    EPISODE 21

    The PCPD --

Ric walked out of the interrogation room and back to the desk to finish up the paperwork, Alexis followed and asked to see her client.

"May I see my client now?"

Ric agreed and had Zander uncuffed from the chair, they walked into the interrogation room and Alexis closed the door for privacy.

"Has he lost his mind?!" Zander shouted at Alexis and she offered him a seat.

"Ric's doing what he thinks is the right thing to do."

"The right thing to do? Does he know that this will destroy my family?! I'm not too concerned about my business but Emily will be devastated and not too mention she's at risk right now, Alexis! Being arrested could not of come at a worse time!"

"I know, Zander .. I told him that. I'm working on a deal."

    "What kind of a deal?"

"A lesser charge and a suspended sentence."

"Alexis, do you know what Ric has in evidence? He's not going to go for that, especially when he has my entire shipment! He's got me over a barrel and he knows it."

"Let's not get ahead of ourselves with thinking the worst of your brother ...." her thought interrupted by Ric walking into the room. Ric came in and closed the door behind him.

"Okay, you know I've got you on a list of charges that will send your ass to Pentonville for the next 30 years ... BUT, I've thought about it and made a few phone calls."

"And ... you're willing to deal with my client?"

"IF he can give me what I want." Ric teased.

"What more do you want, Ric .... I've already given you more then enough for the immunity deal."

"I want the bigger fish, Zander ..... if I get him, I'll deal to a lesser charge, suspended sentence and you go home to your wife and family. If not, well then ....."

"If not then .. what? You're gonna send your own brother to prison?!" Alexis spoke up.

"Wait, so if I give you my contact, I'll walk on these charges plus our immunity deal still stands?"

"That about sums it up." Ric answered waiting to hear Zander's decision.

"You know what that does to me Ric? That will put the biggest red target on my forehead, bigger then one I already have on for Jason! ..... " Zander sat and thought about the options he was facing.

"No ... no way. I'm not giving up my contact."

"You better re-think that Zander ... the deal isn't on the table very long. Remember you have Emily to think about and your children." Ric hoping to play on Zander's weaknesses to get what he wanted from him.

"If I do this deal, Ric ... I'm signing my death warrant as well as my family's. I am not putting them in any more danger then they are already in!"

"With the evidence I have against you, Zander .... your children will have their own children when you next see them, do you want that?! Do you want Emily to raise those children alone for the next 15 to 20 years? Do you?!"

Alexis stepped in and backed Ric off of Zander. "Give me a few minutes with him..."

"Fine .. but like I said, this deal is fading fast, so if you want it, you better jump at it pretty quick." Ric walked out of the interrogation room and closed the door, leaving Zander to ponder the consequences of making the deal to save his life from prison or to make the deal and sign his death warrant.

    EPISODE 37

    Emily's hospital room --

Still holding Emily close to him, Zander turned towards the guard that was with him. "Cord was to be out there, find him something must of happened. He would never leave his post!" Zander ordered.

"He was there one minute and the next he was gone." Elenore replied.

"Did you see who did this?" Zander asked her.

"No sorry it all happened so fast. After the shot, he took off. I didn't get a good look at him, I was more worried about Emily then getting a detailed description of the man, Zander."

    "It's okay, mom."

Emily looked up at Zander. "It was Jason wasn't it?"

"Yeah baby, I think it was." Zander held her close to him and wrapped his arms tightly around her as her tears moistened his shirt and jacket.

Hospital staff came running a few minutes later to see what had happened, Monica and Alan followed close behind with Dr. Meadows in tow.

"Emily! Oh my God, are you alright?" Monica went to her daughter and snatched her from the arms of her husband.

"I'm okay .... " she replied yet Monica felt her daughter's body shaking from fear.

"No you're not alright, your shaking." Monica replied as Alan glared at Zander.

"You said you could protect her, Zander! What the hell happened?!" Alan demanded to know. "And are you going somewhere, you're not released yet?!"

"I signed myself out, okay?! I can't very well protect Emily when I'm lying in a hospital bed 3 floors down, now can I?!" Zander snapped back.

While Alan and Zander exchanged hurtful words towards each other, Dr. Meadows took care of Emily, and the hospital staff changed linens and pillows on the bed. Emily was put back into bed and Dr. Meadows cleared the room, she wanting to give Emily a full exam to make sure everything was alright.

Zander and Alan continued their heated discussion out in the hallway, as Elenore and Monica tried to separate the two and calm the two of them down.

"Please this is not the time or place for this, Alan!" Monica said as she tugged at his arm trying to back him off.

"Our daughter was almost killed ... this IS the time and place for this, Monica!" he barked back.

"Look, I know who did this and it's being handled." Zander replied just as his guard, Frank approached with the injured guard, Jerry stumbling along. Zander went to them.

"Here sit him down. What happened?" Zander asked Jerry

"I was blindsided, sir. He came out of no where, knocked me out dragged me down the hallway." Jerry replied as he rubbed the back of his head where there was a goose egg sized bump.

"I found him down the hallway propped up against the wall." Frank replied as Monica came over to take a look at Jerry's injuries.

"I'll be fine, Dr. Quartermaine. I'll have a bad headache for a while." Jerry replied as Monica checked him over.

Alan came up to Zander and grabbed at his arm, turning him around. "You said you know who did this .. tell me, who?!" Alan demanded to know who took a shot at his daughter.

Zander hesitant to tell him it was his own son, Jason. Zander didn't have to as he was interrupted by Ric rushing down the hallway to him.

"Are you alright? How's Emily?" Ric questioned as he approached the mob of people now standing outside Emily's room.

"We're fine. Please tell me you still have Alcazar in custody."

"Yeah, he's not being very cooperative though and he lawyer'd up. He's not giving us much of anything. Why do you think Lorenzo did this?"

"No, I don't. It was Jason, I'm sure of it." Zander replied and Alan's ears overheard his son's name.

    "You think Jason did this?!"

Zander turned towards Alan. "Yeah I do. This was a warning to me, that he could get to my family any time he wanted. This wasn't about Emily, this was business."

"Business?! Taking shots at his own sister? That's business?!"

"To Jason, yeah it is. You don't know him very well, do you?" Zander replied, questioning Alan's knowledge of his own son.

"This isn't the first time, Dr. Quartermaine." Ric replied.

Alan and Monica both shocked to hear that Jason was behind the attempts on Emily, they didn't know their son was capable of such violence against his own family.

"Look, Lorenzo Alcazar has been in lock up since late yesterday, there's no way he could of been behind this. It had to be Jason, there's no one else in town. I would know if there was." Zander replied.

Dr. Meadows emerged from Emily's room and Zander went to her concerned about his wife. "How is she?" he asked.

"Emily will be fine, she's just a little shaken up, but she'll be fine." Dr. Meadows replied then hesitated, Zander concerned about her hesitation to tell him something.

"What is it, Dr. Meadows? It's the baby, isn't it? .... Isn't it?!" Zander now fearing for his child's life and he went to the plexi-glass window and watched Emily resting.

Dr. Meadows followed him to the window and a worried look came across her face. "Something has to be done, Zander. There is too much strain on this baby, he's not going to be able to take much more of this." she replied and Zander looked at her.

"He's alright, isn't he? We're not going to lose him are we? We can't lose this baby, Dr. Meadows!"

"Hey what's the big idea having the television on, some people are trying to get some sleep." Emily said as she shielded her eyes from the light coming off the tv.

"It's nothing, go back to sleep. I gotta go. I'll be back as soon as I can." he said as he quickly got dressed.

"You are in no shape to be going anywhere, Zander. You're still re-cooperating from having a bullet taken out of you." she replied concerned for him.

"This can't wait, sweetheart. I have to go take care of something. I'll see you in a little while." he replied as he gave her a kiss on the cheek before leaving her alone for the night.

Zander had left in such a hurry he forgot to turn off the set. Emily sat up in bed and watched the chaos that was happening down on the docks.

"Earlier tonight a ship coming into dock at Pier 12 exploded. No injuries were reported, and we are still waiting to hear from investigators as to what really happened here tonight. We have no new information about this situation, other then the ship that exploded was owned by Port Charles business man, Zander Smith. We have yet to make contact with Mr. Smith to find out the details regarding why the ship was in Port Charles harbor and what if anything the ship was carrying. The Port Charles police department are on the scene and are still investigating this most recent explosion, this coming on the heels of a shooting 2 weeks ago involving a few individuals from Port Charles. Names were not disclosed to the public, but our sources tell us that Jason Morgan and Zander Smith were both taken and admitted to General Hospital for gunshot wounds. We will have more on this story, as well as the explosion here tonight, as soon as more information becomes available."

Emily shut off the television as she quickly got out of bed and went to the window to see if she could see the chaos the reporter talked about.

As she peered out the window into the darkness, the sky lit up in red lights as she watched from the 19th floor penthouse across town. She knew this is where Zander had run off to, and immediately became concerned for him. She was glad Devon was at her parent's, she didn't want him to see what was going to happen if Mac would come to arrest Zander, yet again.

She slipped on her robe and slippers and padded her way downstairs to the kitchen. She was wide awake now and there was no sleeping for her tonight, not till Zander returned home safely. She made a pot of fresh coffee and sat down at the counter with the cell phone in her hand. She wanted it to be near her in case Zander would call.

She heard the door and quickly went to see who it was. She ran out into the living room area only to find Johnny waiting for her. She sighed heavily, disappointed it wasn't Zander. Johnny saw the disappointment in her eyes.

"Sorry, I know you were expecting him." Johnny replied as Emily approached him.

"Yeah I was. Do you know where he ran off to?" she asked even though she knew Johnny couldn't tell her anything.

"You know I can't tell you that. Don't worry, he'll be fine. Marcus and Cord are with him." Johnny tried to reassure her that her husband would come home to her safe and sound.

"I just came in to check on you. I'll be on guard outside the door if you need anything." he said before he left, leaving her to worry about her husband, alone. She headed back towards the kitchen, the coffee should be done brewing by now. She thought to herself.

She sat down on the stool at the counter and poured herself a cup. She sat worried about her husband and wondering what was going on down on the docks. She peered out the kitchen window and saw the red lights flashing from all the emergency vehicles on the scene. She turned on the small television that sat in the corner, on the counter, and changed the channel to watch the news broadcast about the explosion. She watched in fear, afraid that at any moment, the police could be arresting her husband for what had happened.

It had been hours, since Zander had left and she was becoming more and more worried about him. She sat on the couch waiting for him, like she always did. She began to fear the worst, when the door opened and he walked in.

"Oh thank God" she cried as she got up quickly and went to him. "Are you okay? I was worried." she asked as he embraced her.

"Yeah I'm fine, just had a little business to take care of." he replied and walked with her to the couch.

"It was all over the late news. Anything to be concerned about?" she asked as he laid back against the cushions of the couch.

"Nothing for you to be concerned with. Things are all taken care of." he replied. She knew when to stop talking, and this was the time.

"Well, I'm going to bed. You coming?" she asked as she got up and headed for the stairs.

"Yeah in a minute." he replied as he turned his head back to look at her.

"Okay...." she said before she climbed the stairs to the bedroom. As she disappeared out of sight, Cord came in the front door.

"Sir, your brother is here to see you." Cord announced as Ric stood in the doorway.

"Come on in, Ric." Zander said as he motioned for him to enter the apartment.

