When Tom Eplin got shifted over to ATWT, he quickly took the place of Tom Wiggin's Kirk as Lucinda's sounding board/go to executive. Kirk was probably already on borrowed time, but it still rankled.

Wasn't Kirk already off? He and Samantha disappeared in August 1998 and Jake didn't appear in Oakdale until mid 1999.

But I understand your point. ATWT took in a few AW stars for a couple years there with storylines that ended up displeasing both ATWT and AW fans.

I thought Jake's crossover and romance with Molly was pretty well received? The others were just occasional guest stints that didn't really matter much I think.

I remember my grandmother (who got me into ATWT and sadly passed away a few weeks ago) being in shock and disbelief when Jake McKinnon was killed off on As the World Turns. It's of the few memories I actually have of watching the show with her. Of course that's just a sample of 1 person...

Just one more example of soap writers not talented enough to write for a good girl, because the bad girl is "just so much more exciting" (and easier to write for).  Then they make the good girl go crazy, to force the audience to root for the bad girl.   Suddenly the roles have been reversed -- the good girl is now the trouble maker, and the bad girl gets the man.   Jeeze-Louise, I get so sick of this, and variations on this situation.

I realize these "good girl goes crazy" plots are often popular with the audience, but it still shows a lack of writing talent and it's a hail-Mary pass when the writers don't know what to do with the good girl.   Let's just make her crazy and write her off the show.

In ATWTs defense, I am watching episodes from early 1999 right now and I am recognizing a lot of "crazy Julia" already  when she was hooked on those pills and being haunted by David and taunted by Carly.

Julia's descend into madness was honestly amazing TV to watch back in the day but they did take it too far. But again in ATWTs defense, surely they wouldn't have taken it all the way if Annie Parisse didn't bolt out the door (at least I hope so).

I do hate how Carly always seemed to come out ahead at the end of the day (no matter who Jack was with). Sorry, but I've just never been a fan of the character. Maura West was and I'm sure still is an amazing actress but Carly was not a character I thought deserved to get what she wanted.

  4. I'm watching some old episodes again (1999 this time) and I'm obsessed with Peter Parros. I never realized he was on ATWT for so long (9 years!). TPTB really did him so dirty. I know his character is Mr. goody two-shoes but you need to have those too... And don't get me started on his body yet they never really bothered to show it off... A crime!

  5. In the Netherlands B&B airs every week day. Back in its very popular days we were 2/3 years behind and it averaged around 900.000 viewers each day (on a population which was then about 16 million). In 2006 it moved from one network to another, got a different timeslot and lost a lot of its popularity (surely also to do with the fact that its hayday was over by then) dropping to around 500.000 viewers daily at most. It moved again to another channel around the early '10s.

A few years ago they started airing 2 episodes a day to catch up (back to 1 episode a day now) and for about a year now we are almost completely up to date with the US episodes, to the point where sometimes they have to air repeats because here there are no pre-emptions.

I just checked and last week the average viewer count was around 150.000 viewers.

Another fun fact is that they have a what I would call a nostalgia channel here which airs classic B&B episodes in chronological order. I watched one a while ago and after some deducing I'm sure it was an episode from 1993.

That's more than was asked for but there you go.
