She was living with Thomasina and Carter for a little while. They could have done something with that, either involving her in the drug storyline that both Nancy and Carter were tangentially involved in or making her a spoiler in Carter and Tom's marriage. Nancy was shallow and immature a lot of the time, and when she had the teen group to hang out with or Ada to butt heads with she had something to do. When she was at a loose end after Perry's death they kind of made it part of her addiction storyline but they didn't do a good job of integrating her into another group. I think it hurt her that Chris and Greg and Tony were all outsiders and also probably that they were mostly rich and/or professional so that there wasn't much conflict or character growth. It could have been interesting to see her jealous of teen princess Amanda if they had kept her around.

They did show Dee with an unrequited crush on Cass. IIRC Kathleen saw Dee kiss Cass, misunderstood, and broke up with Cass without telling him why. I feel like going any further than that with Cass and Dee would have been stretching it too far. I liked Dee but I have a hard time imagining Cass with her.

Alexandra Wilson's credit was shown at the start of the movie. I think she appears to work in the Just Sweats office and give John phone messages. Why that is a bigger/better credited part than Amanda I could not say. In a scene that starts just after 49 minutes in he seems to call her Christy.

Sara was around from October 1986 to October 1987. Rose started about the same time and apparently lasted only until February 1987. Margaret DePriest was the headwriter from March 1986 to January 1988 so it wasn't writer turnover that doomed them. According to the AWHP Sara went on a date with Jamie at one point so it seems like they made several attempt to attach her to core characters but gave up. The only thing I remember is that Rose was a widow and Sara's father's death might have been related to her estrangement from the family. Oh, and Sara had a boyfriend Joe who was either no good or just someone her family disapproved of. Missy Hughes later married Hank Cheyne but in the mid-eighties she was apparently in a relationship with a guy who subsequently became involved in a conspiracy to commit murder and insurance fraud. I remember reading the story in I think Vanity Fair.

I forgot that Chad was still pimping when he first came on the scene. It makes me so angry that MJ had to absorb so much guilt and shame but Chad didn't really have to accept much blame and none of his other "girls" were really treated as people. I guess he felt some guilt when Dawn was diagnosed with HIV/AIDS because of his role as a pimp but since he wasn't directly responsible it felt like it was just to his credit as a flawed but human man that he had feelings.

She was introduced working with Catlin to keep an eye on Brittany and Peter and I wondered whether they were trying her as a new love interest for Catlin (and really why they would call her Sara when he had just lost Sally?). Then of course Catlin left with Brittany and Sara glommed onto Chad without much effect. Chad wasn't really much of a character either -- he was a sort of spoiler for MJ and Adam and of course the link that brought Dawn to Bay City for a short while but he didn't have much going on of his own. Was he a suspect in the Sin Stalker storyline? Rachel didn't really benefit from any of it either. Rachel was in a funk and Mitch criticized her art. Matthew ran away from home and Mitch nobly followed to protect him while Rachel panicked assuming Mitch had kidnapped him. Rachel was jealous that Mitch was responding to the attractions offered by Felicia. Did they intend a real triangle with Rachel/Mitch/Felicia so that Mac would seek comfort with Rose, or were they always making a straight shot for Mitch/Felicia and the rest was just filler? So thankful, by the way, that all this was before the trend to mash names together. Imagine Rac or Machel. Fitch or Melicia. Although perhaps Bratlin could have amused me.

Soap Hoppers: The Soap Actors And Roles Thread
Thank you, I refer to the AWHP all the time and somehow didn't realize there was a separate list with more details about the day player roles. This is a tremendous amount of work you do and I find the research very interesting.

For what it's worth, the AWHP does have an entry for Kathleen Chalfant in the Actor Guide but there is no date or character name.

Almost certainly not here. I remember seeing your question and being disappointed not to see any response. And then when you confirmed the name I ran a search of the forums and found no discussions mentioning Pryce except for chat about Game of Thrones and The New Pope. I am now driving myself crazy trying to tell whether this newspaper photo from the August 14th episode (the day of Zane's funeral) shows signs of a hastily corrected Jonathan Pryce. John Considine talks about having to shoot 5 days' worth of episodes on his first day. The first airdate we see his face as Reginald is August 8, the preceding Friday so it's possible this was within the 5 days. I'd love it if Ellen Wheeler confirmed that she had to slap both Jonathan Pryce and then John Considine for the reshoot.

