  1. Victoria Rowell (ex-Drucilla, Y&R) is rumored to have expressed an interest in playing Dr. Valerie Grant on DOOL before they cast Vanessa Williams from Melrose Place for the part.

Before Sam Behrens and Lesley-Anne Down was cast as Gregory and Olivia Richards on Sunset Beach, Perry King and Emma Samms were rumored to be in consideration for those parts.

George Reinholt (ex-Steve, AW; ex-Tony, OLTL) was rumored to have been considered to play iconic soap roles. Those alleged roles include Frank Ryan (after Reinholt's AW firing), Alan Quartermaine, Roman Brady, Grandpa Shawn Brady (during the nineties when Frank Parker was off the show and before Frank McLean briefly played the role), and Stefano DiMera (during the nineties before Joe Mascolo returned).

  2. As you know, the Bauers, as in most soap characters in the past, have been rapidly aged before their time. Mike was too old to be the son of Bill and Bert, but Bill's sister, Meta, married a much older man, Dr. Bruce Banning, who was old enough to have a son Mike Bauer's age. Getting back to AW, John was in a car accident that left him temporarily paralyzed. Since he couldn't perform at his usual level as a lawyer and a husband, Mike Bauer was brought in to help with John's caseload and to get involved with both Pat and Lee. I just threw the pregnancy and paternity as a what if to preserve the soap's longevity.

  3. Here's an idea how the Mike Bauer (now Banning, Meta's stepson) could have been used on AW during the sixties.

Mike Banning and his young daughter, Hope, come to Bay City following the death of Mike's wife, Julie (Hope's mother). Mike comes to work for John Randolph at his law firm and meets his young wife, Pat Matthews Randolph, and adult daughter from a previous marriage, Lee. Mike gets involved with both women. Pat and Lee both become pregnant. Pat would give birth to a girl, Marianne, who would be passed off as John's. Mike, unaware that he has fathered Pat's baby, is focused on doing the right thing and marrying the pregnant Lee to give their son, Michael (named after Mike of course), a name.

John recovers and welcomes what he thinks is his daughter, Marianne, while Mike and Lee leave town with Hope and young Michael. Lee dies off-screen before Mike and Hope return to Springfield. Michael attends military school.

In the early eighties, Marianne, who is a Banning, and learns the truth of her biology following the death of John and becomes a rebellious adolescent. She rebels against her family by sleeping with Rachel's son, Jamie, who would be SORAS to 14 around the same time. It is done to preserve the character of Rachel who would be in her early-to-mid thirties by then.

Michael Banning returns to Bay City in the early eighties as an All-American teenager who joins the Bay City teen set with Jamie and Marianne. Michael's secret is that he is gay and falls in love with Jamie, who is unaware of MIchael's intentions since he is involved with Marianne.

The 1970s Michael Randolph (Lionel Johnston) stories could go to Dennis Carrington Wheeler, who would work for his grandfather, Mac Cory as a lawyer fresh out of law school.

  5. To all GL thread forum readers,

Here are some of the ideas that could have prolonged GL's 2009 cancellation.

Joey Roberts, Meta's stepson, could have come back to Springfield years later as a doctor and play Dr. Joe Werner's storylines to give Meta plenty to do during the seventies.

Meta could have been a mother figure to Joe's son, T.J. in addition to Sara.

Bruce Banning, Meta's husband, could have been a longtime Bauer family physician and family friend who had  married Meta and provided her with two stepsons, Mike, and Bill, from his first marriage to his deceased wife, Dr. Mary Leland, and they could have played Mike and Ed's stories respectively, so Bert wouldn't age so drastically.

As you already knew, Dr. Mary Leland Banning took care of Mama Bauer when she was dying during GL's early years on radio. I wouldn't put it past her to make Meta the godmother of Mary and Bruce's two sons.

Mike Banning could play Mike Bauer's stories, and Bill Banning (named after Bill Bauer who Bruce and his first wife, Dr. Mary Leland Banning, named as the godfather of young Billy) could have played Ed Bauer's stories.

Dr. Steve Jackson could be a father figure to young Dr. Bill Banning after Bruce's death making Meta a widow once again. Steve and Meta could be paired off. The backstory Steve could have had was that he and Bruce both came up in the medical profession together starting when they were medical students. Steve could have built a medical career in Europe to explain Stefan Schnabel's accent and return to Springfield as Cedars' Chief of Surgery.

Jed Allan could have been a Mike Banning recast if Don Stewart was no longer available. He could have given Marj Dusay's character, Alexandra Spaulding, so much material to work with, and they could have lasted all the way to the end.

Meta could have stayed on being a grandmother to Mike and Bill's children, Hope Banning Spaulding,  Alan-Michael Spaulding, Dr. Rick Banning (Papa Bauer whose first name was Friedrich could have been the namesake as well as the godfather), and Michelle Banning.

Ben and Maggie Scott . Maggie could have been a niece of Bruce, and daughter Peggy could have turned to Meta  or/ even Bert for motherly support after the death of her parents.

Mary Stuart could have still taken over the role of Meta from Ellen Demming

    .

Instead of relying on the Bauers and aging them, a similar family, the Roberts/Banning family could have been introduced and used for many, many years down the line.

As for the Bauers, you know who I would have them playing the roles of Bert and Bill's sons, Mike and Ed:  Justin and Ross!

    The Marlers wouldn't exist.

Ross  (instead of Mike) Bauer could have played Ross Marler's stories starting in 1979, and Dr. Justin (instead of William/Edward) Bauer could have played Justin Marler's stories starting in 1976. That way the actors portraying them could be young enough to be Bert and Bill Bauer's sons.  Bill would still have children out of wedlock, but his illegitimate children, Lainie Kincaid, could have played Hillary Bauer's stories, and Paul Kincaid, could have returned much later to play Ben Warren's stories to give Ross and the Bauers so much to do.

