    The Chair
    by George Strait

Well, excuse me, but I think you've got my chair.
No, that one's not taken, I don't mind
If you sit here, I'll be glad to share.
Yeah, it's usually packed here on Friday nights.

Oh, if you don't mind, could I talk you out of a light.
Well, thank you, could I drink you a buy?
Oh, listen to me, what I mean is can I buy you a drink?
    Anything you please.

Oh, you're welcome, well, I don't think I caught your name.
Are you waiting for someone to meet you here?
Well, that makes two of us glad you came.

No, I don't know the name of the band, but they're good.
Aren't they, would you like to dance?
Yeah, I like the song too, it reminds me of you and me.
Baby do you think there's a chance
That later on I could drive you home?

No, I don't mind at all.
Oh, I like you too, and to tell you the truth
That wasn't my chair after all.
Oh, I like you too, and to tell you the truth
That wasn't my chair after all.

Alexis had plans to go out Friday night, so she had made sure Viola would watch Kristina for a few hours. She really needed to just relax and let her hair down, it had been a long time since she had done so, she was overdue. She didn't want the noise of Luke's place, so she decided she'd take a chance on Carly's place, The Cellar. It was a quiet club in the basement of Kelly's, and sounded like a nice place to just have a drink and unwind. She had just bought this little black dress at Wyndhams and tonight was the perfect night to try it out. She slipped on her black stilettos and grabbed a black shawl from her closet before heading out the door to paint the town red. She used the back entrance of the night club and found herself an empty chair at the bar. She sat down and the bartender asked what she was having to drink. Alexis thought she'd go a little wild tonight and she ordered a Cosmopolitan. It was a night for her to treat herself and she wasn't holding back. As she sat and sipped her drink, she took a look at the other patrons sitting at the bar with her. She crinkled her nose at the gentlemen who looked her way, they just were not her type. She wasn't at all there looking for romance, perhaps just someone to strike up a conversation with.

A handsome gentleman strutted into the club and approached her.

"Excuse me, I believe you are sitting in my chair." he said as he stood behind her.

"Oh, I'm sorry ..." she apologized and stood up from her chair to allow him to sit back down.

"You may sit here, next to me if you want.... I don't think that chair is taken." he replied with a smile. "First time here ...?" he added as he moved her drink closer to her.

"Yeah ... it is .. it's full for a Friday night, isn't it?" she replied.

He noticed that her glass was about empty and offered to buy her a drink. "May I buy you a drink?" he offered.

    "Thank you ... Cosmopolitan."

    "I'm sorry .... I didn't catch your name..."

"Alexis ... Alexis Davis ..." she replied as the bartender sat down a second drink for her.

"Ric Lansing ... " he replied and extended his hand to her.

She took it in hers and noticed he wasn't wearing a wedding ring .. always a good sign in her book.

"Are you waiting for someone?" he asked

"No ... just myself tonight.." she replied with a shy grin.

"Well than it's good I came along .. I hate to see such a beautiful lady sit alone." she blushed at his compliment.

She began to sway her body with the music and he noticed. "Care to dance?"

"Thanks .." he took her hand and she stood up from the chair .."I'm not very good .." she pointed out.

"I'll lead then .." he grinned.

They took a few turns around the dance floor as the three piece trio played and as the song came to an end, he leaned her back in a dip. She laughed and he complimented her again. "You have a wonderful laugh ...." she smiled and quickly composed herself after he stood her up and released her from his arms.

"Thanks for the dance .." she said as she walked back towards the bar, him following close behind.

She reached for her drink and took the last sip in the glass. She was feeling the alcohol as he caught her in his arms when she became off balance. "Perhaps I should take you home ..." he offered.

"Yes I think you should." she accepted.

Ric helped her to his car and sat her in the passenger seat. She put her seat belt on as he got in on the drivers side and then started the car. "Okay ... where to?" he asked. She returned a confused look before comprehending what he had asked her. "Oh .... um .. Bayview Towers...."

As they stood outside her apartment, she fumbled with the keys and tried to unlock the door. Ric took them from her and opened up the door.

"I had a nice time tonight ...." she said as she stepped into the apartment.

"I did too ... do you think we could do it again sometime?"

"Well ... um .. sure I guess ..." she stammered.

"I do have one confession to make though ... to tell you the truth ... that wasn't my chair after all."

    On the docks --

Faith surprised to see Trevor, her first instinct was to rush into his arms, but she thought better of the idea. She and Trevor had had a long on going relationship, both business and personal, but both had cooled off over the past few years. Trevor had divorced from his wife many years ago, it had been said that Faith was the reason for shambles their marriage was in, though in reality there was a lot more to it.

"Long time no see, Faith." Trevor said as he approached her.

"It sure has been a while, Trevor. As always, it's nice to see you again." she purred.

The initial encounter was a little awkward, she unsure of herself and her feelings she still had for this man she had once called her partner in crime.

"What can I do for you, Trevor?"

"I have a business proposition for you Faith."

"Oh you do, hmmm .. is that all you have for me?" she flirted.

"I'd be lying to you if I told you I didn't come here to see you for a more personal reason, but there's a time and a place for everything, Faith. Now's the time for business, pleasure will come later."

She flashed him a smile that would make any warm blooded man beg for mercy. "What is it that you want, Trevor?"

"I want you to stay away from my family, Faith."

"Or else what? You're going to kill me?"

"You will be swimming with the fish before sundown." Trevor threatened.

"Now is that anyway to treat the best lover you've ever had?" she replied as she tried to seduce Trevor by rubbing her hand up and down the front of his chest.

Trevor grabbed her hand and squeezed. "I never said you weren't a smart and sexy woman, Faith. But my family comes first."

"That's funny because you never thought of them before..." she reminded him of their past together.

"Well things change, Faith. Ric is all I have left and I am not going to stand by and let you of all people ruin his life."

"No Trevor, you did that a long time ago." she replied and then her lips pressed against his. "Remember ..."

"Yeah I remember, you're pretty hard to forget."

"Don't worry, Trevor. Ric won't be harmed unless he gets in my way. I just want what he has. And if he gives it up without a fight, I might let him live long enough to enjoy that family of his." she threatened.

Trevor grabbed her arm and squeezed it tight. "No, you listen Faith. You come anywhere near Ric or his family, you will pay dearly. And you know me Faith, I don't threaten, I make promises. You will not live to see the sunrise. You got that?"

Faith knew Trevor didn't make idle threats, he meant every word he said and she knew she'd be as good as dead if she harmed Ric or the family.

Trevor released his grip on her when he saw she got the message loud and clear. "Now you need to get this straight Faith, Ric and his family are to be left alone, and you will take your sexy little ass back to Miami within the next 24 hours, or I will be paying you another visit. And next time, I will not be so gentle with you."

"Oooh, promise..." she replied trying not to let on he shook her with his threats.

Trevor grabbed her arms with both his hands and pulled her to him with one quick jerk. "Promise ..." he replied and then pressed his lips hard against hers, leaving her a bit breathless and shaken.

Trevor turned and walked away from her, leaving her standing on the docks alone, and weak in the knees. He was a man of power and at that moment, she was left feeling she had no other choice but go back to Miami to lick her wounds. At least she was alive to fight another day. She would get her hands on Ric's territory, she just needed to take Trevor out first.

    At the PCPD --

Durant entered the squad room with warrants in his hand. He came upon Mac, Lucky, Zander and Jameson who were still discussing their strategy to bring in Sonny and Ric. Durant slapped the warrants down on the desk.

"Here are the warrants, now go and bring the two of them in!" he ordered as Lucky picked up the warrants and handed the warrant for Sonny to Zander.

"Here, I'll let you do the honors ...." Lucky said as he patted Zander on the shoulder.

"Be careful, Sonny and Ric don't play games. They are to be considered armed and dangerous." Mac said concerned for his men as they went out after the two mob bosses who have run amok in Port Charles for far too long.

Durant approached the holding cage where Carlos Escobar was still waiting for someone to get his statement. "You, I want to talk with you ..." Durant said as he pointed at Carlos.

Another officer unlocked the cage and Carlos was handed over to Durant. "We're going for a little walk ..."

"Ooh where are we going? Carlos asked as Durant took him by the arm and shoved him in the direction he was suppose to go.

"Never you mind where we're going ... walk ...." Durant ordered as he and Carlos headed down the hallway towards his office and gave Carlos another shove.

"Hey, you know this is police brutality?!"

"Shut up and move ...." Durant replied getting annoyed with Carlos' back talk.

They walked down the hallway and stopped at Durant's office door. Durant opened the door and pushed Carlos inside the room.

"Take a seat ..." Carlos did as he was told and sat down in the chair in front of Durant's desk.

"You know you should be extra nice to me if you want the information I have that can put Corinthos away ..."

Durant sat down behind his desk and glared at Carlos. "What is this information you say you have? Perhaps we can make some kind of deal."

"Now see, I don't like to make deals without my attorney. And well, since I don't seem to have one here at the moment, I don't feel oblige to tell you anything.... you know just so I don't incriminate myself."

"Well, why don't we just chalk this up to a friendly conversation off the record. Start singing!"

Carlos didn't see any other choice, he obviously wasn't going to get anywhere with Durant. It wasn't in his best interests to talk, but he knew maybe if he talked he could make some kind of deal later, a deal that would exonerate him and hang Corinthos.

Little did Carlos know but Durant had started to record the entire conversation they were about to have.

    At Greystone --

Two patrol cars pulled up outside Sonny's estate, Zander and Jameson were sent there to do a job and they were going to execute the warrants they had been given. They waited till more back up arrived before entering the premises. Once more patrol cars had arrived, the two emerged from their car, guns drawn before they hit the front door of the mansion. No guards at the front gate which seemed a little odd, and the two approached the situation with caution.

As the two stormed the house, they found no one on the inside, an empty house was all quiet, little did they know they had tripped an invisible wire when they opened the front door. A keen eyed Jameson noticed something on the far wall of the foyer.

"Everyone out! Now!" Jameson grabbed the back of Zander's jacket and pulled him back out the front door.

