There was some crazy stuff back in the day that they could never get away with now. But even now you have characters like Sonny Corinthos that are heralded as saviors of the town who called women whores and sluts and did horrible things to them, but he is considered fit for sainthood by the writers. For a genre that caters to women, the misogyny is rampant.

I feel that way watching 90s Todd knowing they’re going to turn him into a leading man after he was the ring leader of Marty’s gang rape, was revealed to have raped a woman prior to Marty, and would terrorize and try to rape multiple women after Marty. It was too much.

Doesn't matter the explanation it was still stupid and short-sighted. And that explanation makes no sense as Georgie and Maxie looked nothing alike body wise, height, and hair color. Diego would've been able to tell the two apart.

He could tell them apart. He killed Georgie because she would’ve seen him and known he was alive when she came in Maxie’s place. I agree that writers had no clue who the killer was from the start.

  3. Watching episodes of soaps from the 80s and 90s, I’m struck by how common it was to have male characters slap female characters, and these usually weren’t characters who were supposed to be villains. Like Roger on GL slapped Alex back after she slapped him, but he was a rapist so that’s not shocking, but that same show had Billy Lewis returning Reva’s slap and slapping his daughter. A character like Lucas on Days was I think supposed to be more rootable and he had to be held back by Austin from hitting Sami after she slapped him and straight up slapped his mother without any provocation from her. I was watching a 90s episode of OLTL and Jason, who seemed like a good guy, slapped Dorian back after she slapped him. I guess this did still occur occasionally in the 2000s like when Alan slapped Sonny’s girlfriend Reese, but it seemed really prominent before then.

I just think 2006 and onward as a whole started to damper my love of soaps. I feel like 2005 was the last year where anyone actually tried to give soapy drama that was centered in reality.

For me, it was really when Y&R sent Dru over that cliff, followed by Brad being killed in the ice pond, and Adam heinously gaslighting Ashley, etc.

Then on World Turns, we had Luke and Noah constantly petting each other or yearning for each other to the point they killed any momentum. Then we had Janet Ciccone and her brat, Liberty, eating up the show alongside Katie. And the stories felt more episodic than long-term.

B&B had bored me for the longest with the constant Taylor v. Brooke over Ridge. The halo being knocked off Taylor's head brought me back in for a second, but that was nuked with embryo crap with Nick, which went nowhere (we don't even get a mention of the child). And Stephanie (even though I loved to hate the character) inadvertently causing Brooke to be raped. The icing on the cake was Oliver banging Brooke and not being able to tell the difference between her or Hope.

Guiding Light was just painful to watch after Ellen Wheeler took over. Tammy/Jonathan was gross. Gus/Harley grew tiring. I didn't even care for Josh/Reva, and Cassie getting with Josh was so out of character for her.

    Other soaps:

*AMC and Dixie dying via pancakes. I just felt that was a waste of Cady McClain's talent and time.

*POC characters being tossed aside for White counterparts on OLTL. I grew tired of watching Evangeline and Antonio getting cast aside for Natalie and Nash getting the upper hand. But I guess they got the last laugh as Natalie later caught hell from Marty and Nash died, so there's that.

*Like many others, I grew tired of the show being all about Sonny/Carly/Jason/Sam. What really ended me watching GH was when they heinously murdered Georgie and made Diego the killer. They totally tossed aside the fact that Diego once had strong feelings for Georgie and would've never killed her. Per usual, Georgie always got the short end of the stick under Guza.

*With Days, it was Sami falling for her rapist (EJ). Then it propelled to Lucas being the third wheel to their pairing and being cast aside when he is a HORTON. Lucas should be driving story and be the actual lead on this show. I never understood how Days didn't see the value in Bryan Datillo.

Their explanation for Diego killing Georgie was that Maxie was his intended target and Georgie came in her place.

  5. Also I don’t think the writers should’ve  ever made Todd a leading man after how far they went with the character. He was the ring leader in Marty’s gang rape, raped a woman before Marty, and tried to rape multiple women after Marty.

