Yes, I remember reading that story about Barrow wanting to be paid for appearing in the opening. Still, if I were in charge, I would have simply dropped him and just used everyone else. Or perhaps made a few different openings, only one with Johnny Ryan which could be shown when Barrow was actually going to appear on that day.

That would have been a good idea.

They must have really felt no one would ever find out about  Bernard Barrow's additional money.

The opening also felt somewhat out of date with what the show had become - that and it was slowly cut to pieces from the larger opening that they had to stop using most of I think after Kate Mulgrew left (the first changes were when Faith Catlin left).

    .

Faith Catlin last appeared in May (1976) however they did not change the opening until November (1976). Faith Catlin's picnic opening scenes were seen through all of Nancy Barrett's run and (approx) the first 7 weeks of Catherine Hicks' run. Since neither Nancy or Catherine received “the role of Faith Coleridge is now being played by...” voice-over introduction – and also Faith Catlin still in the opening -- I wonder if some of the viewers expected her to return to the role any day.

It wasn't until the Michael Hawkins' (Frank #1) final episode (the following episode Andrew Robinson** took over) that the show returned to the original opening* with only Johnny, Maeve, and Little John twirling around in the park.

*The opening with the picnic scenes began around episode #20.

**Andrew Robinson received the first VO intro.

I will never understand the logic behind eliminating the pictures of the show's characters from this RH opening logo, and replacing them with a bunch of anonymous strangers. It's like the "bedsheets in the wind" opening from OLTL, with all its pictures of unknown models who had nothing whatsoever to do with...the show.

The story posted at the old Soapnet forum was that Bernard Barrow (Johnny) had it put in one of his contract renewals that he got paid every time the opening with him aired -- so even if he wasn’t in an episode - - he still made some money. This was kept a secret from his fellow cast members-- then Helen Gallagher (Maeve) found out about it and demanded the same deal. That was why they went for the opening without any RH actors – to get out of having to pay them any extra money.

Posters then speculated that by the time the contracts came up for renewal again the show had added a clause in the standard contracts that said appearances in the opening were part of an actors' regular salary and they would not receive any extra payment for it.

Sarah was let go in summer or fall 1980 wasn't she? I think that recast arrived in January 1981 or late 1980. I'm confused about the June thing as I believe Sarah was still there at that point.

Yes, you are right --this newspaper clipping was  from late spring  or early summer of 1980.  Sarah''s last appearance was in early July of 1980  but probably taped in early in mid-June of 1980. Thanks!

Turns out the clipping was from May 1980.

    Probably.

Weren't all of ABC's soap opera's ratings on the rise at that point  and the whole line-up benefited from General Hospital's increased popularity?

Generally, yes. I think 1981 was a well-rated year for RH for that reason.

I thought 1981 was good ratings wise for RH -- that was why this newspaper column that said the show was having ratings trouble surprised me. I don't have the exact date of this but I think it would mean they were having rating problems in the spring of 1981. Of course they were wrong about a new Siobhan coming on right after Sarah left - - so maybe they were wrong about the ratings, too.

Even after all these years Siobhan's wailing in this period still tugs at my heartstrings...I had that in my head for eons, "...because YOU were on MY side!!!" I love that scene. Thank you.

    Sarah was great!

Do you have the episode where Siobhan and Jack argue after the engagement party and Mary realizes something isn't right? I haven't been able to find that one and I really want to see it again.

Carl, here is the episode --

I feel so bad. How could I forget Tom's death?!   I mean, I guess he had barely been on the show for months  - Faith, too.  And she's still hardly ever on. I guess with no Pat and no Faith, the writers don't know what to do with her?

Before Pat and Nancy left town,  I thought they were going to move Faith into a Faith/Pat/Nancy triangle after she became a widow.

unfortunately, spoiled to know Mary Ryan's fate. She discovered the drug smuggling scheme this week and is currently hiding in the warehouse.  It's incredibly difficult to watch. It may not be Kate Mulgrew, but it's still Mary.  Goulet has been on for a year now and I've gotten used to her.  After having Edmund's death earlier this year....really, RH....ANOTHER death.

Also another one was Tom Desmond -- a few months before Mary.

Would it be ghoulish to speculate as to whether the "Terry the Tumor" story was the byproduct of Claire and Paul and the oxygen tank's writing session? She did say they were struggling to come up with a story for Pat and Faith in that situation, after all...

That might explain why they decided to write another story where Faith was in danger for months ---  and once again held captive  -- and also having Tom and Teresa repeat Kenneth Castle's  lines about Faith being “wicked “ and needed to be “punished”

A belated article in honor of Claire Labine...

    That was nice. Thanks!

The part where Claire said she would lay down on the bathroom floor to wake herself up when she was so tired was what they had Pat do when he was so exhausted from being overworked and keeping up with Delia's demands for attention.

No problem. I like finding these because I know you appreciate them - most soap fans don't really seem to enjoy the long history of soap actors and commercials (sadly gone now...). If I ever find a better version of that ad I'll post it.

Yeah, back then it was a nice surprise to see soap actors in commercials.

I remember in a magazine interview Helen Gallagher said she would love to do commercials --but said they would never hire her. OTOH, Malcolm Groome stated he would never do commercials.

Bye, Nance. Dec. 9 will mark Nancy Addison Altman's last day as Jillian Coleridge Ryan on "Ryan's Hope," one of the few actors who has been with the show since it premiered back in 1975. A strong and reliable actress, she garnered two Emmy nominations during her years as Jill. She and her husband, former "20/20" producer Daniel Goldfarb, are moving to California, where Altman will be making rounds of film auditions and Goldfarb will be pursuing a new career as a screenwriter. Meanwhile, back at "RH," there were reports that the writers were going to send Jill off with a flourish by getting her involved in a political scandal or putting the character in a coma just in case Nancy decides to return in the future. Now, they've decided to simply send Jill off to Australia to visit her mother. Soap Bits -  Even though John Sanderford is angry that his "Ryan's Hope" character, Frank Ryan, has been relegated to the back burner, he just signed a new 18-month contract...