Before anyone knew what had hit them, the mansion exploded. Jameson and Zander fell forward from the impact of the blast, landing close to the patrol cars, face down in the dirt. The other officers took cover behind the patrol cars to protect themselves from the explosion.

It was getting late and Alexis said goodnight to Ric, the children were waiting for her at the cabin with Viola. She hadn't spent any time with them on her brief return to home earlier that day. She gave Ric a soft kiss goodbye and walked towards the door. She looked over her shoulder to see him smile, one last reassurance for her that everything was going to be all right. Greg waited for her outside Ric's room, ready to take her where ever she wanted to go. The two of them said goodnight to Frankie, who stood guard outside Ric's room, and then they headed for the elevators.

The night was sure to be lonely for Ric as he had not spent one night without Alexis since they had married. He closed his eyes and tried to get the well needed sleep his body was asking for. As he slept, the elevator doors opened and a well dressed man stepped out. He seemed to not know where he was to go next but he followed the hallway to find Ric's room.

Frankie noticed the stranger looked lost and approached him. "Can I help you, sir?" The gentleman was startled by the young man. "Yes, I guess I'm a little lost. I'm looking for Ric Lansing's room?"

Frankie skeptical of the stranger and would need to know more about him before getting close to Ric or his room. "May I ask who you are, sir and why you've come looking for Mr. Lansing?"

"I understand, you must be one of Ric's bodyguards? I'm sorry I should of introduced myself, I'm Ric's father, Trevor Lansing." the older gentleman extended his hand to Frankie.

"Hello sir, Mr. Lansing didn't mention you would be visiting this evening."

"I don't think he knew I was coming early, I was to arrive tomorrow. I heard about the shooting and I came a day early. I guess I should of called him."

Frankie looked through the glass window in the door to see Ric sleeping peacefully and made a decision not to disturb him. "I'm sorry sir, but your son is sleeping, maybe you want to come back tomorrow?"

"I'd really just like to tell him I'm here, do you think I could sit with him for a while?"

Frankie hesitant but he opened the door for Trevor and left him inside. Trevor walked into Ric's room, the room dark but a dim light was lit above Ric's head. Trevor sat down on the chair next the bed and reached for his son's hand. Ric felt the touch of a masculine hand and his eyes slowly opened to see his father sitting next to him.

"What are you doing here?" Ric asked still not fully awake and coherent.

"I heard you were shot and I jumped on the next plane out of Miami."

"You didn't have to do that .... I wasn't expecting you for another day or so." Ric replied as he propped himself up against the pillows that supported his back.

"I know but you're my son, I wasn't going to not be here with you. How are you feeling?" Trevor replied concerned for his son.

"I'll be fine ...." Ric winced in pain as he adjusted his position.

    "And the family?..."

    "They're safe .... I have guards on them 24 hours a day."

"I'm sure you do. Faith is not one to take lightly."

    "You know Faith is here?"

"Yeah I figured she'd make her way up here after she left her mark on Miami. She's out for blood, Ric."

"Yeah I take notice." Ric chuckled under his breath.

"Why don't you let me handle Faith? You're in no shape to run things." Trevor replied worried about his son.

"Thanks but no thanks. I've got things under control."

"Yeah I see that." Trevor raised an eyebrow.

"I'm not 10 anymore, dad .. you don't have to protect me. I can take care of myself, my family and my business. Even if it's from a hospital bed." Ric replied hoping to convince his father he didn't need his help against Faith.

"Look, I know you can, I'm just concerned that Faith will come back and do the job right the next time, Ric. She knows you're vulnerable now, she's got you where she wants you."

Ric knew his father was right. Faith wasn't going to stop till she got what she came for. Trevor saw Ric's hesitation to give up control on his territory and pressed him even more.

"Think of it this way, I still own partial shares in this territory, I'm protecting my investment. You can still run the organization from this bed, I'll just be out there where Faith can see me and she can think that you are unable to run this business, but really, you've just added re-enforcements."

"I can't let you do that. I can't just let you put yourself out there in the open for Faith."

"You're not letting me do anything .... I'm volunteering. Your objection is dually noted." Trevor replied hoping that Ric would agree to his plan.

Ric's meeting with his father was interrupted by one of his men who had rushed to inform him of some not so good news. Frankie opened the door and Johnny stepped into the room.

"I'm sorry for interrupting sir, but we have problems." Johnny said not wanting to upset his boss.

"What's the problem, Johnny? Don't tell me there's trouble with the shipment that came in tonight?"

    "Yes sir ... it's missing."

Not wanting Ric to get more upset then he already was, Trevor stepped in.

"What do you mean it's missing?" he asked. Johnny hesitating to speak freely.

"It's okay, Johnny. He's my father ... you can tell him."

"We unloaded the crates, took inventory of what had been delivered, and somehow now the entire shipment has been removed from the warehouse."

Trevor raised an eyebrow. "Sounds like Faith has struck again."

"No I don't think so, sir. I recognized a few of the men as they took off with it."

    "Who were they, Johnny ...."

"They were part of Alcazar's crew, sir."

"Could Faith be working with Lorenzo?" Trevor asked, knowing of Lorenzo Alcazar, he had dealings with him in the past.

"If she is, he's dumber than I thought." Ric replied not amused by the latest developments.

"What do you want us to do now, sir?"

"Go see Lorenzo ... I want my damn shipment back! Take Mario and Ian with you."

"Yes sir." Johnny replied and went to do as instructed.

"If Faith has struck a deal with Lorenzo, you can bet she has organized a fatal assault against your territory, Ric."

"Yeah, yeah ..." Ric waved off his father's concern.

"Faith is no one to mess with Ric ... she will eat you alive if you are not careful. I know I've been up against her before and she takes no prisoners."

The more Ric thought about his father's plan, the more it became the only way to hold on to his territory. He needed his father's help, though he didn't want to admit it and was hesitant to agree to such a foolish plan, but it was his only option at this point.

    "Okay .... "

    "Okay....what?" Trevor questioned.

"If this plan of yours doesn't work, and you get hurt or worse ... I will never forgive myself." Ric replied and agreed to Trevor's plan.

"Oh it's going to work, don't you worry about that. Faith can't resist a vulnerable territory, but little will she know, and I'll be there waiting for her." Trevor replied and walked towards the door to leave.

    "Dad ....."

    "Yeah ...."

"Thanks. If this works, I owe you one."

"Ric ... you won't owe me anything. I'm protecting my son, that's my job." Trevor turned and left Ric alone to get the rest he needed to get well.

    Episode 4

    At Greystone ...

Sonny poured himself another drink and walked over and sat down in the chair behind his mahogany desk. The file that laid staring up at him he pushed aside and reached for the phone.

Sonny dialed the phone and called Benny, his financial adviser and accountant.

"Benny, call together the 5 families. Tell them I'm requesting a meeting." Sonny instructed and then he hung up the phone as Jason entered the living room.

He got up from his seat and swallowed the alcohol that was in his glass as he approached Jason.

"So, what do you have for me?" he asked his right hand man.

"Not much ... But I can tell you that it looks like Faith has her self wrapped up with Lorenzo. Shipments are not going in or out of PC for the time being and Lorenzo is fit to be tied."

"Good ... put the pressure on him maybe he'll crack." Sonny replied thinking of what his next move would be.

"Oh I wouldn't doubt it. He's losing millions as the stuff sits in the warehouse and can't be moved anywhere else."

"Let's hope that it's soon, because the longer Faith is in town, the worse it's going to be for all of us." Sonny refilled his glass and offered one to Jason. Jason refused and was going to continue his thought but was interrupted.

Max came into the living room and announced there was someone who wanted to see them. Sonny asked Max who was there, but before Max could tell Sonny, the visitor barged into the living room.

"I'm sure the boss will have no objections to seeing me, right Sonny?" the visitor exclaimed as he entered the room.

"When I thought it couldn't get any worse ..." Sonny replied as he and Jason both surprised to see who was wanting to see them.

"What? No hug for your dear old dad?" Trevor said sarcastically.

"You are NOT my father, and God help anyone who you call son."

"Now Sonny is that anyway to talk to the only decent father you've ever known?"

"Trevor, I had no use for you when I was growing up, and I certainly don't have any use for you now!"

"Okay, fine, I won't offer my help to take down Faith. You know Sonny, you need my help. Without me, Faith will eat you alive!" Trevor tempted Sonny.

Sonny looked up with interest piqued and wondering what Trevor had planned. "What did you have in mind?"

    Outside Greystone --

The explosion rocked the neighborhood and soon the TV crew was on the scene, as the officers tried to get their bearings in the aftermath. The fire and rescue units were called and the street soon became a chaotic disaster area. Unknown as to who was in the house when it exploded, Sonny and his family were everyone's concern.

    Cabin safehouse --

Alexis had just put the girls to bed and had sat down on the couch. She curled up in the corner of the sofa and threw the afghan over her for warmth. Ric had walked into the living room and sat down beside as his cell phone began to ring.

    "Lansing ...." he answered

"Boss, turn on the news .. you are never going to believe what has happened!" Thomas replied.

Ric and Alexis stared at the chaos surrounding Greystone as shocked looks came over their faces. Ric still hanging on the line with Thomas .... "Get me all the info you can, Thomas! I want details and I want them now!"

"Oh my God, Sonny and ....." Alexis overwhelmed with what she was watching unfold on television.

Ric pulled her close to him as they sat and watched the news report about the explosion and what was known at this time, which wasn't much according to the local news station.

Ric fought the urge to go back to town to find Sonny, but Alexis held him back and reminded him that he was also in danger, that he would be safer staying at the cabin. He hoped that someone would be calling with information to put his mind at ease about Sonny and the family.

A few blocks from the chaos --

"It went off without a hitch." said the dark figure hidden in the shadows as he talked into his cell phone.

    "Good .... keep me informed."

The dark figure closed the phone and stood at a safe distance watching the chaos unfold as news crews showed up on the scene, and fire and rescue extinguished the flames. Flashing lights lit up the neighborhood as police cars arrived one right after the other. It was a spectacle to witness. Things were going as planned and no one suspected a thing.

