Why abc never moved amc there in the 80s to plug up 12:30, i'll never know.

IIRC it was because of the Patty storyline that they chose Paul over Brad.

AW/ATWT/GL
Cass and Felicia. At first i was thinking that they would be perfect for GL as AW and GL seemed like the most similar shows to each other in tone and feel. Of course Cass DID crossover to both ATWT and GL but he was a much more mature character opposed to hos cross-dressing, hiding from mobsters hijinks from the 80s. I couldn't see Felicia Gallant and Reva existing comfortably on the same show. But with ATWT and AW, Felicia and Lisa were both restautant operators.
GH/GL.
I could see gh's felicia and frisco on gl and gl's beth and lujack on gh. Felicia and frisco fitting into the shenanigan adventure scene that gl somewhat neglected after quint/nola. Beth/lujack fitting into young love on the run and supercouple territory that gh excelled at for a long time.
OLTL/GL
On a similar note, OLTL'S Tina and Cord would've been a perfect fit for GL.
DAYS/ATWT
Victor Kiriakis. ATWT could've used a strong (shady) rival to Lucinda in the business world.

Guiding Light. The double whammy of Richard/Cassie and Danny/Michelle. Also remember that the Island stuff and the mob stuff was taking over simultaneously. I still remember the forum wars beyween RASSIE/MANNY fans against the "old-timers." Plus those two couples added on top of Josh/Reva.
In 2002 Cullitom/McTaggart were celebrated by us longtime fans for ending both couples, and making GL start to feel like GL again. Unfortunately, Conboy/Weston would cave in to both fanbases in 2003.

Bill Bell recast Y&R Ashley twice (1988 and 1996) and in hindsight, neither worked. Can we think of anyone who would have worked in either 1988 or 1996?
Karen Witter. I liked her Tina Lord almost as much as Andrea Evans. Most a yone would've been better than Mrs Ron Moss.

Amy Vining. They should've gave her a couple of plots instead of just being a "talk to."

The oft mentioned but never seen mrs martinez could've been used tp introduce a hispanic family. Utilized in a similar was as Mamie was back in the day.

Nick/Sharon. They've been apart way too long. Personally I think the character of Nick has run its course and should leave town for a bit. That won't happen, but it should.

Paul Holtoyd was so stiff and wooden, no passion. The best soap acting is passionate, over-the-top and often scenery chewing.
