  1. When this storyline began in late 1966 and spread over into 1967, the show was not producing storylines that extensively used supernatural elements.   The Laura Collins storyline excited the show's viewers, and, by the time it had concluded and the vampire storyline was introduced, more supernatural elements were allowed.

  2. Actor Terry Logan (about whom I wish I could find some recent information) also played roles on A Flame in the Wind/A Time for Us, One Life to Live and Love Is a Many Splendored Thing.   I had not known that he played Dr. Jackael, but I did know that he is credited with playing Dr. Len Whiting on Search for Tomorrow before the character was finally no longer appearing on Search for Tomorrow.

I believe that Mr. Logan was from Tangipoha Parrish, Louisiana (which was also the birthplace of soap opera writer Dorothy Purser) and was the son of the sheriff.

By the way, Anne Revere played the mother of Mr. Logan on A Flame in the Wind/A Time for Us.  (and also appeared on The Edge of Night and Ryan's Hope)

  3. On a thread here (I think the One Life to Live thread) it was said that Jeffrey Byron was PROBABLY given his role on All My Children (Dr. Jeffrey Martin #5) after he had been written off One Life to Live as Richard Abbott #4.   And that Laura Carrington, after being written off One Life to Live, had been given a role on the serial General Hospital.

Another such example is the hiring on actress Julia Barr, who had been written off Ryan's Hope as Renee Szabo, becoming the second Brooke English on One Life to Live.

And, Steve Fletcher, after being written off One Life to Live as Brad Vernon #2, had roles on All My Children, Loving and Ryan's Hope.   (maybe not in that order)

It is too bad that the network did not have roles for some of the other performers who were written off Ryan's Hope at the same time that Ms. Barr was written off.

  4. Back in the 1960s, The Edge of Night had a set in which Mike would run into others - often Winston - and would discuss the current storylines.

I cannot remember the name of this club.    Can anyone else remember the name?

I wonder when this set was last used on the show.

Did As the World Turns also have such a club where Chris Hughes would go?

  5. Donna, that actress in the opening scene with Ms. McKensie is Sasha von Schurler.  She was the late wife of Paul Avilla Mayer.

The role of Ramona the nurse was created for Ms. von Schurler to play, but she did not appear on Ryan's Hope.   I am not sure why she decided not to play the role.

She did appear, later, as Jane (Brooke's birth mother) on All My Children.

  6. Yes, although Berkley Harris may have appeared on the show before his actual marriage to Ms. McKenzie.

He then appeared on How to Survive a Marriage.

I looked him up, and I had not realized that he played Dr. Joe Werner on The Guiding Light.    Maybe it was a as a traditional temporary replacement, or maybe he played some scenes after the death of Ed Zimmerman and before Anthony Call began in the role.

I wonder how Berkley Harris would have been had he been coast as Mayor Brian Bancroft on Another World.

  7. I do know that ABC wanted another version of General Hospital.   They requested that Ryan's Hope emulate that Hollywood serial.   The first episodes of Ryan's Hope had a lot of hospital scenes, and many of the initial characters (Dr. Ed Coleridge, Dr. Nell Boulac, Dr. Seneca Boulac, Dr. Roger Coleridge, Dr. Faith Coleridge, Dr. Bucky Carter, Dr. Clem Moultrie, Jillian Coleridge, Ramona the nurse and Dr. Patrick Ryan) were workers at the hospital.

But, what ABC got (and acknowledged that they had gotten) was a family show.

The show really came together when Robert Costello was hired as the second producer.

CBS probably was not interested in a new daytime drama in 1975.    They were busy expanding already-existing show and had to chuck The Edge of Night and, eventually, Search for Tomorrow.

ABC was considering expansion of All My Children.    However, there was a lot of resitance from the cast and from Agnes Nixon.    But, the expansion eventually came about.

Please forgive the crossed out letters.    I am not sure why my computer suddenly began crossing out the letters.  (it is still legible.)

  8. NBC's First Love was also broadcast from a department store in Philadelphia.

Three of the stars were Val Dufour, Rosemary Prinz and (I think) Patricia Barry.

