EastEnders: Discussion Thread
Tuesday's episode: UGH! It's like they put everything WRONG with this show into one episode. Honestly, who the hell cares about Billie and him joining the army? Zainab as a nosy bitch is getting old. Should I care who sent that mysterious chocolate rabbit to Zsa Zsa? I bet it was Ben. And how DARE Carol sass Dot! Amira and Syed look like brother and sister. Their resemblance is uncanny. LOL!

Coronation Street: Discussion Thread
It's pretty funny that Corrie talent is being spread elsewhere at the moment, just not at Corrie. Bryan Kirkwood, who spent a decade in various positions at Corrie, namely as a storyliner, is at EastEnders presently. His appointment at EastEnders was shocking, because as UK LAW once said, if there was any show he was destined to run, it was Corrie. Gavin Blyth, who also developed his skills at Corrie and spent a good number of years there, is now running things at Emmerdale. Paul Marquesses's first big job was as a story editor at Corrie, and he's now at Hollyoaks. I'm hoping when Phil Collinson arrives as Series Producer, he'll be able to whip Corrie back into shape.

Coronation Street: Discussion Thread
My problem with Corrie is how boring and aimless the show is. I'm not really interested in anything, nothing is grabbing my attention right now. The show is just so snooze-worthy. Hopefully, it can turnaround when the new Producer gets there.

I believe this is Bryan Kirkwood's Facebook, as he was listed as a friend of Sharon's, amongst many others from EastEnders. I also know he's openly spoken out about how much he enjoyed the ridiculousness and camp of Dynasty. http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=666610218#!/profile.php?ref=sgm&id=659607340

Bringing it back to the writer's discussion. Here's what Kirkwood said in 2007 at Hollyoaks. Though, of course, he probably won't have the leeway at EastEnders that he had there, and EastEnders isn't perceived as a show in trouble creatively or ratings-wise. http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2007/may/21/mondaymediasection4

EastEnders: Discussion Thread
I think Shirley feels guilty over abandoning her own children, hence why she's taking caring of Zsa Zsa and wants Phil to be with Louise so badly. She's said as much to Ben during one of her conversations with Ben last last week. I don't know why she's laying it on this thick though. They have to explain the Lisa issue of this story better. No way in hell do I believe she would abandon her child like that. It doesn't add up. Unless Lisa's dead and someone filled lies about her to Louise before dumping her on the streets. Danny needs to die. He has some serious nerve being so smug to Janine. I love when she retorted about what scheme he's involved with, because she can tell something is up with him. I want Ronnie to kick his ass and tell everyone in the Michell family, "I told ya so!" when the truth comes out. Was it aluminum foil? I thought it was plastic. The constant food stuff with Heather and the hitting us over the head with what a fat ass she is, is not amusing. I don't understand why they're doing it. I quite like Ryan's ass. I think Janine might find out Stacey's baby is Ryan's and will probably do something rash, or keep the information from him. Do you see how exhausted Lacey Turner looks these days? I know Stacey is supposed to look this way, but I think Lacey is over-worked.

Also, looks like Louise is going to be a scathing mini-bitch. Her line to Ben about Shirley - "She's useless, how can we get rid of her?" If it weren't for Shirley, her ass would still be in foster care.

EastEnders: Discussion Thread
Monday's episode: LOL! at Ben microwaving Danny's little kiss-ass gift to Louise on her homecoming. I felt sorry for him after the cake fiasco though. I know many are annoyed by Ben, but I love his obviously flaming tendencies. Stacey just needs to tell Ryan he's the father of her child already. I don't know how much longer they'll drag this out. I know Stacey is supposed to look a bit horrible and depressed, but I think this show is over-working Lacey Turner a bit too much. Look at the bags under her eyes, that's not a makeup job, it looks like Lacey is stressed and needs a vacation! Lacey is a brilliant actress, and I can't fault them for wanting to utilize that, but the girl needs time to re-juice! I think Janine smells what a rat Danny is. I hope she's somehow apart of it when he's exposed. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED Max and Bianca being hostile and fed up with Billie at the hospital. Also, who cares that he wants to enlist in the army? Can he be drafted and die in war, please?