Thanks. It wasn't clear in the memoir whether Considine knew the name of the actor or not. He cites both the pace of the work and green card issues as reasons the first actor was replaced but I take Considine's version of events with a grain of salt because he also describes with relish how Anne Heche [in character] slapped him in their first scene when that was still Ellen Wheeler as Marley. If your source is reliable that's very interesting, thank you. I don't think they posted publicly here in response to your question. ETA: Jonathan Pryce is playing Prince Philip opposite Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth in the next series of The Crown. In 1986 he had already starred in Terry Gilliam's Brazil.

There is a surprisingly long list of actors who had more than one role on the show. http://www.anotherworldhomepage.com/previous.html A lot of these are very minor, but of course there was also Robert Kelker-Kelly as Sam and Bobby/Shane. Stephen Yates was Marianne's boyfriend Chris years before he was Jamie! And I had forgotten John Bolger was Dr Spader before he came back as Gabe.

Ben's charisma could have been solved by casting. I wasn't clamouring for the return of Richard Steen. Scott was already right there when Cheryl was telling Mary that Ben was coming home. So if they intended to bring Ben back at that point it would have been in addition to Scott. I was hoping that the crack detectives who caught Tom becoming Mark and Mavis becoming Lorna might know what was going on with casting at the time. Of course 1986 is not 1991 and I don't think anyone has ever figured out who quit as Reginald before John Considine was brought in either. Were there any other new young men around that time?

It depends on when they were making the decision. Jake originally arrived in Bay City February 4 1985 and Ben last appeared only a couple of weeks later on Feb 21. Certainly it appears that Richard Steen did not last out his contract as he had been around for less than a year. But Jake and Marley left town in Sept 1986, leaving a void in the middle of a story focused on the McKinnon family where it would have made a lot of sense for Ben to be present. Jake didn't return until May 1988. A Ben could easily have kept the McKinnon spot warm for him even if they had decided to swap the character out when Tom Eplin returned.

I always thought it strange that they didn't bring Ben back to Bay City, especially when Mary came back from the dead and while Jake and Marley were gone. I was surprised to find that Cheryl mentions him here -- not only to say that they had let Ben know that Mary was alive, but she even goes so far as to claim that he is coming home (and they don't really know what happened after he dropped out of school). But Ben never showed up. They must have at least tried to cast him but it's baffling to think what could have happened. They could have had Ben date Nancy instead of introducing outsider Tony Carlisle, and/or thrown Ben and Vicky together. The only reason I can think of that they would not have wanted a Ben character would be that he would not be a romantic option for Cheryl, but they didn't really offer Cheryl any alternative to Scott except perhaps creepy Chad Rollo.

A lot of the problems I had with Rhonda's Vicky at the time are the same issues I had with Anne's Vicky initially: the character seemed shallow and superficial and gullible. She trusted Reginald because he indulged her and had just a supporting role in the conflict between Michael and Reginald. Donna was fading out. Marley and Jake and Carter and Thomasina and even Dee I believe were gone. If they had intended to start something with Neal he was gone, and the rumour that they were introducing a brother for Jake didn't pan out. They didn't do much with Vicky and Nancy. They did throw Vicky together with Jamie a little bit but it wasn't until much later with Anne that things got interesting there. Maybe Rhonda could have been better with better writing but she didn't elevate it on her own. Did Rhonda's Vicky have real scenes with Bridget or did it get treated like Bridget was Reginald's servant and she hardly knew Vicky?

The jury had to make do with testimony -- they couldn't "see" the scene on video. And we also got a little clip of Quinn hustling Rachel out because Brittany had called right before talking about how she was going to kill Peter! Quinn testified to that at the trial, too. And probably half of the rest of Bay City testified similarly because Brittany had been running around town buying weapons and brandishing knives and talking about how much she hated Peter and wanted him dead. I can't blame the jury.

Trying to find out more about Zack sent me to some weird places and illuminated nothing. But one site offered me a photo of what it insists is Matt Ashford and Page Hannah when surely it must be Emma Samms. I was looking at the actor guide on the AWHP and happened to notice Ann Harada's name. I had not been very aware of her before Schmigadoon which I enjoyed a lot. Her imdb credits name the AW role as "Mimi" in 1991. Does anyone remember anything about Mimi? It may have been a very insignificant part, I just always have fun recognizing people who went on to bigger things.
