You're 100% right about International viewers not just solely being about Europe or Western countries. I only focused on them due to CBS owning stations and having the ability to receive Paramount+. Plus I would assume European and Western countries would have more money thus potentially be able to make them more money. Sorry but I don't think you get international viewership at all. CBS is already airing their current shows now often hours or days after the US airing and that includes the soaps. They aren't waiting to see if they are proven hits, they are airing their content immediately because if they wait there is a great chance it ends up being pirated. Plus due to the expense of creating new content most other countries are scaling back their own productions and buying US shows is cheaper than creating their own.

Yes, you're right and I agree with you. It was made to capitalize on a neglected demographic, the AA audience and garner ad dollars. I just don't believe, because no evidence has been supplied to my knowledge, that there is enough ad dollars to support this project and that CBS is greatly over estimating the appeal and AA viewers. Has there been any reports or surveys that have been publically released to back up all this anecdotal evidence? I don't have an agenda that is just my personal belief. Either way we'll see how it plays out in a couple of months. I definitely think CBS is looking at the international market. They own tv stations in Australia and the UK and they have Paramount+ which is a built in nexus to many other countries. CBS has seen how well BB does around the world (It still airs in many countries and when I researched a couple of months ago it was probably the one soap that had the best foreign international sales figures) and they don't see any of that money. CBS/Paramount+ as a brand is struggling right now and owning another show which they can directly profit off would be beneficial. Just to clarify I would love BTG to do well and thrive and show that the genre is still worth investing in with great uptapped potential I just don't think this one project is going to be viable for lots of reasons least of which is the casting. No focusing on any minority and marketing it solely towards any one group and discounting all other demographics is just a risky business decision. If BTG was about middle aged white women in Florida I'd still voice my reservations.

Probably for the best given they tape soon and you don't want much lag time time like DooL and the Body & Soul mess. Plus The Talk is off in December so they probably want to keep momentum and not let the audience drift away too much. Still I hope their aren't antics like the Insurrection or media controversies surrounding the Inauguration that creates preemptions.

Maybe for America but if CBS wants international or maximum national dollars catering a show to a minority that is prevalent in one country is not a great business decision. On the TV side I don't think Tyler Perry shows have done very well internationally at all or really even nationally if we're being honest. Empire was big in America for a couple of years but fizzled soon after and was never popular overseas. Bipoc movies that have tended to do well either have a list talent (Bad Boys) or are part of a franchise or universe (Black Panther). Us did very well domestically but not nearly so well internationally. West Side Story 2021 had topical subject matter with a diverse cast and bombed. Let's not talk about The Book of Clarence or The Woman King either. Shonda never said Greys Anatomy is a AA show though. She made a point of inclusivity and made sure the BIPOC characters were not tokenistic and central to the plot. She also let the writing and stories speak for themselves whilst catering to a broad demographic she didn't alienate. Her niche shows like Bridgerton didn't have to compete on broadcast either. Are you? What do people want in a soap then, a documentary of real life? If you're trying to say presently the writing is weak and insipid on most soaps then I agree with you. The ratings get mentioned because it's relevant. Comes across fake as hell, well it is in a fake as hell fictional setting. We already live in a world when most viewers cannot separate actors and their political affiliation and either personally cancel them or take their beefs on social media and message boards. Can you imagine if they made Nikki Newman a Trumper or said who she voted for in the election? It would create a shitstorm because either way someone would invariably get offended and something which advertisers would not be happy about. Maybe the reason why the surviving soaps are so milquetoast is because the audience can't handle the boat being rocked and the advertisers are more skittish than ever before.

I was just thinking if it's going to be surrounding BB or YR or where it's placed in the schedule by affiliates and with CBS wanting some of the other soap viewers to sample the show deliberately adding real life events on top of an already progressive show might be one step too far. At least with a fictional character being gay it's a story so might to some people be easier to accept. No you're right they are certainly sending a message that it isn't going to be a conservative show or one where their sensibilities are going to be cared about but sadly when have conservatives complained or boycotted a show they have actually watched. As crazy as it sounds though drug abuse, sexual harassment in a fictional setting can be escapist in the form of high drama and creating stories so you care about the characters. I just think the outlines and descriptions are meant to say it isn't going to be plodding or anything like the other soaps. I could be wrong too.

Wasn't even talking to you originally so why you felt the need to unnecessary insert yourself with attitude is beyond me. BB & Y&R debuted decades ago in a different media landscape. Back then it probably wouldn't have mattered when it started airing given the healthy viewership and lack of choices. No you implied passive aggressively. So because you think I had attitude or was a know it all that then gives you the right to act smug, condescending and pissy at me. If you don't like my tone or have a problem you could have PM and let me know. Of course professionals can never be wrong. It's great CBS is going to give a marketing push and pump money into a soap, that's what they need to and it would be poor business decision if they didn't. I don't get why you think I'm saying CBS is lying. I never called or implied they lied about anything. I just don't think they've made some smart choices. Which is my opinion.