"What the heck happened tonight?" Ric questioned as he approached Zander.

"I don't know, it was obviously done on purpose." Zander wasn't too concerned with finding out who did it, he already knew who.

"You think Sonny did this?" Ric asked. "Yeah I do. I think it was retaliation for the shooting. I think Sonny thinks I was the one who set up the ambush on the docks and got Jason shot." Zander answered.

Ric looked at him point blank and asked "Well did you, Zander? Did you set Jason up?"

Off the record?" Zander asked before admitting to anything.

"Never mind, I don't want to know." Ric replied as he turned and headed towards the door. "I'll see you tomorrow, get some rest." he added as he left the apartment.

Rest? Zander couldn't get any rest, his shipment just blew up in the Port Charles harbor. He went to the door and locked it when his brother left. Zander retired for the evening, thankful he was alive to live another day.

When he entered the bedroom, he noticed Emily asleep, or so he thought. He got himself undressed and climbed into be with her, pulling the blankets up over him. He laid on his back and stared at the ceiling. Both of them lay awake concerned about what tomorrow may bring down on their family. It was only a few short hours till daylight and his day started all over again. He closed his eyes and tried to get some needed sleep.

She turned her head towards him to see if he was asleep. He hadn't said a word when he came to bed, though she didn't think he knew she laid awake waiting for him. Being careful of his healing wounds, she moved closer to him slowly, and he felt her against him as he winced when he felt a twinge of pain. He wrapped his arm around her and tipped his head down and kissed on top of her head.

"I love you, baby." he said and she looked up at him.

"I love you too." she returned and with a smile. She closed her eyes and fell asleep in the arms of the man she loved.

Jason's room at the hospital --

Emily stood in the doorway of her brother's room and cautiously approached his bedside. She had waited till Elizabeth had taken a walk before she came in to see Jason. She didn't feel the tension would be good for his recovery. As she approached him, he awoke from his light sleep.

"Hi." he said as she took a seat on the swivel stool next to the bed. "Hi." was all she could say. She wasn't sure what to say to him. He had always been there for her and now they were on opposite sides. She didn't want anything to come in between them, but something had. She sat searching for the words to express how she felt at that very moment, her brother and her husband both fought so hard to survive this ordeal, words were hard to come by. Jason reached for her hand and she squeezed it tight. She knew he was of few words and with one squeeze of her hand, she felt she needed no words to express how much she loved him and how sorry she was that this had to happen.

Jason cracked a smile when his wife appeared in the doorway. Emily turned to see Elizabeth standing there with a cup of coffee in her hand and a smile on her face.

"I ... uh ... just stopped by to see how he was doing." Emily said as she rose from the stool and headed towards the doorway. "Oh ..." Elizabeth replied softly and nodded as she passed and left the room. Emily stood outside and blew a kiss to Jason through the plate-glass window.

She hated that a friendship like Elizabeth and she had was strained because of the feud between their husbands. Emily just wished it could be like it was before all this had started a year or so ago. Zander had inherited his portion of the territory after his uncle passed away last year, he had been molded by Sonny, and she thought Jason resented that from the start, but he never spoke of it with her.

After Zander took over the territory, the tension between she and Elizabeth grew to enormous proportions. It had taken a tragedy like this one, to bring them to speaking terms, but she figured who better to know how you feel is the best friend who is going through the same thing she was.
Emily turned and walked down the hallway back to Zander's room.

Zander's room at the hospital --

It had been over a week since his surgery and Zander was awake and being poked and prodded by his father-in-law it was not something he was used to. He grimaced as he tried to re-position his body so he'd be more comfortable. He hated hospitals, and it seemed he always ended up there for one reason or another. Before leaving, Alan jotted down a few notes in Zander's chart and told him his prognosis was good. Zander's eyes lit up when he saw Emily walk into the room, as she passed her dad on his way, he told her that Zander was doing fine and he was alot stronger then he was the day before, he'd back later to check in on Zander again.

She watched her dad leave the room and took a seat on the edge of the bed. "Listen, there was a guy here last week, and he wanted to ask you some questions about what happened on the docks." she began as she could see the concerned look on his face.

"And ...?" he replied wanting to hear more.

"And ... I told him to go away, I told him that you were in no shape to talk with anyone, even if he did wear a badge." Zander groaned as he propped himself up on the pillow.

"A badge? A cop?" he inquired still wanting details about this stranger asking questions.

"He told me his name was Detective Jake Steel and he was from Miami. What I can't figure out is why he'd be interested in anything that's going on here in Port Charles?" she had a few questions of her own, and from the evasive look on Zander's face, she wasn't sure if he really wanted her to pursue it.

"I need you do something for me, Em. I need you stay away from this Detective." Emily bit her bottom lip wondering why. She was about to ask, and he told her not to, just do it. She agreed, even though in the back of her mind, she wondered why her husband asked this of her.

"One more thing, Em ..." he continued.

"Anything." she replied with a smile as always.

"I need you to call Ric. I need to see him." Just something else that posed more questions.

"Why Ric?" she thought, but she did as he asked. "Okay, I'll see if I can track him down."

    At Kelly's Diner --

Ric Lansing hadn't been town all that long, less than a year and had already found what he wasn't expecting to find when he stepped foot in Port Charles. A well educated man, he had been given a lot of material things growing up as a child, more material then emotional. So much pressure from his father to do well in school, in life. It was hard to live up to. He was a young boy when his parents divorced, he living with his father till he was 18, then off to college to earn a degree in Business, then Law school ... only the best for the son of a Senator. His mom, still young, remarried a wonderful man in her eyes, Ric wasn't too pleased. He was into dirty dealings and had shady connections that were dangerous. Ric was surprised to find out when he came home from college during a winter break that his mother had a child with this man. A man he thought was all wrong for her. Ric had just hoped that this young child would not fall victim to his father's controlling and dangerous ways.

Arriving in Port Charles, one thing had brought him to this waterfront town ... Sonny Corinthos. He soon found out that Sonny was not the only reason he needed to stay. The two half brothers were surprised to find each other eating at the same diner for months and not even realizing who the other was. It surely took Ric by surprise when he sat eating breakfast one morning and saw a young man walk into Kelly's who seemed familiar. His eyes seemed to have something Ric had seen all his life ... it was like looking in the mirror and seeing a part of you staring back. He approached the young man and introduced himself. Being leery of a stranger, the other young man was cautious. Ric reassured him that he wanted nothing from him, just some answers to a few questions. The young man shook Ric's hand and introduced himself as Zander Smith.

Zander and Ric got acquainted and found that they had similar pasts. Zander not really knowing much about his family, he had spent most of his time away from home in boarding schools and when he was home, he was pushed aside like last week's news. It was like putting the pieces of a puzzle together, when each piece was finally in it's rightful place, it had revealed that these two who had just met, were indeed half brothers. For Zander it was a chunk of his life he had soon forget, being unwanted by parents, never loved as he should of been, he ran away from that life a long time ago and never looked back. Ric, wishing he could of run from a family life that was suffocating him.

Ric sat eating his lunch at his favorite eatery, Kelly's. He had moved out months ago, but still love to come and people watch.

As he took the last bite of his sandwich, his cell phone rang. He reached in his jacket pocket and flipped it open.

"Yes." he answered. He recognized the voice on the other end without her telling him who she was.

"Ric? It's Emily Smith. Zander needs to see you at the hospital." He didn't ask questions, he told her he'd be there within the hour and flipped closed his phone. He paid his bill and grabbed his overcoat and headed out the door.

"Now what, little brother. What have you got yourself into?" he mumbled under his breath as he stepped outside into the winter chill.

    At the hospital --

The automatic doors of the hospital opened as he approached and he made his way to the nurse's station, only to find Emily waiting for him.

"Hi. Thanks for coming so quickly." she said as she extended her hand to him.

"Sure, why wouldn't I come. My brother needs me." he replied as he shook her hand out of respect. "Come on, I'll take you too him." she said as she escorted him down the hallway.

Emily and Ric reached Zander's room, and he smiled when he saw both of them approach the bedside.

"Sweetheart, could you leave us alone for a little while?" Emily smiled and kissed him on the cheek.

"Sure, I'll go see how my brother's doing." Zander thanked her as she stepped away from him. Ric took a seat next to the bed after he removed his overcoat and laid it across the bottom of the bed.

Zander moaned as he tried to prop himself up so he could sit more erect in the bed.

"Thank you for coming." he said as he looked at his brother sitting next to him.

"No thanks needed. It sounded urgent." Ric replied.

"Yes it is .... His name is Detective Jake Steel.

The rain began to pound hard against the windows of the penthouse, dark clouds hovered over the city of Port Charles, and three enemies came face to face, ready to take each other out at any given moment. Their guns drawn, they circled each other like vultures ready to swoop in for the kill. Zander out numbered at this point, Lorenzo and Morgan had their sights set on killing him. Port Charles wasn't big enough for the three of them, it had come to head on a stormy night, just like it had began all those months ago. The battle raged on, never letting up for them to breathe. Always watching their own backs, being afraid they could be taken out at any given time. All of them vulnerable, each of them needing the other's territory to reign supreme. It was do or die time, and none of the three were giving up without a fight.

The sky lit up as a lightening strike hit across town, and as it hit the ground, the penthouse went black. Guns still drawn, it was any one's guess who they were aiming at now. The three of them stood frozen, hands tightly wrapped around the butt of their guns, fingers ready to pull the trigger. Lightening lit up the penthouse as a shots were fired, the three of them took cover.

Zander hidden in the shadows and he noticed the storm raged outside the penthouse window, and lightening he saw in the distance. The light it gave off was just enough to see shadows inside the living room of the apartment. Lorenzo peeked his head up from behind the couch, he winced with pain from the gun shot wound to his shoulder.

Morgan fired a second shot from across the room, hoping to hit the dark shadow he saw, missing the shadow he hit the expensive vase that sat on the wooden cabinet. It shattered in a few million pieces on the floor.

"Damn!" Morgan called out when he heard the vase breaking.

"You are really a bad shot!" Lorenzo commented, still taking cover behind the couch. His shoulder bleeding heavily.

"Well, I'm sorry my aim is bad, but it's a little hard to see some one your shooting at in the *dark*!" Morgan replied sarcastically.

Zander peered out from behind the door of the kitchen and took aim on Jason.

A shot was fired from Zander's direction, the force of the hit, impacted Jason hard enough to knock him down on his backside. His cursing could be heard again in the darkness.

"Dammit!" he shouted as he pressed his hand against his bleeding shoulder. "Nice shot there, Zander."

"It wasn't that great, you're still alive, Morgan!" Zander called back.

"Hey ...." a familiar voice from behind could be heard in the darkness.

Zander was startled by Marcus who had come up the back steps and into the kitchen.

"Good shot ..." Marcus praised as took his position beside his boss.

"What are you doing here, I thought I told you stay with the car." Zander scolded.

"I know, but with Morgan and Lorenzo here, I thought you might need some help."

"How did you know Lorenzo was here?" Zander questioned.

"I saw his limo parked about a half a block from the building. Besides, his driver is standing out front waiting for him."

Zander couldn't help but laugh under his breath. "Well, thank you for having my back. If we make it out alive, there's a bonus waiting for you." Zander grinned.

"I'm gonna hold you to that, boss." Marcus replied.

