  1. Possibly. However, One Life to Live would have been canceled sooner had ABC gotten the chance to acquire Days of our Lives on its lineup. That said, I don't doubt ABC would have also forced Corday to sell the show to them at some point had they gotten the show. Besides NBC still giving a damn, I'm sure that's one of the reasons DAYS never went to ABC.
  2. Patrick Muldoon (“Days of our Lives,” “Melrose Place”) and Jennifer Taylor (“Two and a Half Men”) are joining the cast of “The Bay,” playing the parents of Caleb McKinnon (Mike Manning) for the show’s upcoming ninth season. According to Deadline, the storyline finds Caleb’s conservative parents reconnecting with their son after previously abandoning him after he married Daniel Garrett (Eric Nelsen). In addition to Muldoon and Taylor, other cast announcements for Season 9 include Dee Wallace (“E.T.,” “General Hospital”), Olivia d’Abo (“The Wonder Years”), Tristan Mack Wilds (“90210”), Rhonda Rooss (“Another World”) and Jordi Vilasuso (“The Young and the Restless,” “Guiding Light”). According to TV Insider, Wallace will play Charlotte Grace, while d’Abo has been cast as Felicia “Fifi” Martin, daughter of Commissioner Lex Martin (Tristan Rogers) and Dr. Liza Garrett (Ilene Kristen). Meanwhile, Wilds will take over the role of Will Campbell, previously portrayed by actor Derrell Whitt during the show’s third season. As for Ross, Deadline reports she’ll play Colleen Givens, the biological mother of Vivian (Karrueche Tran), who is sought out by son-in-law Pete Garrett (Kristos Andrews) after Vivian becomes ill. Colleen is described as a jazz singer who put Vivian up for adoption at birth. This year, “The Bay” is nominated for five Daytime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Daytime Drama Series. Since its debut, the show has won 23 Daytime Emmy Awards (out of 56 previous nominations) over its previous seven seasons. Written and directed by Gregori J. Martin, “The Bay” is produced by LANY Entertainment in association with She Mogul Media. The series airs weekdays on Popstar! TV and streaming On Demand on Tubi, Peacock and Prime Video, among other platforms. 3. This year marks 35 years since the debut of Soap Opera Weekly, the defunct full-size print magazine that delved deep into what’s happening or would be happening on all of the daytime dramas. The publication ran for 23 years. American Media To celebrate the magazine and all it accomplished, Alan Locher‘s “The Locher Room” will host a special live broadcast on Wednesday, May 22. The broadcast will feature key members from Soap Opera Weekly’s heydey, including founding editor-in-chief Mimi Torchin, who led the outlet for 11 years, managing editor Kate Walsh, news editor Gabby Winkel and editors Jonathan Reiner, Mark McGarry and Travis Kinsey. A sister publication to the recently defunct Soap Opera Digest print magazine, Soap Opera Weekly‘s first issue hit newsstands in November 1989. The final issue was released in April 2012, one year after the cancellations of “All My Children” and “One Life to Live.” At the time, only four daytime soaps remained on the air, and the magazine was competing for readers against both Digest and Soaps In Depth (ABC and CBS editions). In teasing the upcoming episode of “The Locher Room,” we’re told the former Soap Opera Weekly editorial team will share some of their favorite memories and behind-the-scenes stories of their time piecing the magazine together week after week. “Soap Opera Weekly: A Look Back with the Magazine’s Staff” is scheduled for Wednesday, May 22 at 7:00 p.m. ET/4:00 p.m. PT, live on “The Locher Room” YouTube channel with host Alan Locher. You can watch the broadcast by clicking here or clicking on the play button below (when available). 4. Next week, “Days of our Lives” will formally introduce a new character named Felicity, portrayed by Kennedy Garcia, an actress, model and speaker with Down syndrome. In a recent episode, the Felicity character was first mentioned during a conversation between Johnny and Chanel (Carson Boatman and Raven Bowens). The pair were discussing Chanel’s exposure to radiation while pregnant and what impact, if any, that might have on their child. “It’s a great day to welcome @kennedyjean04 to Salem, plus it’s her birthday today! Wish her Happy Birthday and tune in to meet ‘Felicity’ on-air next week!” read the caption of a post published on the “Days of our Lives” Instagram page on Thursday. Earlier today, Garcia shared snaps from her experience thus far, including posing in the parking lot outside of Studio 2 at the show’s Burbank studio, a behind-the-scenes look of her getting dolled up