    On the docks --

Faith knowing full well that Trevor would follow through with his threats, she was planning on living to fight another day. She met with Lorenzo to tell him what had happened and to tell him she was going back to Miami. She would come up with another way to get Sonny and Ric's territory. She had to take out Trevor first. Lorenzo realized this might be the opportunity he was waiting for, he could move forward with the plans to gain the territory without Faith's help. It was already set into motion, they had done all the work over the past few months, he wasn't about to let it all go to waste. Trevor was after Faith, not him, he could do it alone and take it all for himself. He didn't need Faith for the plan to work.

    At the hospital --

Emily and the family were informed that there were complications, but they were treatable. Relieved to hear, Emily breathed a little easier. She tried to call Zander to let him know, but she got his voice mail. She had been prescribed bed rest and plenty of it. The less stress she incurred the better, which seemed impossible being a cop's wife, but she had to try for the sake of their baby. She tried calling Zander over and over, but to no avail, he wasn't picking up. She began to worry about him and fear the worst. Her parents there with her, tried to keep her calm and relaxed but her mind just began to wander and to think of the worst case scenarios. Being a cop's wife, it came second nature. Her worries escalated when Monica got a page to go to the ER, there had been an explosion and a few officers were injured.

Emily feared the worst and it took everything in her to stay in bed instead of going down to the ER to see if one of those officers was her husband.

    Coming up --

    - There's a new threat in town
    - Emily receives word about Zander
    - Ric and Alexis fear the worst about Sonny and the family
    - Lorenzo sets a plan into motion to take over the territory

It had been a few days since Elizabeth had heard from Jason and she was now getting worried. He was never gone this long without calling her. She had double checked the locks downstairs and had retired for the evening by turning out all the lights and heading upstairs to the bedroom. The house felt so empty without him in it, the bed felt so cold as she lay awake hoping she could fall asleep without him by her side. The fear of hearing the worst had been bringing her nightmares when she closed her eyes at night, she didn't want to fall asleep but she knew she had to.

She pulled the covers up over her shoulders and turned onto her side and faced into his side of the bed, still empty, still cold. She missed him so much. As she lay there, she had this overwhelming feeling of something awful had happened. Fearing for her husband, she opened up the nightstand and pulled out the cell phone she kept there. She quickly dialed, he didn't answer. She called the next person who would know what could be happening. She dialed the number feverishly, her fingers pushing down the keys on the keypad quickly. It rang, and rang, finally someone familiar answered on the other end.

"Hello..." the voice said groggily. "Sonny .. It's Elizabeth. Have you heard from Jason?" she said now hysterical and worried about him. Sonny heard the worry and concern in her voice and tried his best to calm her down over the phone.

"Elizabeth? What's wrong? He isn't back yet?" Sonny replied now concerned himself about Jason.

"No Sonny, damn it! He's not back yet! And I have an awful feeling something's happened." There was a brief pause without any word from Jason's best friend, Elizabeth repeated her words to him again.

"Okay.....we'll be right over." Was all Sonny said and the phone line went dead.

    *******************

Emily was pacing the hardwood floor of the bedroom as she kept checking on Devon making sure he was alright, not knowing what to do or who to call. Zander wasn't back from his business trip and she was getting worried about him. He always called to check on her and Devon, no matter what time it was, Zander called. She was restless, couldn't sleep, concerned and fearful something had happened.

She had just come back from checking on Devon when the silence was broken by the ring of the telephone. She rushed to pick it up hoping it was Zander. As she picked up the receiver, a feeling rushed over her, a horrible feeling that this phone call was not good news.

"H-Hello Zander?!" a brief pause before the voice on the other end answered her.

"No sweetie, it's mom." Emily's heart sank to the floor, her insides contracted and she felt the worst had happened. Without giving her mother a chance to say anything her eyes welled with tears.

"Oh my God! Mom, is he alright? Tell me he's alright!" she said frantically. She trembled as she held the phone to her ear and listened to her mother explain the reason for the call.

"Emily, sweetie....you need to stay calm and listen to me. Okay." Emily's insides quivered with fear as she trembled and tried to reply to her mom's request.

    "O-Okay..I'll try." Emily stammered.

"You need to get Devon. You and he need come to GH, we're in the ER. I'll explain when you get here." There was no reply from Emily on the other end.

"Em! Emily! You still there....honey...you need to get to GH. Zander's been shot." Emily hadn't heard the last remarks from her mother as she left the phone dangling on the floor, she had rushed to Devon's room and got him dressed and bundled to go to the hospital.

Emily packed the diaper bag and wrapped Devon in a blanket, took him back to their room and got dressed. She and Devon rushed down the stairs and out the door. She needed to get to the hospital .. her husband needed her. She met Louie at the elevator, he had been standing guard at the front door since earlier that evening. He noticed she was frantically trying to get the elevator to open up, when he asked her what was wrong. She tried to explain that she needed to get to GH and that Zander had been brought in. Louie escorted her to the car and helped her with Devon into the back of the limo. He drove her as fast as he could to the ER and walked her in to find her mother.

"Mom!" Emily shouted as she rushed into the ER with Devon in her arms. "Where's Zander? How is he?"

    EPISODE 46

    The PCPD Squad Room --

"If he tells you everything, Ric .... Zander will be lucky to be out for his daughter's wedding! I have to defend and protect my client."

"I know but ...." Ric began but was interrupted.

"Alexis ... I love you, you know that .. and you have been the best thing that has ever happened to me, with the exception of Emily. The two of you have stood by me through it all and you've taken the heat for me on more times than I care to count. But this time .... this time if I don't do this, Ric is going to throw away everything *he* has worked so hard for. I can't allow him to do that." Zander confessed his appreciation.

Alexis leaned in to him and kissed him on the cheek. "You do what you think you have to, Zander. I'll stand by your decision."

"Thank you, Alexis." Zander spoke softly.

"So .... are you going to get a statement here or not?" Ric spoke up.

"Yeah you are." Zander replied as he sat down at the long metal table, Alexis sitting down next to him.

"Are you sure about this?" she asked again.

"Yeah I am, Alexis .... It's my only option. It's time I cleaned up my own mess."

She not sure what he meant by that but went along with his decision to make a statement about Greg and the dealings over the past 6 months.

Ric sat down across from him and pushed across the table a yellow legal pad and the pen from his shirt pocket. Zander pulled the tablet towards him and Alexis snatched the pen before Zander's hand reached it.

"I'm sorry, but if you want me to defend your actions here, I need some promises made for you." she said and Ric sighed knowing what was coming next.

"Like what?" Zander asked as Alexis and Ric exchanged looks.

"Don't Alexis .... " Ric said knowing what she was about to ask even before she asked it.

"Before he confesses to anything .... lay your cards out Mr. DA." she smirked as she looked over her black rimmed glasses.

"No deals, Alexis!" Zander replied upset with her for even trying to make a deal for him.

"Yes deals, Zander! I told you before we sat down that I would stand by your decision to do this, but for Pete's sake let me defend you!" she scolded.

Zander sighed in defeat, he knew she'd get her way anyways, he caved early to save the time. "That's better." she grinned.

"Alexis, it depends on what he tells me, I can't give you a blanket deal." Ric replied knowing that's what she was after.

"Sure you can, Ric. Look, if Zander gives you what you want to know, and there's no charges to be filed on him then we'll save the deal for another time .... I'm sure there will be another mess and we'll need it." she smiled.

Ric grinned. She knew darn well that he couldn't resist her charm and persuasive ways. "Okay ... because you know I can't resist your persuasive charm, I'll lay a deal out on the table."

Alexis grinned because she knew she had it in her to charm the pants off that man if she wanted. Zander snatched the pen back from Alexis's hand. Before he had a chance to write anything down, Ric grabbed the pen back from him.

"Now what? Are you two going to let me do this or not?" Zander now getting anxious to clear the air.

"Forget writing to down, just tell me. I'll have to type up a report regardless. Besides the faster you tell me, the faster you can get out of here." Ric replied as he stuck the pen back in his shirt pocket.

"What do you want to know?" Zander sighed.

"I want to know everything ... the dealings with Lorenzo, Jason .... and Greg." Ric replied as he leaned forward against the table. "And if you had anything to do with Lorenzo's bank statements being sent here to me."

"Bank statements, no sorry can't say that I can take credit for that one. You got bank statements?"

"Yeah and a lot of money has been transferred, I mean a lot of money in and out of Lorenzo's account. I kinda figured they were transactions for the contracts he put out on you."

"I wouldn't doubt it. I have to give that man credit though, he is persistent."

"Don't give him too much credit, he almost succeeded." Ric replied.

The Courtroom - Zander testifies --

Zander looked over at Sonny sitting at the table to his left and felt nothing, there was no love for the man who shot his stepfather. Sonny was in for a rude awakening if he thought he was going to get away with raping his mother and killing Frank. Zander assumed that Sonny remembered all of what happened that night, the argument that ensued between he and Frank, he didn't realize that much of that night and led up to it was a big black hole for Sonny too.

Ric saw that Zander was in distress about telling his story and nodded in encouragement. Zander glanced at Ric and then at Emily before he began, he knew he had the support of his family to help him through this.

"Please tell us Zander, what transpired that night." Ric coaxed.

"Um, it was after midnight, and I couldn't sleep. So I went downstairs to the kitchen to get a drink. I saw the light on in my father's office, which wasn't unusual, he often worked late. I didn't hear any voices coming from the office as I passed to go to the kitchen. I got my drink and walked back passed the office to the stairs. Voices were now arguing and very loudly." Zander stopped as Ric interrupted him.

"And how old were you, Zander?" Ric asked.

"I was 8 years old. And I was curious as to what was going on in the office, so I stood and listened at the door. It wasn't closed tight, but I stayed out of sight just the same." Zander continued.

"And who was arguing inside Frank's office?" Ric asked.

"Um, it was Frank and his right hand man, Michael Corinthos." Zander replied as he looked at Sonny.

"And Michael Corinthos for the record is Sonny Corinthos, is that right?"

