  1. As much as I love EF and Lisa, her complaints ring hollow. She could have left the show at any point and she was probably still getting paid a comparatively high rate per episode even though it was obvious she had a low/no monthly guarantee. I am no Goutman apologist, but EF did have two tribute episodes, in 2000 and 2010, during his tenure. Neither Kathryn Hays nor Marie Masters had tributes in that time frame.

  2. LB’s writing was contrived and FMB’s production values had a cheap plastic quality, though I somewhat marvel at the expansive and elaborate sets of the time. And that FMB music makes my ears bleed.

Unpopular opinion: I preferred Leah Laiman’s run over anything from Lorraine Broderick. I loved that CG and LL gave Kathryn Hays so much material.  I wish that KH and Eileen Fulton were active on social media. I would love to see recent pictures of the two.

  3. These are from Sally Sussman Morina

  4. That period under FMB, especially 1998-99, was so blah. And, of course, the Margo/Eddie stuff was running concurrently with Tom/Emily. I only liked the Tom/Em pairing because it wasn’t Eddie and Margo. Gross. That story partly ruined Margo for me, but I did appreciate how the show would trot out the Em/Margo rivalry in later years and particularly during that brief Casey/Em affair.

But, like I said, that period was so blah. I recently rewatched a few eps... the writing was glacial and focused on odd character groupings minus a handful of stories. The production values were lackluster, but the sets were spacious in spite of their cheap looking adornments. CG really took them up a notch if you compare early 1999 to later in the year and into 2000.. And the less said about the music direction during this period, the better. The tone was totally off in terms of music.

Have y’all heard this Kay Alden interview: https://m.soundcloud.com/casey-hutchison-450535820/kay-alden-interview

Its a damn shame the interview was handled by someone who seemed to lack knowledge of the show and basic interview skills. Particularly when they go into the most recent stint she started to get into interesting things but there would be dead air and he’d go back to his question that had no relation to what she was saying. No follow up. She mentioned how the Tessa/Mariah didn’t work out when they were writing it. My question is why? Was it network interference? Instead they follow up with what her story plans for JT’s return, something that had absolutely nothing to do with her.  Something interesting is that when asked if she or Sally would return, she wouldn’t go into details but she pretty clearly said they wouldn’t ask either to come back. Not so much they wouldn’t return, but they knew they wouldn’t be asked. It makes me so interested to hear about the type of network interference they must’ve gone through. For most soap writers that would be normal, but for Kay working under Bill Bell I can imagine how that would be jarring.

I posted the interview in the monthly Y&R thread, but this thread is probably the better place for it.

While the interviewer lacked necessary skills, this was one of the most informative I have heard from KA. She clearly gets digs in at previous regimes, especially with regard to that dumbarse Jill music box story, the killing of John Abbott, and the Sheila fiascos. KA and SSM revisited the music box to bring closure to Jill and Kay/Phillip. They also wanted to bring back John Abbott, but too much time had passed and doing a Bobby Ewing would have been too convoluted. With regard to Sheila, KA says that she’s glad that Brad Bell basically wiped the slate clean of 2007-12 Sheila, but that there were no plans in 2017 to address Sheila’s Y&R status.

It seemed to me that KA maintains a good relationship with SSM, despite reports that stated otherwise around the time of their departure. It also appeared that KA has a decent relationship with Mal Young, whose stories and other approaches she complimented. Though she does not explicitly state it, in my reading between the lines, she blames Angelica McDaniel (and likely Steve Kent) for the larger problems with the show.

I am glad that KA was able to return in 2016 as it seemed to give her peace after the BS that went down with LML. Though she doubts she would be asked back, she DID say that she could and would consult on specific stories. I do wonder if she consulted on some stories, particulary under MAB, JG, and Jelly. But the interviewer never asked. I wish there could be a followup.

I wish! I’ve been wanting to relive her time as Gloria as well but I can’t find anything beyond her first scene. She was *so* good as Gloria I hate she left. She brought such depth to the role, she was darker and despite being very humorous I loved that she wasn’t a joke like Judith Chapman’s cartoonish take. Letting Joan go was one of the biggest mistakes they ever made. She was so good with Christian LeBlanc and Greg Rikaart.

Yes! JVA was hauntingly effective in the role. Gloria’s every move and every tic were calculated and meaningful in JVA’s hands. While I love Judith Chapman, her Gloria is really a different character. I did not know how I would get used to JC’s flamboyance after JVA’s performances. I could see JC as new money, but never the trashy mama JVA portrayed. Even if JVA had stayed beyond her initial few months and survived through hack LML (assuming they made amends), I don’t think that she could have handled the even faster pace of production that Y&R would eventually fall victim to in the late 2000s/early 2010s.