in the hair/makeup chair and hanging out with co-stars Boatman and Bowens. “I have loved getting to know everyone in Salem and most of all learning who Felicity is!” said Garcia in the caption of a post on Instagram where she shared snaps of her experience during the first days after her initial casting – the show tapes six-eight months ahead of airdate. “I can’t wait to share her with you all next week!” she continued. “We’re excited to have you!” wrote the official “Days of our Lives” handle in response to Garcia’s post. “So happy to have you!!!” commented Bowens, who teased a TikTok collaboration between the two that could not be posted as Garcia’s casting was not known at the time of recording. “I was so nervous on my first day,” Garcia recalled in an interview with TV Insider. “I was worried I would mess up or forget my lines, but everyone was so nice! They even let me choose my own wardrobe! I’m not nervous anymore!” In addition to praising Bowens for being there to help her out and show her around, Garcia also thanks “The Young and the Restless” star Courtney Hope for encouraging her. “[She] prepared me for my audition and really cheered me on,” revealed Garcia to TV Insider. Talking about her character and the power of representation, Garcia notes, “Even though [Felicity] has Down syndrome, she is cherished by her family and friends, she is capable of great things, and she’s a hard worker. I’m pretty sure she bakes better than I do. She is also a typical teenager who has real feelings and fears that people will see as her story goes on.” “I hope no one underestimates Felicity as a character, or actors with disabilities like me,” Garcia continued. “Representation is so important and I’m so thankful for this opportunity to become Felicity and let you all get to know her, and me!” Check out photos from Garcia’s first couple of days on the set of “Days of our Lives” below. 5. Making his first appearance on the Wednesday, May 15 episode of ABC’s “General Hospital,” actor Giovanni Mazza is officially on contract at the daytime drama series where he portrays Giovanni Palmieri, Brook Lynn Quartermaine’s (Amanda Setton) cousin who played the violin during her nuptials to Harrison Chase (Josh Swickard). According to Friday’s closing credits, Mazza is the latest actor to join the show’s contract cast list, which includes 33 actors. The show also retains several additional actors who appear in a recurring capacity. Two other actors who joined the show this year and whose names appear before Mazza on the contract list are Adam J. Harrington (John Cates) and Steve Burton (Jason Morgan). While Harrington is a newcomer to daytime, his character originally appeared on the show as recently as 1995, when portrayed by Antonio Sabato Jr. Meanwhile, Burton returned to the series after he was let go in November 2021 due to Disney’s (owner of ABC) since-vacated vaccine mandate. News of Burton's return to the show was first revealed in early January during a promo aired at the conclusion of the primetime special “General Hospital: 60 Years of Stars and Storytelling,” celebrating the show’s milestone anniversary. Burton first aired on the Monday, March 4 episode. With “General Hospital” listing its contract actors primarily in the order in which they signed their contracts, the most veteran members on the list are Maurice Benard (Sonny Corinthos), Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis Davis), Rebecca Herbst (Elizabeth Webber), Kelly Monaco (Sam McCall) and Laura Wright (Carly Spencer). Mazza is an experienced violinist and actor who has appeared in episodes of “Chicago Fire” and “Bella and the Bulldogs,” among other credits. In 2021, Mazza appeared on the short-lived FOX competition series “Game of Talents,” hosted by Wayne Brady (“Let’s Make a Deal”), which had contestants guessing the hidden talents of performers based exclusively on first impressions and with minimal clues provided. Watch a clip of Mazza revealing his hidden talent on “Game of Talents” below. Note: The post Giovanni Mazza on Contract at ‘General Hospital’ appeared first on the Soap Opera Network website. 6. Correct. Based on that example, one would only use the word "allegedly" if specifically stating someone's name, whether it be the person potentially losing their job or who/where they got the information from, and it was either incorrect or defaming. A better example with proper use would be: "Allegedly, (name of person) is getting fired because (name of person) doesn't like them." Another could be, "(Name of person) is allegedly not a good person and is the worst when it comes to their reception of new scripts."