"Yes, Michael Corinthos was the name Sonny used while he worked for my ... for Frank." Zander replied and corrected himself.

"And Zander, do you remember what the argument was about? Please tell the court."

"The argument was about my mother. Frank accused Michael of sleeping with my mother and betraying him by doing so." Zander replied as images of what was said flashed in his head.

Ric looked towards Sonny and then back at Zander. "Was this affair consensual, Zander? Or did Mr. Corinthos rape your mother?"

"Your Honor! Rape was not specified in the list of charges against my client, it should not be mentioned now!" Victoria stood up from her seat and objected to the line of questions.

"Your Honor, the mention of rape wasn't mentioned in the charges because the statute of limitations has run out for the charge, plus it is part of the argument that led up to the killing of Frank Smith. It is very much relevant in this case." Ric argued.

"Sit down counselor. The word rape will be removed from your question Mr. Lansing." Judge Cooper ordered.

Ric turned towards Zander and asked again. "Was the affair consensual?"

Zander looked up at the judge for approval to answer. "No it was not. And Frank was furious with Michael for taking advantage of my mother."

"And how long before this argument did this non consensual affair happen?" Ric asked and noticed Zander's eyes as he asked the question, knowing his answer would shock Sonny right out of his shoes.

"About 8 years prior to the night Frank died."

"8 years? Huh? Would it be a pretty good assumption that you Zander Smith were a result of that non consensual affair between Michael Corinthos and Frank's wife?"

Zander sat in the witness box, his eyes locked onto Sonny's, he wanted to see the reaction to the man who was his father. "Yes it would be, Mr. Lansing."

Those sitting in the courtroom gasped and whispers could be heard from the back of the courtroom. Sonny did react in any way to Zander's revelation. Victoria though gave her client a good long look.

"What happened next?" Ric asked after the courtroom got silent once again.

"Frank threatened Michael and told him that he would pay for his betrayal. I saw Frank pull the gun out of his desk drawer and point it at Michael. Michael then pulled his gun and pointed it at Frank. He told Frank that he wouldn't be paying for his crimes, that Frank would." Zander replied.

    "And then what happened?"

"Then Michael shot Frank before Frank could shoot him." Zander startled as the sound of a gunshot went off in his head.

"Thank you, Zander. No further questions. You're witness." Ric replied as he passed Victoria and sat down at the table with Alexis.

Victoria rose from her seat and buttoned her jacket. Sonny staring directly at Zander still in the witness box. Victoria approached the stand with a legal pad in her hand.

"Wow, this must of been very traumatic for you, Mr. Smith, being only 8 years old at the time. Why didn't you come forward about this alleged crime till now?" Victoria asked.

"I didn't come forward about this till now, because I didn't remember till now." Zander answered as his eyes locked on Emily sitting in the front row. Her smile encouraging him.

"If I may ask, Mr. Smith .. what kind of business are you in?"

"Objection, your honor. Mr. Smith's business is not relevant to this case." Ric objected as he stood up from his seat.

"It certainly is your Honor. Goes to credibility and character of this witness." Victoria replied.

"I'll allow it. Mr. Smith answer the counselor's question."

Zander cleared his throat and looked towards Alexis and Ric for an okay to answer Victoria's line of questioning. Alexis nodded it was okay to answer. Being that Ric was the DA in this case, Alexis had agreed to become Zander's attorney on record.

"I'm in the import and export business." Zander replied with hestitation.

"Oh so you're following in your father's footsteps?" Victoria asked. Zander knew where she was going with these questions and hesitated to play along.

"After Frank died, my uncle took over my father's company. Until a few years ago, after he died, I inherited the company and all it's holdings."

"Have you ever been arrested, Mr. Smith?" Victoria shot back.

"Your Honor, where is this going? Zander Smith is not on trial here." Ric got up from his seat and question trying to save Zander from the line of questioning from Victoria.

"Move it along, counselor." Judge Cooper ordered.

"Isn't it true that DA Ric Lansing is your brother?" Victoria asked as she moved off the topic of Zander's business.

"Yes it's true. He's my half brother." Zander replied.

"Half brother? Your mother is Ric's mother, isn't that right?"

"Yes that's right. He's 12 years old then I am."

"And where was he the night Frank Smith was shot?" Victoria asked glaring at Ric.

"He was at boarding school. He wasn't home much, just summer vacations." Zander quickly replied wondering where she was going with this.

"So Ric wasn't in the house that night?"

"No he wasn't." Zander locked his eyes on Ric and gave him a look of confusion.

    "Are you sure?"

"Your Honor, I think it was established that I was not in the house that night, it's been asked and answered." Ric spoke up.

"He's right counselor. You asked, and the witness answered. Any other questions for this witness?" Judge Cooper asked from the bench.

Victoria flipped through some paperwork that laid on the table, Sonny's eyes never leaving his focus on Zander.

"Yes your Honor I do. Are we to believe that Mr. Corinthos is your biological father?" she asked and Zander stiffened in his seat.

"Yes that's right." Zander replied glaring at Sonny.

"So this would mean you will be testifying against your own father?" she asked hoping to spark something inside the witness to make it apparent there are old wounds left open.

Zander took a deep breath before answering. He knew what she was up to and wasn't going to let her get the better of him to blow the case against Sonny.

"Sonny Corinthos killed a man 15 years ago, he needs to be punished for the crime. It doesn't matter who is, Frank Smith was the only father I knew and that man killed him!"

Zander's answer surprised her, she was expecting an outburst from him, but he kept calm and answered her question directly with no hesitation.

"No further questions." Victoria said in defeat and took her seat.

"You may step down, Mr. Smtih. Court will adjourn while it deliberates on the case at hand." Judge Cooper replied with the stroke of his gavel.

Zander stepped down from the witness box and walked in a bee line to Emily. She stood up and greeted him with a loving embrace. "You did great up there, I am so proud of you." she replied as he held onto her tightly.

Now came the waiting, waiting for the judge to come back with his decision, Zander hoping there was enough to indict Sonny for the murder of his father.

    EPISODE 27

    Zander's ICU room --

Elenore was unaware of Emily's presence in the room as Alexis wheeled her in to see Zander. "How is he?" Emily asked and startled Elenore.

    "He's the same, dear."

"May I?" Emily asked implying she'd like to sit with her husband.

"Oh sure, dear. Alexis and I will go get some coffee or something." Elenore replied as she and Alexis left Emily with Zander.

Emily wheeled herself to Zander's bedside and reached for his hand to hold it. She quickly felt a light squeeze and she knew that he realized she was there with him. She brought his hand to her lips and softly kissed it as tears welled in her eyes.

"Zander .. baby, I know you can hear me." she whispered to him as her other hand brushed back the nagging forelock from his eyes.

"I want you to listen to me, okay .... we're going to survive this, you are going to be as good as new soon and I will be here waiting for you." she whimpered as she felt another squeeze on her hand.

"Devon misses you, he loves his daddy so much." Emily said as she continued to talk to her husband.

It had been about 6 hours since Zander came out of surgery, and Emily was hoping by now he'd be waking up. She sat a little longer with him, caressing his hand and talking to him, just so he'd know she was there with him.

As she sat with him, she looked up and saw her parents standing just beyond the plexiglass window. She laid Zander's hand down and wheeled herself out into the hallway, her father holding the door open for her.

"I hope Dr. Meadows gave you the okay to be out of bed, young lady?" Alan scolded.

"Dad, I'm not 10 years old anymore. And yes, Dr. Meadows said it was okay for me to out of bed." Emily replied with a smirk.

"There's no change?" Monica asked about Zander.

"Not yet, he's still hasn't woken up. And to tell you the truth, I'm scared. He should of woken up by now."

Alan stood behind Emily and comforted her as he caressed her shoulders. "Give it a few more hours, he's only been out of surgery 6 hours, sometimes it takes longer for some patients to come out of it."

Emily sat with her parents in the waiting area across the corridor from Zander's room, she wanted to be near him in case he woke up.

"How's Devon? Is he being a good little boy for you?" Emily asked.

"Devon is just fine, he's really keeping Alice on her toes." They all chuckled at the thought.

"I just wanted to thank you both for taking care of Devon while all this is going on."

"There is no need to thank us, Emily. Devon is our grandson, of course we would take good care of him for you."

"I know, but I also know how Dad and Zander are, and ...."

"And Devon is no part of that. Zander and I have problems yes, and probably always will, but I don't hold that against Devon."

"I know, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to imply that the two of you ...." Emily hung her head as she realized what her words had sounded like to her parents.

The three of them were startled to hear the alarm coming from one of machines in Zander's room. Monica rushed into the room to see what had happened, while Alan wheeled Emily to the doorway and told her to wait.

"Zander! ....." Emily cried out to her husband.

Monica checking the machines to find which one's alarm was blaring, and soon the sound stopped. As Monica turned off the alarm, she noticed a pair of eyes staring up at her.

"Sorry." Zander whispered to her as a smile came over Monica's face.

Alan realized that Zander had woken up and wheeled Emily to his bedside.

Zander felt Emily's hand intertwine with his and he rolled his head towards her and smiled.

"Hi ..." he whispered, his throat feeling like cotton.

"Hi." Emily smiled at him so glad that he was awake.

"We're going to leave the two of you alone, but only if you, Zander promise not to pull anymore alarms."

Zander smiled, wanting to laugh, but it hurt too much. Monica took his smile as a promise and she and Alan left Emily with her husband.

"Aren't you .." the words barely escaped Zander's lips, he trying to talk but with the cotton feeling in his throat, it was making it difficult.

"Shhh .. don't try to talk, okay. And yes I'm suppose to be in bed, but Dr. Meadows said it would be okay if I came and sat with you for a while." Emily reassuring her husband that she would be okay there with him.

She drew his hand to her lips and kissed them softly, thankful he was alive and grateful that he would be able to see his children grow up. It was her worst fear that Zander wouldn't be able to see his children grow up and be happy. She felt his hand caress her jaw and she leaned into it.

Zander wanted to tell her just how much he loved her, and it took all that was within him to do so. "I love you so much, Zander." she whimpered as tears welled up in her eyes.