Apparently, Steve McFadden will be on a "special leave" towards the end of the year. http://www.digitalspy.com/soaps/s2/eastenders/news/a212545/mcfadden-given-special-leave-from-enders.html McFadden 'given special leave' from 'Enders Monday, April 5 2010, 7:05am EDT By Paul Millar, McFadden 'given special leave' from 'Enders Steve McFadden has been given special leave from EastEnders, reports claim. According to The Sun, the actor - who plays Phil Mitchell in the soap - has agreed to appear in a pantomime over the Christmas period. The 51-year-old will reportedly take a six-week break for his forthcoming appearance as Captain Hook, for which he will earn £160,000. "The festive season is a massive time for soaps - and the Christmas Day and New Year's Day episodes are the biggest event of the soap year," an insider told The Sun. "But bosses are desperate to keep Steve on side as he will be the last senior Mitchell left, with Peggy doing a disappearing act." McFadden considered quitting the show earlier this year after on-screen mother Barbara Windsor announced her departure.

I was happy ton see Janine return, even though her stories weren't good, and I'm looking forward to Kat and Alfie's return, though more so for Kat. I agree with David Wicks. I also agree with Lisa. No way do I see her abandoning Louise like that. It doesn't make sense. The PBS affiliate here is airing episodes from the HORRIBLE Louise Berridge era. Remember that AWFUL Vicky recast that suddenly dropped her American accent? If Sharon ever comes back from America with her son and if Vicky ever returns, hopefully they can hire actors who can master a decent American accent. There's plenty of American actors involved in London's arts scene, if they choose to employ British actors, they better audition them properly.

Though I'm not watching currently, I cannot wait until Calvin dies and his last scenes air. I'll check the show out again once Paul Marquess is credited, but I don't know if I'll be able to commit again. I feel like my habit for this show is broken.

Emmerdale: Discussion Thread
The plane crash episode remains Emmerdale's highest rated episode and supposedly gave the show more mainstream recognition. Though, Emmerdale has never gotten the attention that Corrie and EastEnders get, even though it's the third highest rated soap in the UK. There also appears to be a stigma attached to the show. Even though all soaps have tried it, Emmerdale has a tendency to be stigmatized for being too sensationalistic and putting glitz before story. Though, in recent years, all soaps have suffered from this.

Something about Samantha Womack reminds me of Michelle Phifer. I like that. Womack is so underrated and Ronnie has so much potential that they aren't tapping into.

EastEnders: Discussion Thread
The first two years or so of Kirkwood's Hollyoaks were decently paced, I thought. But, of course, a lot of EasttEnders current story problems come from Dominic Treadwell Collins, who Santer and Yorke had no problem giving all the credit to. I don't think Kirkwood will be getting rid of him, at least not anytime soon, after all the praise Collins has at times undeservedly gotten. I don't think they were ever going to keep those big viewing figures from the live episode. In the past when one-off episodes have gotten huge figures, the show has always gone back almost immediately to being where it was before in the ratings. But I'm not sure if we'll be seeing any changes on the show, since EastEnders isn't thought to be bad right now, for some strange reason. There's stuff with potential, of course, but the execution needs A LOT of work on this show.

EastEnders: Discussion Thread
I wonder if the pacing issues will change though. As I said before, ratings are still generally strong and John Yorke and BBC One seem to be under the impression that EastEnders doesn't need any fixing. In fact, EastEnders has been beating Corrie with more regularity in the ratings in recent times. Not that I can blame people for turning off Corrie. EastEnders at least still has some potential, I find Corrie completely boring and flat, which is sad, since it was my first British soap. Though, I do think Corrie is slightly ahead overall in the ratings. I guess time will tell if the Kirkwood era ushers in any changes in the way stories are told on EastEnders.

And of course, Paul Marquess stole Claire Fryer, who is/was EastEnders Series Story Editor along with Alexander Lamb. You have to wonder if a replacement will be made for her, or if Lamb will stay on as the sole Series Story Editor.

Collins is a special case, having been there just before Santer joined, and then he of course rose to fame under Santer's reign. At this point, if Kirkwood wants to fire him, I have to wonder if he'll be allowed to. But I do think Collins has worn out his welcome at this point...