  7. The word "allegedly" is used as a cover-your-ass statement for legal purposes. No other reason. As for your comment on how the word was used, I don't have an opinion. I'm only commenting to explain the use of the word "allegedly." The network wanted DAYS on their lineup. They offered to buy the rights to broadcast the show back in the late 90s/early 2000s when the show's contract was up for renegotiation with NBC. Was that not clear with what I said?
  8. Not that we have any recent evidence ABC gives a crap about rebooting AMC/OLTL, but canceling GH wouldn't lead to their sudden resurfacing. No matter what anyone says, especially right now, there are only two things that will get Disney (more than ABC) to rethink a potential reboot of either of those two soaps or even a new soap: A successful launch of The Gates by CBS and/or sudden resurgence in viewership at GH. The only reason ABC fought so hard for DAYS back when the show got four-year deals at NBC was because that show was up for renewal while it was banging down the door at Y&R for dominance in the key sales demos. The growth of a veteran series vs. what it did previously or the successful launch of a new series means only one thing to network executives: copycats. Networks look at what they have in the pipeline or seek out similar concepts when they see another network (or streamer) doing something they think they can duplicate. This is why CBS decided to do FBI Tuesdays after NBC had Chicago Wednesdays (not to mention Dick Wolf produces all of them), and it is why all the networks tried to create their own Lost (sci-fi show where unexplained events happen to characters, including disappearing from "reality"). Heck, where do y'all think "The Real Housewives" franchise came from? It was created as a reality-based version of "Desperate Housewives," but with rich(er) people.
  9. Maurice's lines today, specifically the "cliffhanger" where Kristina overheard him and dropped something on the ground, were ridiculous. Intentional or not, it was as if I was watching a newcomer perform the scene. It's so unlike him. IMO, he didn't like saying those words.
  10. This is slightly off-topic, but with primetime dramas seeing cuts in episode guarantees for contract players/series regulars, I'm surprised we're not getting that more and more in daytime, especially since GH, in particular, is just a never-ending revolving door of contract handouts. More people are on recurring, sure, but it's wild on the contract side.
  11. Memes are fine. I was talking about something specific when I made that comment.
  12. I didn't write this in my article, but since Digest is alluding to it, I'll say it outright here: Don't be surprised if an entirely new writing team is at the helm. Right now, it is 50/50. As I said earlier, "there's more to the story."
  13. https://www.soapoperanetwork.com/2024/05/patrick-mulcahey-out-co-head-writer-general-hospital TLDR: Elizabeth Korte, who became co-head writer alongside Mulcahey, will assume sole head writer duties following Mulcahey’s exit. Although reports indicate Van Etten is replacing Mulcahey as the show’s new co-head writer, sources tell us that is presently not the case, and Korte will retain sole head writer duties.
  14. Nearly five months since being named co-head writer at “General Hospital,” Daytime Emmy Award winner Patrick Mulcahey is exiting the daytime drama series, Soap Opera Network has learned. Elizabeth Korte, who became co-head writer alongside Mulcahey, will assume sole head writer duties following Mulcahey’s exit. News of Mulcahey’s departure from “General Hospital” began circulating on social media Thursday afternoon following a report by The Buzz blog. Having written for several soaps, including a previous tenure as a scriptwriter, breakdown writer and later associate head writer at “General Hospital” in the mid-to-late 90s, Mulcahey is probably best known for his time as a scriptwriter at “The Bold and the Beautiful.” He joined the show’s writing team in 2005 and would later become a story consultant at the series until he left the series in 2019. In related news, Chris Van Etten is back as a breakdown writer at “General Hospital.” Fans of the show will recall that Van Etten and his then-co-head writer, Dan O’Connor, were replaced by Mulcahey and Korte as the show’s new co-head writers. Although reports indicate Van Etten is replacing Mulcahey as the show’s new co-head writer, sources tell us that is presently not the case, and Korte will be the show’s sole head writer. Additional changes within the show’s writing staff are expected. In recent weeks, “General Hospital” has tied its series low among Women 18-49, one of the two key sales demographics that set advertising rates for daytime television programming. The series has also hit a new season low among Total Viewers during the week of May 6-10, 2024, the most recent week in which ratings data is available for the series. Overall, the show has averaged under two million viewers for the fourth consecutive week and the 10th time this season. 15. Well... ABC needs to return its "more to the story" marketing...
