My only problem with Ladykiller was that the writers made Dean into this rock star, but he sings  for about 30 seconds of the song lol

It took me a really long time to realize that haha! He sang more of some of the other songs thankfully, but yeah his "big hit" was mostly that 80s blonde lady.

    Dean and Jenna's Ladykiller video

I didn't watch AW until the last year, but having watched tons of it on Soapnet/YouTube/tapes I loved Dean and Jenna and that horribly 80s video story. I know it was the early 90s but omg that thing screamed 80s to me. Had I been watching in 91/92 (when I was 13ish) I am sure that would have hooked me.

    Lee and Gail Baldwin

I'm torn with ones like this because it's nice to think they are just living out old age off screen in PC. Do we need funerals on screen for every older character? In a perfect world, before the actors pass away, they could have a little "Lee is retiring from the law!" party or something so they don't just disappear. But I think I'd prefer no proper exit to someone like Lee Baldwin dying and no one in town giving a [!@#$%^&*].

She is well known even to this day as despicable defense attorney/later judge Danielle Melnick on the Law & Order franchise.

She also plays Rachel's mom on Crazy Ex Girlfriend. She's had two hysterical songs so far.

She's in this one, but it's mostly Patti Lupone singing:

This one is all her and it is amazing:

Am I the only one who got annoyed that Vicki changed Kevin & Joey's name from Riley to Buchanan? just because Clint adopted them didn't mean they had to change their last name

Makes sense to me. I have a family member who was pretty much in the same situation, father of young kids died, she eventually remarried and new husband adopted the kids, they added his last name to their names. Did Kevin and Joey become Kevin Riley Buchanan and Joey Riley Buchanan, or did they dump Riley altogether?

Do you think that casting Liz Keifer ruined that chance? Would someone like Michelle Stafford, Jamie Luner or Sarah Brown fit the part better?

Oh god, kill me now. I can't stand her. lol From the clips and episodes I've watched, I think by 93 LK Blake was great. I think it was more the writing that crapped out on Blake than the actor not being able to handle it. Blake not having any career was strange. Plenty of women are stay at home moms in real life (me!), but on a soap there isn't much for a character to do if they don't have a job of some kind. So much of SS Blake was business woman and then LK's Blake was eventually mom Blake. And because it's a soap, the kids aren't around all that often so the mom either looks like a crappy one off having adventures leaving whoever to raise the kids, or the mom isn't around because she's off caring for the kids.

There was a few weeks between SS's last day and LK's first day.  But I recall LK tried to mimic SS and it didn't work.  It took a little time for LK's to make Blake her own.

Yup, I've watched all those clips on You Tube. It felt like the writers tried to keep the dialog the same, the first few episodes with LK I could totally picture/hear SS's Blake saying those things. But pretty quickly it seemed to adjust.

  8. I'm curious how the switch from Sherry Stringfield to Liz Keifer went with Blake. I started watching in the late 90s, so LK was the only Blake I knew and I liked her a lot. But having now watched a ton of SS's Blake, I LOVE her. I imagine the shift, and especially at that point in the Ross/Holly/Blake story, would have been so hard to accept.

  9. Man, watching the June 1991 part 12 episode is just breaking my heart. Maureen's infertility story is so realistic and touching (went through infertility myself, though I ended up with twins, so happy ending). I love Dr Sedgwick saying women are taught from childhood that their sole purpose is to find a husband and have a child and there's more than that to life. I can definitely relate to the sort of desperation Maureen feels, that "this may never happen" fear. Sad that she's only got 1.5 years to live and that it never did happen. I'm hoping they deal with the fact that she does have Michelle and has raised her since infancy though, a lot of the time she sounds like she doesn't even consider herself a mother when she clearly is one.

Who gives a sh-t about them? I don't. Empire makes double of what daytime soaps make and they addressed police brutality. American Crime's first season opened with a 8.0 in ratings and stayed making above 4.0 throughout the season, and they addressed race relations. Shots Fired consistently stayed making what Y&R is getting now.

In addition to not pandering to racists or backwards thinking people, relevant, timely stories like that could bring in NEW viewers.

