It's funny to characterize Julia as filling a family void, although I understand what you mean.  When Susan left, Sally was going through her adolescent rebellion and tried to triangulate Susan and Alice.  But, by the time Julia showed up, Sally was in her full ingénue era. So, I guess Liz needed someone to fret over.

Exactly. Kyra Sedgwick arrived as a bit of a wild child which did seem a bit reminiscent of Sally post-Boston. Was Sally already reformed by then? I guess Jennifer Runyon wasn't committing crimes, just marrying Hobsons and feeling like Steve wasn't as protective of her as he was of Diana.

Did Julia and Sally interact much when Kyra Sedgwick and Jennifer Runyon were in the roles?

Julia was a complete retcon.  She was never mentioned on AW until shortly before she started appearing.

Thanks for the confirmation. If Dan and Susan reconciled in 1979 and then adopted her without discussion offscreen I suppose she could have been SORASed to 17 by 1982. It's not so very different from the timeline for Sally to get pregnant and give up Kevin in order for him to show up as a 5- or 6-year old child in 1983.

Troy Hall (with his frosted tips) is probably just happy to remembered at all, regardless of his moves, given the noxious character of Tito that he played.

I would have liked to see Tito redeemed just enough so that Paulina would have kept him as a quasi foster son despite his bad behaviour. Nick had put his nasty ways behind him so Tito could have been a jerk and a screwup with just enough of a real emotional attachment to Paulina to make it interesting.

I've been looking at episodes of As the World Turns where they still had a thriving population of children, many of whom grew up to have quasi adult storylines. There was a period in the early 80s where Another World had a lot of little kids around who had been born on the show and it’s too bad that really only Amanda and Matthew and Maggie (and I guess I should count Nancy) from that generation grew up.

I have a question about Julia Shearer. According to the AWHP, Dan and Susan adopted her at the age of 10. She first appeared at age 17 in 1982 played by Kyra Sedgwick. Prior to that Susan had last been in Bay City in 1979 divorcing Dan. Was Julia talked about prior to 1982 or was the adoption a retcon in order to fill in a family void?

The song is really not about the lyrics.

If you put lyrics in your song I *will* notice them and they *will* affect my enjoyment of it. I'm delighted for those who enjoy the lyrics or who can ignore them, but please allow me to appreciate entertainment in my own way. As Judge John Hodgman would say, people like what they like.

@AbcNbc247 That is the funniest promo ever!

It feels like an SNL-Stefon sketch, "Bay City's hottest club had got everything, boxers on roller skates, politicians dancing with no rhythm, and a dude in a shirtless hoodie staring directly into your soul..."

Mark Mortimer is the only one who does not look uncomfortable to be dancing. A lot of them don't even seem to bother to dance (or their dancing got left on the cutting room floor). But look, there is also basketball and boxing and soccer!

I didn’t like or believe that Rachel would actually leave Mac for Mitch, especially after everything they had been through the year before

I feel like I have seen a couple of scenes with Mitch and Rachel together where they seem very hip and artistic and compatible that would make the relationship make sense if it had not been for the Janice storyline that went before. I went looking through the AWHP synopses to see if I could pinpoint dates in order to look for youtube videos for examples, and I was brought up short by several references to "Ma Davis' cabin" where amnesiac Mitch is supposed to be recuperating. It is not clear to me how far away Mitch is supposed to be (Rachel has a map and winds up borrowing a jeep? There is a mention of Red River?) but is Ma Davis supposed to have something to do with Rachel or is it a bizarre coincidence?

You are the rain when my spirits run dry (isn't raining on a parade a bad thing?)

I have never found the lyrics interesting or inspiring, but I will quibble with you here and point out that there is no parade to spoil here -- her spirits are utterly parched and rain is absolutely necessary.  It is vital to stay hydrated!

Was the Alma Rudder lunacy before or after Steve Frame returned?

Steve returned in October 1981 and Alma showed up in June 1982. Steve died (and Rachel was blinded) in February 1983 and Alma was murdered in May 1983. So Steve was still alive and around when the torment of Blaine started.

Question for anyone who knows & who will reply. Is this episode up on YT? I have a collection of clips showing recast reveals & stunts & I'd like to add this one.

Probably at about 38 minutes in on this episode. The scene cuts from Mac and Alice dancing holding a white rose to "Edward Black"'s silhouette as he holds a white rose.

I know some people have a fondness for this opening/theme, and obviously JFP’s follow-up opening alienated some folks, but how the hell did this opening last until 1996? Such 80’s cheese that was long out of style by this point.

What is the cost/benefit in changing it though? If your brand is not cutting edge, maybe keeping the existing opening has more value because it appeals to the demographic you have. It's not as if Crystal Gayle was particularly in style in 1987.

I don't specifically recall him saying he took her favorite seat, LOL, but I do remember him spinning a tall tale about how she was so intent on making herself seen by the public.

It's somehow worse than that -- I just looked it up and he entirely absolves himself of taking her seat intentionally ("I had apparently appropriated the wall seat she usually occupied"), but sneers at Dwyer both for his assumption that she would have preferred his seat in order to let her public gaze upon her but also for his idea that she was more than consoled by the fact that the seat she got allowed her to gaze at her reflection in a mirror. He mocks her to the reader for graciously signing autographs for fans before she arrives at the table, for bringing fan mail to show him how popular she is with the audience, for drinking sherry, for claiming that she understood her character and her fans' appreciation of her, and for daring to disagree with his assessment that the character was unrealistic. Then he insults her to her face by telling her she is an inexperienced actress and makes up his mind to write Mary out.