With Lorenzo and Morgan both shot in their shoulders, the firing had ceased for a few moments. Lorenzo began to stir as he propped himself up against the back of the couch.

"Morgan! You dead yet?!" Lorenzo chuckled.

"No ... and apparently you aren't either!"

"There's two of us, we can take Zander down and split the territory!" Lorenzo trying to make a deal with Morgan.

"No deals, Lorenzo. It's all or nothing for me!"

    Stand Off

    Jason, Zander and Faith
    At the Cellar

Zander froze. His hand clenched tightly around the 9mm hand gun as he held it to the back of Jason's neck. Jason's hand still snuggly wrapped around Faith's throat, Zander could see it was hard for her to breathe as Jason squeezed tighter.

"Jason, don't make me shoot you." Zander managed to get out as he swallowed hard, trying to not let Jason see him sweat.

"Zander, if you pull that trigger it will be the last thing you ever do."

Faith watched as Zander got a better grip on the gun and held to Jason's neck ... "Just shoot him already!" she cried out as Jason's hand fit snugly underneath her chin. Zander's mind was racing, his heart was pounding so fast, if he pulled the trigger, it would be because the adrenalin that pumped through his veins gave him the courage to do it.

Neither Jason nor Zander flinched as the situation became more intense, the feeling in the room made it hard to breathe.

"Let her go, Jason! Now! Or I swear ...." Jason's eyes were cold, they were hard, as they stared through Faith, who was helpless and depending on Zander to save her life.

"Or what? Go ahead, Zander .. shoot me! Prove me wrong!" Jason left go of his hold on Faith and turned his attention to Zander, who was still holding his gun pointed directly at Jason. Jason pulled his gun from his waist band and held it on Zander. Faith fell back in the chair behind her as she rubbed her throat where Jason's hold was.

"I should of shot you when I had the chance, Zander." Jason said without feeling. Zander's stare became cold, his eyes held no feeling for the man who stood before him. He felt his hands were moist as he adjusted his grip on his weapon.

"Are you guys gonna kiss now or shoot each other?" Faith said as she stood beside them. Jason glanced at her with his cold eyes.

"Zander's not worth the bullet." Jason replied as his eyes focused back on Zander.

"I may not be but you are!" Zander said as he cocked his weapon. Jason's face showed no fear as he stared down the barrel of the gun.

Faith stood beside Zander feeling the power as he held his weapon and took a solid stance up against Jason.

"Any last words, Morgan?" Faith purred as her hand brushed against Zander's shoulders from one side to the other, keeping her eyes focused on Jason.

"He doesn't have the guts to pull the trigger." Jason was confident that Zander couldn't kill anyone, it wasn't in him to do it. The gleem in Zander's eyes was gone, the coldness had already over taken him, his mind was clear, his attention focused on the trigger.

Faith leaned in and whispered in his ear. "Shoot him." Zander's eyes drifted to Jason's stare as he felt his finger slowly add pressure to the trigger. Jason still holding his weapon up in defense, he saw Zander make the move to shoot and he did the same.

"Don't do it Zander. Cause once you pull that trigger, it's all over, for you and me both." Jason replied.

Faith stepped away from the stand off and walked towards the bar. She poured the liquor into a shot glass, she didn't flinch as shots rang out. She looked towards the doorway to see Zander standing over Jason. She walked over with the shot glass in her one hand, and the bottle in the other. Zander put his gun back in his waistband as she approached.

"Drink?" He glanced down at the glass, and then the bottle, and then back at her.

His hand reached for the bottle ... without saying a word he took a swallow, he could feel the coldness of the liquor all the way down. He wiped the excess liquor from his mouth with his hand and looked down at Jason's lifeless body lying on the floor. Faith stood in the doorway with a smile on her face, she had finally found someone with enough guts to do what others have only thought of doing.

Zander stepped over Jason's body without a second thought about what he had done. He walked to the bar and sat down on the stool, he glanced back over to Jason, the coldness in his eyes became a permanent part of his demeanor, the transformation was now complete. He could now say he was a cold blooded killer, and the man who took out Jason Morgan.

    The hospital ER --

Elizabeth pulled back the curtain, and was taken back by what she saw. A white gauze patch on his forehead held in place with opaque hospital tape, an IV hooked to his left forearm, wires pressed against his chest, an oxygen mask that was covering his nose and mouth, her husband was in critical condition. She slowly walked towards him and took his hand in hers. Amy was checking his vitals on the machine that was standing next to him and jotting down the numbers on her clipboard.

"You can talk to him, but I doubt he'll respond. He's on a lot of medications, it may be a while." Amy remarked as she pulled the curtain closed and left Elizabeth alone with her husband.

Her head fell to the metal sidebar along the gurney and she sobbed. This was her worst fear coming true and she couldn't control what was going to happen. She said a little prayer and squeezed Jason's hand. She told him that she loved him and that he would be alright. He was in the very best hands, the doctors would take care of him. As she spoke the words to Jason, she needed to believe them herself. Tears trickled down her cheek as she sat with him for a while hoping that he would know she was there with him.

Monica appeared and walked up behind her. "I have some news."

Elizabeth startled by Monica's presence she rose from the swivel stool she was sitting on and waited to hear the prognosis. Emily came to be with Elizabeth as she heard the news about Jason.

"We have done the best we can right now. Jason will need surgery to remove the bullet, however I don't want to go in there blind. So we have administered a self inducing coma medication to keep him sedated for a while. We can slowly bring him out of it when we think it is safe enough to go in and removed the fragments. His vitals are not stable enough to do that now, thus we need to get him stabilized before we go in search of the bullet and the fragments it may have left. Xrays tell us that it doesn't look like it punctured any major organs, which is good. However the bullet has lodged itself in a compromising position, and for us to remove it, we need to know that Jason is strong enough to handle the surgery. He is by no means out of the woods, the next 24 to 48 hours are critical." Monica knew that it was a lot for Elizabeth to comprehend right now, but she needed to know how things were looking for Jason.

Elizabeth gave her a tearful thank you for telling her all she could and returned to be with Jason.

    The hospital chapel --

A few hours had passed and Emily had tried to stay positive about Zander. She had left Devon with Alexis and Ned who had come to see what they could do for her, while she went to the chapel to light a candle and to say a prayer.

She pushed open the chapel doors to find Sonny kneeling at the alter. She was hesitant to enter, but she had a few choice words for him so she moved forward. The doors swooshed closed and Sonny rose to his feet. He turned and saw Emily standing in the back of the chapel, her hands folded in front of her, her eyes filled with anger.

She took a few steps towards him before he stepped down from the alter.

"Emily....I'm so sorry." he spoke softly as her arms fell to her side, her fists clenched in anger. Emily stiffened as he walked passed her and through the double doors.

She turned and watched him go, not saying a word to the man who put her brother and her husband against one another. Her heart filled with hate for the man, everyone called Mr. Corinthos.

She lit a candle for Zander, and a candle for her brother Jason. She took a seat the nearest pew and whispered a prayer for them. She heard the doors open once again and she looked up to find her dad standing in the doorway.

    "We have news about Zander."

Emily stood up slowly from the pew and turned towards her father. She took a deep breath and approached him, unsure of was coming next. Alan reached for her hands and held them tightly in his. Her father's hands strong and always comforting to her, she knew the news about Zander wasn't good.

"Zander's out of surgery. He stayed strong during the procedure and is stable." as he finished Emily sighed relief.

"May I see him?" she asked as she sniffled back the tears.

"Come, I'll take you to him." he dad said as he escorted her out of the chapel.

"How's Jason?" she asked as they turned the corner and headed towards the recovery room.

"The same. Elizabeth's with him." His concerned look didn't help comfort her own fears as they reached the enclosed room where Zander lay lying in a hospital bed connected to all sorts of machines.

    Outside Zander's room --

The large glass windows revealed to her, her husband who lie lifeless. She cautiously peered around the corner and stood in the doorway. She walked slowly into the room and towards his bedside. The small stool squeaked as she rolled it closer to the bed. She sat down and took his hand in hers. She held it close to her lips and kissed it gently as her free hand brushed back the few strands of coal black hair of his forelock from his eyes. Her hand brushed against his cheek as she brought it back down to her and wrapped her hands around his. She kissed his hands once again as she whispered against them how much she loved him.

She sat and listened to the silence. The distinct sound of the breathing machine continued as the deflator moved in an up and down motion with every breath. Zander was pale, his color had not returned to what she had remembered, the bronze tone had vanished from his face, his arms, his hands were cold to the touch. She knew she had to bring him back to her. He had the fight of his life staring him in the face and he had to stay strong and fight to be with her ... yet again.

    EPISODE 32

Greg's car rounded the corner of 3rd and State Streets, Greg parked the car out in front of a large apartment building and sat collecting his thoughts. He had a plan, the first part of his plan already put into motion, the second part, almost complete, the third part was soon to come. He sat for a few minutes and looked up and down the street, being cautious that no one followed him. He climbed out of the car and went inside the apartment building.

He made his way up to the penthouse floor and stepped off the elevator. Penthouse # 3 was his destination and he was a few short steps from it. He walked to the apartment door and knocked. He still shaking, his heart racing a mile a minute, his palms sweating, he couldn't help but be a bit scared. He just betrayed one of the most powerful bosses on the east coast, his life was soon to be cut short if he didn't strike a deal with the person he came to see.

He waited in the hallway and heard footsteps coming towards the door. The door opened, and Greg was invited inside.

"Hello .... Gregory?" Jason said as he closed the door and Greg walked inside.

"Yeah, it's Greg .. Look, I have something you may want."

"Oh and you came to see if I'd be at all interested in what you got?"

"Yeah that's about the jist of it." Greg's nervousness became obvious.

"Why so nervous, Greg? It couldn't be that you are my competition's employee, and by you being here in my penthouse would constitute betrayal, now would it?" the man leaned in to Greg when he spoke and it rattled Greg.

"So do you want to deal or not?"

"What do you have that I would want, Greg?"

"I don't know, perhaps Zander's shipment and his territory to top it off?"

The man raised his eyebrow at Greg's offer. But he had to wonder how Greg, a bodyguard, would be able to come up with such an offer.

"Care to tell me how you came of this offer?"

"Let's just say it fell into my lap." Greg replied and Jason poured himself a drink.

"Okay, then let's just say that I'm interested."

Greg jumped about out of his skin as the door to the apartment opened and a bodyguard walked in. "Easy there, Greg ..." the man replied when he noticed Greg jumped at the opening of the door. "A bit paranoid aren't we?"

"Do you blame me? I have betrayed my boss, and the organization, and to top it off, I'm standing in the living room of the enemy!"

"Look, I tell you what .... I do have a place for you here Greg, that is if you want to switch sides?"

"What I want is a one way ticket out of town! I'm living on borrowed time! I'm sure by now Zander knows what happened and he's gonna be looking for me!"

"Alright, alright. Here have a drink, it'll calm ya down." Jason offered Greg a drink and Greg took it.

"You have some stuff to show me or am I taking your word for it?" Jason asked wanting to see what Greg had to offer.

"I have some stuff, it's down in the car ... in the trunk."

"Go get it ...." Jason ordered his guard. The guard nodded and left the penthouse.

Greg knew what he was about to do would get him killed, but he had already loaded the gun by stealing the product and betraying Zander, what more could he lose? He mulled around Jason's apartment till the bodyguard came back, the
bag of product in his hand.