  16. On Friday, May 10, the cast and crew of “General Hospital” gathered at Prospect Studios in Hollywood, where the award-winning soap opera is taped, as ABC Entertainment executives honored the series by dedicating its studio, Stage 4, as “The General Hospital Stage.” “This event was supposed to take place in April, 2023 but due to a multitude of reasons was postponed. Well, we finally celebrated the legacy and history of ‘General Hospital’ with a stage dedication placard that will live on forever!” noted Nathan Varni, the ABC Current Series Executive in charge of production for the daytime drama series, in a post on Facebook. Varni added, “Thanks to everyone involved with the show for all your hard work, dedication and passion for continuing to keep this show alive and running! Congrats to all involved!” We deeply admire and appreciate everyone who works around the clock to bring this series to life 255 days a year!” A plaque reading, “‘The General Hospital Stage’: In honor of the iconic television drama’s historic 60th anniversary,” will now grace the entrance to the stage. “General Hospital” made its series debut on April 1, 1963 on ABC. Alberto Rodrigue/Disney As of Thursday, May 16, 2024, “General Hospital” has aired 15,469 episodes. The series is the longest-running television scripted drama currently in production in the United States. It holds the record for the most Outstanding Daytime Drama award wins in Daytime Emmy history, taking home the prestigious award a record 16 times, including its most recent win in 2023. Cast and Crew of “General Hospital” Alberto Rodriguez/Disney In addition to executive producer Frank Valentini, along with other producers and crew members, the dedication ceremony was also attended by numerous current cast members, including (from top-to-bottom, left-to-right), Michael Easton (Finn), Jeff Kober (Cyrus), Chad Duell (Michael), Josh Swickard (Chase), Kristina Wagner (Felicia), John J. York (Mac), Carolyn Hennesy (Diane), Maura West (Ava), Amanda Setton (Brook Lynn), Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis), Kirsten Storms (Maxie), Laura Wright (Carly), Robert Gossett (Marshall), Evan Hofer (Dex), Eden McCoy (Josslyn), Brook Kerr (Portia), Donnell Turner (Curtis), Vernee Watson (Stella), Kelly Monaco (Sam), Rebecca Herbst (Elizabeth), Josh Kelly (Cody), Bradford Anderson (Spinelli), Jophielle Love, Jane Elliott (Tracy), Jacqueline Grace Lopez (Blaze), Giovanni Mazza (Gio) and Hudson West (Jake), along with other unnamed individuals. “General Hospital” airs weekdays on ABC. The series can be streamed Live and On Demand on Hulu. Note: The post ABC Holds Stage Dedication Ceremony Honoring ‘General Hospital’ appeared first on the Soap Opera Network website. Read More
  17. Can we not resort to using memes or even commenting whatsoever if we can't respond to others in a respectful manner with our words? I'm not ready to deal with B.S. right now.
  18. In my article, I didn't write that I received a "no comment." What I wrote was that I had not received a response when pressed for comment prior to posting. There's a difference.
  19. I posted the breakdown writer news, to be clear. I have not updated it as yet until I have two sources requiring an update.