Other serials which were produced somewhere other than New York, Chicago or California include:

    Moment of Truth (NBC)

    High Hopes (syndicated)

    Strange Paradise (syndicated)

    The Catlins (syndicated)

    Another Life (CBN)

  9. It is rather funny that on Where the Heart Is, Pat Falken Smith was eventually replaced by Claire Labine and Paul Avila Mayer.     Then, on Ryan's Hope, Claire Labine and Paul Avila Mayer were replaced by Pat Falken Smith.

I post the word "eventually" because Labine and Mayer did not start writing Where the Heart Is as a team.   One of them (I think Paul Avila Miller) came to the show first and then Ms. Labine was hired as a writer.

They may have been a team, though, by the time that Pat Falken Smith departed from that show.

  10. Rick Edelstein and Margaret DePriest had worked together over at CBS on The Edge of Night.    She was an actress (playing Abby Cameron #1) and later a writer.

I think that he is responsable for her movement to The Doctors.    She originally played a social worker and then she became the writer for The Doctors.

She later co-created and co-wrote (with Lou Shoberg, who had been the head writer of The Edge of Night when she was a writer for that show) Where the Heart Is.   (They were later replaced by Pat Falken Smith.)

I am a retired English teacher, and I hope that third paragraph did not include too many run-on sentences!

  11. How long was it before Lois Kibbee left the role of Elizabeth Sanders on One Life to Live and her death?

I have wondered why she never became a writer on the that show.   I think that she appeared after the time that Henry Slesar had left his writing position on that show.   (They had written The Edge of Night together at one time.)

I wonder if she had become ill by the time that Elizabeth was written off the show.

  12. How I agree with your post above, soapfave06!

The excitement of the summer comes to an almost-halt as Viki is suddenly invited to her high school class reunion.

I really, really hated the third actress who played Cassie.   I also did not ever care for the character (or the actor who played) Jon Russell. although I liked the Sanders family.  i

My favorite character during this period may have been Tiny.    I wish that she and Wade had shared more time together!

And, I do not know why, but I enjoyed the character of Audrey (who will be introduced a little later).

  13. I loved the way the Todd storylines were written as well as their results.

I just did not want Todd to ever reconcile with Blair after he returned from Ireland!  It would have been better if they had moved to other people.

I liked Blair with Chad the bartended and Todd with either Rebecca or Tea!

I especially liked the scene in which Todd sees Victor before the old man's death.

  14. Even back in the 1980s, I felt that the departure of Blair Underwood was his own choice.  In the fall of 1986, his first primetime series, Downtown, premiered on CBS.

I think that the show was delighted and honored to have cast him in the role of Bobby, and that some of his final scenes were with Erica Slezak as Vikki.   They were probably hoping that he could possibly return later to the show.

Ed's return to the show was a visit.

I have seen the episodes on which the show seemed to be leading Samantha Vernon and Josh Hall to a storyline.  I, too, thought that it was strange for the times (the 1970s).

I do not remember thinking that Bobby and Lisa would be well paired, but it has been so long ago that I may have simply forgotten.

I think that the departure of the Hall family brought about the dropping of the Lisa character.    The network was probably happy with this actress's work so she was cast in the serial General Hospital.

I think that the same thing happened earlier when Jeffrey Byron was dropped as Richard Abbott #4 and then was cast on All My Children as Dr. Jeff Martin #5.  I really think that his addition to All My Children changed the storyline.

  15. I had forgotten about Stella.

You are exactly right about Dr. Josh Hall.   Guy Davis had very little to do!  And, a little more personality would have been a welcome.

I think what happened during that summer was that two original cast members (although both of them left and then returned), Ellen Holly as Carla and Lillian Hayman as Sadie, were dismissed.   The Hall family had a big storyline coming, but the storyline was moved over to the Sanders family.  The show's producer wanted as little connection to Carla and Sadie as possible, so Lisa, Josh and Ed were all dropped.   The character that John Amos played took up where Ed's character was dropped.  Fortunately, Ken Meeker as Rafe was kept for continuity!

The dropping of Lisa and Josh came about the same time that the Dr. Ivan Kipling storyline and the characters of Dan and Annie were dropped.   Cassie, Rob and Guiletta were all kept and moved from the country back to Llanview.

  16. Mr. Washam was later head writer for The Guiding Light.

He was the husband of Anne Barcroft (Ann #3) and the father of Ian Washam (Little Phillip #1).

I have never understood why he did not work on Loving.   I loved the work of head writer Ralph Ellis, but I expect that the show would have been better had Mr. Washam written it.