Jason realized something else was going on with Greg besides the stolen bag of product he had in his car.

"You were the one who took a shot at Zander, weren't you?" Jason asked and Greg's eyes widened and didn't answer him.

"On someone else's orders ..." Jason added as he contemplated who those ordres came from.

Just as Jason was about to put all the pieces together, his body guard came back with the bag of product in his hands.
"You say this is part of Zander's shipment?" Jason asked as he looked over the white powder.

"Yeah we just got a shipment in."

    "How much of it?"

"A couple million dollars worth, I'd suspect."

Jason turned towards Greg and raised his eyebrow, his interest piqued.

    "Really ... "

"Yeah... really. You interested or do I take it elsewhere?"

Greg replied hoping that he had made the right choice by coming to Jason.

"Oh I'm interested, but I want to see the whole shipment."

Greg disappointed by Jason's request. "You get me out of town tonight, and I will tell you where you can find the rest of that shipment."

Jason picked up the phone and called the airport. "Have the plane ready in 30 minutes." Jason hung up the phone and turned his attention back on Greg.

"Okay ... now tell me where the rest of it is." Jason demanded.

    "Pier 53 ... warehouse 3A ...."

    Zander's limo --

"Right away, sir." Marcus replied and pulled the car out into the street, heading towards the penthouse.

In a few minutes, Marcus pulled the car up to the curb and parked. He climbed out of the driver's seat and rushed to the other side to open the back door for Zander.

"Stay with the car. I'll be down in a few minutes." Zander instructed before walking into the apartment building.

Marcus noticed Zander ignoring the pain he was feeling from his injuries, and he just shook his head in disbelief, as Zander walked off. He too, didn't understand Zander's motives for doing what he was obviously going to do. The only reason Zander would want to stop by the penthouse would to pick up his weapon, Zander was going into battle with Morgan, and there wasn't anything anyone could do to stop him.

The elevator stopped on the penthouse floor and the doors opened up. Zander stepped off the car and walked to his penthouse. Unlocking the door and stepping inside, he slid the keys back into his jacket pocket and went to his desk. He opened up the top drawer and found the black box where he had kept a loaded spare 9mm. He removed the box from the drawer and set it on the desk, staring at it's shape and size, he opened it up. He was unaware that he had company inside the apartment.

    The Penthouse --

"I figured you would be showing up sooner or later." the voice said from the shadows and Zander grabbed the gun from the box quickly to defend himself from darkened figure.

"Yeah and I thought you were in lock up." Zander replied as he held his weapon on Lorenzo.

"Yeah well, I have a good attorney." Lorenzo smirked.

"What are you doing here, Lorenzo?"

"I heard your warehouse got blown up. I just wanted to let you know that it wasn't me who ordered it."

"Yeah I know, Morgan was behind this last one."

"This last one? All of them, Zander. Morgan's been blowing up your warehouses all over the waterfront. You thought I was to blame for that?" Lorenzo chuckled.

Zander starting now to piece a few things together as he stood with his 9mm drawn on Lorenzo. If Lorenzo wasn't blowing up his buildings and it was in fact Morgan, then where did Greg fit in to all this.

"I take it you have a handle on the Greg situation? He's not to smart is he? He missed taking you out a few times." Lorenzo said knowing that by the look on Zander's face he had no clue that Greg was behind the attempts made against he and Emily.

"Don't you worry about Greg, he's none of your concern .....anymore." Zander finally piecing it all together and his hands tightened around his weapon.

"Yeah I guess once I showed him the door, Greg went elsewhere with his ideas."

"And what might they have been?" Zander asked keeping his focus on Lorenzo, now knowing he was the one who had hired Greg.

"To take you down and out. Personally, there's too much heat right now, but Greg knew best." Lorenzo shrugged. Still not arming himself with the weapon he kept in a shoulder holster underneath his suit jacket.

Zander making it aware to Lorenzo that he finally realized Greg's plans. "Ah I see, so Greg left *your* employment and went looking elsewhere .... finding Morgan to pick up where you had left off."

"Yeah something like that. Greg was more of a liability to me then an asset." Lorenzo devilishly smiled. "I guess Greg figured Morgan because he's been the one taking the shipments all this time ....."

"And you just make attempts to take me out, along with my wife!" Zander replied finishing Lorenzo's thought. "Greg probably double crossed you, I mean someone had to send those financial records to the DA's office."

Zander's cell phone ring could be heard coming from his jacket pocket and he reached in slowly to answer it, his attention never leaving Lorenzo.

    "Yeah ...." Zander replied.

"Just wanted to let you know, boss, that Morgan's on his way up. He slipped passed me somehow."

"That's alright Marcus .... I'm ready for him when he gets here."

Zander flipped closed his cell phone and stuffed back in his jacket pocket. "We have company coming."

Lorenzo raised his eye brow, implying he wanted to know who would be attending this little impromptu meeting.

"Morgan's on his way up, he should be here ...." Rapping on the penthouse door interrupted Zander. Zander turned his weapon on the door, and Lorenzo then drew his from inside his jacket.

Zander opened the door slowly, Lorenzo was revealed to Morgan as the door opened farther and farther. "Come on in Morgan .... join the party." Zander said as he stepped out from behind the door, his 9mm pointed at Jason.

A storm in the distance made itself known as the thunder rolled across the sky as Jason stepped inside the apartment and Zander closed the door. The three of them now realizing the end of their war was near, some one was going to die tonight. As the rain storm was brewing outside, there was a storm of different sorts brewing inside that apartment.

    EPISODE 23

    At the PCPD --

Sal Morales is .. was your contact?!" Ric replied as Zander smiled at him. "Well, Sal had been and then Miguel took over the last few years ...."

"They came to Port Charles to see you ..."

    "Unfortunately yes they did."

"Now I see why you wanted the immunity deal!"

"Yeah, and now you can uncuff me, I have a wife who needs me." Zander replied as he showed Ric the handcuffs that still wrapped his wrists.

Ric pushed himself away from the table and got up from his seat. He stormed out of the interrogation room and an officer came in to release Zander. Zander and Alexis walked back into the squad room and he noticed Thomas was still cuffed to the chair.

Zander cleared his throat and Ric glared in his direction.

"And Thomas? He was part of the deal, Ric." Zander said as he pointed towards Thomas.

Ric motioned for an officer to release Zander's man from the chair. Some of the officers in the squad room blocked the doorway and Zander from leaving.

"He's free to go ...." Ric said and shook his head for the officers to move out of Zander's way.

As Zander walked towards the door, he heard the loud bang of Ric's clenched fist hitting the top of the metal desk in frustration and disgust.

Zander stopped in his tracks but didn't turn around to look back at his brother, as Alexis walked up behind Zander and coaxed him thru the doors of the PCPD and out onto the front stoop.

Zander gave Alexis a warm thank you kiss on the cheek .... "If you need me, I'll be at the hospital with my wife."

    Outside the PCPD --

Zander and Thomas walked down the front steps of the PCPD, leaving Alexis standing alone as she cracked a smile while watching him walk to the limo that was waiting for him. She thought it strange that the street was empty, the silence was deafening, but that was shattered when gunfire echoed through the desolate city street and Zander suddenly fell to the ground.

He laid lifeless underneath the lit streetlamp, Thomas lay with him. Alexis watched as the gunman ran towards a car that was waiting for him, Ric and other officers came running out of the police station when they heard the shots.

"Someone call an ambulance, we've got two men shot out here!" Ric yelled back as he raced down the cement stairs to his brother's side.

A few of the officers raced to their cars and gave chase to the car that sped away into the night. Sirens shrilled as the police cars took after the suspect, Alexis and Ric rushed to Zander.

Hoping Zander was still alive, Ric turned him over and checked for a pulse, there was one but it was faint. Alexis knelt down by Zander and laid his head in her lap, she caressed his face and smoothed back his hair as tears stained her cheeks.

"We gotta do something, Ric!" Alexis worried and in a panic.

"There is so much blood, this can't all be Zander's." Ric noticed as he went to Thomas, who was lying next to Zander.

"Is he ....." Alexis asked as she sat with Zander's head in her lap.

"No, he's alive, but barely. Where is that ambulance?!"

Officers began taping off the scene as they were instructed to do by Mac, who had come down the stairs to assess the situation.

Ric stood up and was met by Mac.

"Was it a hit?" Mac asked as he observed the two victims lying at his feet.

    "Yeah I think so."

"The shots came from .... across the street." Alexis pointed. "He took off down the sidewalk to a car that was waiting for him at the end of the block." she explained as the ambulance sirens could be heard as it approached.

"Well we have officers in pursuit, we'll get him." Mac said and he saw the medics had arrived.

Alexis held onto Zander as the paramedics came onto the scene, their medical supplies in hand. One attended to Thomas as the other one knelt down beside Zander.

"Ma'am you're going to have to get out of the way, so we can work on him." the paramedic said to Alexis as the evaluated Zander's wounds.

"I'm not leaving him!" Alexis exclaimed tearfully as Ric came up behind her and tried to pull her back.

"Come on, Alexis, let the men do their jobs ..." he said as she looked up at him, tears could be seen on her cheeks.

Zander's blood stained Alexis's shirt and hands as Ric pulled her back from the scene, she focused still on Zander and watched as the paramedics worked feverishly on him. The officers around them treated the scene as a crime scene and one began to ask questions of her. She concentrating on Zander and not on anyone else, ignoring the officer who stood in front of her.

Ric wrapped his arm around her ...."Zander's going to be alright. He has to be." tears fell from Ric's eyes as he spoke.

Alexis turned into him and wrapped her arms around his neck tightly. Ric motioned for the officer to leave, that it was the wrong time to be asking questions from Alexis. The paramedics got Zander and Thomas both on gurneys and rushed them to the ambulance that was waiting. Alexis noticed and left Ric's arms to be with Zander.

"I'm going with him!" Alexis demanded as she approached the paramedics.

    "I can't let you do that, ma'am ..."

"I said I'm going with him!" she shouted again and tried to get into the ambulance. Ric came up behind her and his hands grabbed onto her arms and pulled her back.

"Go! Go! We'll meet you at the hospital!" he ordered the paramedics.

Alexis turned into him, and glared. "Zander needs me! How could you let him go without me?!" she cried angrily, the ambulance's sirens could be heard as it pulled away.

"I know he does .. we'll meet them at the hospital. Come on, I'll drive."

    Emily's hospital room --

"He's going to be okay, right Alexis .. please tell me he's going to be alright." Emily sobbed.

"They're doing all that they can for him, Em ... Bobbie said they won't know anything till they get him into surgery, but he's in very capable hands." Alexis replied not wanting to make matters worse by saying something she shouldn't.

"I want to go to the chapel and say a prayer for him, would you go with me?" Emily asked as she dried her tears.

"Sure, I'll go with you." Alexis not at all religious but she knew it was important to Emily to find some comfort during this time.

Alexis pulled over the wheelchair that sat in the corner of Emily's room to the bed and assisted Emily into it. She grabbed the blanket that lay across the foot of the bed and laid across her lap for warmth. Alexis put on Emily's slippers and then went to prop open the door.

Alexis wheeled Emily down the hall to the chapel so they could light a candle and say a prayer for Zander, who was hanging on to dear life.

"He thinks alot of you, Alexis." Emily said as she sat with Alexis staring at the lit candles.

"I know he does, and I think alot of him."

