2/15/93 LOV rating is 3.4 (not 3.6) (which confirms the SOW misprint, since there is no tie* listed)

GH is just doing terribly now. Why is DAYS so low?

ABC is not going to want to pay a licensing fee for B&B, a soap they have no ownership in.

    That is true.

Maybe the Bells would sell a stake. WHat people fail to see is business always changes. And I was just laughed at not by you. SO you know what I am respectfully leaving. P&G back in the soap business?  Business it is all about making money, selling products and goods and selling ads.

lol not going to happen at all. ABC has 1 soap for a reason, a soap that's hanging on by it's toe nails at this point

Anything is possible with Disney/ABC, to say that it is not going to happen at all is naive from a business perspective. Did anyone think CBS would do what they did ? Most would have said no. ABC owns GH - big difference. I bet it still makes money for Disney. If it didnt do you think Iger would still have it on the air.

CBS is willing to take a business risk. So Iger and Disney/ABC would not take a risk if B&B became available? Or revive a soap? Iger had gone on record that ABC and the Disney streaming platforms need more content. It is all about the money.

You may be right. But the Bells own B&B and they can move it anywhere if CBS decides to not renew.

  4. I am happy about this new creation of a soap opera. I am very confident in MVJ's abilities. CBS is very smart to do this.  I think the new show will be very successful.

As for what happens to B&B, it will likely stay on CBS. I do not see the Bells selling their interest in Restless to anyone. Even if CBS dumped B&B, do not be suprised if ABC gets B&B or Amazon or Netflix picks it up. Iger at Disney/ABC needs and wants content for ABC and/or Hulu/Disney +. Amazon and Netflix need contant as well.

Talk shows, news and reality programs in daytime have run their course.  Talk shows and news programs like ABC airs in the daytime are marginally profitable.

I would not be surprised if this new development causes Disney/ABC to ponder revivals of AMC and OLTL in 30 minutes formats and placement on broadcast ABC and Disney's streaming platforms. Besides the View, ABC Daytime needs an infusion of new content and energy.

This development is good for the soap opera format and genre.

General Hospital really slumping for ABC. All My Children a solid Number 2 but way behind Restless. Besides AMC, ABC is slumping.

Holly said why she didn't attend in her book.

    It's been a couple days.

Not verifiable. But regardless, this is all just another attempt by one blocked troll (not JoeCool) to stir up drama by grabbing at any hot button topic or controversial actor they can. They go from thread to thread hoping people will bite.

Thanks. I won’t bite. As to the verifiably of what I said, let’s just say I have heard it from people who were around in 1994 and connected to Holly and Hayman. There was not a lot goodwill or condolences sent. And that is all I can and will say on the matter. I am not discussing what the other commenter wrote.

    Thank you @Vee

I was not referring to Ellen's book. I was referring to Jeff Giles' book in which Ellen was quoted as saying that at OLTL's 15th Anniversary party in July 1983, Erika Slezak said to Agnes Nixon to get those 2 black (swear word redacted) out of my face, referring to Ellen and Lillian Hayman.

In Jeff Giles' book, Erika claims that never happened. I believe Erika. That is what I was referring to when I said that I think Ellen lied. Anyone who knows Erika would never believe that she would say such a thing and it was vehemently denied by Erika in many pargraphs.

And as an aside, Ellen said that overnight after that party, Jean Arley was gone and Paul Rauch was in. Wrong! Paul Rauch didn't arrive until a year later.

RIP Ellen Holly but don't tell lies about my Erika Slezak!

I know about that alleged incident. Someone can deny anything vehemently and it still can be true. Both Lillian Hayman and Ellen Holly allegedly heard the comment. Hayman and Holly refused to attend the 20th and 25th party after numerous directors network people and even Agnes Nixon’s calls. They both refused. I wonder why.  Does anyone see Slezak saying anything about Ellen’s death? She did for Andrea Evans. When Hayman died only Ellen showed up at the funeral. No one attended from ABC or the show.  Not a card or a basket or flowers. No one said anything publicly . Not Agnes. Not Slezak. I wonder why. Ellen was very close to Lillian and gave the eulogy.

Ellen Holly and Lillian Hayman were wonderful human beings and actresses. RIP Ellen and Lillian.

No one knows the truth. It does not really matter anymore.

I will never ever believe that Erika Slezak said those words that Ellen Holly claims. Sad that Ellen’s gone, but she did lie about Erika Slezak.

Don't presume Ellen is lying. I don't. Ellen would have more to lose than Erika would. I read Ellen's book. It does not matter. Calling a woman who is dead less than a week a liar is really unseemly. RIP Ellen Holly. At least she does not have to put up with garbage anymore.

We all point to OJ as the beginning of the end but with all the ratings data we have now, it seems as though the real issues began in the late 1980s. I say it was the combination of Iran-Contra, Nielsen people meters, and 1988 writer's strike that started everything that culminated in the aftermath of OJ.

I agree but I also think the rapid expansion of cable TV in the late 80s and early 90s contributed to the softening of the soap's ratings. There was so much more to choose from as compared to just the 3 networks and a handful of other stations.

