  1. That explains something- I saw a 1968 backstage photo of a party for Pamela Toll as she left for a few weeks to do a film role, and there was Jim Pritchett and other cast members and a woman next to him in a lab coat who I first thought was Bethel Leslie, but she had shoulder length hair and seemed heavier than usual. This must have been the actress who filled in for her while she was sick- who was she?

  2. Well, after seeing Liz being rejected by Nick again (when will she grow up???), I think I know what's going to happen. With her prediliction for doing without thinking- here's my fearless prediction: expect her to make a beeline to Nathan Bunker's office to spill the beans about her, Nick, and Althea. Payback's a bitch, and her name is Elizabeth Harriet Wilson!!!

  3. I just want that creep Joe Finch to be found- Lord knows how many other women he's attacked. It would be very wrong for Ms. Lakin to let him go unpunished. Still waiting for Polly's nieces to come to Madison. BTW, how much longer does Bethel Leslie have left on the show before Lydia Bruce shows up, and were there any other actresses filling the gap between the two?

  4. If I were Nick Bellini I'd go incognito ASAP 'cause the you-know-what is hitting the fan! A lot of people at the hospital will blame him for Liz' situation- breaking the engagement and such. And this is just the thing Bunker can use to try to push Matt out of Hope Memorial. I swear, so many people are in turmoil there, they should call the place Hopeless Memorial!!

  5. This Finch guy is a creep and I think he wants to blackmail Liz regarding her disappearance. Has she read the papers yet? She doesn't know her actions have caused a lot of problems! Time to grow up and face the music, Miss Wilson- provided you can get away from your pervert neighbor!

  6. Who do you think will be the one to physically attack Nathan Bunker- with a punch or a slap? Personally, I see Nick at the top of the list, followed closely by Althea, Liz, Karen, and even Nurse Carolee and Maggie!

  7. I see that "Orderly Starsky" put in another appearance! At long last Maggie calls Matt out on Karen, but he is so blind to what others see. Looks like the 'bohemian type' niece Polly talked about may be the one to catch his eye- bring on the nieces, this show needs some comic relief and romance right now!

  8. I bet that one of those nieces will end up with Dr. Rice. BTW, did you get Steve's comment re: Karen? Very interesting…….. So we now know why Bunker hates Matt, and why he's in that wheelchair. How soon do you think that old fart will find out about Althea?

  9. I was hoping he'd knock Nathan out of his wheelchair! Matt is so blind when it comes to Karen. At least Ruth Winters is doing better- maybe she didn't have that drink after all. Perhaps Danny's 'home visit' will bring him closer to Ruth and her husband.

    Okay, everyone, trivia quiz time!

Elizabeth Hubbard (Dr. Althea Davis) had a cousin who was also acting in a daytime soap while she was on The Doctors. The cousin became a major star- best known for an iconic role.

    Name the famous cousin!

  10. For once I can root for Nasty Nick: he really hit Krautlein Karen right between the eyes today! Yep, he could clearly see what she is up to!! She's really making a fool of herself, and what I know about her future story, let's say she is going to get a very rude awakening in the matters of l'amour from another Hope Memorial staffer!

  11. I still think that Dr. Winters isn't that good a shrink if he can't even help his own wife! He just let her walk out of the hospital to get drunk- what a stupid jackass! Wanna bet that John Rice falls for one of Polly's nieces? It would certainly help him get over Liz Wilson. I loved finding out today that Polly had acted in silent films- how sweet. Why didn't Carolee or Maggie tell John and Nick about Nathan Bunker badgering Liz? That really got on my nerve as these guys got on the verge of another fight. Ruth was right about one thing: Mrs. Berger did ask Matt about Ruth's past drinking problem.

  12. Some years back, someone who is connected to the TV/film industry told me that all the episodes exist in a tape/film vault in LA (probably in kinescope form). I wonder if there is any interest out there for a relatively failed soap, unlike the soap that replaced NTY on the ABC schedule: Dark Shadows!