    "I .... love you .. too."

    EPISODE 45

    The PCPD --

Zander and Alexis stood out on the stoop of the PCPD for a few moments, Zander deciding what to do next. He couldn't allow Ric to take the fall for him this time, Ric could lose the DA position over this, heck lose his license to practice law in NY. He couldn't let that happen.

Zander stormed back into the squad room and saw Ric from across the room carrying an arm full of file folders, heading back to his office.

"Ric! Wait!" Zander called out to his brother and Ric stopped to wait for him.

"I thought I told you ..." Ric said as Zander pulled him into the interrogation room to talk privately.

"Yeah you did, but I can't let you do this Ric. I can't let you take this risk, I don't want to have this on my head, Ric."

Ric set down the paperwork on the table, and Zander noticed what the files contained as one flipped open accidentally. His name was on all of them and his eyes widened as he realized what Ric was planning on doing.

"Ric, what were you going to do with these files?" Zander asked and Ric realized that Zander had seen what they contained and quickly flipped closed the open folder.

"Never you mind what I am going to do with them, the less you know the better."

"Okay, that's usually my line, so what gives?" Zander questioned wanting to know what Ric's plans were.

Ric sighed. "If you must know .... I'm making this all go away ... okay?"

"No, it's not okay, Ric! I won't allow you to do this for me. I've done a lot of stuff in the last 5 years .... and every time you bail me out! I can't let you do it this time. This could very well cost you, your job!"

"Yeah well, to see you finally safe and happy with your family, it will be worth it!"

"No, Ric, it won't! I don't want you to have to give up your career for me! I never asked you to compromise your job Ric!"

Ric cleared his throat and pulled out the immunity deal that laid on top of the pile. Zander saw what he pulled from the pile and took back what he said. "Okay just that once. But Ric, this is a major decision and something you shouldn't have to do. I'll do the time if I have to, Ric!"

"No you're not .. now dammit let me do this for you .... Geesh!" Ric replied and he gathered the files in his arms once more, and headed for the door to leave.

Zander stopped Ric from leaving the room as he blocked Ric's path. "You are too good for this Ric! You're the good brother, remember? This is how it's always been .... I get into a jam and you clean up the mess ... well not anymore!"

Ric saw something in Zander's eyes, something that hadn't been there before and he realized Zander was ready to take what ever punishment there was for this mess he had gotten himself into. Zander was right, he had always cleaned up after his brother, never allowing charges to be filed, keeping his ass out of jail the best he could. Zander this though, stepped up to the plate to save him for a change.

Ric set the files back down on the table. "Tell me about Greg, tell me everything, if you're so willing to take the heat this time." Ric said just as Alexis walked in.

"Zander .. don't tell him anything." she spoke up as she entered the room and closed the door.

"Alexis, I have to. It's my only chance to clear this up."

"Look, we're all family here, right? We've been a part of each other's lives since the beginning ... I know we want to protect him Alexis, but this time .... I don't know if we can."

  16. SoapQueen89
    The PCPD Squad Room --

Ric walked into the squad room with a purpose, the folder in his hand. He slammed down the folder on the desk of an unexpecting police officer. As he did, Mac came out from the interrogation room wondering what was going on in his squad room.

"What is going on out here?!" Mac asked as he approached Ric was obviously upset about something.

"You tell me that Sonny isn't walking out of here tonight, Mac?! Give me something we can hold him on!" Mac hung his head. He knew Ric wanted Sonny so bad he could taste it, but Mac didn't have enough evidence to hold him this time.

"I'm sorry Ric, we don't have anything but Zander's word for it. The other evidence got thrown out, loopholes from the previous investigation." Mac replied somberly. He wanted as much as Ric did to get Sonny for killing Frank, but screw ups in the previous investigation prevented some evidence to be presented to the court, and without it, they had nothing to charge Sonny with.

Mac and Ric stood together as Sonny emerged from the interrogation room. "Can we remove the cuffs now?" Sonny's attorney said as she stood beside her client.

"Spencer, remove the cuffs." Mac ordered.

Lucky hesitated. "Now, Spencer." Mac ordered again. "Yes sir." Lucky did as he was ordered to and released Sonny's wrists from the cuffs.

As Sonny walked past Ric, he smirked and said smugly .... "Better luck next time, counselor."

Ric's angered eyes followed Sonny towards the door. It took everything he had inside him not to grab Sonny but he left him go. He would have his day with Sonny and when he did, he'd be sure no one would be witness to it.

Ric muttered to himself .... "Don't you worry, Sonny .... next time will be here sooner then you know."

    Ric's Office --

Ric stormed out of the squad room and back to his office. He was angry, he was frustrated and he was going to put Sonny Corinthos behind bars for what he had done to his family if was the last thing Ric would ever do. He reached his office and slammed the door. He chuckled to himself and wondered what his colleague, Alexis would think about his behavior now, she'd probably send him to see the shrink.

It was back to square one with the case against Sonny. He was just hoping that after 15 years, those who were interviewed back then would be willing to talk with police now. He sat down behind his desk and reached for the file folder on this case. As he did there was a knock at his door.

"Yeah, come in!" he shouted from behind his desk. The door opened slowly and his visitor peered inside.

"I'm not going to get hit or anything if I come in, am I?" Steele joked.

"Nah, not right away, Steele. Come on in." Ric chuckled as he invited the Detective into his office.

"Look, I'm sorry about the case falling through like it did. But all is not lost, sir." Steele said as he stepped into Ric's office and closed the door.

"Not all lost? As of right now, yeah it is." Ric said as he flipped open the file folder.

"Not quite yet. I still have a few aces up my sleeve. Would you like to hear the hand I have yet to deal?" Steele replied and what he had to say certainly interested Ric.

"Sure, pull up a chair, Steele. Tell me about it." Ric replied as Steele accepted Ric's offer and sat down.

"I don't think we can get Mr. Corinthos on murder charges, but that may change in time, but what I do have is evidence, hard evidence that can convict him on numerous other charges. At least it would give us time to gather the evidence we need for that murder charge." Steele said.

"What other charges are we talking about, Steele?"

"The kind that can put a man away for the next 20 to 25 years. The kind that would consist of drug running from here to Florida and back again."

What Steele had to say piqued Ric's interest. Whatever would tie up Sonny's attorney for a while was good enough for him. It would buy them some time to gather evidence for a murder conviction.

"And how did you come about this evidence?" Ric asked as he leaned forward in his chair.

"Various sources, but mostly from digging in the right places and talking to the right people." Steele replied, though vague with his answer.

"I'm listening." Ric replied wanting to hear more.

"Friends of mine in a different precinct have folders on Mr. Corinthos, dating back 10 to 15 years, but just didn't have enough to charge him with anything in particular. Witnesses paid off, disappeared or worse. Evidence collected disappeared or not logged and fell through the cracks ... there was always something that happened to force the release of Mr. Corinthos. But all of it put together would bring some mighty hefty charges against him....perhaps Federal charges as well." Steele explained.

"I see. Am I too assume that these files are still in Florida and that by tomorrow afternoon you could have these cases for me?" Ric asked hoping Steele could get what he needed.

"Yes, I guess you could assume that." Steele smirked.

"Good .. get them for me ASAP. I want to see them right away. And while you're at it, I want all the information you can get on this 15 year old murder case. Everything, from transcripts from the court files to witness statements to the evidence that was logged in. I want to know if Sonny Corinthos got a parking ticket in Florida during the time he was there!" Ric ordered.

"You got it. It might take a while for some of it but I can get it to you." Steele replied knowing his mission was a large one but it could be done.

"Good .. I expect full reports from you by tomorrow afternoon."
Steele nodded in acknowledgement of Ric's request and got up from his seat.

"Don't worry, we'll get him, sir." Steele added before he left Ric's office.

Ric felt a little better after his conversation with Detective Steele. One way or another he was determined to file charges against Sonny Corinthos that would stick. He could feel it inside him, it was going to happen very soon.

    Episode 2

    At the hospital ...

Ric's restful sleep was interrupted by Mario, Johnny and Ian, who had just been involved in a high speed car chase of someone they believed to be Lorenzo Alcazar. Frankie opened the door to Ric's room and the three men entered with heads hanging low, because they left Alcazar slip through their fingers.

By the look on their faces, Ric knew it wasn't good news. "Did you have a talk with Alcazar about his involvement in all this?" Ric asked as the three kept their distance from him.

"We didn't get a chance to, sir." Mario disappointed Lorenzo go away from them.

"Why? What happened?" Ric inquired as the three men looked at one another not wanting to be the one to explain.

"Two of his men kept us busy while he slipped out the back. We gave chase but he got away, sir."

"I see. I'm sure he has got my shipment in that warehouse! There is millions of dollars worth of product in that shipment and I want it back!" Ric ordered.

    "Yes, sir."

Ric dismissed the three men with their orders to steal back the shipment that Lorenzo had taken from him. His taking back what was his could very well instigate a war between he and Lorenzo but he had to take the risk. The shipment could not be replaced if lost, he had others waiting for it and without it, he wasn't going to collect what was owed to him.

    Later on that night ...

As Ric rested his weary body, another visitor stopped by. From his bed, he saw his father outside talking with Frank, and soon Trevor stepped into the room. Ric propped himself up without much difficulty or pain as his father approached his bedside.

"You're looking better..." his father began as he sat down on the swivel stool next to the bed.

"I'm not feeling better. Once I get my shipment back, I'm sure that will change."

"We're working on it. I just passed your men in the hallway, they explained what's been going on."

"I should of took Lorenzo out a long time ago. He's been a thorn in my side for a while now."

"We'll take care of Lorenzo, you just concentrate on getting better. Alexis and the children need you."

"You know how much I hate this, right? How can I possibly run this business from a hospital bed?"

"That is why I'm here. I'll help you till you're able to come back. Don't worry. It's all under control." Trevor tried to re-assure his son the business was in very capable hands, Ric was still worried about giving his father the keys to his kingdom.

"Uh huh, I've heard that before." Ric replied with a roll of his eyes.

"Hey, I provided good for you and your mother for a long time, Ric." Trevor became defensive.