The two of them sat and each saying a little prayer for Zander, and Alexis thought, if miracles were real and really did happen, she had hoped that one of those miracles would happen for Zander now.

    In the ER --

Ric walked into the waiting room of the ER where he had told his mother to meet him, she not knowing the hospital, he wanted to be sure she wouldn't get lost, the ER was the best place for them to meet. As he rounded the nurse's station, he saw Elenore sitting in the chairs waiting for him. He walked up to her and she stood up to greet him with a hug.

"How is he?" she asked as Ric held her in his arms.

"We don't know, he's in surgery."

    "Emily? Does she know?"

"Alexis and I told her a short time ago, she took the news as I expected she would."

"Take me to her, please, Ric."

    Emily's hospital room --

Ric did as his mother asked and walked with her back to Emily's room. When they arrived, the room was empty. The guard outside Emily's room told Ric that Alexis had taken her to the chapel. Ric and his mother walked down the corridor towards the chapel, in the hopes of finding Emily there with Alexis.

    In the hospital chapel --

Emily and Alexis sat in the first pew, Emily leaning on her for support, and neither had heard Ric and Elenore enter the chapel. They walked up to Emily and Alexis, Emily looking up to see Elenore standing there with her arms open. With Ric's help, Emily stood up from the pew and embraced Zander' s mother.

"I'm so sorry, Emily." Elenore said softly.

"I know, but Zander's going to be okay, he has to be."

"We should be getting you back to your room, you know the doctor still has you on bedrest." Alexis reminded Emily and she nodded in agreement.

Ric helped Emily back into the wheelchair and pushed her back to her room, Elenore and Alexis following close behind.

    Emily's hospital room --

The four of them waited in Emily's room, for what seemed like hours, until they had heard anything about Zander. Ric decided not to wait, he went looking to find someone who could give him some answers, leaving Elenore and Alexis with Emily.

Ric walked out into the hallway, where he was met by Bobbie who was returning from the OR, to discuss with Emily, Zander's condition.

"So ..... how is he?" Ric asked anxious to hear about his brother.

Bobbie didn't say anything, just led the way back to Emily's room, where the others were waiting. "I think it's best I tell all of you together." Bobbie finally spoke as she and Ric stood outside Emily's room.

Emily sat herself up in the bed when she saw Bobbie enter her room with Ric leading. He held back and Bobbie went to Emily's side, she had a somber look on her face, and Emily knew it wasn't good news.

    The hospital lounge --

"The short version ... Jason's been stealing product from me, Lorenzo was trying to kill me. Someone took a shot at Emily earlier and I stormed off looking for him, thinking it was Jason. I get to the penthouse, and Lorenzo is waiting for me. Now I didn't know it was Lorenzo who was out to kill me, I was thinking it was Jason. Marcus called up to the apartment, said Jason was on his way up. The storm knocked out the power to the building and it went black. Jason shot Lorenzo in the shoulder, thinking it was me. Marcus came up the back way and saved my butt again. Marcus shot Lorenzo, Ric busted in the door and shot Jason in the shoulder. After it was over, the police had Jason in custody, he went for the officer's gun and shot me in the shoulder."

"So you never fired a shot at Jason nor at Lorenzo?"

"Marcus fired the bullet that killed Lorenzo, but I should of taken Jason out when I had the chance."

    "Emily?"

"Yeah pretty much. Jason and she are close and I didn't want to take him away from her, she would of never forgiven me for that."

"So, he shot at you with a police issued weapon?"

"Yeah, Ric saved my hide. Marcus called 911 after the police officers took Jason away in cuffs."

    "So what started all this?"

"Not what, who. Greg, I guess wanted to make a name for himself. I don't really know, Alexis."

    "Well, where's Greg now?"

    "I took care of Greg."

"Oh .... okay well, we won't mention Greg then."

"Ric already knows about Greg and his involvement, I'm sure."

"Probably right about that. I'm sure you don't have to worry about Jason, he never says much of anything."

Zander chuckled. "Yeah, Jason just wants to see me dead so he can take the territory I got. Which is why 3 of my warehouses are no more and product has gone missing."

"Well, we'll have to make statement to Mac, he's not going to let up about this till you do."

"Yeah I know. Just not sure how I can without getting myself 10 to 20."

"Let me worry about that. Come on, there's no time like the present. Get this over with and you can spend the rest of the night with Emily."

Zander and Alexis left the lounge, followed close behind by the officers that Mac had instructed to bring Zander in to the PCPD. They all boarded the elevator and headed to the police station to make a statement.

    The PCPD Squad Room---

Alexis and Zander walked into the squad room, Mac and Ric waiting for them. Mac showed Alexis and her client the interrogation room for privacy. Ric followed close behind and closed the door after he was the last one into the room.

"So ... ready to make that statement now?" Mac asked as he laid down on the metal table a yellow legal pad and pen.

"What do I get in return?" Zander asked.

"Now you want a deal too?" Mac replied not believing Zander's request.

"What my client means is that if he gives you a statement of what happened tonight, he doesn't want any charges filed against him." Alexis spoke up.

"Tell us what happened and then we'll talk deals." Mac replied as he pushed the tablet and pen towards Zander.

Zander and Alexis exchanged glances, she offered a shake of the head not to write a statement.

"Okay .... let's start off with an easy question ...." Mac not able to finish his thought because he was interrupted.

"Wait, do you want a statement or are you planning on interrogating my client, Mac?"

"Well, he's not giving us the statement, Ms. Davis, so I guess we'll move to the next step which would be interrogation."

Zander looked once more to Alexis for answers. She leaned in and told him, he could answer questions that Mac had in mind, until she told him not to.

    "What's your question, Mac?"

"Do you know this man, Zander?" Mac asked as he pulled a mug shot from the file folder he was holding. He placed the photo face up and slid it towards Zander to look at.

"You know I do Mac. It's one of my guards, Greg." Zander answered, unsure where Mac was going with this line of questions.

"When was the last time you saw Greg?"

    "A few days ago, why?"

"You're not at all concerned when one of your men doesn't show up for work?" Mac pressed on for answers.

"Look, Greg had some personal stuff going on, he took a few days off."

"Are you sure?" Mac asked wanting to lead Zander into the answers Mac wanted to hear.

"Where are you going with this Mac?" Alexis stepped in. "Zander already told you that Greg asked for time off."

Mac laid down another photograph on the table, face up. This time a picture of Greg when they found him dead in his car a few miles outside of town.

"So you have no idea how Greg ended up dead, do you?"

"Don't answer that, Zander." Alexis instructed as she turned over the photograph of Greg behind the wheel of his car.

"My client isn't answering anymore questions for you Mac, unless there is a deal somewhere on the table." she added and Mac turned and looked at Ric who stood off in the corner waiting for that moment.

"Can we have a minute, Mac?" Ric requested.

Mac agreed with Ric's request and left the interrogation room, leaving Ric alone with Alexis and Zander. "Don't make me regret this ...." Ric said as he took a few steps towards the door of the interrogation room. Zander wondering what he meant.

"You know you could lose your job because of this." Alexis said as she approached Ric.

"Yeah I know, but I could of lost it numerous times before I didn't."

"You're willing to take that chance Ric?" Alexis asked as she stood next to him.

Zander stood up from his seat and approached them. "Care to let me in on what's going on?"

Before he got an answer, Alexis had guided him out the door quickly. She didn't want tell Zander anything till they were outside of the PCPD and away from any ears that may be listening.

"Now you want to tell what that was all about?" Zander asked as the two of them stood on the steps of the police station.

"You're brother is about to save your ass again, and this time he's risking everything to do it."

    At the cabin --

Darkness had soon fallen around the cabin, as they enjoyed each other's company in front of a roaring fire, and two glasses of wine. She had gotten up from the sofa and took the afghan from the rocker in the corner and brought it back to wrap herself in as they watched the crackle of the fire in the stone fireplace. He leaned in and brushed his lips against hers, a kiss so gentle, so sweet. Her lips parted and invited him in as the kiss became more passionate. It deepened as she left out a moan of pleasure that echoed within him. She straddled his lap, and began to nuzzle his neck, his hands caressing her back, he pulled her to him, her hair falling around his face as their mouths met once more.

His kisses traveled down her neck as he began to unbutton her blouse. She watched him fumble with the buttons in the dim light of the roaring fire. She reached up with her hands and helped him remove the blouse from her, revealing to him a pink lace bra, her rounded breasts overfilled the lacey material that formed around them. He began leaving his kisses on her neck once more and led a trail down between her perfectly round mounds. It had been too long since he had her so close to him, he wanted to taste every inch of her beautiful body.

She got up slowly from his lap, leaving him wanting more, and grabbing the pillows from the chair and placing them on the floor in front of the fireplace along with the blankets that she found in an old cedar chest in the corner. She spread out the blankets and threw the pillows on top, then reached for his hand. He took her hand in his and walked towards her. He took her in his arms, their mouths met once more as they went to their knees, he laying her gently on her back. He stood up and slowly removed the shirt he was wearing, revealing to her the white gauze bandages that only reminded her of what they had left behind.

She was so beautiful in the soft amber glow of the fire that raged on in the fireplace, he knelt down to be with her on the blankets and she invited him to her, opening her legs to him. He laid his hips between her thighs, she could feel him underneath his trousers. He began to rub against her which aroused her as she caressed him, being careful of his healing wounds.

"Are you sure?" she asked as she looked down at the bandages.

"Yeah I'll be fine..." his words drifted off as his lips met hers and she started to remove the pants he was wearing.

A night of lovemaking was apparent as they continued to explore each other with the tenderness and gentleness of touches and caresses. As the fire raged on in the fireplace, the fire within them, burned passionately, as they once again became one.

    Fade to black

At the hospital -- Jason's room

As Zander and Emily shared a night of passion, Elizabeth sat by her husband's bedside holding his hand and hoping that he'd be stronger in the morning so the doctors can go in and get the bullet that was lodged close to his spine. She had been sitting with him night after night for the past 3 weeks, hoping that the next day would be the day for the doctors to make him well again. Sonny and Carly both had visited on numerous occasions, both together and separately. Both concerned for her and Jason.

It was now close to 2am and he had been down for a very long sleep, Monica had given him something for the pain he was feeling and it knocked him out. He had been heavily medicated since had been brought in that fateful night that turned their lives upside down. She held much anger about what had happened and blamed only one person for it, and that was Zander.

Jason began to wake up from his long sleep, and he woke her up by caressing the back of her head as it laid on the edge of the bed. She looked up at him and he cracked a smile, even that took some strength for him to do. She quickly went out to the ICU nurse's desk to let them know he was awake. He reached for her as she walked back in the door, followed closely behind by the night duty nurse, Judy. She checked his vitals and wrote down the numbers that she saw on the machines.

"He's stronger, right .. he's getting better." Elizabeth was hopeful that tonight was the night that Jason would be strong enough to sustain the surgery needed to remove the bullet that came from Zander's gun.

"I don't know yet, let me check with the doctor on call." Judy replied as she headed for the door.

"No, I want Drs. Quartermaine to look at him, no on call doctor." Elizabeth wanted only the best for her husband, and Monica and Alan were the best GH had on staff.

"Okay, Mrs. Morgan, I'll give them a call." Judy replied before she left the room and went back to her desk.

Jason squeezed her hand and she turned and looked down at him. His eyes filled with worry and fear about his condition and what was going on around him.