  13. This Nathan Bunker is obviously a knock-off of the Martin Peyton character from Peyton Place. That show was Rita Lakin's previous job prior to The Doctors. I'm surprised she would steal from her old show. Dr Winters is such an idiot- he's a psychiatrist and he can't even see that his own wife is on the verge of a breakdown! I feel he won't be on staff much longer….. Carolee Campbell is amazing- no wonder she went from an extra to a leading lady within a few years!

Regarding Althea's late son: Althea and Nick were out of town having a romantic getaway when her little boy came down with meningitis and suddenly died. Apparently this was the cause for their breakup (she felt guilty about not being there for Buddy) and this was when Nick and Liz got together. That plotline reminded me of "Mildred Pierce" with Mildred having a tryst with Monte as her youngest daughter has a fatal case of pneumonia.

It was interesting to see the vintage commercials, but I was hoping to see a promo for either DAYS or AW with a clip or two.

  14. This is one reason why NBC DAYTIME would start a remarkable ratings run that lasted for the next decade. AW, TDRS, and DAYS all specialized in 'pushing the envelope' drama wise, as opposed to the more conservative CBS shows (SS being the exception as it wasn't a P&G show, and was known for daring plotlines). ABC started out with GH (and indeed it was a 'kinder, gentler' medical soap - and it actually had live organ music!) but soon made a name for itself with the category-by-itself DS, which grabbed the teen audience.

By 1978, the ABC shows (OLTL and AMC now added to the lineup) were the new trendsetters, and behind-the-scene changes at all the NBC shows (key actors leaving, changes in writers and producers) led to the ratings downfall of those once-influential pioneers.

  15. My heart breaks for John Rice- such a nice guy, and yet he gets treated badly by, Nick, Karen, and even Liz and Steve! I must congratulate Dr. Matt for being there for Althea and keeping Nick out of her affairs.

  16. AllMyShadows, actually all of Days of our Lives as well as Y&R are preserved on tape since those shows are partly owned by Columbia/Sony. Ryan's Hope is owned by ABC and is complete. Like DS and TDRS, these are the ONLY daytime soaps which were regularly archived prior to 1978.

  17. It looks like Karen is trying to get her hooks into Matt, and Althea's pregnancy may be in trouble- a very restless night. I was shocked at how the shrink read his wife the riot act over her seeing Althea. I think they'll wind up adopting Danny instead of an infant. The Liz/Carolee dynamic is excellent- we can see that slowly and surely Carolee is becoming more and more important on the show.

  18. I felt that NBC and P&G should have considered an option that would've been perfect for all involved re Reinholt/Courtney. Why did they simply offer them a big-bucks deal to move over to Somerset? P&G could have had Steve and Alice decide to make a new start in Somerset. That way, the ratings-charged spinoff would now have daytime's top duo as their new stars, drawing new viewers. Somerset would have been given a new lease on life. As we all know, ABC wound up being the beneficiary of the AW firings- Reinholt & Courtney landed at OLTL, which began to rise in the ratings, and with the 1978 renovation of GH, AW began to lose steam.

  19. Great episodes! One really wants to slap Nick as Liz did for being such a louse, and to stick a pin in Karen to see if she feels ANYTHING- she's as cold as ice! Poor John- he needs a hug. Perhaps Liz can do it after a while. It's interesting to listen to Robert Cobert's music- very similar to his score for "Dark Shadows". I can't wait to see the '68 storylines- a major wedding, Hope Memorial gets its first black doctor, and Steve gets close to Carolee and someone else……. Also, we'll get to see Peter Burnell make his debut as Mike Powers- the longest and most remembered actor in the part. That role was like Tom Hughes on ATWT- blink and it's another recast! I remember when Mike married Sara Dancy in 1979, John Shearin played the role. A year later, it was James Storm, and the Stephen Burleigh, who I think was the last actor in the role.

BTW, that's a wig Laryssa Lauret is wearing as Karen- in real life she was a Polish blonde. I guess the producers decided there were too many blondes on the show (Maggie, Althea) at the time.