I didn't witness a lot of these AW events at the time, and I have not watched my family's tapes in a very long time (my family was an early VHS adopter so they have tapes from the early 80's).

I recently started worrying about not having access to the VHS format so I have been making an effort to transfer VHS to DVD since that was the easiest first step for me. Most of my tapes were in good condition although there was the occasional failure.

I don't have anything before probably 1987. I know youtube has a lot of 1980 but there isn't much of 1982 to at least 1984 as far as I can see and there is a lot of 1983 that I keep hoping will show up.

That's also where I first saw Richard.

Jamie Lee Curtis says goodbye to Richard:

Her comment was the first thing I looked for when I saw the news and I was touched by everything she had to say. One thing surprised me -- I think I had imagined that the show was a vehicle for Richard Lewis and Jamie Lee must have been cast for him. (But it has been a very long time since I have seen it and it is also possible that some of my memories of it got scrambled with Mad About You and Paul Reiser).

Pam Davis I think was talked about coming back in the 80's.  Someone out here said they read they were looking to cast the role for Pammy to return to Bay City.  Wasn't she in AW for a short time?

According to the AWHP she appeared on AW on a few days in the spring of 1970.

    http://www.anotherworldhomepage.com/spinoffs.html

I thought there had been some speculation here that the casting notice for Pammy in the 1980s was actually a cover for recasting Iris. Hard to know without other evidence but it doesn't seem entirely implausible. Could also be they were looking for an antagonist for Rachel and could have gone either way.

Does anyone know why Linda Dano has stopped her podcast?  The last episode seems to be October 23, 2023; an interview with Joe Barbara.  At least that is the last episode available on Amazon Music.

On Spotify the latest episode is Feb 7 (Sean Ringgold).

  17. The bee in my bonnet -- Catlin and Sally's theme in 1984/1985 was this song which was played at their wedding on a portable stereo. Usually they played a very nice instrumental version in romantic scenes but at the wedding it was a version with vocals and lyrics. Per the AWHP the title was "When" but I have not been able to find any other information about it. Who wrote it? Who sang it? Did it have a life outside AW?

    Thank you so much.

You're welcome! I find the voiceover over the end credits/theme can be a real gold mine when you are trying to date episodes.

Funnily enough, while I was poking around for old TV listings, I thought I was getting somewhere when I found a picture of Sharon Gabet on this page and then I realised that this was for the following week instead. But there was a fall preview that had a little section on Another World but the page is oddly cropped and I don't think that the jade Buddhas mentioned at the top of the next column are part of the AW plot (although since they jumped from Egypt to Arizona who knows what kind of broken telephone might have been happening).

Eddie Drueding mentioned that the date on that episode (9/16) is likely wrong. If anyone can help narrow the date down this seems to be the week it would have aired in:

    SEPTEMBER 9-13, 1985
Donna fumed when Marley decided to go live with Dee. Felicia reminisced about her love for Edward, who's the subject of her latest romance novel. Edward, who underwent plastic surgery, nixed facing Felicia until he's fully recovered. Brittany asked Larry to find out if her baby, Evan, who's supposedly dead, is really alive. Michaud dreamed about seducing Sally, whose romantic thoughts are focused only on Catlin. Chris realized that Daphne was once his father, Frederick's, mistress. Carl and Daphne realized that there's a curse on the Egyptian falcon head pendant that Nancy wears. Cass agreed to help Kathleen prove her theory that something fishy is going on at the Chapin mansion. Jake got Ned to drop the car theft charges against Victoria. Daphne lied to Michaud that she's not looking for the mysterious Egyptian treasure. Donna meddled in Victoria's and Marley's lives.

I believe it must be the Thursday, September 12 -- the voiceover over the end theme mentions that Thrill of a Lifetime would be on that night and I found these listings showing that that show was on on Thursdays in 1985. (Note that the first couple of scenes in the broadcast were repeated from the previous day -- the first scene of September 12 would be Kathleen reading Felicia's book.) And more particularly, there is a commercial and a mention in the voiceover for The Terry Fox Story airing that night, and the listings for September 12 show Terry Fox at 10pm.

Nope. And I remember really liking VW in the role. I remember she got some sitcom that tanked, and had a couple of appearances on HIMYM.

I had forgotten she was on HIMYM -- I think the brainspace that remembers *Ashley* Williams was on the show absorbed Virginia Williams. I know she was on Fairly Legal with Sarah Shahi (which I didn't watch), but I did see her on the last season of Why Women Kill in a smallish role and she was memorable enough to me from ATWT that I call out "Brandy!" when I see her.

Brandy was first brought on in 2001. She was paid by Nick Scudder to sleep with Adam and break up Adam and Abigail. She then just kind of hung around town. In April 2002, Craig pays her to start a diversion to let James escape the hospital, in exchange for information on Carly's whereabouts (while she was kidnapped in the Spa story). Paul and Bonnie were trying to get dirt on Marshall to get him to back out of the DA race against Jessica. Spoiler:

      Reveal hidden contents

Thanks. So she had no other connections or interest other than being paid, at least at first. Not secretly someone's child or parent or lover.

  23. Does anyone remember the details of the character of Brandy? I recently came across a couple of episodes from September 2002 and I remembered her name and the fact that I liked Virginia Williams, but I am entirely confused about the storyline. Someone I assume must be Paul has caught Brandy snooping in Marshall's room while Bonnie is with Marshall somewhere else trying to convince Marshall that she finds him overwhelmingly attractive?