"What's .. going on?" he asked as she sat back down on the swivel chair next to his bed.

"The duty nurse is calling your parents to see if they can come in and check to see if you're strong enough to do the surgery you need." Elizabeth explained as she noticed his lips were dry and he had become very pale.

She reached behind her and took the styrofoam cup filled with ice chips. She took one from the cup and rubbed it across his lips to moisten them. He opened his mouth and the melting chip fell into the opening.

"You weren't suppose to take it." she giggled and he cracked a smile. "Sorry, I'm thirsty." he managed to say as she reached in the cup for another ice chip. "These are all Monica gave me to give to you, sorry." she apologized to him because she couldn't give him water in a cup to drink.

As she rubbed the second ice chip on his lips, he once again opened his mouth and it fell in against his tongue. As the chip melted he swallowed what little water there was left after most of it seeped into his dry mouth.

She didn't know how much time had passed and she was still waiting for Jason's parents to arrive. She began to pace the room back and forth as Jason watched her from his lying down position. He had been in a hospital bed for the last 3 weeks, and he too was getting stir crazy in the enclosed room, machines hooked to him, medication every 2 hours or so, all he wanted to do was to hold his wife in his arms.

Elizabeth heard familiar voices out in the hallway and went to see if Monica and Alan had shown up. As she left the room, she saw Drs. Quartermaine talking with the night duty nurse about Jason's vitals. Elizabeth approached them hoping that Jason could finally have the surgery they had been waiting to do.

"So .. is he strong enough to do the surgery?" Elizabeth asked

"Yeah his vitals look good. We're calling in the surgeon to remove the bullet and we'll prep Jason for surgery." Monica said in a soothing voice, trying to keep Elizabeth from worrying.

As Elizabeth stood outside the room peering through the large plexiglass window, she watched as the duty nurses prep'd her husband for surgery. She folded her hands and said a little prayer as they brought Jason out of his room on the gurney.

She stopped them as they rolled him passed her.

"I'll be right here waiting for you, when you come back." she said as she took his hand in hers and held it tight. He cracked a smile and she kissed him gently. "I love you ...." were her last words to him as the orderlies rolled him down the hall towards the surgical wing.

"He's going to be fine, Elizabeth. Dr. Thomas is the best we have on staff here at the hospital. And I'll be scrubbing as well, so I'll be with him every step of the way." Elizabeth softly smiled and felt somewhat better knowing that Monica would be with Jason during his surgery. "We'll keep you updated as much as we can." Monica added before she walked down the same hallway and through the same double doors towards the surgical wing.

Alan took Elizabeth to the waiting area outside the ICU and sat with her, duration of Jason's surgery.

    The Courthouse--

As Zander stood with Emily talking with Alexis and Ric, he could feel Sonny's eyes piercing through him. His attorney came over to the table and congratulated Ric on a job well done. Ric accepted her hand and shook it graciously. Sonny got up from his chair and rubbed against Zander as he passed him on the way out of the courtroom. Zander glared in Sonny's direction as he walked out the door.

"I can't believe him. He now knows that he is my father and still has no words for me." Zander said angered by Sonny's demeanor towards him.

"You weren't expecting fatherly love from Sonny, were you?" Ric replied as he put some papers back in his briefcase.

"No but I was expecting some acknowledgment to the fact that he's my father."

"Come on, let's go grab some lunch at Kelly's, this might take a while for the Grand Jury to re-conveen." Alexis suggested as she passed behind Ric and headed towards the double doors of the courtroom.

"I want to call my parents first and check on Devon." Emily said as she and Zander followed Alexis out into the hallway, Ric bringing up the rear as he grabbed his briefcase from the table and followed.

Emily called her parents and checked on Devon as Alexis and Zander along with Ric talked amongst themselves for a few minutes till she finished her conversation on the phone. Zander gave her a look of concern when she re-joined them.

"He's fine. Alice is reading him his favorite story." Emily smiled and the four of them walked out of the courthouse onto the front steps and noticed the media frenzy that was gathering at the bottom of the cement stairs. Ric led the way around the reporters and the rest followed quietly not wanting to bring attention to themselves as they bypassed the chaos that was apparently waiting for them.

    Kelly's Diner --

As they walked into Kelly's, Emily noticed Elizabeth at the counter and excused herself from the group to go and talk with her friend.

"Hey." Emily said as she came up behind Elizabeth.

"Hey. Big day in court for you guys, so I hear." Elizabeth replied as she glanced over to the table that occupied Zander, Alexis, and Ric.

"How's Jason?" Emily asked concerned for her brother and trying to avoid the conversation about Sonny and Zander.

"He's doing fine. It's going to take some time till he's 100 percent but he's getting along just fine. He misses you, you know."

"I know, and I miss him too. I will make a point of it to call him, it's just that with all that's going on right now .. well, you know." Emily replied she disappointed in herself for not taking the time to keep in touch with her brother.

"I know and Jason understands, I'm sure. I gotta get back to the penthouse, I don't like to leave him alone for too long." Elizabeth answered as she grabbed the take out food she ordered in her hand.

"Okay, well tell Jason that I'll call him, and soon." Emily reminded Elizabeth before she walked out the door of the diner. Emily re-joined Zander at the table.

Penny came shortly and took their lunch orders. She poured some coffee in the cups that were on the table for them while they waited for their food. Emily noticed the looks exchanged between Ric and Alexis and began to wonder just how close they really were getting.

"So what's really going on between the two of you?" she asked bluntly.

Alexis's eyes widened at Emily's boldness and looked at Ric as he shrugged off the question asked. "There's nothing going on, why would you ask that?" Alexis replied wondering herself where the question came from. She didn't think it was so obvious that there was more to the courtroom antics between them.

Ric snickered at the thought of he and Alexis becoming more then what they already were, which was nothing more then colleagues.

"And what are you smirking about? There isn't anything going on between us." Alexis repeated.

"I was just thinking of the thought of us together, you know *that way*." he chuckled. "It's a ridiculous idea." he added as Alexis folded her arms in front of her.

"You got that right, utterly ridiculous." she agreed.

"Uh huh." Emily smiled at the two of them, still thinking there was more to them then they were letting on.

The four of them sat and ate lunch together, they had a few hours to fill, Ric figured. The Grand Jury could take a while to return their decision, so they spent their time at the diner. As they finished up, the ringing of Ric's cell phone could be heard from his jacket pocket. He reached in and flipped it open to answer it.

"Okay, we'll be right there." he said then flipped it close again. "The Grand Jury is re-convening in 20 minutes." he added before taking on last sip of his coffee. He reached into his pocket and pulled out enough bills to pay for lunch and they all walked out of the diner together.

    Jason's hospital room

Elizabeth sat with Jason as Monica jotted down his current vitals in his file. Her concern for husband was apparent when she asked Monica how he was doing.

"He's getting stronger and that's always a good sign." Monica replied and touched her gently on the shoulder as reassurance.

"When will he wake up?" Elizabeth asked as she caressed Jason's hand.

"It shouldn't be long now. You can talk to him, he should respond to your voice. But don't force him to wake up, he'll come around on his own." Monica left Elizabeth and Jason by closing the door behind her.

She peered through the glass window at her son who was in critical yet stable condition. Alan's strong arms came up from behind her and embraced her.

"He's going to be alright." he said trying to reassure her. Monica sniffled back the tears and leaned back into him.

"You cannot guarantee me that, Alan" she replied as she turned into him and held him close.

"No, I can't but I can tell you that Jason is strong, and he's a fighter. You have to believe that." Her motherly tears moistened Alan's white coat as they stood outside their son's room.

Since that fateful day many years ago, they had truly tried to be parents to Jason Morgan, yet he fought so hard to dismiss their affections. Even though they were not as close as they would of liked to be with Jason, he was still their son.

Elizabeth spoke no truer words to her husband as he lye lifeless in the drab sheets of the hospital bed. She hoping that her soft voice would bring him back to her. He began to stir, she could feel the grip of his hand grow stronger with every word she spoke. A few brief moments past, and his eyes fluttered open slightly. She breathed a sigh of relief and said a little prayer of thanks for bringing him back to her. She turned and noticed Alan and Monica standing outside the room observing what had happened between her and Jason.

"Dr. Quartermaines'! It's Jason .... I think he's waking up!" she stated overly excited about seeing Jason awaken from his medicated state.

"Okay, okay .... let's check him out. It could be his body reacting." Alan said as he pulled out his light pen and checked Jason's eye reflexes.

Jason stirred a little more and moaned groggily. His dry mouth inhibited him from speaking, but his eyes worked well as he noticed Elizabeth sitting by his side with the smile he loved so much. As Alan checked Jason reflexes to stimulants, Jason's eyes adjusted to the bright lights of the hospital room.

Elizabeth's soothing voice reassured him of where he was and what was happening to him.

"All looks good, Jason. Reflexes are all normal." Jason held his hand at his side and grimaced as he tried to re-position himself.

"Okay, Jason .... " Monica said as she tried to prevent him from moving.

"You're going to have lie still ... we don't want you moving around." she continued as Jason moaned in disgust.

"Jason, you gotta listen to the doctors ... okay?" Elizabeth said trying to convince him he had to do what he was told.

He tried to speak but the breathing tube was causing an obstruction, so Alan explained to him that it needed to be removed before he tried to speak. Jason nodded that he understood and Alan went on about how they would remove it.

"On the count of three, Jason ....okay?" Jason nodded again that he understood and in one fluid motion the tube was removed from his throat. He coughed as it exited his mouth, his voice hoarse, and rough, but it was a relief to be rid of the machine.

"Now, can .... can I have a ... drink of ... water?" Jason asked in his rough voice. Alan smiled and chuckled.

"Yeah, you can have a drink of water." Monica handed the white paper cup filled with water to Elizabeth and she stuck a straw in it for him to drink from.

The water cold, it was irritating to the raw membranes of Jason's throat. He coughed as he tried to swallow the wetness.

"Easy ... it'll take some time for your throat to heal. Take your time." Monica replied as Jason handed the cup back to his wife.

Jason rubbed his throat with his hand in a soothing motion and tried to speak a few more words.

"What .... *cough* .. what happened?" The three of them looked at each other and then at Jason ..

"You don't remember?" Elizabeth asked. Jason turned his head and looked at his wife.

"No ... tell me ..." he replied as he swallowed hard trying to relieve some the rawness in his throat.

    At the PCPD

Lt. Taggert sat relaxed in his leather desk chair with his feet propped up on his mahogany desk looking over a case file that was given to him that afternoon.

"Damn it! Another mob shootout! This needs to stop, and stop now!" he said loudly to himself as he got up from his chair and headed towards the door. He opened the door with purpose only to find a young man standing on the other side.

"Lt. Taggert?" Taggert looked sternly at the young stranger and sighed in disgust.

"Yeah, who the heck are you?" he replied as the young man passed him and entered his office. Taggert closed the door and looked over the young stranger who barged in unannounced.

A rough, rugged young man in blue jeans, a tee shirt, and a hooded sweatshirt jacket, certainly not someone who looked like any importance.

"Lt. Taggert, I'm Det. Jake Steel from the Miami Police Department." said the stranger as he extended his hand to Taggert.

Taggert shook his hand and then passed by him throwing the file in his hand on the desk. He quickly turned around asked why he was there.