Can you be any more patronising. I am fully aware that CBS does not own or produce the Bell soaps. Yes the seasons are a CBS thing, BTG is going to be on CBS hence why from a business synergy point it would have made more sense to debut it in line with their other shows. It has nothing with me being an over zealous impatient fan. Reach much. Yes I know historically, take notice of that word, they premiered at different points of the year in the past, when there was more viewers and less choices. Premiering a new soap amidst a massive political campaign, sport preemptions and going into warmer weather and other things doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Honestly it seems more like desperate fans clinging to the notion that CBS is infallible and are beyond reproach and know exactly what they are doing when every evidence available in multiple areas says otherwise. Why are you talking about Network or cable. Is BTG on cable or a primetime show? Hardly any soap has premiered in September so it isn't an out of date notion at all. It was merely a suggestion to get as many eyeballs watching at the most opportune time. To think they cannot dictate or have some say in decisions regarding B&B or Y&R, especially as they are paying a licensing fee is absurd. It's airing on their company of course they have some sway, just not enough and they don't generate an income from it other than ads. Up until recently they probably haven't had too much of a concern with Brad anyway. Besides they can just use him to save money on the licensing fee by claiming reduced ratings. Of course they want BTG to do well, just like all the other shows they green light. Many fail and that's even with CBS thinking they know what to commission and where to schedule. BB will just move to streaming I'd imagine. My whole point is that they should have launched a new soap years ago when ratings were better and the genre not so anemic. That's the point I was trying to make in some other responses, rather than the date of announcement this year. It seems very late in the day to launch a brand new soap when they don't seem particularly concerned about the state of their other soaps, which are bleeding viewers and demos annually at an increased rate. Touching upon or adding politics to a show is going to be its death. Alienating large amounts of viewers over politics seems reckless and suicidal. Don't most viewers want fictional drama and escapism away from reality anyway?

Do they though? So they have intentionally run Bold & Y&R into the ground then? I don't believe CBS/Paramount has a clue at all. Case in point, the albatross that is Paramount+. Yes CBS has a lot invested in this which is why I expected them to have made smarter decisions. As for a synergy perspective it would have also made more sense to premier BTG when Bold & Y&R now view their seasons as starting.

BTG: History, Behind the Scenes Articles & Photos
Which ordinarily I think would be okay but given the election fervour I don't think it was a smart decision to delay the premier deep into the tv season. No I get pre production would be rushed though what I'm saying is they should have made the decision to end the talk in the 23-24 season and have BTG premier September. Basically their thinking is a little out of date and long term planning needed to be better.

Neighbours: Discussion Thread
Agree about the rushed redemption and especially Jane's reaction. I can see her being lonely and upset over Mike but still. Yes Felix would have been perfect for that 30s role. Not sure about a 60s male though. You have Eirini Rising and those recurring residents which for me is enough. I get Paul feels tired at times (seriously yet another long drawn out Terese chase) but I'll always love him and the actor just makes things work. He's someone I probably won't ever get sick of like Terese & Jane. I've only ever tolerated Leo as he was the lesser of two evils compared to that creature David. It's clear Leo is only around because they couldn't get any of Paul's other kids to come back full time. He's such a non entity most of the time. I don't mind another twentysomething if I'm honest. The share house needs another occupant but I hope they get more development and screentime than Sadie. I just wish they would give Nic a friend, someone who'll be in her corner and not judge her over the slightest of things. Definitely agree about Holly. The poor girl needs a cold shower and some rest. I wouldn't be shocked if she tries something with Felix before he leaves either.

Neighbours: Discussion Thread
Thanks I figured as much when I read the spoilers and didn't see him mentioned. What a shame as, like you said, he had a lot of potential not to mention a realistic reason for staying around. It sort of makes his second stint rather pointless then. Why bother even bringing him back at all if the potential is just going to be squandered? I like Victor well enough but if he left tomorrow it wouldn't bother me. He seems too sleazy (even if he claims redemption) and reminds me of a bootleg Paul. I don't mind the guest character format usually but when the guest characters have depth and are likable and aren't sticking around it can get a little frustrating. I know we're getting more regulars but the cast still feels too small. Felix would have made a great replacement for Toadie.

I don't think it would be wise to leave the heavy promotion so late. At best it would have a couple of weeks after the election and I don't think that would be enough to get all the attention and interest it would need. They really need to start to ramp up the promotion soon. It's nice to hear casting news but unless there are any A listers waiting in the wings, casting news is largely irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. TBH CBS hasn't done themselves any favours by their scheduling. Ideally BTG should have premiered in September because as you said any major news or attention is going to be lost most likely.

