I know there has been a poster who addressed that situation before - those weird instances where time stood still in one story while others progressed.

That was a little quirk of Bill's writing in those years.

I wonder if it was one of those things that came up every so often in mapping out episodes and he'd say to Kay-'Darn it, let's just do it and the audience won't even notice and if they do so what'

Sometimes he seemed to take a rather "fluid" approach to time and space.  He'd have Lorie and Lance eating lunch, and a few scenes later it would be dark and they'd still be lingering over their food, then dancing the night away and entertaining the crowd with an impromptu midnight concert, indicating their lunch had turned into dinner without them ever taking a break from the table.  And I never figured out where the hell Jonas and "Pris" were supposed to be.  In some scenes, they appeared to be on the outskirts of Genoa City, receiving the Chronicle with pleas about Leslie's whereabouts ("Have you seen this woman??"), and in other scenes they seemed to be a million miles away somewhere, and Lucas would have to board the Prentiss jet to visit Jonas's club.

-May 28-June 1, 1979 (I want to see which dates Nikki and Jill/Kay are featured because this is the week Nikki killed her father and Jill taunted Kay in the sanitarium).

I believe you'll discover Nikki's killing of Nick Reed is handled in an especially disjointed fashion.   My recollection is that she killed him on some random day -- a Thursday, I think -- and the episode concluded with Nikki standing horrified that he was dead.  The following day's episode didn't address the storyline AT ALL.  There may have been one more "reprieve day" as well, such as a Friday and Monday.  Then the next Tuesday or whatever picked right back up with the aftermath of Nick's death.  I remember being awfully confused as a kid as to whether I'd missed a scene or an episode, I called one of my friends, asked him "Have you seen Nikki or Casey since the daddy got hit with the lamp?", and he said, "Nope!  I don't believe they've been on a single time since then."  It was strange.  (But it was the C-level storyline, and Bell was only addressing it when he didn't have something important going on with Lorie/Lance/Lucas/Leslie).

Thanks to the poster who added the script from "Young and Restless Years", along with the awkward line of dialogue, "How awful being stuck in Genoa City during our young and restless years."  I'm sure the girl playing Sally McGuire was relieved the line was changed before taping, lol.

  3. I never really thought Drucilla was intended to be Amy's sister, but I *did* believe that Amy Lewis was intended to be the young upwardly mobile character in a triangle with Nathan and the street-wise Dru.  When Stephanie E. Williams opted to sign a contract with "General Hospital", it seemed that Olivia was created fairly quickly as the Dru rival.  Which worked out fine, of course.

  4. In 1988 (?), Y&R hired Brenda Epperson to play Ashley Abbott immediately following the departure of Eileen Davidson.  At almost the same time, Jabot's books were being audited by George Rawlins's bossy, assertive, sarcastic niece Brittany Norman, played by Melissa Morgan.  Although Brenda Epperson LOOKED like Ashley, Melissa Morgan was imbued with more of Ashley's personality.  At the time, I felt that those two actresses should've swapped roles.

Or was the original setup meant to mirror the Kennedy clan?

You know, the original setup was a complete knock-off of Tennessee Williams's play from the 1950s, "Cat On a Hot Tin Roof".  Jock & Miss Ellie were mirror images of Big Daddy and Big Mama; JR and Sue Ellen were Gooper & Mae; Bobby and Pam represented Brick & Maggie of course; and Lucy was the no-neck monster.

I remember seeing the first episode of "Dallas" when I was a little kid, and thinking that Tennessee Williams should have litigated.  But I reckon he was just glad to see someone so anxious to copy him.

There's a novel by Lee Raintree that was published in conjunction with the airing of the 5-episode miniseries that gives a long, detailed history of the Jock, Digger, and Miss Ellie triangle, as well as the boyhoods of JR, Gary, and Bobby.   The novel was based off the original script outlines for the miniseries, not necessarily what aired on television.  It's really a pretty decent read, if you're interested in Southworth and Ewing history.  The novel captures what David Jacobs originally conceived for the series, some of which was subsequently altered for television.

  6. Yeah, Terry Lester was given a "mellow storyline" with the Ellen Winters character and the "shelter" to "redeem him" after he boinked Jill & caused his father to have a heart attack.  But it was a brief interlude, and Terry Lester shrugged it off.

With the Saigon Shack storyline, Peter Bergman was expected to simply wallow in "mellowness" for months & months.  He clearly resented it.  I don't think he ever indicated a racial component was factored in, just felt it was an out-of-character sappy mess that, at the time, seemed unending.  His subsequent comments about disliking the story evidently led the writers to avoid revisiting it.  Probably time to re-address it now, but hopefully without all the sappiness that plagued it the first time.

I never understood the whole PB-vetoes-mentions-of-Keemo gossip. I can understand why he hated the original story but it is canon now so he should be happy there is that entire line of potential family members and stories for him just hanging out there.

Same here.  I can understand why Peter Bergman disliked the original storyline (it was sappy as hell, and the actor who played Keemo was practically as old as Peter Bergman).   But there's certainly still an opportunity to revisit the mess and pull out some grandchildren or in-laws or someone who could shake things up a lil bit.