I heard somewhere that Deas stuck around as long as he did to just provide stability within his household and to allow his wife, Margaret Colin (ex-Margo, ATWT) the chance to audition for roles in Primetime more often.

As much as I wasn't a big Buzz fan, I guess I'm glad he did that because MC has been HYSTERICAL on Veep this season.

It's interesting to me that people think Pam Long did awful work on One Life to Live when the show hit #1 when she was writing.  People didn't like the Rappaports (sp?)  but she wrote it and the show hit #1 that Summer.

For me at least, the period right before the Rappaports hit was what pulled me in, then I stuck with it out of habit/hope it'd get better.

Who would everyone say was their favorite non Roger love interest for Holly?  And who would everyone say was their favorite non Holly love interest for Roger?

I only watched GL 'live' in the late 90s and early 00s, but I've watched a bunch of 70s-90s on You Tube. I'm really liking the Daniel St John story, I think he and Holly have decent chemistry. I know where it's going, lol, but so far I like them.

I can never judge Holly and Ross honestly because I loved Ross and Blake from when I watched live and the idea of him with Holly is so strange to me.

As for Roger, once I watched the rape storyline I can't really get into a romantic storyline with him. I love the character, he's complex and wonderfully acted obviously, but the rape made the romance part a no-go for me. Plus he keeps slapping Blake in clips or episodes I watch and that drives me nuts!

If so, I get where Maureen is coming from, but I seriously never got why she was so intimidated by Holly.

There is one line in some clip I saw where Maureen is flipping out about Holly and she says something about the "skinny, beautiful Holly" being single again. I think Maureen had some body issues or insecurities.

And given what I've heard---that Marland fine-tuned every script before it went on air, I wouldn't doubt he was consumed by his career and might have ignored some warning signs. I know after my father's heart attack, we could see signs we'd missed.

What did he die of? Wiki only says complications from abdominal surgery. Was it a heart attack?

  15. Frank is so much better back then. I really LOVE his friendship with Blake. Kind of understated and not shown very often, but they always trade cute barbs and seem to care about each other. Anyone know when they sleep together in the booth at the diner? Has that already happened here?

I am also liking Bridget a lot so far. Haven't watched much of her but the way she's treating Michelle is so realistic and Michelle's little obsession with her is adorable.

Oh and every mention of Ed and Maureen trying to have a baby makes me so sad. She has so little time left (I mean a year and a half is a long time in soap land but not in life).

I sometimes get annoyed with bad quality vids. I shouldn't, but I do. But to be honest, I also get distracted by some of the big hair and loud clothing of the '80's too. LOL. If you wander in to some of the "Silas kidnaps Nola" stuff---spoiler alert, Ben Hendrickson's the bad guy. *mind blown*

Well I'm getting pretty far down that rabbit hole! I am really enjoying it, so thanks! I was laughing that Ben is the bad guy and Ellen Dolan is Maureen at this time! I knew she had been on GL but I didn't realize they were both on it at the same time. I hear you about the fashion though. I was watching some 1992 Guiding Light a while back and Blake was wearing these earrings that were so enormous it honestly distracted me from the scene.

P&G soaps always got derided for being too "old-fashion," but early 90's GL has aged a hell of a lot better than what the ABC soaps and DAYS were producing at the time.

It's so engaging! I started watching these 90/91 episodes mainly to see Sherry Stringfield's Blake, but I'm slowly branching out and watching the other characters and storylines and I'm loving almost everything! Still not into whatever is happening with Mallet and Francesca though. Is it some kind of mob storyline? I really haven't watched as they kind of bore me to death.

    was Seyfried better on ATWT?

As far as I remember, she did next to nothing on ATWT. I feel like she just stood next to Mary Beth Evans and listened. Maybe there's a storyline with her that I'm forgetting but I don't remember her being around long at all.

Brown was very well received on GL. I believe Quint and Nola's wedding was the highest rated GL episode of history.

Alright, I need to find some Nola (and Quint) stuff on You Tube I think because her Iva was jut so mopey and awful that I can't imagine how anyone likes her and I think I'm attributing it to the actress when it's probably the writing or the character. When I was little I used to play with this doll my mom had that was named Poor Pitiful Pearl and that's always what I think of when I see Iva! lol
