  1. That shows a lot of class. On today's GH, they would have said Holly and Luke had an affair and sent dirty photos to Robert and Laura to prove it.

Did you feel that Kenney weakened the female characters? There was a letter in SOD at the time complaining about that.

Probably not to me at the time - especially when you compare them to today's females. I just remember sheer boredom. Boredom and Wes Kenney go hand in hand to me.

  2. Thanks for replying. Do you know who he wrote out? I know Brian and Claudia were phased out but don't know about anyone else. Who did he bring in?

I'm not sure. I just remember that someone was driving a SAAB and they killed Tanya. They were going over every little detail about the make of the car and I remember thinking to myself "this is so boring!" Frisco & Felicia became a little bit too domesticated as well. And the show focused on Tom Hardy a little too much. GH became boring and dull.

However, on a good note, I do remember Tristan Rogers came back to GH during Kenney's reign. When Robert first appeared in P.C, the writers made it seem like Holly (who they killed off-screen) had an affair on Robert. The fans were furious and wrote to GH with their displeasure. Kenney then later had a letter from Holly arrive to Robert declaring her love, etc. I will always respect him for that. He listened to the fans and tried to correct his mistakes - unlike the current regime. mad.gif

  3. Wes Kenney and GH didn't mix too well. I distinctly remember being bored for the very first time watching GH under his reign. It was too slow and he focused on the wrong things. To his credit, when something was going wrong, he tried to fix it. But I really missed Gloria Monty. Then again, I'd take Wes Kenney as EP in a heartbeat over Jill "the soap killer" Phelps.

  4. Who is considered the most responsible for GH being knocked out of the #1 spot? (And how much were the then heads of ABC Daytime to blame?) Becuase back in the early-80's heyday, it appeared as if GH would be #1 for at least twenty years (as was the case for ATWT and Y&R).

Not sure. Gloria Monty left in 1987 and GH fell to the #2 spot for the year. I'm not sure if GM was still there when GH fell to #2 though. I would think the head of ABC Daytime would be to blame. And then GH floundered for a long time until Wendy Riche took over as E.P. in 1992.

  5. Once Robert and Anna left it stopped being the real GH. I dropped it for a time when Mac was front burner because he was just so deadly dull (and still is). I think it was Marco Dane that brought me back to GH because I was so curious to see this old character on a new soap, but the other stuff from that time did nothing for me. And the stuff with drug addict Tiffany was just horrendous. Whoever wrote that garbage needed to have their union card rescinded.

I'm not sure. There were real problems before Robert and Anna left GH. While I absolutely love Robert and Anna individually, I didn't really like them as a couple. The stories at the time were all over the place and didn't have continuity. Monty was having a tough time restructuring GH. I wish ABC would have given her more time. I think eventually she would have figured it out and then we could have gotten back to real GH. Not that I didn't like Wendy Riche's GH, but when I see how long ABC has let Jill Faren Phelps run GH into the ground (over a decade!), I wish ABC would have given Monty more time on her second stint.

  6. I still do not understand why Alan is gone but Edward is around. Was it a money issue?

I honestly think it was so Jason could experience his "box of pain". Losing his father, rather than his grandfather, would have caused more pain. From everything I've read, SD was the nicest man and never complained. They should have asked him to go on recurring. It was just wrong to kill of Alan Q. I cried when they killed him off and I didn't even watch the episode. I just knew "My GH" had died. sad.png

  7. I guess I never thought of Monica and Alan as a tentpole couple but I did view Alan as a tentpole character. I think they honestly could have killed off MOnica with no issue with the audience. But Alan had something Monica's character did not have and i love LC that's heart. It wasn't the great writing for Alan it was Stuart Damon's presence and take on the character because Rick Webber who was supposed to I know be the resident good guy, I never gave a crap about. I thought the actor and character were very boring and bland. I never understood the appeal of Monica and Rick ever. I mean Stuart Damon played Prince Charming for gods sake. But I think Alan's death combined with Emily's and the writing off of the rest of the Q's just killed this show in many ways. And no I don't think birining back Skye and having scheming and catfights with Tracy is the way to rejunenate the family. Lila and Emily to a lessor degree and even Alan is what centered the family to a great extent. I don't view JI's Edward any more than a cartoon anymore. I need to find some scenes with David Lewis's Edward and Alan because I thought they were ultra fabulous together and Edwards treatment of Alan in those years so best explains why AJ was treated the way he was. Now why Jason was sainted I have no clue.

I totally disagree with this. I think if they would have killed off Monica instead of Alan, there would have been just as much outrage. I love all the Qs individually but it pales in comparison to my love of the Q unit as a whole. When I've been asked who my all-time favorite characters, I list a bunch and then always state "the Q family". They were just so terrific together. But I can't say that one individual Q is an all-time favorite character of mine. If JFP was so intent on killing off a Q, she should have killed off Edward II. Alan and Monica should have remained as the tent-pole couple and then there would have been ONE couple together on Guza's GH.

  8. Paul Raven, thanks so much for those magazine covers. I've never seen them before. It's kind of fun to see that Steve, Audrey and Jessie were "cover" material once upon a time.

And that was a classic scene between Monica and Lesley. Monica was such a b#tch! LOL! LC and DA worked well together. Thanks for sharing.

  9. Yea, 1991 was horrible. The Eckerts were awful. I think if ABC gave GM some time, she could have turned things around. It boggles my mind how fast they got rid of GM when in comparison JFP continues to reign as EP at GH for over a decade with horrific ratings. unsure.png

I really enjoyed Labine's (& Riche's) GH as well even though it was very different than Monty's GH. I liked the realism and was thoroughly engrossed in all the stories. Labine and Riche also respected the history of Monty's GH which made it easier for me to like their GH. Guza, on the other hand, seemed to take delight in running a bulldozer through all of GH's history and it only made me hate his GH even more. angry.png

  10. Now this is my kind of thread. I got hooked on GH in 1977 so the 80s intro is dear to my heart.

I miss Gloria Monty. She knew how to create some dynamic and charismatic characters that you could root for. I loved her supercouples as well. While I loved DAYS back in the 80s and know they are the "supercouple" show, I actually liked GH's supercouples better.