"I know, but there were times that weren't so good. Times that I wish you had been there and weren't. Times we needed you and the business was more important than family."

Trevor looked down and away from Ric, knowing his son was right. There were times that Ric and his mother needed him and he was too busy with the business to care. Business came first, and he regrets missing important milestones in his son's life because of it. He tried to make it up to Ric, but at the time, Ric wanted no part of him or his love. It has taken a long time for he and Ric to get to the place they are now. Many conversations and long sleepless nights. But Ric found it in his heart to forgive and thankfully accepted him as a father again.

    The Courtroom --

Ric noticed that Zander and Emily were both missing from the courtroom still and leaned in to Alexis to ask if she had known where they had gone to. He became concerned about his brother and Emily as he was asked if he had anymore witnesses.

"If I may beg the court's indulgence, and ask for a short recess, my next witness has not arrived yet and I'm waiting to hear when that will be." Ric asked the judge for some extra time.

The judge looked down at his watch and noticed it was almost lunchtime. "We'll take a brief recess for lunch. Court will resume at 2pm." he ordered and struck his gavel down to close the morning session of the trial.

After the judge had left the courtroom, Alexis turned to Ric and asked who this witness was he was waiting for, she had read his witness list and she didn't see any witnesses that weren't in the courtroom that morning.

"I'm waiting for a phone call from one of my staff, he's suppose to be getting another witness here for me, but I'm not sure how it's going to turn out. If I can get the witness here, Sonny's for sure going to prison." he was being very cryptic with her.

"Care to tell me who this person is? You know surprise witnesses will call for an objection from Sonny's attorney." she reminded him of the legalities of it all.

"If it works out the way I hope it will .... the witness will be .. my mother." he replied and saw her eyes widen.

"You mean your's and Zander's mother?" she questioned shocked to hear that Zander's mother was alive. "I thought she had passed away a long time ago, Ric?"

"That's the catch, she's been in protective custody for the last 15 years, and I don't know if I have the clearance to get her in the courtroom to testify just yet." Ric replied and a shocked Alexis thought about what this was going to do to Zander.

"You know Zander has been told she died, have you even thought about your brother's reaction to this and that you knew about it and didn't tell him?!"

Ric hadn't realized what it would do to Zander to see his mother again, his focus had been all about this case against Sonny. He knew he had to find Zander and tell him about their mother, he deserved the truth, and it was time to tell his brother that their mother was alive.

Judge Cooper had accepted Ric's request of a private meeting in his chambers and asked Ric to meet 30 minutes before reconvening court. Ric still had to tell Zander about their mother, but he still hadn't had the phone call he had been waiting for, so he wanted to ask Judge Cooper for a continuance of at least 48 hours.

    At the hospital --

Ric had an hour before his meeting with Judge Cooper and had found Zander at the hospital getting his hand tended to by Bobbie. Zander saw Ric standing just beyond the curtain waiting for him and he noticed his brother looking worried about something, Zander had hoped it was nothing concerning the case. Bobbie finished up the last of the bandage on Zander's hand and left him get up off the gurney as she put away the supplies she used.

"You should clean that tomorrow and re-bandage it, I'll give Emily the supplies to take home." Bobbie explained and Zander nodded in acknowledgment before leaving the cubical to see his brother.

As he emerged from behind the curtain, Ric stepped forward and guided him the chairs to talk. Ric didn't know the best way to tell his brother about their mother, and he knew Zander would be furious with him for not telling him sooner.

"There is something you need to know, Zander." Ric said as he led him to the couch and sat him down.

"Okay, what's that?" an unexpecting Zander replied.

"There's something I need to tell you about our mother." Ric began.

"What's there to know, Ric? She died quite a few years ago .. end of story." Zander replied as he got up from his seat and Ric stopped him from going.

    "No, Zander she didn't."

If You See Him, If You See Her
by Brooks & Dunn with Reba McIntire

    If you see him
Tell him I wish him well
    How am I doing?
Well, sometimes is hard to tell
I still miss him more than ever
But please dont say a word
    If you see him
    If you see him

    If you see her
    Tell her I'm doing fine
    And if you want to
Say that I think of her from time to time
Ask her if she ever wonders
    Where we both went wrong
    If you see her
    If you see her

    I still want her
    I still need him so
I dont know why we let each other go

    If you see her
Tell her the lights still on for her
    Nothing's changed
Deep down the fire still burns for him

And even if it takes forever say I'll still be here
    If you see him
    If you see her
    If you see him
    If you see her

    Ric, Alexis, Sonny Ficlette

Alexis had rushed home from court just in enough time to get Kristina ready for her visit with Sonny. Viola had her all ready to go when Alexis hurried through the door. "Hi sweetums .." Alexis managed to let out as she tried to catch her breath. She dropped her briefcase on the desk then took Kristina in her arms. "Ready to go see Daddy Sonny ...." she said to the toddler as she stuffed her keys back into her purse that she still had draped over her shoulder. Alexis and Kristina headed out the door on their way to Greystone to see Sonny.

Max greeted them at the front gate and invited them in. "Sonny's expecting you .." he said as he opened the front door of the manor. Alexis stepped into the house and began to unzip Kristina's coat. She walked into the living room and found Sonny sitting behind his desk doing paperwork. He looked up when he heard Alexis enter the room.

"Hey ..." he said as he got from his chair.

"Hi .. I'm sorry we're late. I got held up in court." Alexis apologized.

"Nah, don't worry about it." Sonny said as he reached for Kristina.

"I'll pick her up tomorrow evening after work ..... "

"Okay ... we'll be here." Sonny replied as Alexis turned towards the door.

"Oh, by the way ... have you seen Ric lately?" she asked hoping Sonny had cause she hadn't.

"Not today, he stopped by yesterday though with some paperwork I had to sign. Why?" Sonny replied and questioned her wanting to know about Ric.

"Oh no reason...." Alexis said acting suspicious.

"I thought the two of you were still separated?"

"Yeah we are .. but I haven't seen or heard from him for a while, I just thought you had since he is your attorney." she replied trying very hard to cover up the real reason she wanted to know about Ric.

"Oh, yeah he stops by every day at least once ... do you want me to tell him you want to see him?"

"No ... I mean .. no that's okay. I'm sure we'll run into each other at the courthouse or something." she replied and Sonny noticing her mannerisms.

"Are you okay, Alexis ... I mean you and Ric ...?"

"Yeah we're fine ... well at least I'm fine ... but .. well I worry about him, ya know. Don't tell him I said that or anything."

Sonny chuckled at her reply. "Okay I won't ...."

"Okay ... I'll be back tomorrow ...." she replied and knelt down to give Kristina a goodbye kiss. "See you tomorrow sweetheart."

Alexis left the manor and headed home hoping Viola had a hot bath drawn for her with the scented bubbles she liked so much. After the day she had, she needed just to relax.

    =============================

Sonny went back to working on business as the kids played games upstairs in the game room, and he hadn't even got a chance to finish what he was doing before Ric walked into the living room. Sonny looked up and smiled.

    "Hi ..."

"Hi ..." Ric said as he heard the kids upstairs playing. "Kristina's here?" he asked.

"Yeah .. Alexis dropped her off about an hour ago." Sonny explained as he saw Ric's expression change like he was disappointed he had missed her.

"How is she? ... Alexis .. how is she?" Ric asked then cleared his throat as if it had dried up of moisture.

"She's fine .... why?" Sonny asked curiously.

"Oh no reason, I just wondered. We haven't talked in a while, that's all."

"Oh and if you're wondering, she'll be back tomorrow evening to pick up Kristina. In case you wanted to be here when she stops by." Sonny replied and a grin on his face.

"No that's okay, but could you tell her I still think about her .. you know in not a so subtle way. You're good at not being subtle." Ric grinned.

"Why don't you just do it yourself, Ric ... she is still your wife."

"Yeah I know but I don't want her to feel uncomfortable .... it's been awkward with us lately. It's probably better coming from you ... you know .. in conversation."

Sonny grinned and chuckled .. "Yeah .. okay .. I'll mention it tomorrow."

Ric looked down at his watch and noticed it was after 6 .... he still had to go back to the office for files he wanted to work on at home. "I gotta run ... don't forget to tell her .."

"I'll tell her ... in conversation." Sonny replied as he picked up some of the toys lying on the couch. "Um .. before you go ... it's okay if you want to go up and see Kristina for a bit."

Ric looked up towards the starts and didn't hesitate. "Thanks ...." he replied with a smile as he headed for the stairs.

Sonny just shook his head and smiled as Ric hurried up the staircase to the playroom.

    ==========================================

Max opened the door for Alexis as she arrived to pick up Kristina from her overnight visit with Sonny. "Thanks Max..." Alexis said as she stepped into the foyer. "He's in the living room with Kristina .." Max replied and led the way to the living room. Alexis walked in and saw Sonny and Kristina on the couch waiting for her. Sonny turned towards her when she came in and said hello.

"Hi ... right on time .." he said as she came upon him.

"Yep ... right on time .. Is she ready?" Alexis said as she seemed rushed to leave before she saw someone she wanted to but didn't.

"Yeah .. she's had dinner and she's all ready to go .. what's your hurry?" Sonny asked as he helped Kristina off the couch.

"Oh well .. it's getting late and Kristina still needs her bath ...and .." Alexis replied making excuses to run.

"Oh ... you seem like you can't wait to get out of here just in case you know who would show up ..." Sonny smiled coyly like he knew something he didn't want her to know.

"Yeah, well .... we gotta go ... and if you see him .. tell him ... I asked about him .." she stumbled over her words as her stomach was now tied in knots.

"You still love him don't you?" Sonny asked as Alexis and Kristina walked towards the door to leave.

"No .. well .. " she stammered as she turned around to face Sonny.

"He's still .... " Sonny began but was interrupted. ".. loves her .." Ric finished the thought as he walked up behind Alexis.

Alexis turned around, surprised to see Ric now standing before her ... "If you see him ... tell him I love him too..." Ric drew her into him and she wrapped her arms around him not wanting to ever let him go.