Phillip Spaulding would have had an opportunity to be a Bauer, and so would his descendants. Justin's daughter  and Phillip's sister, who would be Samantha, could leave town with Justin following the death of Phillip and Samantha's mother, Jackie, in 1983, and return in the mid-1990s to play Michelle Bauer's stories.

When Phillip and his family return to Springfield in the mid-1990s, he could have been a guardian to his younger sister, Samantha, who would have been playing Michelle Bauer's storylines.

Michelle (changed to Michelle Banning) would come later during the 2000s as a rebellious teenager who would come and stay with Meta and Rick.  Fletcher could have lasted a little bit longer when Michelle's biological mother, Dr. Claire Ramsey Reade, returned with Fletcher as her new husband and Meg as her stepdaughter. Meg being much closer to Claire could have cause friction with Meg's mother, Holly, and give Maureen Garrett so much to work with. Michelle and Holly could still have the special mother-daughter relationship they have always enjoyed. Fletcher possibly being Michelle's father could have been explored as well.

A bullying storyline could have been introduced with Meg being harassed at school due to her having Down's Syndrome, and Michelle sticking up for her and being her protector.

That way the Bannings and the Bauers could have had longevity along with Guiding Light.

I'm interested to know what'd you think? I'm looking forward to reading your comments.

  6. Paul Rauch wrote Felicia Gallant originally for Jane Elliot.

As for Stephanie Forrester, Constance Towers would have been better suited for the role.

As for Eric Forrester, Mitchell Ryan would have been better suited for the role. John McCook was too young. McCook should have been Ridge Forrester. Ronn Moss as Thorne. McCook and Moss seemed to be brothers anyway.

  7. Originally, it was rumored that when B&B first went into production back in 1987, Mitchell Ryan (ex-Burke Devlin, DARK SHADOWS; ex-Alex Hunter, AMC; ex-Frank Ryan, GH) was considered for Eric, Constance Towers (Helena, GH; ex-Julianna, SB; ex-Clarissa, CAPITOL) (fresh from her Clarissa McCandless gig on CAPITOL) was considered for Stephanie, John McCook (his then-dark Black hair made him young enough to be in contention for Ridge, but not old enough to play the silver haired patriarch Eric Forrester) (Eric, B&B) was considered for Ridge, and Ronn Moss (ex-Ridge, B&B) was considered for Thorne.

Dan McVicar (Clarke, B&B) tested for Ridge, and Susan Flannery (ex-Stephanie, B&B) beat out other contenders like Susan Seaforth Hayes, Jane Elliott, and Jamie Lyn Bauer for the role of Stephanie.

  8. Interesting you should mention Genie Francis. In 1982, when Genie departed GH for the first time, the show was said to consider recasting the role of Laura Spencer with actresses like Sharon Stone (very pre-Basic Instinct) and Catherine Hickland. Rumor has it, Sharon auditioned for the Heather Webber role on the same show back in the late seventies, but Robin Mattson got the job.

Oh, Francis was rumored to be in contention for both the Eden and Kelly roles when Santa Barbara first went on the air in 1984.

  9. When PASSIONS first premiered in 1999, Ben Masters had dark brown hair and went gray over time. I could see why people finding Masters being considered for other characters strange.

Even though James Hyde made Sam Bennett his own, he was too young IMHO, in hindsight.

James Hyde was playing a character who was supposed to be at least a decade older. His younger brother, Hank, was supposed to be young enough to be his son.

With Hyde playing Sam, Sam, Hank, and Ethan looked like they were closer in age.

Honestly, could you buy him being a father (Ethan, Noah, Kay, Jessica, and Jack) and grandfather (Little Ethan, Jane, Jonathan, Maria, and Little Spike) with him looking like he's in his late twenties/early thirties.

  10. James Hyde (ex-Sam, PASSIONS) was supposed to play Hank Bennett on PASSIONS but was cast as Sam at the eleventh hour.

Ben Masters (ex-Julian, PASSIONS) was considered for Sam Bennett before being cast as Julian Crane.

Dennis Parlato (ex-Clay, LOVING) was rumored to be considered for Alistair and Julian.

In addition to Parlato, allegedly, David Hedison (ex-Spencer, AW), Donald May (ex-Adam, The Edge of NIght), Quinn Redeker (ex-Alex, DAYS), Roy Thinnes (ex-Sloan, OLTL), John Forsythe (ex-Blake, DYNASTY), John Reilly (ex-Sean, GH), Charles Keating (ex-Carl, AW), and Nicolas Coster (ex-Eduardo, ATWT) were among the many actors considered for Alistair before the late David Bailey took on the role.

LIza Huber read for Sheridan, and MacKenzie Westmore read for Gwen.

Philip Brown (ex-Buck, LOVING) was rumored to be considered for both Sam Bennett and Martin Fitzgerald.

Eric Martsolf (Brady, DAYS) originally auditioned for Ethan when PASSIONS first went on the air.

Katherine Helmond was rumored to be considered for Rachel Barrett.

  11. What types of industries wouly you had Greg Sumner's business conglomerate, Sumner Group, be involved in?

What assets, businesses, and properties would you had the Sumner Group own and operate globally?

It was never clear what exactly the Sumner group did.

  12. For all of you Lucinda Walsh fans and long time ATWT viewers, I have a few questions pertaining Lucinda Walsh's multinational conglomerate, WorldWide Industries:

If ATWT was still on today and any of you were on a writing team, then what types of industries would you have Lucinda Walsh's company, WorldWide Industries, be involved in?

Also, what types of assets, businesses, and properties would you have WorldWide Industries own and operate globally, if ATWT was still on the air, and you were on the writing team?