Oh i was thinking about a detail, Geraldine hated Raven but was friends with her Mother, Same with Katherine Chancellor and Jill Foster, She was Longtime friends with Liz, anyone got an idea who did it first? it's really curiosity no puns intended

Y&R was "first", although the stories were vastly different.  By 1975, Phillip Chancellor was dead, and Kay Chancellor and Jill Foster each blamed the other for his death.

Raven appeared in 1976.  Geraldine never hated her, though.  Geraldine was often OUTDONE with Raven, due to Raven's immature antics.

    Daytime

Y&R Casey Reed, Nikki's sister why they never really tried using her after the 1980's? except for visiting dying Nikki in 1998 we never saw her again and it's kinda unfair that while she initially had her own storyline she became Just Nikki's Older Sister

    PrimeTime

Cassandra Morrel, i could see so many opportunities for Alexis' Sister, I don't blame the Actress for leaving

They never knew what to do with Casey.  She never had much of anything to do, going all the way back to her debut in 1978.  She had great chemistry with David Hasselhoff as Snapper, but Bill Bell didn't wanna break-up Snapper & Chris, so that just left her as Nikki's Older Sister.

Robert Newman is already 3,000 times better than RB, and I’m only 15 minutes in. Burgi was so wooden, as if he were reading his lines. RN makes the stodgy dialogue come alive.

Same here.  I never disliked Burgi (though I found the character awfully dull), but this new guy has injected way more "spark" into the scenes.  It was obvious from the second he looked up at Adam in his very first scene.

I believe Kristoff was recurring also but still listed in the credit cast.

Obviously Kate Linder is in the same boat.

Yep, I suspect that Doug Davidson, Kristoff St. John, Christian LeBlanc, and Kate Linder were ALL dropped to recurring about the same time, but because of their longevity, the show extended them the "courtesy" of not making the status of their "demotions" public.  Doug Davidson made his own status public on Twitter -- said it had been that way for several months -- and soon after he made his public revelation, the credits were revised to reflect what he'd already revealed.  Kristoff (according to Bryton James) was 'terribly worried' about his job security at the time of his death, which seems to indicate the exact same had happened to him.   Christian and Kate seem to be just rolling with the flow, but obviously they're not being treated like contract performers either, regardless of what the credits show.

Tracey/Lauren  did go back on contract for a little between 2013-2015 I think, during the Carmine story.

Ok, thanks, I didn't remember that.  I was thinking she'd been recurring ever since she reappeared.  (My suspicion is that CLB is recurring also, but they're continuing to list him with the contract cast out of "kindness".  Doug Davidson revealed -- in one of his little rants -- that he'd been dropped to recurring long before they removed him from the contract cast list.)

They contracted CLN and TEB for long periods of time while vastly underutilizing them.

From what I remember, didn't CK elect to be recurring when she wanted to pursue prime time?

I believe Tracey E Bregman has been "recurring" for the past 20 or so years.  Christian LeBlanc is "under contract" (according to the show's credit list), but his guaranteed number of episodes seems to be minimal.

  14. 2 hours ago, DramatistDreamer said:

Is CLB going off the canvas? Or is this departure story related?

Christian LeBlanc was theoretically gonna *vanish* for a couple of months, as he was supposed to be in New York in an off-Broadway production of "Cat On a Hot Tin Roof".  But my understanding is that the show was recently postponed until summer of 2022, due to the recent Covid surge.   Looks as though his "adios scenes" were penned prior to the postponement of the play.

It's amazing that the writers can't find ANYTHING resembling a decent storyline for Noah Newman.

Who played Claire and Robert?  Is the actress Brooke Bundy?  I can't recall the actor's name but I know he was on days.  Y&R was mostly unwatchable in 1982. Awful except for Kay, Nikki and Victor. Took Bell a while to find his footing in the hour long format for that show.

Seems like Suzanne Zenor played Claire, and Peter Brown was Robert.  (Bell had worked with them both on "Days", I think.)

Any legitimate gripes Brenda may have have been derailed by her erratic behavior over the years.

Her book was apparently an erratic mess full of typos and exaggerated /false claims.

And she misspelled the names of her co-stars.  In the first edition, Jeanne Cooper became "Jean".  Then Miss Dickson would get on Amazon and give herself a 5-star review with the comment, "I've always wondered what happened to the beautiful and talented Brenda Dickson.  Loved her stories about Jean Cooper!"  And you could tell it was poor Brenda writing the review, lol.

    Huh??

Nikki was more than happy to be Mrs Victor Newman and sit around the ranch for years wallowing in her own (usually self induced) emotional crises. She showed no interest in working beyond attending charity lunches.

Nikki the career gal was a late in life re-invention rather like Katherine the kick ass businesswoman.

Yes, and Lorie Brooks was another re-write.  When she reappeared as Mrs. Max Hollister circa 2001, she was creaming her panties for Victor -- would take him under any circumstances -- although as someone pointed out above, she'd beaten him at his own game in 1982.   Kay Alden felt that needed to be rectified by having her grovel for Victor.

    It was ridiculous.

Just like the absurdity of "Career Gal Nikki" and "Madame CEO Kay Chancellor".
