At the end of today's episode, I noticed Jennifer Gareis was missing from the main cast credits.

Accidental omission, or has she been dropped from full contract? 😿

I've always had a weak spot for her but she hasn't had a real story since... 2010? I was very surprised when they brought her back on contract in 2018 and they didn't even give her anything to do.

  2. I don't mean to be rude but she's an absolutele terrible actress and I have no idea how she even landed a role on B&B, let alone go on to something "bigger".

Good for her though! Inevitably Bell would've gotten bored of the black storyline and dropped them off anyway. Better to get off before it goes down.

    Some choices from Goutman's ATWT:

I actually thought that Terri Conn's Katie was great, and she was one of the main reasons I tuned in. Aside from that final pairing with Daniel Cosgrove's Chris, she had great romantic chemistry with her various love interests and good (gay) friend chemistry with Henry and Reid.

Definitely agree with this. I started watching for Katie and Simon, but I think she also had great chemistry with the actors that played Henry, Brad and Mike (as boring and plain as Mike's character was in hindsight).

I don't know if she was particularly unpopular - but I was a huuuuuuge fan of Jade (Elena Goode). The actress wasn't the best but I loved Jade's scheming ways. Maybe it helped that I never really cared for Will and Gwen as a couple.

And one that was wildly unpopular - Julia Larrabee as portrayed by Sarah Brown. I must admit it was 100% Sarah Brown's acting that sold me on the character - as Julia was admittedly not very likeable - but Brown just hit all the right notes with me.

  4. I watched a few minutes of an episode this week and the guy who plays Zende is absolutely terrible. He sounds like he is reading it from the script. I get they want to hire beautiful people but there must be handsome people out there who also have talent? And he is way too light-skinned to play Zende... I know Rome Flynn was too but they took it even further with this dude.

(But I did read he is half-Dutch so that redeems him a bit in my eyes nn).

  5. I ''accidentally'' stumbled upon B&B on Dutch TV earlier today and we're not very far behind from the US anymore. Finn is already on the Dutch screens. Not sure where we are in detail but Liam/Hope and Steffy were debating their situation and Finn and Thomas talked about Hope and Steffy at FC. (This probably does not narrow anything down at all knowing B&B cycles through the same thing every week).

We used to be 2/3 years behind but at some point in time they decided to air 2 episodes per day (probably stopped doing that now) and I'm sure corona helped catching up as well.

The way Paris is mooning over Zende’s looks, you’d think Rome Flynn was still playing the role...

If only! I wouldn't mind having a Rome Flynn doll in my home à la that creepy doll Thomas has of Hope.

  6. What a random return. Why Julius? There aren't even any family members of his on-screen (that I can think of).

I don't remember the Sasha actress to be particularly good. Reign Edwards on the other hands was a true gift to the show and deserved so much more than she ever got.

I do agree with the sentiments I read on here (or elsewhere, not sure) that Zoe should've been Sasha coming back. But I guess the story with Wayne Brady couldn't have been played out that way (at least not as Sasha's bio dad). Actually Xander could've been a recast Zende as well and the characters would've tied into B&B's recent history much better. But I guess that doesn't really matter as Xander got wiped out pretty quickly and Zende is actually back now.

Looking back, as little story as they had, the Avants were actually great additions to the cast (+ Zende) that should've been used way more.

  7. ATWT - from 2000 until 2010 (actually 2002-2012 because the Netherlands was 2 years behind). My #1 soap opera even though it got progressively worse throughout the years. You always have that special place for the characters you grew up with.

OLTL - from late 2010 until late 2011. I thought it was pretty good but it had its lesser moments too. Lost interest after it was announced it would be cancelled. (Never aired here in the Netherlands but I watched on YT).

B&B - I watched briefly when I was switching through channels and saw Oliver Jones (early 2010, but again it aired much later in the Netherlands). I was INFATUATED with him. The storyline where Brooke accidentally f****d him was hilarious. I watched regularly until about 2016 or 2017 when I got fed up with Bell's choices.

Just a thought, but I've always coughed up Brad Bell's lack of progressive creativity and misogynistic writing due to the fact he's also writing for international audiences in countries unfortunately aren't nearly as progressive as North America and he doesn't want to do anything to alienate that audience because face it, without them, B&B wouldn't really have any legs to stand on.

I don't think that's it. Most countries it airs in are just as progressive as/more progressive than the USA. I think it's because Brad Bell is just not very progressive himself and he doesn't really care about pushing the boundaries.