"Well, Sir ... it seems my investigation has led me here to Port Charles and I'm hoping you can help me." the Detective replied as he took a step toward Taggert.

Taggert intrigued by this young man, he offered him a seat and asked what kind of help he was looking for.

    EPISODE 35

    Zander's hospital room --

"I think you need to see this ...." Ric said as he sprinted into Zander's room and turned on the TV set that hung in the corner of the room.

    "Wait, weren't you ..."

"Yeah, yeah in a minute, you have to see this ..." Ric replied as he turned the channel to the news coverage about the explosion down on the docks.

"The mob wars got a shot in the arm tonight as a warehouse, down here on Pier 53, was destroyed by an explosion earlier tonight. The building owned my local business man, Zander Smith, is now nothing more then a heap of ashes. Eye witnesses say that the flames from this fire, shot over a hundred feet in the air and could be seen across town. Zander Smith, himself, a victim of an alleged mob hit a last week, is re-cooperating at General Hospital. There is no word as to what ignited this explosion, and we will be continuing our coverage of this fire. As details become available, we will pass them along to you."

Zander pushed the blankets from him and tried to get out of the hospital bed he was lying in.

"Hey woah you're not going anywhere." Ric rushed to his brother's bedside to keep him in bed.

"You don't expect me lie here and take this, do you?" Zander replied as Ric pulled the blankets back up over Zander.

"You'd never get 5 feet from this bed in your condition, Zander!"

"Don't you dare try and stop me, Ric! I have two men down there!"

Ric sighed heavily, he knew Zander was bound and determined to fight his own battles, but he was in no shape to do any of it. Ric backed off and watched as Zander tried to stand up, he wincing in pain as he did so.

"Zander please! You are in no condition to go fighting this battle by yourself!"

"What do you suggest I do, Ric?! They blew up my warehouse!"

"Yeah and your damn lucky it wasn't you!"

Zander was exhausted just trying to get out of bed, he unsteadily sat back down. Zander realized he wasn't going anywhere. The pain was too unbearable. He laid back down in the hospital bed and Ric helped him with the blankets.

"Now, are you going to listen to me?"

    "No, I'm not."

"You are so stubborn, you know that?"

    Zander smirked at Ric's comment.

"I can't very well run my business from this hospital bed, Ric. The longer I stay here, the more vulnerable I become."

"Well you can't very well go anywhere, at least not for a while. You'll have to up security."

"I thought you had Alcazar in custody? What the hell happened?"

"We do .... he's in lock up."

"Then who the hell blew up my warehouse, Ric?!"

Ric shrugged, not knowing the answer that Zander was looking for.

"Morgan. That son of a bitch blew up my warehouse!"

"You don't really know for sure it was Jason."

"Look, if it wasn't Lorenzo, then who else could it of been?!"

Ric and Zander contemplated who would of destroyed the warehouse and its contents before being interrupted by two of Zander's men.

"Sir .... it was Morgan." Marcus exclaimed as he and Frank unsteadily walked into Zander's room. Ric assisting Marcus to the chair, and he sat down, while Frank balanced himself against the doorframe.

Marcus and Frank both covered in black soot from the explosion, both had noticeable cuts and abrasions. "Are the two of you alright?" Zander asked as he propped himself up to get a better look at his men.

"Yeah we're fine. We scrambled out of there before the emergency crews showed up."

"How do you know it was Morgan who blew up the warehouse?"

"We saw his limos parked out back in the alley. They were gone before we got closer and then ..... up in smoke it all went."

"Do you believe it now, Ric?! It was Morgan and I will not just sit here and do nothing!"

"Zander let the police handle this, please."

"You just didn't ask me to let the police handle it, did you?"

"Zander they can prosecute Morgan, he'll do 10 to 15 for this!"

"You know damn well he will not even get past the grand jury, Ric! No .. I have to handle this myself, Ric .... Morgan just made it a little more personal!"

"Speaking of personal .... what is Emily going to say about you taking out her brother?" Ric asked, none of them noticing that Emily sat just outside the doorway in a wheelchair and she was listening to the banter.

"You're going to do what?!" Emily spoke up from just outside the door. Frank let her pass and she wheeled herself into her husband's room.

"I think this is our cue, Frank ...." Marcus said as he saw the glare Emily gave him to leave. Marcus and Frank left Zander's room and waited out in the hallway for further instructions.

"I will let you handle this one, Zander." Ric said as he backed out of the room slowly, leaving Zander alone in the room with a scowling Emily.

"What are you thinking?!" Emily demanded from Zander.

"I'm thinking of keeping my family safe and with Morgan still around, you and the children are not safe!"

"Let me talk with him, Zander .. Jason listens to me. I can get him to back off."

"He almost killed Marcus and Frank .. not too mention he blew up my building! I am not letting you get near him, Em!"

"He's my brother! He wouldn't hurt me!"

"He wouldn't? For all we know he hired the guy who put you in the hospital in the first place!"

    "Zander, you know .."

"No, Em .. I don't .. I don't anything for sure. And I'm not taking any more risks with my family! You are not going to see Jason and that's final!"

"You are impossible you know that?!"

"Yeah I do, but when it comes to you and the children, I have to be! I cannot let you put your life at risk any more, we almost lost the baby once because of this business, I am not going to put you or the baby at risk again!"

"I have body guards at my door 24 hours a day, nothing is going to happen to me or this baby."

"And nothing is going to happen if you stay away from Jason!"

Emily sank in the wheelchair, tired of arguing with her husband who obviously was not going to give in to her talking to Jason. She laced her fingers together across her 7 month belly and looked up at him.

"Okay ....." she caved to his rules.

    "Okay what?" he replied.

"Okay I won't ask to see Jason."

    "Promise."

"Yes I promise. I'll let you handle it."

    "Thank you." Zander smiled.

Zander reached his hand out to her, she took it in hers and caressed it. "You trust me, don't you?" Zander asked.

    "Of course, I do."

"And you know I love you, and I will do anything to protect you. Even if it means taking out Jason."

Emily looked up at Zander. She knew he would protect her and the children at all costs, she had no doubts. He had always been her protector and she could depend on him to keep her safe. She had always known this day would come, the day when she had to watch her husband order the hit on her brother, Jason .... but it didn't make it any easier.

The power still out, once in a while the lightening dimly lit up the room. Marcus and Zander were coming up with a plan of their own. Zander was grateful to have Marcus with him, he hadn't expected Lorenzo in this fight, so he was glad for the back up. Marcus peered out from behind the cabinet, where he had been taking cover and saw a dark shadow move across the floor. It was either Lorenzo or Morgan, Marcus didn't care which, and he fired at the moving target. A loud thud could be heard as the body hit the floor.

"One down, one to go." Marcus replied. "We just might get out of this alive." he added.

Gunfire returned from across the room, Marcus ducking behind the cabinet just as the bullet whizzed on by him. The coffee pot shattering from the bullet's impact.

"Morgan .... show yourself, dammit!" Zander called out from behind the cabinet.

    "So you can kill me?!"

"That's the general idea ... yeah! You tried to kill me more then once, you crazy son of a bitch!"

"Lorenzo was the one who tried to kill you, Zander!"

"I guess the last attempt on Emily was Lorenzo too, huh?! You could of killed her and your nephew!"

"Zander, what are you talking about?! I'd never go after Emily!"

"You did take a shot at Emily at the hospital earlier?"

"For the last time ... No! The order didn't come from me, Zander!"

Zander now confused as to who would of ordered a hit on his wife, if it wasn't Jason or Lorenzo. Marcus equally drawing a blank.

"You don't think Greg did, do you?" Marcus asked.

"Greg? I thought you guys took care of Greg?"

"We did ... but he may have had time to hire someone to do it. He knowing he didn't have long for this world."

"Yeah but that's just it, why would he, if he knew he wouldn't be around to enjoy the comforts of what it would get him?"

"No else in town is there?"

"Not that I know of." Zander answered before calling out to Morgan once again.

    "Morgan!"

"Still here and still bleeding!" Jason replied.

    "Is Lorenzo dead?"

"I don't know, why don't you come out here and find out!" Jason suggested.

The power in the penthouse suddenly came back on and Jason peered up from the corner he was hidden. He was holding his shoulder with his hand to add pressure to his wound, as he got up and went to the couch. His gun still tightly held in his hand, as he sat down on the couch. Marcus looked up from behind the cabinet and saw Jason sitting on the couch. He nudged Zander and Zander took a look.

    "Giving up, Morgan?"

"Not till you're dead! What the hell did you shoot me with, a damn cannon?!" he replied as he checked out his wound.

Marcus peered out from behind the kitchen cabinet, cautiously and noticed Jason sitting on the couch. He slid back down quickly to get out of sight as an other shot was fired in their direction. Zander heard the front door open and another shot fired, breaking the glassware that sat on the bar.

"Put it down Morgan!" Ric said as he stepped into the apartment, holding a gun on Jason.

Jason put the gun down on the table in front of him as Zander and Marcus emerged from the kitchen, their guns still drawn on Jason.

"What the hell happened here?" Ric said as he walked towards Jason on the couch.

"Just a little misunderstanding." Zander replied as he got up from the floor after checking Lorenzo, who laid lifeless behind the door.

Jason got up from the couch and went to Zander. "You could of killed me, why didn't you?"

"You can thank Emily for that. She'd never forgive me if I killed you, Jason."

Police officers were standing out in the hallway, and were allowed in to arrest Jason.

"Take him down town, but after he's looked at for that wound in his shoulder." Ric replied.

"So what about Lorenzo?" Ric added as he saw Lorenzo lying on the floor.

Zander knelt down next to Lorenzo and rolled Lorenzo towards him.

    "Payback's a bitch, Lorenzo."

Out of no where, a finally shot was heard .... Zander fell back against the couch ...

Jason grinned from the doorway holding a police revolver in his hand. "Yeah .. but I'm last one standing."

    EPISODE 28

    Zander's ICU Room --

Ric had heard that Zander had woke up and rushed to his brother's bedside. He found Alexis and his mother standing outside the room, their noses pressed against the plexi-glass window, just watching Zander with Emily.

"Hey, I got here as quickly as I could." Ric said to Alexis when he arrived.

"Any word on who did this?" she asked as Ric tried to catch is breath.

"We don't have anyone in custody yet, but we're pretty sure on who it was. It's just a matter of time before we catch him."

Alan approached them and asked to speak with Zander before Ric went in to talk with him. Ric agreed and Alan entered Zander's room.

"So, how are you feeling?" Alan asked as he picked up Zander's chart and reviewed it.

"Like I got hit by a truck." Zander replied and Alan chuckled.

"Yeah that's to be expected after what you've been through. I just stopped by to check on you."

Alan stood at the foot of Zander's bed and pulled back the blankets to reveal his bare feet. It had been quite a few hours since the surgery but Alan wasn't expecting the swelling to go down quickly. "Tell me if you feel anything, okay?"

Emily kept Zander's attention towards her so he couldn't see what Alan was going to do. She had been through these tests before and she knew what was coming, she hoped Zander would feel the pen running up and down the bottom of his foot as she smiled at him.

Alan ran the bottom of his pen light up and down the bottom of Zander's bare foot, and he noticed he flinched at the sensation. Zander smiled and turned to look at Alan.

"You felt that?" Alan said looking for confirmation from Zander.

"Yeah I did. But I also feel some sensations, like tingles in my legs."

