  1. Regulars of the Classic GH thread are currently learning about Phil Brewer's "death" thanks to @depboy - Phil was presumed dead in a plane crash in South America in November 1969, but in same episode where Lee announced his death, the audience saw him comatose in a hospital under an assumed name. He woke up shortly afterwards and in March 1970 he snuck back in to the States using the alias Harold Williamson. It shouldn't be long before the summaries start to cover Phil's meeting with Diana Maynard, later better known as Diana Taylor.

Thanks, this is helpful. I always get Tex Elman, the Hollands, etc. mixed up. I know there was some sort of weird psycho identical twin romance story with Jeff before Monty arrived, and of course the disaster (tornado?) that killed Diana's biological child. IIRC that was the first attempt at a revamp?

It was a hurricane but there had already been a couple of attempts to revamp the show before then (the cull of '75, the arrival of the Webbers etc).

But yes the hurricane was significant - in addition to killing off Diana's daughter Martha (which eventually led Diana to adopt Steven-Lars), it also introduced Lisa/Lana (the split personality pretending to be twins storyline you were thinking of) and David Hamilton as victims of the hurricane, and kicked off Scotty and Laura's romance.

And - while not directly related to the hurricane - shortly afterward Monica started working with Alan on the new cardiac wing...

Yes ! Didn't know that. And I was expecting Diana. She had always been wrongly credited as joining in 1969 but this was 1970. How terrific to know that !

She's definitely coming soon. Just depends on how long it takes Phil to get out of South America I guess.

That reference to Scotty and Lee meeting makes it seem like it was the first time but I think earlier in the summaries they  did meet-maybe 1966?

Yeah I did a double-take at that myself, but after reading the summary again I think it is supposed to refer to Lee and Scotty meeting up for the first time since Lee and Meg's separation, hence Scotty asking Lee where he has been.

How many times was Jessie on trial?  She really went through it, the long suffering character that you desperately wanted to have a happy ending.

Jake was my favorite pairing for Bobbie.  Tony was so sanctimonious.

I think this was the only time Jessie was actually on trial.

When Jessie was accused of murdering Phil in 1975, they only made it as far as a preliminary hearing (with the result being that Jessie should stand trial) before Diana (who erroneously believed Peter had done it) stepped in and confessed to the crime herself in order to spare Jessie from having to stand trial.

they don’t seem to have a lot of sets

They are getting a helluva lot of use out of the Ten-Foward Los Angeles set, not that I'm complaining. It's a nice set and a logical move to have re-use it by having Picard set it up as a holodeck program on the Titan.

Great episode this week. I will tag it since there is a big surprise and it's early.

    Spoiler

I kinda guessed it was going to be her when I saw the brief episode synopsis about the prodigal crewman.

It was quite a well-written feat to explain how she ended up back in starfleet (I think they may have borrowed some elements of the non-canon Star Trek online for that), have Picard and her resolve their issues and give a heroic death to her all in one episode. I also liked that she turned out to be Worf's handler so finally the two main threads have come together.

All in all, it was a very satisfying end to the character, as opposed to the deaths of Hugh Borg and Icheb back in season 1.

Anne Logan has nightmares and is afraid of Heather. I really have to say that I don’t get the love for Anne Logan. She is the most irritating character ever.

Don't worry, you're not alone. I think most of us here hate her lol!

i still don’t believe that it was just Luke and Laura that draw in the ratings. Robin Mattson is a phenomenal actress and had Some outstanding acting done during this month. While Luke/Laura their story was stalling during the last couple of months the Heather story was moving pretty fast.

Heather at this point was a great anti-heroine and her character was a good juxtaposition to Laura. Even though there characters don't cross paths very much they did have a brief interaction at Joe's party which I thought was interesting.

At the time there was a lot of hype about Rick Moses/Hutch. I think Gloria Monty really believed she had the magic touch and lightning would strike again a la Luke. But they struggled to find a way to reform him and integrate him into the story.

With writers strikes and backstage drama., Hutch got lost in the turmoil.

Yeah it was clear that they wanted to do something with him long-term, otherwise why else have all those endless prison scenes but as you say it didn't work out.

Are they celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Nurse's Ball or the 60th anniversary of the hospital?  Because we've flashed back to the first episode a number of times now and it didn't seem like Dr. Hardy's first day on the job.

It is supposed to be the 60th anniversary of the hospital.

You are absolutely right that it definitely wasn't Steve Hardy's first day back on the job in the first episode back in 1963 but they basically ret-conned that for the 30th anniversary to say that it was and then carried that on for the 50th.

Then in 2019 when they wrote in Gail Baldwin's death her will stated that the treasure hunt she had set up was to take place on the 56th anniversary of the hospital, thus making April 1 the anniversary of the hospital itself and they've carried that on this year for the 60th.

I find Shortland Street almost literally unwatchable since back from break, to the point where I have to pause multiple times to get through episodes. The show is 100% backbreakingly grim (aside from a weird quasi-comedy character who goes around harassing people about whether they are related to her - ship her off in a box and never mention her again) and is full of issue stories that I just don't know if I believe they are capable of handling. Even when the Brightshine story is finally over, there are so many clapped out caricatures like Dawn and miserable figures like Esther that I never need to see in storyline again.

While I was excited for the first week or so, I quickly grew a bit bored and haven't watched for over a month now.

Yeah, they're definitely setting up a backdoor Titan or TNG Legacy show. Patrick Stewart and Jonathan Frakes were even floating the idea of a show this week in interviews.

I think this is partly why they have decided to end Discovery after five seasons. With both Picard and Discovery ending it frees up space for two more shows.

I really miss the way Y&R would ease you into an episode. They'd give you 10-20 seconds before anyone even said anything, I can't quite put it into words, it just felt comforting. All soaps used to do that really, setting the scene, but Y&R did it the best.

I think I get what you mean. There'd be an establishing shot with a bouquet of flowers or something and sometimes the camera would then slowly pan across the room...

This to me was the strongest ep so far. The scenes with Picard and Crusher were excellent, and beautiful work from both actors. The script did not skimp or play it too coy or witty. That said, I am curious about the exact timeline of their on-off relationship - Picard says they got together and broke up 'five times' before the final break. I would have to assume this on-off affair began during the run of the TNG movies, not just after Nemesis. I did mostly buy Beverly's reasons for staying away. The Romulan refugee mess was very dangerous for Picard.

Yeah, my thought is that they likely first got together soon after All Good Things and just so happened to be broken up whenever a movie came along.

I also liked that they tied in Picard's work with the Romulan refugees and Beverly's personal losses in a way that makes her absence make sense.

Does anyone recall the name of the facility that Heather went to originally during the Anne/Jeff story?

Also, I've always assumed that references to Miscavige were dropped when Michelle Stafford was hired.

Well I know for sure from viewing the 1981 episodes that the facility Heather was in was called Forest Hills, but I've seen references that say Jeff committed Heather to Pine Circle after the LSD incident. I don't know whether this was meant to be the same sanitarium (perhaps a retcon or a continuity error) or whether Heather was transferred at some point.