  20. While it was announced in January that “General Hospital” had replaced co-head writers Chris Van Etten and Dan O’Connor with new co-head writers Elizabeth Korte and Patrick Mulcahey, it looks like Van Etten at least is officially back in the writer’s room at the ABC daytime drama series. During the Tuesday, May 14 episode, Van Etten’s name appeared in the credits for the first time since mid-March, this time as a breakdown writer. Savvy fans had an inkling that Van Etten returned to the series when actress Alley Mills let the news slip during a video interview with journalist Michael Fairman in late April. At the time, Mills was discussing her second consecutive Daytime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Performance in a Daytime Drama Series for her portrayal of Heather Webber on the series. She won her first-ever Emmy in December 2023 for her work. ABC “… the head writer at the time, Chris Van Etten, who’s still with us, thank god because I just adore him. I love the new head writer who I’ve known forever from ‘The Bold and the Beautiful.’ He’s amazing. We have a double whammy there,” commented Mills while speaking on material she’d been given by the show’s writers since joining the cast in 2022. Mills previously portrayed Pamela Douglas on “The Bold and the Beautiful,” where Mills encountered Patrick Mulcahey, who worked as a scriptwriter for that soap starting in 2005 before later transitioning to the position of story consultant. In 2019, Mulcahey took a break from soap opera writing until landing back at “General Hospital” this year. A rep for “General Hospital” did not immediately respond to a request for comment at press time. Before the switch in head writers, Van Etten had been the co-head writer of “General Hospital” since October 2017, replacing Jean Passanante, who decided to retire after 25 years in the industry. Van Etten worked alongside the show’s then-co-head writer, Shelly Altman, through much of 2019 until she retired, leaving the door open for Dan O’Connor to replace her. Van Etten and O’Connor became the show’s co-head writers in November 2019 and remained in that capacity until they were replaced by Korte and Mulcahey. Before head writing at “General Hospital,” Van Etten had been a breakdown writer at the show since May 2012, joining the writing staff under the show’s then-head writer, Ron Carlivati (now at “Days of our Lives”). Prior to that, Van Etten had been working at “One Life to Live,” where he started out as the assistant to the show’s executive producer, first for Gary Tomlin and then Frank Valentini (now executive producer at “General Hospital”) from 2001-2003. Van Etten went on to become a writer’s associate at “One Life to Live” before being promoted to continuity supervisor, followed by associate head writer in August 2005. By November 2006, Van Etten had become a breakdown writer at the since-canceled New York-based daytime drama series. In 2008, Van Etten won his first Daytime Emmy Award as a member of the “One Life to Live” writing team. 21. In an Instagram Story published Wednesday, former “Days of our Lives” star Camila Banus seemingly called out her former colleagues over allegedly retaining friendships “with snakes.” The song “Life is a Highway” by the Rascal Flatts accompanied the post. Without providing specifics about who or what exactly she’s referring to, although much can be inferred based on the timing of her exit from the series last year and the revelation of behind-the-scenes turmoil that led to a change in producers, Banus began her message by saying, “I will never understand all the people at my previous place of employment that are friends with snakes.” “Just know this. I remember all, I will continue to remember how those snakes treated me and how others allowed and perpetuated their behavior,” she pointed out, adding, “I remember times where everyone just stayed quiet, knowing what was happening was wrong. Men and women.” At press time, there was no indication of what prompted Banus to post her message, particularly as she announced finished taping at the Burbank-based studio for the series more than a year ago, with her final episode where she appeared as Gabi Hernandez airing in November last year. She portrayed the character off and on for 13 years, joining in October 2010. Banus closed out her Instagram story using two emojis: a teapot and a steaming hot cup of tea, which can be surmised as her “spilling the tea.” Note: The post Camila Banus Calls Out Former ‘Days of our Lives’ Colleagues Over Being “Friends with Snakes” appeared first on the Soap Opera Network website. 