    DRIVE
    by Alan Jackson

It was painted red the stripe was white
It was eighteen feet from the bow to the stern light
Secondhand from a dealer in Atlanta
I rode up with daddy when he went there to get her
We put on a shine; put on a motor
Built out of love, made for the water
Ran it for years, 'til the transom got rotten
A piece of my childhood that will never be forgotten

It was just an old plywood boat
With a 75 Johnson with electric choke
A young boy two hands on the wheel
I can't replace the way it made me feel
And I would turn her sharp
And I would make her whine
He'd say "you can't beat the way an old wood boat rides"
Just a little lake across the Alabama line
But I was king of the ocean
    When daddy let me drive

Just an old half ton shortbed Ford
My uncle bought new in '64
Daddy got it right 'cause the engine was smoking
A couple of burnt valves and he had it going
He let me drive her when we'd haul off a load
Down a dirt strip where we'd dump trash off of Thigpen Road
I'd sit up in the seat and stretch my feet out to the pedals
Smiling like a hero that just received his medal

It was just an old hand-me-down Ford
With a three-speed on the column and a dent in the door
A young boy two hands on the wheel
I can't replace the way it made me feel
And I would press the clutch
And I would keep it right
And he'd say, "a little slower son you're doing just fine"
Just a dirt road with trash on each side
    But I was Mario Andretti
    When daddy let me drive

I'm grown up now three daughters of my own
I let them drive my old Jeep across the pasture at our home
Maybe one day they'll reach back in their file
And pull out the old memory
And think of me and smile and say

It was just an old worn out Jeep
Rusty old floorboard, hot on my feet
A young girl two hands on the wheel
I can't replace the way it made me feel
And he'd say, "turn it left and steer it right,
Straighten up girl, now you're doing just fine"
Just a little valley by the river where we'd ride
But I was high on a mountain
    When daddy let me drive

    When daddy let me drive

    Oh he let me drive

She's just an old plywood boat
With a 75 Johnson with electric choke

"Daddy, Daddy!" a 5 year old little girl called out as she saw her daddy pull the car into the driveway. Emily came to the window and stood behind Amelia as she stood on the sofa cushions peering out the window watching as Zander got out of the car. "Daddy's early today." Emily said as she went to the front door and opened it for him. Amelia jumped off the sofa and rushed to her daddy as he set down his briefcase by the door. "Hey there munchkin!" he replied as she grabbed onto his leg. "I missed you, daddy." she cooed as he picked her up in his arms. "I missed you too, peanut." he gave her a kiss on her cheek and twirled her around. Her giggles filled the house as Emily peered from the kitchen and smiled at what she saw. "Hey you two, dinner will be ready in about an hour." Zander set Amelia down as he removed his coat and then took her little hand. "Come with me sweetheart, daddy has something to show you." He and Amelia walked hand and hand out to the garage, as they passed through the kitchen, Emily wondered what he was up to now. She stirred the pot and turned down the heat so it wouldn't boil over. She took off her oven mitt and followed them out to the garage.

The fall leaves blew in the light breeze as Zander opened up the garage door. He helped Amelia down the two steps in to the double car garage. She stood there with her hands at her side, her foot twisted back and forth as she waited for her daddy to show her the surprise. Zander walked over to the corner of the garage and lifted the blanket off the bicycle he had hidden. As he removed the blanket, Amelia's face lit up. She raced to the bicycle with her eyes wide. "Is it mine Daddy?" she asked as Emily watched from afar. "It's all yours peanut." She hugged him with all her might. "Thank you daddy." she said as she tried to get on the smallest bicycle he had found.

"Whatcha got there?" Emily asked Amelia as she stepped out from the doorway. Zander smiled as he felt a warmth come over him. "It's a bicycle ... my daddy got it for me." Emily giggled. "Oh he did, did he? Don't you think that's a bit big for you, sweetheart?" Amelia glanced back at her mom and then tried again to get on her new bike. "I can ride it ... see?" she said as Zander helped her into the seat. Her feet barely touched the pedals but the smile that was on her face was enough for Zander. "How bout I help you with that?" Zander said as she tried to ride it by herself. "Okay daddy."

Zander held on to the back of the bike as Amelia pushed with her legs to make it go. "See daddy, I got it." she replied as she turned to drive the bicycle out the opened door. "I see, munchkin. I see." Emily stood back and watched Zander and Amelia go down the driveway with the bicycle. Amelia's laugh could be heard from inside the garage as Emily smiled warmly. She found complete happiness in that moment. "Oh, dinner!" She ran quick back into the kitchen to take the pot off the stove before it burned fast.

Zander was glad that the driveway was so long, Amelia would have them in Poughkeepsie before he'd know it. He pulled back on the bicycle to slow it down so they could turn around and head back to the house. "You can let go now, Daddy." she said as she made the turn. "I don't think quite yet, you're still getting the hang of this." he said as he saw she wobble with it. "I'm okay now Daddy. See?" she balanced out the bicycle and Zander let go ever so slowly. He kept his hands close to the bicycle in case she lost control, but she seemed to be doing fine.

As they reached the garage, Zander grabbed hold of the bicycle again to slow her down. "I can do it Daddy." she said as they entered the garage and she came to a stop. "See, told you." she remarked as he chuckled knowing she didn't do it all by herself, he helped a little. She hopped off the bicycle as Emily came back and stood in the doorway. "I did it Daddy!" she hugged him tightly. "Yes you did my little munchkin!" he exclaimed as he picked her up, the smile on her face made all the driving around to find the bicycle worth while.

    *****************************

"Don't forget, Amelia's birthday party is tonight, so be sure you're home early." Emily said as she talked to Zander on the telephone. "I know, I have one stop before I come home. I'll be there in time. Don't worry." he replied as Emily bit her bottom lip and held her hand against her stomach trying to comfort the anxiousness that dwelled within her. "Zander, this is Amelia's sixteenth birthday ... I want to be perfect." Zander sighed, he knew how much this party meant to Amelia and to Emily. "Sweetheart, it will be perfect. I promise." "Okay, I have to go, Alexis is knocking at our door." Emily said her goodbyes to her husband and went to the front door to invite Alexis in.

"You guys are early. I wasn't expecting the two of you till ..." Cameron and Alexis both kissed Emily on her cheek and stepped into the cottage. "Oh my! It's 5 o'clock! I am not at all ready!" Emily looked down at herself and noticed what she was wearing. "Alexander home yet?" Cameron asked as Emily started up the stairs. "No he's not, he should be here soon though!" she shouted as she reached the top of the stairs. Cameron and Alexis made themselves comfortable on the couch.

"Hey Grandpa!" Amelia rushed Cameron and gave him a big hug. She kissed him on the cheek and giggled. His beard tickled her since she was a little girl. "Hi sweetheart! Are you ready for your party tonight?" he asked as she squeezed herself between he and Alexis. "Hi Alexis" she said as she hugged her. She didn't dare call Alexis grandma, that was a no no. Even when Alexis and Cameron married a few years ago, she had always known Alexis as a big part of the family, but calling her grandma was out of the question. "I'm sorry, grandpa ... what did you ask?" Amelia asked again as she looked towards him. "I asked if you were ready for your big party tonight?" Amelia's face lit up. "Of course I am! It's not every day I turn sixteen!" Cameron reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a black velvet box. "I wanted to give you this before your guests arrived." Emily walked down the stairs slowly, it had been a while since she could wear heals and she tried to steady herself against the banister. "Oh grandpa!" Amelia threw her arms around Cameron. "I'm sure it's beautiful." she remarked before opening the box. "Well, open it." he said as she caressed the box in her hands. She lifted the lid on the box and peered in side. Emily approached to see the gift her daughter received from her Grandpa. Amelia's eyes widened as the bracelet glistened. "It was my mother's. I wanted you to have it." he replied as he noticed Amelia's eyes well up with tears. She sniffled back the tears as Emily placed her hands on Cameron's shoulders and gently squeezed to let him know she thought it was thoughtful of him to give such a gift. "I love it Grandpa! Thank you!" Amelia embraced Cameron once more before heading up stairs to get ready for her party.

Just then, Zander walked through the front door. "Am I late?" he said as he looked down at his watch. He stood in awe at the door as he noticed Emily standing in front of him. "You, look beautiful." he replied as he set down his briefcase, not letting his eyes off of her. Emily approached him and wrapped her arms around him. "Thank you. You have exactly a half hour before company starts to arrive." she giggled as he nuzzled her neck. "Before I go upstairs .. Is everything all set?" he asked hoping the present was delivered as promised. Emily pulled back "Yes, it's all ready to go." Zander waved a hello to his dad and Alexis who sat on the couch before he made his way up the stairs.

Guests started to arrive right on time. Zander came down stairs and Amelia followed in her brand new dress. Cameron noticed she wore the bracelet he had given her and a smile came to his face. The family gathered in the kitchen and waited for the guest of honor. Emily had the birthday cake displayed on the kitchen table, the candles were lit as the guests gathered round. They sang happy birthday to Amelia and she pulled back her brunette curls as she blew out the sixteen candles that were on the cake. Zander took hold of Amelia's arm and pulled her towards the garage. "Sweetheart, your mom and I have a surprise for you." he said as he reached for the door knob. She got excited at the thought, cause the last time she got a surprise in the garage it was a new bicycle, she was hoping for something a lot bigger this time. Zander placed his hands over Amelia's eyes as she stepped down into the garage, it was dark and smelled musty but she didn't care, she just wanted to see her surprise. Emily opened the garage door and turned on the light. The guests awed as they saw the gift before the birthday girl did. She knew by the sounds behind her, it was something really good. She began to get anxious as Zander walked his daughter over to her surprise gift. Cameron pulled the blanket from the present and revealed to her a brand new convertible. Amelia jumped into her father's arms filled with happiness and enthusiasm. "Thank you, thank you, thank you, Daddy!" No matter how old she got, he loved to hear the word "daddy" and he loved to see her smile. She climbed into the drivers seat and closed the door. She explored every inch of the car before asking for the keys.

