    Barry Sloane interview

This week will see the start of Niall Rafferty's evil revenge plan on his real family, the McQueens. We caught up with Barry Sloane, who plays Niall, to find out about the upcoming explosion storyline...

What was it like filming the explosion scenes in the church?

It was unbelievable, it was some of the best stuff I've ever done and I loved it. It took us six days to complete but it was worth every minute. We did it in a big scary old church with like a priests training school up in Wigan.

Did you all have stunt doubles?

Yeah, mine was about 5'1" and James Sutton's (John Paul) double was about six foot but he was sat down so it looks alright.

Were you pleased with the storyline when the producers told you?

Yeah I haven't seen the final thing yet but, I was so pleased when I heard about the storyline.

It sounds like it's going to be really dramatic but this storyline has been building up for a year hasn't it?

Yeah when I first started all the girls were like 'I can't wait for the climax of this storyline' and I was saying that I'd barely got started on Niall yet. So finally, the people who have put in the time and patience watching the storyline are going to get paid back with this climax and hopefully they'll be pleased with it.

So what about Niall and Steph's relationship, are we going to see them grow closer before the explosion happens? Yeah, well before the church happens it all falls apart because he is caught being aggressive to Tom by shouting and screaming at him and when Steph sees this it all comes to a head.

Does he at any point want to confide in Steph do you think?

No, because I think there wasn't enough time to take the story down that route. Certainly from my point of view I think he'd have confided in Steph but the development of their relationship would have taken too long, we just didn’t have that sort of time scale.

It's quite sad because in the episodes before the church explosion it looks like Niall is turning his life around and he has this happy little family with Tom and Steph and he was settling down.

So will these episodes go out as an hour special?

No but they will be filmed so that the whole week is one day, so the whole week will be about this storyline. It's a really strong week, I'm going to say that, because I'm really proud of it!

  2. Did anyone find some things unintentionally funny (or maybe the writers wanted us to laugh in some serious moments).

Like when Tony and Dom were trying to get into the church and couldn't and Dom says, "Oh God, Please let us in!" His delivery made me laugh.

And then when John Paul, Myra, and Niall were trapped together, and John Paul only wanted to save Myra, but she insisted he save Niall as well. John Paul tells Myra, "But he killed Kieron!" Myra then tells John Paul, "And he'll go to prison for that!" A few seconds after saying how she doesn't want one of her sons killing the other mind you and her delivery also made me laugh.

Hollyoaks star Barry Sloane has claimed he would've got bored if his psychotic soap alter ego had "gone soft".

The 27-year-old actor - who played crazed hairdresser Niall Rafferty - is set to make a dramatic exit from the Channel 4 soap and revealed he wouldn't have wanted to stay if the character had turned over a new leaf.

Niall's exit comes after he kidnapped his half-sisters, The McQueen girls, and their mother and blew them all up on Wednesday night. Viewers are waiting to see who survives.

Barry said: "I would have been disappointed if he'd gone soft. I really like the character but there was only one way the character was going to go."

"If you come in to a soap and play a villain, especially one who is going to kill someone, it's a ticking clock and I would have ended up bored and wanting to leave anyway."

The actor is not sure what he will do next. He said: "It's just the same as ever when you get out of a job, you've got to go for castings and see what comes up. I'm going to meet with my agents and see where they want to push me."

"Obviously if the television awards come along and I get lucky there that will boost my profile a bit and open a few doors for me."

"I'm just happy to be working and as long as I get to act, I'm happy doing anything as it's so demoralising when you're out of work and not being able to do the thing you love."

Viewers can catch the dramatic episodes on Channel 4, weekday evenings at 6.30pm.

  4. Aw, I liked Tina. She could have been a great heroine, IMO.

Why did Myra choose Carmel AND Jacqui? Why not just one?

Niall asked Myra 6 questions (the number of children she has, exclusing himself). She answered 4 wrong. For every question she got wrong, one of the McQueen children would die.

John Paul and Mercedes volunteered to go first.

Niall then forced Myra to pick two others, and she picked Jacqui and Carmel.

I guess she didn't pick Michaela because she's the youngest one and didn't pick Tina because she's a new mother.

  5. OMG, this week was GREAT! Thursday and Friday's episodes are can't miss. Niall is a really sick bastard, but I couldn't help but feel sorry for him when he was in the church with all the McQueen's telling them about how lonely his childhood was and how he didn't feel anything growing up and how being left in the church as a baby scarred him for life.

And it ties nicely into the Jack storyline, as Jack was responsible for sending Niall's father to jail, where he later died. It was nice that Jack risked prison by exposing his identity in public in order to save the McQueen's.

The bomb explosion was very well-done as well. It created lots climaxes and revelations. Mercedes finally admitted to Jacqui that she has a one night stand with Tony a year ago, and John Paul's being held captive was a surprise.

Then there's Tina dying in Dominic's arms and telling him to tell her baby when he grows up that she loved him. :(

I like how Tina and Dom resolved some things in that moment...

And then there's the Friday cliffhanger where it looks like Niall survived when we see his reflection at the end. I have a feeling there's lots more to come from this story. :)

Oh and, when Niall told Myra to choose which children to kill, it had to hurt that she technically chose Jacqui and Carmel, even if she was under pressure. That's sure to create more tension.

  6. ^LOL! You know, I've always thought Emmerdale might be the one UK soap that could catch on in America. Mainly because of its sometimes deeply sensationalistic/ridiculous storytelling.

Anyway, I'd like to thank Bryan Kirkwood for 3 amazing years at Hollyoaks. He revived a show that had crappy actors, directionless storylines, and declining ratings and made it something truly special. He was able to get this show taken seriously again, and he created storylines that were powerful and riveting. Whatever he does next, I'll be following him. It's because of him I fell in love with Hollyoaks, and I'll never forget that.