As long as LOVING's clearances remained solid, ABC appeared willing to stick it out with them.  But, once those affiliates began to give up on the show, so, too, did the network.

That is right. ABC owned Loving and it probably made ABC some money but once the affiliates started to lose money and complain, Loving was iced.

Natalie is in the well now.

Bttw, another unpopular story playing during the brief drop was Emily Ann going insane, faking a pregnancy with Joey ('Jake'),  and drugging Katie Kennicktt (attempting to murder her).

AMC came within .3 of Y&R a couple times in early 1993 (Tad and Dixie).

Yes the Emily Ann saga was awful!!! Turned off the audience.

Lots of movement except for the bookends. Days and AMC have made quite the return.

You can see Agnes Nixon's reset and cleaning up of AMC in the late spring/early summer 1991 is taking effect and the ratings are improving drastically.

I think it could have worked, had they done a better job of casting Charlie.  But it seems like they never knew how to cast that particular role.  Josh Hamilton came the closest on nailing the part, but his stint was just for Grandma Kate's funeral, IIRC.  I don't believe he had any intention of staying indefinitely.

Besides, even as I was watching that particular story unfold, I never thought that they were supposed to be a long-term pairing.  To me, Charlie seemed more like a distraction for Erica to keep her busy until the next time she and Jack would hook up.  (AMC tried their best, but they never sold me on Jack and Erica, lol).

I thought the incest storyline with Ceara was pretty good - at least on paper.  In that case, Felicia Minei Behr managed to cast two fine actors (Bethel Leslie and Stephen Joyce) to play her folks.  But it also was clear that the story was an attempt to redeem Ceara (and make her and Jeremy a more palatable couple) and write more to Genie Francis's strengths, as I think GF has always had a tough time portraying vixens and villainesses.  And I know Genie herself has always been proud of her work in that storyline, but I, for one, thought her performance, especially in the story's climax, was pitched all wrong and was probably her worst stuff as an actress (or, it was, before she joined Y&R).

The Ceara and Jeremy storyline was horrible...the actors had no chemistry and the incest storyline was forced and not really necessary for the character or the show. GF's performances were ok to erratic. I just think it turned the audience off. Erica and Charlie were laughable as I said. The story was awful and it was a terrible distraction even for Erica.  Very bad stories pushed AMC down and Agnes Nixon saw this and reset and cleaned it up because after Labor Day AMC was Number 2.

I know "The Second Coming of Gloria (Monty)" hadn't worked out at GH like they had hoped; and I know, too, Paul Rauch had run out of steam at OLTL, which was on the verge of being taken over by Linda Gottlieb if it hadn't already; but what the heck was going on at AMC?  I'm racking my brains trying to figure out what could've happened for them to drop that far.  Had Michael E. Knight just left the show?

Oh yes AMC to Number 7. Agnes Nixon did a reset that summer of 1991. The audience disliked Erica and Charlie storyline immensely. The Ceara abuse storyline was not well thought out. Brooke was out of control. AMC was awful trust me. I stopped watching and went back after Labor Day and it was much better. Honestly, the Erica and Charlie thing was laughable and viewers left.

All My Children begins to move into Number 2 now and GH begins its descent to Number 3. OLTL contiunes to drop. SUmmer 1991 will show ATWT getting stronger as well as DAYS...AMC will flounder and hit Number 7 but by August AMC is back to Number 3 and then starting in September begins to solidify Number 2. GH will drop in the fall of 1991.

AMC did another "reset" in the summer of 1991. Agnes Nixon made quick changes in the storylines and adjusted plots and it all became together in the fall of 1991.

    OLTL will drop as well.

    Restless very strong.

I don't doubt much of what you said, but I still hope to keep my Hulu+Live TV. I have hundreds of episodes of the soaps on my On Demand DVR that I have yet to watch and I'd hate to lose them all in the name of branding. Sigh.

Good riddance to ESPN. I've hated the decision to move Monday Night Football to that channel for nearly 20 years. Only now are they realizing the value it can bring to broadcast, hence why games are now simulcast on ABC again. Loved the opening theme for that show back in the 90s. "Are you ready for some Football? A Monday night party" or something like that.

I do not think you will lose your DVR. Everything should be integrated so hopefully it will work out.

It sounds like they are weighing all options for finding money to get all of Hulu in their wheelhouse. Since Disney+Hot Star is mentioned, I wouldn't be surprised if the integrated Disney+/Hulu app they are releasing next month in beta form will eventually become Disney+Hulu, formally giving the latter platform its first steps toward a global audience. Still hope they keep Hulu as a separate App, particularly for those of us who get our cable-esque access via Hulu+Live TV.

Could care less about ESPN. The sooner they stop forcing people to pay the bulk of their cable bill toward that channel, the better.

Hulu will merge with Disney +. Everything will be integrated with Disney +.  ESPN app will stay separate.

ESPN will eventually go all streaming and will not be available on cable at all. Disney will make much money that way and then people who dont want ESPN will no longer get it and have to pay for ESPN channels they don't want.