Zander dangled them in front of her ..."I will give you these, only if I'm the first one to take it for a spin with you." She jumped up and down in the seat anxious to get her hands on the keys. "Yes! Get in!" she took the keys from Zander and stuck them into the ignition. Her guests stood back as she started up the car. It was a little too cool for the top down, but neither cared. His daughter turned sixteen today, and she was happy. He didn't care about much else in that moment, Amelia was all that mattered.

She slowly drove it down the driveway, being very careful. Zander sat in the passenger seat watching every move she made, making sure she looked in her mirrors, watching her speed, and being sure she stayed towards the center of the drive. "You seem to have the hang of this." he remarked as they made their way down to the end of the drive. "I do Daddy .. I really do." She slowed down the car so she could turn it around. "Now remember to look both ways and remember to always use the mirrors ...." Amelia made the turn and headed back towards the house. "I know Daddy. Don't worry, I can do this .. I'm not a little girl anymore." Zander looked at his daughter and in that moment, realized she had grown up before his eyes.

    ********************************

"Are you ready, sweetheart?" Zander asked as he took his daughter by the arm. "I'm as ready as I'm ever gonna be I guess." she smiled at him with a tear in her eye. "Before we do this, I wanted to tell you something." Amelia looked into her father's eyes, the love he had for her was apparent and brought more tears. He wiped away the tears with his thumb and caressed her cheek. "Your mother and I love you so much, and we have always wanted you to be happy, above anything else." Amelia sniffled back and bit her bottom lip. Zander smiled as he noticed her do the one of the things she got from her mother, it always reminded him of her. "I love you too, Daddy." she smiled. She was practically glowing and it warmed his heart to know she found someone to spend the rest of her life with, someone that made her happy, someone she could share her dreams with, someone who would believe in her and someone who loved her the way she should be loved. He embraced her lovingly as the music began to play. That was their cue. He took her arm in his and began to stroll down the aisle. He was so proud of her, she was his little girl, and now she was all grown up.

They reached the alter, she kissed him on the cheek as the tears began to fall again. He took his daughter's hand and gave it to the man who was about to promise her his life. Zander turned and sat down in the first pew with Emily. She took his hand in hers and squeezed it gently. "She's going to be just fine, sweetheart. Don't worry, she's not a little girl anymore." her words rang through his mind as he remembered all the other times he had heard them before. "I know, but she'll always be mine."

    At the ER ---

Alexis and Ric raced through the emergency room doors looking for anyone who could tell them about Zander and his condition. They were immediately met by Bobbie, who had just gotten the page that there had been a shooting.

"Bobbie! How is he?" Alexis asked as she tried to pull herself together.

"How's who?" Bobbie asked as she was in a hurry to get to the patient the paramedics had brought in.

"Zander, he was just brought in with a .... gun shot wound ..." Alexis replied as Bobbie was headed back to the triage area of the ER.

"Gimme a few minutes ... " Bobbie replied and left Alexis with Ric in the waiting area of the ER.

Alexis turned into Ric's arms. "He's going to be alright?" she asked looking for reassurance from Ric.

"Zander's in very capable hands, Alexis. He's gonna be alright."

"Emily ...." Alexis pulled back from Ric's arms.

"I'm sure someone will tell her ...." he replied as he wrapped his arm around Alexis and led her to a chair to sit down.

"It shouldn't just be someone, Ric ... she shouldn't hear this on the evening news or from some duty nurse."

"Let's wait and see what Bobbie has to tell us and then we'll figure it out. Okay?" Ric tried consoling Alexis the best he could, but he was worried about his brother as well.

As they sat waiting for word on Zander's condition, two police officers walked into the ER looking for Alexis. The two burly officers were looking for some answers to tonight's shooting. But to their surprise, Ric wasn't having any of it. Alexis had been through enough and she wasn't in any condition to be bombarded with questions from two rookie cops.

The two rookies started giving Ric a hard time.

"Look, my brother is in there fighting for his life, and you want to ask questions?!" Ric barked at the two rookies.

"But ... you're .." the one rookie stammered.

"Yeah I know who I am, now leave before I have both your badges!" Ric threatened to the two rookies.

The rookies turned to walk away when Bobbie approached Ric and Alexis who were waiting in the lounge area. Alexis noticed Bobbie approaching and got up quickly, hoping there had been some news.

"Well, how is he?" Alexis rushed to Bobbie concerned about Zander.

"He's being prepped for surgery, the doctors are not sure on his prognosis. Alexis, he's in very capable hands. I'll be back when he's out of surgery."

Ric steady Alexis from behind as he wrapped his arms around her. "There has to be more you can tell us, Bobbie?"

"I'm sorry, Alexis, there isn't. We're just not sure where the bullets are lodged until we get in there. I'm telling you all I know right now."

    "Bullets?"

"Yes, bullets. Zander took a few hits, but we're doing everything we can to save him. I'm sorry I don't have more info for you." Bobbie left Alexis with Ric, both frantic with concern.

Alexis turned into Ric's arms as tears began to stream down her cheeks, obviously upset as Ric held her against him and comforted her the best he could.

"Zander's strong, he'll get through this Alexis." Ric replied in a soothing voice.

She pulled back from his arms and dried her tears with her hand. "You know as well as I do, Ric, we don't know that for sure. Ric, he could die! I couldn't handle that, Ric!"

"I know, so we have to be strong for him, and stay positive, we can't give up on him. You know Zander, he's stubborn, he's not going to give up, he has too much to live for, Alexis."

Ric held her in his arms for a few more moments, then he realized he should be making a few phone calls to family, his mom should know and someone should be with Emily.

"Are you going to be alright, I should call our mother and tell her. She shouldn't hear this on the tv news or the radio."

Alexis nodded that she would be alright .."What about Emily, we need to tell her."

"We will, we'll got together and tell her, she'll need both of us there for support." Ric smiled and then left for a few minutes to call his mother.

Ric returned and he along with Alexis walked somberly to tell Emily what had happened. When they reached Emily's room, Ric entered, Alexis followed close behind. Ric closed the door, Alexis stood in silence as she focused her eyes on the floor. Emily felt there was something wrong just by Ric and Alexis's lack of words to her. She saw it in their faces that something bad had happened to her husband and as Ric steadied her for the news, Alexis held onto her hand.

Emily's cries echoed thru the empty corridors of the hospital as Ric and Alexis broke the news to her. Alexis sat with Emily while Ric went to meet his mother who was to arrive at the hospital. While Ric was gone, Emily and Alexis comforted each other, both were worried and afraid for Zander who was still in surgery.

    EPISODE 38

    Outside Emily's hospital room --

"I'm doing everything I can to keep him stabilized. I'm not going to lie to you Zander .... the baby, at this point is my main concern." she replied and Zander began to panic and fear the worst.

"Look, I have him on monitors and I'm trying to stabilize him, and once we do that, he should be okay. The next few hours will tell us what we have to do next."

"You won't have to take him will you? I mean it's too early, isn't it?"

"Well, Emily's 7 months along, the baby is growing nicely but there are risks to having him born early, with any pregnancy. In this situation, Emily's unstable, her blood pressure is up most of the time, and that's not good for either of them. There's entirely too much stress and strain on the baby right now to induce labor, we'll have to wait and see."

The family gathered around Zander, his mother comforting him as they listened to Dr. Meadows prognosis. "The best thing right now for Emily is rest, absolutely no stress, and no excitement. I gave her something that will help her sleep, so she should be resting for a while." Dr. Meadows added.

"Can we sit with her?" Monica asked concerned herself about her daughter and unborn grandchild.

"Yeah sure, but let's keep the visitors to a minimum." Dr. Meadows replied.

"Will you sit with her, mom. I'll be right there." Zander asked of his mother as he glanced over to Frank and Jerry, who were still waiting in the lounge area across from Emily's room.

Elenore agreed and went to Emily's bedside as her son asked her to. Ric followed Zander over to his men, while Monica and Alan stood in the doorway of their daughters room, comforting each other, still worried and afraid for her and the baby.

Zander stood in the doorway of Emily's room, his fists clenched in an overload of emotions. He realized that someone tried to take it all away from him today, his wife, his child, his business, his entire world. He stormed out of the room, anger filled his eyes, his insides twisted, and he had only one thing on his mind .... it was time for payback!

Zander headed on a path sure to lead to danger for him and he was in no condition to be out taking care of business. Especially Jason Morgan. Frank stepped in front of Zander and stopped him from leaving.

"You're not going out there by yourself, are you? Zander, you're in no condition to be going after Morgan." Frank gave his boss his own 2 cents.

"I agree with him, Zander ... let someone else handle this?" Ric stepped forward.

"Thank you for your concern, but I have to do this now. Morgan's gotten away with this for far too long." Zander replied as he tried to get passed Frank.

"At least take one of us with you. Two are better then one, when handling Morgan." Cord spoke up.

"I have to do this alone, but thanks for the offer."

Zander shot Frank a look to let him pass, and Frank stepped aside. Zander turned around towards his men. "The two of you stay here and keep watch on Emily. Got that?!"

"Sir I still think you should take someone with you!" Cord said, it fell on deaf ears. Zander needed to this alone and he refused help from his men who were left standing in the corridor outside Emily's room.

"I happen to agree with the two of you. Why don't you guys follow him and I'll watch Emily till he gets back?" Ric offered.

"We can't do that .... Zander wants us to stay here. He wouldn't like it if we ignored his orders." Frank replied as the three of them stood outside Emily's room.

"I know, but we can't let him walk into this with Morgan alone .... he's in no shape to fight Morgan by himself. He's going to get himself killed!"

Cord and Frank stood for a few minutes contemplating what to do. What Ric said was true, Zander was not capable of taking out Morgan by himself, certainly not now. But there would be hell to pay if Zander knew they disobeyed orders.

Zander walked out of the front entrance of the hospital and flipped his cell phone open to make a call. "Marcus, pick me up in front of the hospital, I have some business to attend to." In a few minutes Marcus pulled the car up in front of the hospital and Zander climbed in the back seat.

"Where to boss?" Marcus asked, the tinted divider down between he and Zander.

    "The penthouse."
