I will give her credit though.  She learned from that mistake and during her run no other female character was raped.  Which was better than another one falling in love with their rapist.

I think rape is an important story, especially on shows with such high female viewerships.  The stories should reflect what is going on.  But soaps have a tendency to sensationalize it and make it a plot for a couple to overcome.  DAYS I’m looking at you here.

And though I did not watch it, Santa Barbara seems to have been particularly rape crazy for a show that aired for just a decade.

Monty would never have revisited that story.  She also would not have divorced Luke and Laura.  She described her own style as a mix of Hitchcock and Capra.  So thrills but also a sense of right and wrong that was close to black and white.

Yea, I give kudos to Monty for that as well.  No female ever got raped again on her show.  I did notice that.  Monty's biggest thing was the romance.  She had that in spades with Luke & Laura, Robert & Holly, Frisco & Felicia and Duke & Anna.

She was truly robbed the year of the fire.  I will never forget Luke telling her on the docks, then going to identify Lucky, and lashing out at Luke and Sonny and Jason.  Not to mention the week after leading to his funeral.  I remember even soap stars from other networks saying how her performance was truly overlooked.

Her grief just seemed so real.

Yea, that was just a tour de force. Genie was outstanding.  In fact, I just might have to rewatch those scenes again.

The reveal of what his dad had done to his mom before he was born and how it impacted Lucky was must-see TV. "The Cowboy" had always had such a hero worship for Luke. Those scenes where Lucky confronted Luke and Laura (separately) were some of the best work of the Francis/Geary/Jackson triumvirate. The dynamic was never the same after JJ left (though he came back years later).

I totally agree.  The revisit of Laura's rape was so good.  I was so surprised when Genie didn't even get nominiated for an Emmy that year.  Then again, that was the year that Susan Lucci finally won.

Agreed.  Running Port Charles and GH was a huge mistake IMO, and GH suffered.  Guza’s storylines totally collapsed about 2 years into his return from Sunset Beach and the show was a dark mess.

When did Frons take over ABC daytime?  Because I think that his type of interference was present towards the end of her time there.  I know she and Bob were not getting along by that point either.

Brian Frons joined ABC Daytime in August of 2002.  The beginning of the end.

The funny thing is that I really enjoyed Sonny, Jason and Carly in the early 90s.  It's the fact that they have remained the sole focus of everything since.  I absolutely abhor all three characters now.  Way to run a once great show into the ground, ABC. :(

I love Monty but I also really enjoyed a lot of what happened under Hardy and Kenney.  And they were not as demanding as she was, so the cast also had reasons to not enjoy her worst traits.

When she took daytime by storm before, she had strong writers for the first few years or her tenure with Marland and Falken-Smith.  That was not the case during her return.

I still think some of her choices were right, just not the way she implemented them.  But I would not trade those Riche years.  When Labine got there, the show moved me in a way that it had never before.  It was sophisticated for the 1990’s like Monty had modernized it in the late 70’s.  Monty would not have told a story like BJ’s heart, and never would have told the story of Stone and Robin.

Yea, I'm a huge Monty ran but I loved the Riche years.  I loved how Wendy truly respected GH's past but made the show her own.  Unfortunately, succeeding EPs didn't follow her same path.  The disrespect of GH's past is it's greatest flaw IMO.

Even if it wasn't kind, it was true.  As a viewer, I was satisfied with GH as it was right before Gloria Monty's return, and though Ms. Monty did help to save the show from cancellation in the late 70s, her return as EP of GH in the 90s was pretty bad.  The ratings slid quite badly under her watch, and deservedly so.  Rumor had it at the time that she fired Finola Hughes and that was the last straw for ABC.

Yea, I'm a huge Gloria Monty fan but I was no fan of her second stint.  She lost the midas touch.  However, it's amazing how long ABC will keep  EPs that are much worse than her.  I'd take GM's 2nd stint in a heartbeat over what we've had in the last two decades.

  7. But Gloria was a smarty lady.  She knew there was no chemistry between Finola and Don.  Gloria referred to Frisco and Felicia as her "young leads".  Robert & Holly were more of the main leads.  So, when Emma left, there was a supercouple hole.  Quickly, Anna Devane became a heroine and then they cast Ian Buchanan as Duke.  The 4th GH Supercouple was born.

I think I may have put up an interview with the actress a number of years ago, although it mostly seemed to be about her issues with Y&R more than her work at GH.

She was on Y&R?  Really? Her name was Linda Sanders and I couldn't find that she had been on Y&R.  I feel like I remember she did some posing for Playboy or something like that. :o

I did not really enjoy her.  I loved Cheryl with Roberto back then, and thought Katherine was boring.  When I watch clips now I don't dislike her as much.

What I think shows though is just how popular Robert was.  I was always a much bigger fan of Anna than Robert, but there is no denying he had several pairings that worked and were very popular.  Holly and Anna were super couples, and people also loved him with Tiffany, Katherine, Cheryl, and Jackie.

Yea, I liked Cheryl & Robert better than Katherine & Robert.  For me, Katherine was a bit boring.  But because Katherine was paired with Robert, she became popular.  And I agree with DRW50, that the writing for Cheryl got worse as time went on.  :(

I floved Robert & Holly together.  They were my favorite.  But I also like Robert with Anna and with Tiff.  I didn't like Robert with Jackie or Autumn.  Those pairings were not good. And the actress that played Autumn was horrendous.  Ugh.  Glad she left.

I don't hate Wally, but Kurt's Ned was my favorite.  I forgot all about Decker Moss.  That Monty returns era was such a mess.

I hear you.  But I'd kill for the Monty returns era over today's mess.

It really wasn't any better. The best I can say was that at least Alan was still around.

I remembering crying when they killed off Alan Q because I knew TPTB were systematically killing off classic GH.  I don't think they wanted any reminders of GH's great past because their version of GH (Sonny, Carly & Jason) could never compare to GH's great history. For me, symbolically, killing off Alan Q, was killing GH.  It's never been the same since.

  12. I think GH fell apart during the latter half of 1998 to be honest, and never found its footing again (and that was WITH Riche).

I do not disagree.  Guza was fired as I recall.  Laura was sidelined.  For me, the recast Lucky and Nikolas were awful and had more chemistry with each other than any romantic pairing.  Roy should have been left in the past and Bobbie should have had a fresh love interest.  Angel and Hannah were both awful replacements for Brenda.  We spent forever fighting to get Michael and it made the Q's insufferable.  Burton fought his intended pairing with Carly in every scene they shared.  Stefan was destroyed.  The repeat death for Katherine was a waste.  I would rather forget Chloe and that sister for Alexis whose name I can't remember.  Luke and Felicia was terrible for both of them.  I could go on and on lol.

Man, I forgot how truly awful the show became then.  And it's gone downhill ever since.  Right before this was the last time I was truly invested in this show.

  13. Prometheus disc is for my money the best story GH ever did.

I'm not sure it was the best story GH ever did - but it was good.  And it was different...and confusing.  You did need to pay attention every day.  Fun times!