22. The “Jeopardy!” brand is expanding again. Prime Video announced earlier this week that it has ordered “Pop Culture Jeopardy!” from Sony Pictures Television. This marks the first time a “Jeopardy!” series will be created exclusively for a major streaming service. ABC, which has been the primary home for the brand, airs “Celebrity Jeopardy!” and “Jeopardy! Masters” in primetime, while its affiliates make up the bulk of where viewers tune in for the main syndicated series. Putting a twist on the classic quiz show’s “answer-and-question” format that combines the academic rigor of “Jeopardy!” with the excitement and unpredictability of pop culture, “Pop Culture Jeopardy!” will see contestants playing in teams of three, using their expertise in categories from Alternative Rock to The Avengers; Broadway to MMA; Gen Z to Zendaya as they compete in a tournament-style event for the grand prize and ultimate bragging rights. While there is no announced host or release date yet, the series will premiere exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide. Access to the streamer requires an Amazon Prime membership. “‘Pop Culture Jeopardy!’ is its own cultural moment, marking the first time the iconic franchise will premiere exclusively on a streaming service,” said Lauren Anderson, head of AVOD originals unscripted and targeted programming, Amazon MGM Studios. “With a team-based approach and pop-culture focus, our global Prime Video customers will exclusively experience this innovative spin on ‘Jeopardy!’ while testing their knowledge on topics that both define and transcend generations.” “Pop Culture Jeopardy!” is produced by Sony Pictures Television for Prime Video. Seven-time Emmy Award winner Michael Davies will serve as executive producer, the same role he holds in all other current “Jeopardy!” incarnations. “We couldn’t be more thrilled to collaborate with our partners at Amazon to make Prime Video the home for our new ‘Jeopardy!’ spinoff series,” said Suzanne Prete, President, Game Shows, Sony Pictures Television. “With Michael Davies at the helm, ‘Pop Culture Jeopardy!’ is going to be a nail biter for game show enthusiasts who can expect to see teams competing at the highest level of ‘Jeopardy!’ combined with a fresh twist of pop culture Olympics for the mind…it’s going to be a must-watch for long-time viewers and new fans alike.” For information on how to become a “Pop Culture Jeopardy!” contestant, visit the show’s official website. 23. Steve Burton (“General Hospital,” “Days of our Lives”) is officially dating Michelle Lundstrom, Daily Drama reported on Wednesday. Although the outlet didn’t share any additional information about the couple, specifically how long they’ve been together, nor where or how they met, it did publish two undated photos of the pair out and about in New York City (see here). In one photo, Burton and Lundstrom are seen smiling while walking around with their hands intertwined. In another, the couple poses atop the Empire State Building’s Observation Deck, which provides an impressive view of the New York skyline. Burton and Lundstrom have not gone “social media official,” whereby publicly acknowledging their relationship with photos and declarations. Still, Daily Drama, which houses Burton’s podcast that he co-hosts with Bradford Anderson (“General Hospital”), indicated Burton confirmed the relationship with them directly. The relationship news comes nearly six months after Burton finalized his divorce from ex-wife Sheree Gustin, whom he had been married for nearly 25 years and with whom he shares three children (Makena, Jack and Brooklyn). Their separation was first revealed in May 2022, with Burton admitting Gustin’s then-announced pregnancy was not connected to him, stating, “The child is not mine. We are still co-parenting our three beautiful kids.” Since then, Gustin has given birth to two additional children, daughters Izabella, unveiled to the public in February 2023, and Addy Jay, born earlier this year. "Some things I’ve realized with having my 4th baby in my 40s…I know how fast it goes by. I don’t sweat the small stuff, and I do my best to be present with all my children and live in the moment," said Gustin in an Instagram post shortly revealing the first photos of Izabela to the world. As for Lundstrom, she is probably best known as a contestant during the second season of Netflix’s “Barbecue Showdown” (formerly “The American Barbecue Showdown”). The food competition series follows the best backyard smokers and competitive barbecuers competing for the title of American Barbecue Champion. Season 2 concluded in May 2023. While she didn’t win the competition, having been eliminated during the season’s sixth episode (out of eight), Lundstrom made a memorable impression on the judges and viewers at home. 25. Thank you for correcting me. I don't know why I used the word in my sentence when talking about Hulu having more viewership than Disney+. In that vein, Nielsen recently introduced a new tracking model that indicates the overall reach of all the current popular streamers, and in it, Hulu has 3.1% of the market to Disney+, which has 1.8% in terms of Total Day viewership among Persons 2+. The Hulu number excludes subscribers to the Hulu+Live TV plan.
