Actually, @Soapsuds, I think Kavovit was fired pre-MADD.  And in both cases, I don't think it was P&G who fired them so much as it was CBSD, and Lucy Johnson, in particular, putting pressure on whoever was in charge to fire them.

according to online sources, kavovit left ‘world turns in october 1991. the role wasn’t recast until model john howard’s short run in 1996. scott holroyd took over in 2001 until replaced by roger howarth in 2003.

  2. rarely mentioned, but crucial; from wikipedia:

“Overall, the first half of the 1980s saw a revival in Guiding Light's popularity, with a top-five placing achieved in most years and even a brief dethroning of then-powerhouse General Hospital from the #1 ratings spot for three consecutive weeks. However, as the decade progressed, the ratings slipped a bit, although it was still performing solidly. In 1995, beginning with CBS flagship station WCBS-TV in New York, Guiding Light began airing at 10 a.m. Eastern time in several markets. Its once-solid performance began to crumble by the mid-1990s, when its ratings sunk as low as ninth place out of ten.[25] However, during the controversial clone storyline in 1998, the ratings experienced a brief resurgence, moving up to fifth for many weeks that summer. Nielsen reported Guiding Light had 5 million viewers in 1999.

Up until its CBS finale in 2009, stations in a number of markets aired Guiding Light in the morning either at 9 or 10 a.m. local time: Miami, Chicago, Baltimore, Boston, Detroit, New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Dallas-Fort Worth, Orlando, Atlanta, Columbia, SC, Fort Wayne, IN, South Bend, IN, Portland, OR, Quad Cities, Buffalo, Reno, Portland, ME, Milwaukee, Albany, NY, and Scranton-Wilkes Barre, PA. Guiding Light aired at 12 noon local time in Honolulu, Hawaii. In Savannah, GA, it aired at 4:00 pm local time.”

have described his style as cerebral and a bit chilly before on this board. It’s always been my impression, especially with Y&R in the 80’s and 90’s before he retired. The characters had emotions but something about the way the show was put together sometimes gave it a detached air

As titan1978 alludes to above, the day-to-day writing (for Y&R) was stylized and detached.   If you watch Douglas Marland's (best) material or Anges Nixon's (best) material, it's what I would call "kitchen sink" stuff, where everything looks completely "normal" and people talk in a normal manner, with lots of interruptions and chit-chat.  Bill Bell didn't bother with that much.

thank you both for these astute observations.

for years, i’ve struggled to articulate why i prefered the p&g soaps, i had always described as a styalistic preference, but never realized it was the actual day-to-day writing.

and, as donna noted, while cbs pretty much left bill bell to his own devices, the network felt that the p&g soaps needed the network’s “help.” have that on the record from lucy johnson!

of course, that help led both gl and ‘world turns straight down the [!@#$%^&*]-shute.

Can someone help fill in the details?  I recall an interview later where that cast of ATWT mentioned not knowing that Kennedy had been shot, because they kept going even though the episode was interrupted.  So, they didn't hear the news until they were done recording the episode.

here’s a freebie link to that ny times article:

I do think though that had Brian Bloom remained on the show (although one cannot blame Bloom for doing what other popular soap actors did at the same time-exercise their rights to pursue other opportunities), there probably would have been many more romantic turns with Lily and Dusty, for the simple fact that Lily never could make up her mind where a romantic relationship between her and Dusty or her and Holden were concerned.

agreed! that would have been something to see,

I read it this morning in the NYT this morning.

Did you check the AMPTP’s website? It may be on their website as a press release.

It was a very trite abrupt statement anyway, not sure it’s worth the effort to search for it.

oh — i did see that. when you said ‘read between the lines,’ i thought there was some actual text to parse that i had missed:)

ABC Daytime clearly benefitted from the efforts of a savvy network marketing team.  To this day, I can still so clearly hear the "Loooove i

the great advantage abc daytime had over cbs was that abc owned their shows, so they were able to create a brand that was immediately recognizable.

cbs had to deal with sony, bell-phillips, and, of course, p&g all had to agree, and i can’t say i was surprised when a cbs publicist told me that  p&g was an absolute nightmare to deal with when it came to marketing.

and that the bell shows and p&g shows were so stylistically different prevented cbs creating a brand for their shows.
