Yesterday (September 19) marked the 25th anniversary of the release of Rhythm Nation 1814. Although it was Janet Jackson's 4th solo album and her prior album Control is considered her breakthrough album by most music fans, I think Rhythm Nation 1814 is the album that cemented Janet Jackson as a global music icon.

So Henry Simmons and Ellen Wheeler ended up together. Was their pairing well-received?

15 years ago today (July 5) was the premiere of Passions. NBC aired Passions in the timeslot previously occupied by Another World, which had ended it`s 35 year run 10 days earlier. The break in between the end of Another World and the premiere of Passions was due to NBC`s coverage of Wimbledon.

Last Sunday (May 11) was the 25th anniversary of the series finale of Dynasty. The peak years IMO were Joan Collins's arrival to the Moldavian Massacre.

This past Thursday (March 27) was the 25th anniversary of the premiere of Generations.

NBC aired Generations at 12:30 pm ET, taking the time slot from Scrabble, which was moved to 10 am and replaced Sale of the Century. This would bring NBC's daytime lineup to four dramas (Generations, Days of our Lives, Another World, Santa Barbara) and four game shows (Scrabble, Classic Concentration, Wheel of Fortune, Win Lose or Draw).

What about roles actors declined? Some I've heard over the years:

Bill Bell offered Gregg Marx a role on Y&R shortly after Gregg left As the World Turns, but the role was turned down. I'm thinking the character was Dr. Steven Lassiter, but not 100% certain on that.

Terry Lester was offered Buzz Cooper on Guiding Light but turned that role down to take Royce Keller on As the World Turns.

Marcy Walker was offered a role on B&B in 1993 but turned that role down to take Tangie Hill on Guiding Light. I'm thinking the B&B role was a recast Kristen Forrester, but again not 100% certain.

Kimberlin Brown turned down Amanda Spaulding on Guiding Light and instead returned to B&B in the fall of 1995.

Michelle Stafford turned down the recast Annie Dutton on Guiding Light that later went to Signy Coleman.

So was Stephen Nichols CBS's first choice for Tucker then? I don't know how true this is, but I remember seeing on another board that Ron Raines was also a candidate for Tucker. Somehow I couldn't picture him as Jeanne Cooper's son.

I never knew there was a Scattergories game show.

Scattergories was hosted by the late Dick Clark. AFAIK, it was his last time as a game show host.

20 years ago today (January 15, 1993), NBC aired the final episode of Santa Barbara. The following Monday, NBC returned Scrabble to the daytime lineup and premiered Scattergories. Both game shows would end a little less than 5 months later on June 11, with Caesar's Challenge replacing Scattergories on June 14.

30 years ago (March 26, 1982) was the final CBS broadcast of Search for Tomorrow. The following Monday (March 29), Search for Tomorrow premiered on NBC at 12:30 pm ET, where it remained until the final episode on December 26, 1986.

25 years ago (March 20, 1987) CBS aired the final episode of Capitol. The following Monday, CBS premiered Bill Bell's 2nd daytime drama The Bold and the Beautiful at 1:30 pm ET and gave a new time slot to As the World Turns, 2 pm ET. Of note is that CBS would go 22 1/2 years before cancelling a daytime drama, but would end two of them a year apart.

Would you happen to have any articles about casting for Passions back in 1998-1999? I'm curious to know if Reily was going to use any big soap vets for the roles on that show.

I don`t know how true this is, but I`ve read that James Reilly wanted Melissa Reeves for Sheridan Crane.

25 years ago today (December 26, 1986), NBC aired the final episode of Search for Tomorrow. The following Monday (December 29, 1986), NBC aired a new game show, Wordplay. Also of note is that Capitol, CBS's replacement for Search for Tomorrow, would end a little less than 3 months later (March 20, 1987) to make way for Bill Bell's 2nd daytime drama The Bold and the Beautiful, and NBC would end Wordplay a little over 8 months later (September 4, 1987) and move Scrabble into the 12:30 pm ET timeslot, where it remained until the premiere of Generations in March 1989.

A couple of things to consider. When CBS cancelled Family Feud Challenge in September 1993, the 10 am ET time slot was given back to the affiliates. Not long after that, several CBS affiliates moved Guiding Light from 3 pm to 10 am. Also, in the fall of 1994, CBS lost the broadcasting rights to the NFL to Fox and several CBS stations in major markets switched to Fox (more info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fox_affiliate_switches_of_1994 ); I'm not certain how the affiliate switches affected CBS Daytime though.

Thirty years ago today (June 8, 1981), CBS moved Search for Tomorrow from 12:30 pm ET to 2:30 pm ET. CBS also moved Y&R to 12:30 pm ET, making it the lead-in to it's daytime drama block, and As the World Turns to 1:30 pm ET.

Of course they obviously didn't model their Adam on Adam Carrington...

Maria Arena Bell seems to have modeled Y&R's Adam Newman after Adam Carrington, and it looks like the rest of the Newmans over the last couple years after Dynasty circa 1982-1985, ie. Victor/Blake, Nikki/Alexis, Ashley/Krystle, Victoria/Fallon, Nicholas/Steven, Abby/Amanda, JT (whose full name is Jeffrey Todd)/Jeff, Phyllis/Sammy Jo, Sharon/Claudia.

Also Bill Bell named Sally Spectra's first husband/Macy's father on B&B Adam Alexander. As we all know, Adam Carrington's middle name was Alexander.

Maybe the Bells were fans of Dynasty back in the day.

I remember the classic primetime soaps of the 1980s: Dallas, Knots Landing, Dynasty, Falcon Crest. They all started to go downhill after 1985 though. I enjoyed some of the short-lived soaps of the 1990s/2000s as well: Models Inc, Central Park West, Pacific Palisades, Titans.

Sorry to bump up an old thread, but I'm surprised the 90210 thread has more activity than the Melrose thread.

The best years of Melrose were 1993-1995. While the show started slow (basically a twentysomething 90210), it really picked up midway through the 1st season when Heather Locklear joined the cast, and the jump the shark moment was when Kimberly blew up the building at the end of the 3rd season, which reminded me alot of Dynasty's JTS moment 10 years earlier, the Moldavian Massacre. Seasons 4 and 5 were the decline and after a good chunk of the original cast left after the 5th season, the show became unwatchable.

The best years of 90210 were 1991-1994. While the show started slow, it really picked up midway through the 1st season with the Brenda/Dylan pairing, and the jump the shark moment was when Shannen Doherty was written off after the fourth season. Instead of recasting Brenda, the writers created a replacement character in Valerie, and she was no Brenda, that's for sure. Aaron Spelling learned his lesson 10 years earlier when Emma Samms replaced Pamela Sue Martin as Fallon on Dynasty and there were alot of fans who felt that was a JTS moment for that show and he probably didn't want to make the same mistake again. Seasons 5-8 were the decline and after Jason Priestly left in the beginning of the 9th season, the original premise of the show, a midwestern family adjusting to life in Beverly Hills, was gone and thus became pointless to watch until the last episode.