Sloan passed away from cancer. Jason left town after his romantic interest Beth (River's biological mother) passed away from an awful strain of flu that swept through Llanview (Viki was struck down by it as well).

Thank you. From the comments on the episodes I’m watching, it seems like many did not enjoy Sloan being an interloper for Viki and Clint. I wish Jason could’ve returned for a visit after he left because Marty could’ve used more support.

  7. Watching 90s OLTL, and I see that Dorian always liked them younger since she was dating this Jason Webb guy. Also crazy how they used to have non villainous men slap women back because Dorian slapped Jason and he returned the favor. I did really like Jason and Marty’s friendship since we rarely get completely platonic friendships between men and women.

  8. I’m planning to do a compilation of Nora’s slaps and punches. Does anyone have examples? I know of her slaps in the 2010s and her slapping RJ in the 90s. Don’t know if she ever slapped Bo.

This is one Usenet Archive. There are others. When this guy began loading Usenet posts he started with 1981-1991 with the stated intention of continuing to add more. Soap discussion was first in Rec.Arts.TV & then a splinter group was created Rec.Arts.TV.Soaps so Usenet archives are one place to look. And that's all the search info you need.

(In 1995 there was another split into rec.arts.tv.soaps.abc, rec.arts.tv.soaps.cbs & rec.arts.tv.soaps.misc and also about then some alt.* groups were formed like alt.something.days-of-our-lives etc. but that is all older than you want. So you can ignore this.)

In 1975 a woman named Bryna Laub ran an email soap updating service. She began by herself & by 1975 she had a half dozen employees & they did *I believe* weekly summaries of all soaps then on the air. At least one year, 1977, she put out a book of them, an Annual, which of course is out of print. I have no idea if a copy is findable to purchase. I looked 3 places for archives of her summaries online but didn't find any. So the book is the only realistic lead there. Back then I think most who did them did weekly, not daily.

    Hope this helps! Happy Hunting!

    Thank you

  10. It’s a bit jarring how often men would slap women in the 80s and 90s. Roger slapped Holly and Alex back and slapped his daughter. Billy slapped Reva back and slapped his daughter.

I am unlike most GL fans because I did not dislike the end years or Peapack. Instead I thought that this might be the new way soaps looked. There were only 2 things that bothered me & they bothered me to an extreme. When EW repurposed offices to double as sets, most worked but the courtroom was an exception. The second floor was so steep to the first that it was ridiculous. It never should have been used. And the other was audio. They took way too long solving  horrible problems with audio. And if you can't hear a soap, you can just forget it.

Other things GL that I hated: Maureen's death including the fact that Lillian paid a price & Ed was just untouched; the clone; traveling through time via portrait; Holly kidnapping the children; Roger's son imprisoning Holly in an actual cell & then trying to romance her; sock puppet; Maryanne Carruthers; teens tunneling & falling down, somehow, into Danny & Michelle's apartment; Ben Reade sex storyline & suicide; Marty West & that baseball diamond; Eden the whole character; Natalia until Otalia.

Random things I loved: Laura Bell Bundy; Gina Tognoni; "Doris Wolfe" mayor in gay bar with a hat on; Aubrey Dollar; Matt Bomer; Lisa Brown & Michael Tylo; "Mattessa"; Melissa Hayden & all things Bridget; "Nadine Cooper" loved Jean; "Jenna" earlyish; all the Lewis men; Hawk & Sarah; Buzz; Emma always but especially "My 2 Moms". Otalia, the graveyard & gazebo, written by Swajeski; Jami, Tammy's death & Jonathan's reaction; Richard's funeral where Cassie read "Wild Geese" by Mary Oliver, Pullitzer winning poet; GusH, a love scene where Harley's arm was broken so Gus obliged her & it was clear it was oral sex. Many years later on DAYS oral sex happened again & many pearls were grasped, so GL was that far ahead of the game; another love scene directed by Bruce Barry with Philip & Olivia where Grant's bicep covered so much of Crystal's body it looked like they were both naked.

OLTL did an implied oral sex scene with Dorian and David, but it was played comedically.