"You will for a while, but it's a good sign that you felt the pen light on the bottom of your feet. The tingling will subside, as the swelling surrounding your spinal cord goes down, you'll get more and more feeling back in your legs and feet. I think right now it's safe to say that you will make a full recovery." Alan explained.

While the blanket was pulled up, and Zander's feet exposed, Alan asked him to wiggle his toes. Alan wanted to make sure he had the movement as well as the feelings. Zander did what Alan asked him to, and he smiled.

"Yeah, you're gonna be just fine. But we still need you to get some rest. It's going to be the best medicine for you right now and try not to move around too much, you have many stitches in you, and I don't want you opening them up. I'll check back later." Alan said and then left the room, the family waiting to hear Zander's prognosis.

"So .... " Elenore began waiting for Alan to tell them what they had hoped to hear.

"Zander's going to be just fine. But he needs his rest, so let's try to keep the visitors to a minimum." Alan suggested.

Alan left the family and went on his rounds, as Ric stepped into the doorway and Emily turned to see him standing there. She motioned for him to come and Zander saw his brother standing at the foot of the bed.

"Hey little brother." Ric said as Emily wheeled herself out of the way, so Ric could get closer.

"Hey .. you've been here the whole time?"

"Actually I've been chasing down the bad guys."

"Oh, well you didn't have to go to far..." Zander replied, referring to himself as being one of them.

"Yeah well, I was chasing down the bad guys who shot you and Thomas."

"And ... did you catch 'em?" Emily asked.

"Not yet, but we're close. We're pretty sure who contracted the hit, it's just a matter of following the paper trail to lead us to the trigger man."

Zander winced as he tried to push himself up on the bed. "I had never seen the guy before, so who ever hired him certainly knew that I had been hauled in and was sitting waiting for me and Thomas to come out of the PCPD."

"Well, according to what we recovered at the scene, which wasn't much, we determined this guy was a professional."

"Yeah but professionals usually don't work with anyone else, Ric. I heard a car leave the scene."

"True, but if the person who hired the gunman to kill you, wanted to see his work, don't you think he'd make sure he had a front row seat for the show?"

"The only person who would gain from this is Lorenzo Alcazar."

"Yes but there are also those who work for Morales, they would have much to gain by having you dead."

"I'm thinking that the person who shot at Emily is the same person who shot me."

Ric shrugged. "Makes sense. Thing is this person isn't the mind behind the operation, there are bigger fish beyond him, he's just the guy who they hired to take you out."

It suddenly got very crowded in Zander's room, as Dr. Meadows came looking for her patient. "Emily, I think it's time for you to get back to bed. You and your baby need your rest too."

Zander still weak and growing tired, reached for his wife. Ric stepped out of the way so Emily could get closer to her husband.

"You do what the doctor tells you, okay?" he said hoping she'd listen to him.

    "Yeah but ..."

"No buts ... you and the baby need your rest. I'll be fine. I don't want you to worry, okay." Zander smiled and reached up his hand and caressed her face.

Emily nodded in agreement. She knew he was right, she did have to take care of herself and their baby and she was getting a little tired. She kissed the palm of his hand and smiled. "I love you, so much."

"I love you too, baby.." Zander replied as Ric took a hold of the handle bars on the wheel chair and pulled Emily from his reach, their hands still reaching for one another.

Dr. Meadows followed Ric and Emily out of Zander's room, Zander watching his wife leave his side and his mother enter the room after her.

"Care for some company?" Elenore said as she sat down next to her son.

"I would love it if you'd sit with me till I fall asleep?" Zander remembered how his mom used to tuck him in bed at night when he was a kid. She used to sit with him till he fell asleep, sometimes. Having her near him was always a comforting feeling for him.

    "Sure...." she smiled.

Zander smiled and closed his eyes, he was more exhausted then he thought, and soon he was sleeping peacefully, while his mother sat by his side and held his hand, just like she used to.

    Emily's hospital room --

"I want you to get some rest now, Emily." Dr. Meadows instructed her very pregnant patient.

Ric helped Emily from the wheel chair to the bed and tucked her. She smiled at his bedside manner and laid her head back against the soft plush pillows.

"Thanks Ric ..." Emily said and she yawned.

Ric smiled in return and walked towards the door as if to leave but turned around ready to say something. "We're going to get him, you know?"

"I'm sure you will do everything you can to catch them."

"I promise you right now, we will catch them and they will pay for this."

Emily was confident in Ric's abilities as an officer of the court, she knew when he said they'd pay for shooting Zander, he meant it and he wouldn't rest until all those involved were in prison for a very long time.

    Zander's Penthouse --

Daylight soon came over the horizon of the bay, and Zander awoke to the ring of his cell phone that was tucked away in his jacket pocket which hung on the back of the chair. He slowly slipped from the bed and tried to keep his balance as he walked over to answer it, wincing with every step. He flipped it open and said hello to who was calling.

"Zander? You have company that has been sitting outside the building all night." the voice said as Zander padded out into the hallway with his bare feet.

"Is it Steele?" Zander asked as he walked to the elongated window the looked out over the street.

"Yeah, he's been sitting out here waiting since you got home last night." his brother replied as Zander caught a glimpse of the unmarked car sitting towards the end of the block.

"Why don't you come on in for some coffee and we'll talk about it?" Zander offered and his brother quickly accepted.

A few minutes later Ric was at the door, Zander grabbed his robe and went downstairs. Cord opened the door for Ric just as Zander reached for the door knob. Ric came and threw his jacket over the chair. The two shook hands like brothers should, and walked into the kitchen. Ric took a seat at the kitchen table while Zander made a fresh pot of coffee.

"Emily upstairs?" Ric asked as he glanced up towards the stairs.

"Yes she is, so we have some time to talk about Steel before she comes down and has to feed Devon." Zander poured two cups of coffee and set one cup in front of Ric and kept the other in his hand as he took a seat at the table.

"What did you find out about this Det. Steel?" he inquired as he cautiously took a sip. Ric reached for the packets of sugar that sat on the table and opened a few of them into his cup.

"First, how are you?" Ric concerned about his brother. "I'll live, so what did you find out?" Zander replied bluntly wanting to know more about this Detective.

"Detective Steel? Well, Detective Steele is on a murder case, a cold case that went cold about 2 weeks after it happened. Lack of witnesses, I guess. No leads to go on, so they stashed it in the cold case files. His father worked on the case originally and when he became Detective, he picked it up off the pile and started digging. Apparently the trail as led him to you." Ric explained

"What else did you find out?" Ric sipped his coffee and told Zander as much as he could about the man who was apparently quite interested in his comings and goings.

"So in other words, my family is still ...." Zander snapped at his brother as Emily stood in the doorway with Devon. "....in danger." she continued his thought as she walked passed him and sat Devon in his high chair.

Worry and concern over took Zander and Ric's faces as Emily became a part of their conversation. "Unfortunately, yes that's what it means ... at least until we find out why the trail led this Detective to Zander."

Suddenly there was noise coming from outside in the hallway. Ric rushed to the front door, Zander followed leaving Emily and Devon in the kitchen. The door flew open as Cord had the dark haired stranger by the scruff of the neck, Marcus soon followed close behind.

"I'm sorry sir for barging in but we found this one lurking around, thought you may want to have a word or two with him." Cord explained as he released his grasp with a shove and the stranger stumbled to regain his balance.

"Hey watch the suit!" the stranger said as he adjusted the attire he was wearing. The dark haired stranger was nicely dressed in a dark navy blue suit and tie, Ric had his own suspicions about this Detective but didn't let on to what they were.

Emily peered out from the kitchen to see what was going on, Devon in his high chair waiting to be fed breakfast, she turned and went to give him his morning bottle. She scooped him up in her arms, grabbed the bottle from the table and whisked him out of the kitchen and away from harm as she scurried through the living room and up the stairs, not taking a second look at what was going on right there in front of her.

The dark haired stranger noticed her as she hurried passed them and up the stairs, Zander glared in his direction as the Detective watched Emily disappear at the top of the stairs. "Answer me this, who are you and what are you doing lurking outside this particular building." Zander asked as he winced when he felt some pain around the wounds that were healing.

"So you're Zander Smith." Steele said as he walked towards Zander.

"Yeah now we know who I am, why don't you tell us who you are?" Zander had always had the cockiness when confronted, Ric smirked at his brother's remark.

"I was the stranger that came to see you a few weeks ago in the hospital, I'm sure your lovely wife told you about it." he still evading the question, Zander still not amused with the stranger standing in his living room.

"Why don't you just tell us who you are and why your here?" Ric demanded, he was losing his patience, even if Zander wasn't.

The stranger went to pull his badge from his jacket pocket and Marcus stepped forward, ready to take him down if need be. "Hey, woah .. I'm just reaching for my identification, big guy." he snarked and Marcus backed off a little bit. Steele pulled out his badge and handed it to Zander. Ric grabbed it first and inspected it. Ric didn't really need to see any identification from Steele, he already knew more about Steele then Steele knew about himself.

"The badge still doesn't tell us what you're doing here in Port Charles, especially all the way from Miami." Zander said as he handed the badge back to the Detective.

"Well, ya see, funny story ... I kinda inherited a case .. a murder case, from my father, and though the trail was cold 15 years ago, it's getting alot warmer over the past few months. And it led me to you." Steele answered as Ric and Marcus had words, and Marcus returned to his post outside the door.

Steele noticed the cold eyes Zander had, it was apparent he wasn't about to tell him much of anything about this case. "And see the shooting a few weeks ago, I seem to think that the two are connected somehow. Care to tell me about the how you got shot?" Steele asked as he noticed Zander holding his hand against his side that was bandaged.

"I don't ...." Zander began, but Ric stepped in. "Don't say a word, Zander. Not a word."

"What are you his attorney or something?" Steele asked as Ric came face to face with him.

"As a matter of fact .. yes I am. As of this minute, I'm his attorney of record. Do you have a problem with that Detective?" Ric said sternly.

"You can't do that. That would be a conflict of interest for you ... Mr. Lansing." Steele replied knowing full well who he was talking to.

"And why do you say that, Mr. Steele." Ric answered as Steele grinned.

"Oh yes, you're name came up Mr. Lansing in some of our reports over the past few months, actually having alot to do with your little brother, there. He's been in alot of messes lately." Ric tried to remain calm as he closed the gap between he and the Detective.

"I don't know what you want from Zander, but he isn't talking to you or to any one else about this murder case or about the shooting a few weeks ago. And I suggest, that if you want to keep breathing, you will be leaving this apartment ... in 10 seconds." Ric threatened as Steele became very nervous.

"Did you just threaten me, Mr. Lansing?" Steele asked as his confidence was given a shot in the arm.

"Me? I didn't threaten you, Mr. Steele ... just giving you some friendly advice, is all. Now whether you take it or is up to you." Ric smirked as he smoothed out Steele's suit with his hands. He knew he had Steele squirming in his boots and he was going to enjoy ever minute of it.

Zander stood back and enjoyed the show as he grinned watching his brother do what he did best. If this wasn't proof that he and Ric were related he didn't know what would be.

"Looks to me like you're running out of options, Detective." Ric added as he went to the door and opened it for the officer.

"Looks to me like the two of you will be seeing me again." Ric returned a smirk. "We'll be looking forward to it, Detective."

Steele walked out of the apartment and to the elevators, hearing Ric's last words before the door slammed shut.