I can't help by think that Lucy Allan will start off promising but screw everything up. I hope I'm wrong of course, but it's going to be hard following Bryan Kirkwood.

  7. That's so sad!

I thought he had a totally defined new project!

Maybe he can replace Kim Crowther! (Yeah... I know - total fantasy.)

I heard ITV and Granada wanted him for Corrie a year or so ago, but he refused to leave Hollyoaks. I don't know how true that is, but he would be a good addition to Corrie again, especially if he were allowed to run the show.

  8. Where's he going?

    http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/soaps/a132793/...s-producer.html

Earlier this year, Hollyoaks won more British Soap Awards than any other soap.

Kirkwood will remain with Hollyoaks until the end of the year, with his material running into the early part of 2009. Beyond his departure, he will maintain strong ties with Lime Pictures and continue to work with the company on potential new projects.

  9. OMG, NO!!!!!!

Bryan Kirkwood single-handedly revived this show. If it weren't for him, the show wouldn't be half as good as it is today. I'm very sad by this news. :(

I guess we all knew it would come soon, but I thought he'd step down in a year or so.

I wish Lucy Allan the best of luck, but she has a tough act to follow.

  10. I found the clip of when Clare was about to smother OB in the hospital after the explosion that killed Mel and Sophie. I love how she went from all psycho to sweet when Max walked in. LOL!

It starts 3 minutes and 30 seconds into this clip.

  11. I always used to say that you should take the lyrics from one song he produced and sing it over the production track of another one of his songs and it would still sound the same. LOL!

I think Britney's first two albums, the Max Martin dominated ones, are her worst efforts. I think she's one of those acts whose music technically got better once she grew up.

  12. I want to hear "Circus" because Max Martin worked on it and I love Britney's Max Martin songs! I'm glad she's working with him again and I hope she continues to.

Max Martin's productions are always so generic. Though, he's changed from his original Swedish synthpop productions to a more generic pop-rock sound with the stuff he's done with Kelly Clarkson, Avril Lavigne, and P!nk. I fully expect his recent Britney songs to follow in the pop-rock vein, he seems to be done with the synthpop of the late 90's/early 00's.

  13. Yay! Steph went off on Niall and ended things with him!! :)

I loved how she brought up that she has guilt over him being Max's killer.

But where are Steph and Tom going?

After she saw Niall yelling at Tom, and was creeped out by Niall's folder, I think she's putting two and two together about Niall and realizes how sick he is. I think there's a lot more to it though, and we'll find out later.

Next week is going to be a big week, that's all I'll say. This week is a good set up for what's about to explode. :)

  14. Ah you see when I watched I interpreted that as Sam just bumping into her and she never realized it was him. Then she walked off to get the hell out of Hollyoaks.

She knew what he was capable of, and she thought she was going to be exposed anyway, so she was going to leave town before she was exposed or in the case something happened to Mel, Sophie, and OB, she wouldn't be involved.

It was kind of the passing of the torch though, as she then became the main villian on the show once Sam died in the fire as well.

  15. You make it sound like Clare left knowing they were going to die LOL.

She did LOL. She knew what a danger Sam was, and she was the only one who saw him enter the Dog with a petrol and a lighter, yet she did nothing about it. She could've pulled the alarm or called the police, but she went back home to pack.

Later she visited OB in the hospital and she made fun of Mel and Sophie's death and threatened to smother him. LOL! She knew exactly what she was doing.

Sam hated Sophie, and Clare hated Mel, so it worked out well for both of them in the end. LOL!

  16. I assumed you watched the fire at The Dog, where Clare left Mel and Sophie to burn to death. That was in September 2006, I believe.

That was such a great episode. Mel was going to expose Clare for the cheating psycho she was, but never got the chance and Clare left her and twin sister to die. That really crushed OB, as he never trusted Clare and loved Mel and Sophie, and he couldn't get through to Max, because she put a strain on their friendship. Max and OB got supercouple treatement. LOL!

Mel and Sophie's death would enable Clare to drive a whole year of story, and of course was indirectly responsible for the great "Who Pushed Clare" mystery in 2007.

  17. YouTube my friend. carr1984 is all you need to know.

Now, I have a question. Does the U.K have the same sweeps months as the U.S.?

I guess its roughly the same time period. I notice big events get done in the middle of fall, winter, and spring each year in the UK soaps.

  18. Well that sucks. He's such a nuisance.

He started in September 2006, so you're only really watching his first few episodes on the show right now. He gets less annoying as time goes on, but he's still the bitch he's always been. LOL!

  19. Aw, that's sad to hear Amy and Nicole are gone. Why did they keep the most boring Owen around? LOL Everytime I see Hannah all happy knowing what's going to happen to her in the future I get sad LOL Is Nancy still around? Sarah?

No, Amy, Sarah, and Nancy are all still with the show. If you read this thread in detail, you'd know that. :P

    Nicole and Sonny are gone.

Russ Owen gets more interesting in 2007, especially with his entanglement with Mercedes and how she treats him like crap. LOL!

  20. Okay so I,m watching September 2006 right now

The beginning of Bryan Kirkwood's tenure as producer.

and man I feel so bad for Nicole. That girl cannot catch a break. All those a*holes bullying her and treating terribly. Plus, I really want to know who Amy's baby daddy is! Oh yeah and Sonny Valentine NEEDS to die like yesterday. HATE HIM.

None of these characters are on the show anymore. LOL!

Things start heating up in October and November 2006. And of course there's the Christmas 2006 episode where Clare tries to kill a sick Max when they go to the cabin, and OB comes to his rescue and punches Clare. LOL!

The JP and Craig storyline also begins in late 2006, that along with Clare's reign of terror would drive major storylines in 2007, of course.