Neighbours: Discussion Thread
I still love Neighbours, but 2022 was near perfection. The reboot has had a lot of problems (Stories constantly being discussed that happened off camera, Terese/Toadie, Nicolette fancying a man, Sam, Ruining Wendy, Toadie's whole departure) but the negatives haven't outweighed the positives. I know a lot of people can't stand Holly but I've always loved her and find her PTSD story compelling. Nice to see Felix helping her too. Is Felix staying around? I did think it was pretty selfish of Cara to be moaning about money and the course Dex wants to do at Uni yet want another child. Focus on the kids you do have Cara.

Are you counting only American ones or international as well? I think it's pretty obvious Bold is in jeopardy. 1) It's a half hour soap, which means less money from advertisers to CBS 2) It isn't owned by CBS. Why keep negotiating a license fee on a diminishing product where you don't see a bulk profit? 3) It was only granted an extra season option in their recent contract renewal rather than a lengthy multi year renewal. It seems like it was only done to buy CBS some thinking time, no doubt due to the news. 4) Unfortunately just because it does well internationally (or did well according to some posters in European countries) doesn't mean anything to CBS if they don't see any money coming in from said deals. Unless you get what the Australian soaps get, another country funding or co funding production costs then the international market is rather irrelevant. Given that ABC owns General Hospital outright, I'm betting GH will be the last one standing.

No it was specifically stated they wanted Neighbours for their lead into news as 5PM. Which does make sense as when the Neighbours finale aired on the main network it did fantastic numbers.

I loved watching the 2022 season so I am looking forward to the new season despite no Nicolette or Amy, my two favourite characters.

Shortland Street
I gave up on this show last year when Cece found out about Tk's affair and nothing happened. It was like ah well no biggie. WTF? Where's the tension or drama. Such a let down. I did return for the season finale to see the hospital burn down and for everyone to get displaced only for everyone to break their contracts with their new hospitals and return to Shortland Street five episodes later and the hospital was exactly the same except for a new desk and design scheme 🙄. Then it was the never ending love triangle between Marty/Monique/Esther that just would not end. Same with Madonna and Villi. Not to mention I think Samira got four exits and TK/Dawn seemed to quit, come back, quit come back every other month. FFS just leave and stay gone. I still don't believe Dawn is gone, unless they shoved a stick of dynamite up her cooter. Horrid character, only bested by the loathsome Desi. The writing was so sub par. Madonna is just an unlikable bitch. She moans about Christian values to no end then leaves a man to die in a fire as revenge for ripping her off, lies about not sleeping with Villi yet she wanders around the hospital with her knickers around her ankle, outs Jojo's abortion in front of everyone and emotionally manipulates to get the DoN gig. Then I read the character is basically a propaganda piece by the NZ government to get more ethnic minorities into nursing, which even became a storyline. Then there was the Chris is a sex pest abusing his position and was a racist from way back. Yet TK also slept with his juniors, helped a murderer and continually screams at females but all that behaviour is overlooked. The feud between Chris and TK also just fizzled into nothingness. Every straight white male guest character seemed to either be racist, homophobic or sexist, usually all three. Where's the nuance? It was like all the fun, interesting and quirkyness was sucked out and only the absurd and ripped from the headline content was left in. It became so preachy with its endless lecturing and clunky stereotypes. The constant Maori language also didn't help, especially when subtitles weren't included. It was the most annoying thing when characters would start a conversation in English, then speak Maori, then English, then Maori. I did read that South Pacific Pictures commissioned a report to extoll the value of SS to the NZ economy and arts which usually only gets down when a show is in trouble. Another article mentioned that SS has experienced steady ratings decline in NZ and the Australian channel cancelled the show after only two seasons which was on the fifth rated network. TBH I wouldn't be surprised if SS in dire straits as it's been truly awful and nothing that I've read reads very promising regarding the latest storylines.

B&B August 2023 Discussion Thread
Though 10 is bumping it from its timeslot for the return of Neighbours to an earlier slot. They have also been screwing around with its repeat airings in the mornings in the last year. @boldau do you have the figures from last year to compare? Still the ratings seem decent and I'm sure 10 has bigger issues to worry about like how their primetime is a mess and how the network is consistently fourth in the ratings.

Neighbours: Discussion Thread
Is anyone watching this? Really had enough of Amy's polyamory story. It keeps going and going and has successfully managed to ruin both Ned and Amy as characters. Hopefully Amy's daughter arriving can reinvigorate her character. Love Nicolette and her being a worthy adversary for Paul. Would really love it though if they could start and give her storylines that don't involve the boring Boo's. Terese turning back to alcohol has been well done. I can't help but love bitchy Harlow and thought Roxy was more than a little mean to callously exclude her from her wedding party like that.