  9. I started watching ATWT in 2002 with my grandparents, but because The Netherlands was about +/- two years behind the USA these were the episodes that aired in the USA in 2000. I lost a bit of interest in ATWT around 2005 but never completely stopped watching, although progressively watched less until the very end. I never actually saw the last episode.

Then I watched OLTL for about a year but stopped before the final episode aired. I watched B&B for a few years after that, off & on, but now haven't really been a soap watcher for about 3 years.

I like to keep reading about firings/hirings and what's happening on what soap opera but it's never interesting enough to pull me (back) in.

  10. After reading some comments here I might actually watch this Locher Room session. I didn't realize JP's hands were so tied by higher ups. You can blame her for listening to them but at the end of the day she probably just wanted to keep her job, and why wouldn't she. I thought quite some storyline ideas from her tenure were actually not bad, just not well executed or too fast-paced. Lucinda marrying Brian who was secretly gay should've been a large storyline spanning a much longer period of time. Hunter being Emily's son from an unused egg had great potential. I can't think of any others from the top of my head so maybe there are not that many after all 😄.

Agreed with nearly all of those points. I thought the show really went downhill after Sheffer left in early 2005. Every time I tried to turn in during that period, I kept seeing mind-numbingly dull Paul-Meg-Dusty storylines, or not-so-interesting drama surrounding Carly's insta-sister Gwen, or CarJack stuck in the same never-ending cycle of break-ups and make-ups.

The period you mention around late 2009 was MUCH better, and significantly, that's when David Kreizman joined as co-head writer. I know that a lot of SON regulars like to blame Kreizman for GL's problems in later years, but I think he's very good at developing character-driven storylines. And developing characters generally: I'd be surprised if Reid wasn't a Kreizman creation.

I had no idea there actually as a co-headwriter from that moment on. That might definitely explain the positive changes I started to see.

@Markjeh I loved Jade too! Elena Goode I think was the first Jade. The only problem I had was not doing more with her. She was great!

Also I know it’s unpopular, but I loved Hunt Block as Craig. He was my original Craig and why I started watching because I liked him on Knots Landing. When I saw her was on ATWT I started watching. Previously I only watched Y&R. I do love Scott Bryce though and was so disappointed with his return and firing. I’m glad Dansby mentioned how poor the writing was for his return.

Yeah, they never really developed Jade beyond being obsessed with Will and Gwen. A shame considering her being Rose's daughter gave her quite some connections.

I remember Hunt Block being ridiculously popular on Dutch message boards, and to be honest I can see why (but ATWT started airing here in 1990 so I'm pretty sure the Dutch people never knew the original Craig, or only briefly). .

It’s like y’all just watched a completely different show. I just can’t relate. I wish I could find a place where people loved As The World Turns. People here hate the Snyder family, they hate Martha Byrne’s Lily, Katie, Carly, Jack, the men under Marland’s tenure, NO head writer it seems, or any period of the show except the 60s and 70s (which are unavailable for viewing so they’re only memories so old that the memories of what the show was back then aren’t real) or it seems any storyline that didn’t involve Kim, Bob, John or Lucinda. So weird. Sometimes, I wonder: what do you people LIKE about the show??? Don’t bother answering. I’ve learned my lesson. Stay away from the toxic boards at Soap Opera Network.

Don't let the negatives get to you. I really enjoyed the show from 2000 until say 2004, but admittedly that's when I started watching and I think everyone has a special place in their heart for the characters that were on during the time they started watching. Sometimes I watch old episodes mainly from 2000-2002 and I think they still hold up pretty well.

  11. I thought JP's work on ATWT was overall really bad. 2005 was just a horrible year imo and I only found out later that's when she started. The organ story with Keith and Lily was terrible. Carly having a never-seen before sister in Gwen was so random and not convincing. The BJ Green story was terrible. A very lackluster year.

Early 2006 was pretty good with the big Emily story and Luke's coming out. Probably very unpopular opinion but I was a huge Jade fan. But the real ''gem''' of her reign was Fall/Winter 2009. The pacing was right and the storylines were interesting to me. Emily's egg being used and Hunter being her son was cool (why drop him?), Meg going crazy was the most interesting she had been, Henry being James' son was too contrived but the story surrounding it was nice (I'll never forget the car-window scene with Barbara and Emily), and of course Brad's death was,  I have to admit, pretty well written.
